#1 of In The Company of Shadows

My first attempt at a scary story. So enjoy.

Destiny stood by the front door and flicked her cigarette away. It was cold outside tonight and the cigarette did nothing to keep the small vixen from shivering. After stepping into the house, tossed her jacket onto the gray couch and settled in. Marissa had come earlier and stayed to keep Destiny company, being out in the middle of nowhere, the vixen could use the company since her brother, Aj, was at the pow wow. Marissa came into the living room and sat across from Destiny. She could smell the stench of cigarette smoke on Destiny's jacket and after awhile, grew accustomed to it. "So......you see any cute guys at the pow wow?" asked Marissa. Truthfully, she knew Destiny had and wanted to see if Destiny seen anyone she had. Destiny broke her attention away from the TV, "I seen a few wolves that looked good. There was a coyote there, he was fine. Of course there were a few others and..." "Did you see that raccoon working at that stand selling Indian tacos?" asked Marissa. Destiny looked at Marissa, she was waiting for an answer, one that surely would start an argument between fine and good looking guys. Marissa was one of those who was into looks and Destiny was more into guys who had jobs. But still, that wouldn't stop Destiny from replying, much to her dismay. "Yeah, I know the one your talking about." spoke Destiny. Marissa leaned forward, "I was thinking about snagging on him. You know, to see if its true, what they say about raccoons." Destiny looked at her like she was from another planet. Why did she have to be so up front about everything? thought Destiny. She chalks it up to Marissa being Marissa and continued on, "Why, what do they say?" "Well you know, that their good in the sack and besides, maybe I can score some free eats. Per caps come in next week and I'm running low on funds." replied Marissa. True, per caps are due in next week and Marissa, obviously needed some cash but by snaggin' on a raccoon, desperate times call for desperate measures thought Destiny. "So...... how'd you score the gas to come all the way up here then?" asked Destiny. "Oh...I had my mom loan me some money till I get my per cap. What about you? You have some cash to spend at the pow wow?" asked Marissa. "If I did, I would be there, eating a taco right now and enjoying a sno cone." Destiny had a thing for sno cones but a taco with commodity cheese; now that's the life. "Let me guess a grape sno cone?" came Marissa's sarcastic reply. "Hell yeah, a grape sno cone. Especially if the stand that sells them sells Indian tacos too." And right now, a taco sounded good, especially to Destiny, who had now began to have taco withdrawals after talking about them. "Well, if we leave now, we can still make it before grand entry." spoke Marissa as she checked the clock on the wall. It was a little after 9 and the pow wow had only begun an hour earlier. "Since you have the gas, can we use your ride?" asked Destiny. Her own vehicle only had enough to get to the gas station up the road but that was during the day. And with the weekend coming up, would have to suffer until Monday. "I guess so, but your driving, deal?" "I 'spose." replied Destiny. Destiny got off the couch and went to her room in the back of the house. The last door on the right was her room and upon entry turned on the light. She seen her reflection on the mirror atop her dresser and opened her closet. Inside were many t-shirts and a few dress shirts. "You still have that one cologne, you know the one that smells of vanilla?" came Marissa's voice from down the hall. "Check by the TV, I think I left it there. If not, then check the kitchen table. I tend to rush to work so if you can't find it then I can't help you. You just have to go commando without it." yelled Destiny. "Oh I'm going commando alright. If I see Stone there and Tiffani's not with him, I'm totally gonna mack on him." replied Marissa. Destiny stopped her searching and peered out from behind the closet door, "Isn't he bonded? And what about the raccoon?" In the living room Marissa finds the spray bottle and sprays some on herself, "Yeah well he is when she's around and as for the raccoon, he might be my fall back guy." Destiny couldn't believe what she heard but then again, she might just have a point. "You find it?" she asked. "Yeah, I found it, it was beside....hey, who's coming down the road?" Destiny perked her ears up, she didn't hear anything and walks down the hall to the front door. She sees a truck pull into the drive and waits to see who gets off. "Could be Spud from up the road, I don't know, you know anyone who drives a white dodge?' "If it is Spud, tell him that night was a mistake and that I'm not here, okay?" replied Marissa as she walked to Destiny's room in the back. "You know he can see your car parked outside, don't you? God girl, you are dumb sometimes." Destiny opened the door and stepped out onto the doorstep, "Can I help you?" A wolf in a black uniform gets off the truck and walks over to Destiny, stopping just before the front step. "Are you Destiny Tsofox?" came his voice. Destiny reached in and flipped on the porch light, "Yes, can I ask what's this about?" The wolf squinted his eyes and lets them adjust to the light before speaking again, "I'm Officer Rhines of the Fremont County Highway Patrol and came here to ask if you've seen or heard anything odd going on around here tonight?" Destiny tilted her head, "Odd?". The officer looked around, then looked back at Destiny and spoke once more, "We've been getting calls about sightings of lights out in the nearby fields and frankly, hope its just someone being dumb with a flashlight." "Well me and my friend have been here most of the day and haven't seen or heard anything." "Well if you do see or hear something, give us a call. Okay?" The officer turning to his truck, gets back on and drives off. Marissa comes walking down the hall and stands beside Destiny, "What was that about?" "I don't know. He said something about lights in the fields and that it may just be some joker." spoke Destiny as she closed the door. "So what now? You still going to the pow wow?" Destiny turned and faced Marissa, "Really? Are you that desperate for companionship?.", she replied. Marissa patted her on the shoulder, "I'll remember that when you're in heat. Besides, its probably just some asshole, drunk most likely. Don't worry about it." Destiny didn't know whether to believe her or not, Marissa was a wolf and larger and stronger than she was. If it was some drunk, Marissa could probably kick his ass. Seeing as how Marissa sometimes fought with other girls over guys. "I 'spose your right. It's probably nothing."

A half hour passed and Marissa was pacing in the living room, waiting for Destiny to get done changing. "You done yet?" she spoke, coming to a stop just before the hallway. "Unlike you, I need to look presentable." came Destiny's voice from behind the closed door. "You make it seem like I'm trading you off for a blanket or something when we get there. Hell, I'll be lucky if I can trade you in for some food." replied Marissa. Her patience coming near its end. "I'll remember that when I see Spud. I'll tell him you still have feelings for him and that you want to have his cubs." joked Destiny. "Don't remind me. I was drunk okay, if I had my head on straight, would've been with Stone that night." Marissa knew she was going to play that card and decided to play one herself. "On that note, should I tell Stone about that threesome you and me wanted to have with him?" Destiny opened her door and stepped out into the hall. She was dressed in her casual getup, Wrangler jeans, a printed tee with the words "Control Freak" across the chest and wore her black boots. Her attire signaling to those who seen her, 'Watch Out, the bitch is out'. "I never said that, least of all to you." "So you admit you want to have one?", said Marissa while trying not to smile. "If I did say that, then I was drunk and besides, you'd be passed out if we did.", came Destiny's sarcastic remark. "For a closet lesbian, you sure know about guys a lot." replied Marissa. Destiny walked past Marissa and grabbed her jacket from the couch, "I'm taking love advice from a wolf who can't keep her paws off any cute guy she sees?" "I'm a woman of tastes you know.", spoke Marissa as she walked out the front door. Destiny follows her out and locks the door behind her, "So how did Spud taste?" Marissa opens the door to her ride, an old Chevy Nova and gets in. Seeing as how Marissa had nothing to say, Destiny figured she won the war and gets into the driver's side. Taking a moment, she adjusts the steering wheel and mirrors to her liking. "And for the record, he tasted of Marlboro's and Budweiser." joked Marissa. Destiny laughs and starts the car, "Every one has their own flavor." Marissa shakes her head , "I know where this is going and it leaves me to wonder, are you still a virgin?" Shifting the car into drive, Destiny pulls out onto the lane, "I never kiss and tell." "That's what she said. I bet after a couple of beers, you'd tell me. I know I would" "No amount of beer will ever cause me to tell you" uttered Destiny. Reaching over, turns up the radio. Hopefully Marissa would entertain herself by singing, or sleeping for the rest of the trip. It would be a forty minute trip across the plains and since it was dark time, Destiny would need to pay extra attention to the road.

The trip was doing good so far, just another 15 minutes and they could see the agency lights. A light from a field off to the left of the road caused Destiny to pull the car to the side of the road. Destiny parks the car and begins to tap a sleeping Marissa on the shoulder. "Marissa, you got to see this." Hazily, Marissa brushed off Destiny's tapping and turns her head to the window. "Marissa, check it out." came Destiny's voice once more. Marissa shook her head and squints her eyes in the direction Destiny is pointing, "What is it?" "I don't know. It's just a bright light out in one of the fields. Wait..."

The light in the field suddenly goes out and causes the car to shut off prematurely. Destiny tries restarting the car but it doesn't want to turn over. She checks her cell phone in her jacket pocket and sees that its not working either. "Um Marissa, your phone working?" asks Destiny. Marissa checked her pants pocket on her left side and feels nothing, then she checked the other side. "I think I left it at your house. Why? Do we need a jump start? What about yours?" "Mine's not working." replied Destiny. Marissa checks the glove compartment for her spare and can't find it among the junk inside. "What's that noise?" asked Marissa. Destiny shifted her ears forward and hears it too. It sounded like someone was whistling out in the field but this whistle was unlike any she heard before. It would've been okay if it sounded normal but it was growing louder and louder as it began to come closer to the vehicle. As it grew louder, Destiny began to get creeped out and rolls the window up. Locking the door, she looks to Marissa, her face void of expression. "It's coming closer.", spoke Destiny over her fear, the fur on the back of her neck standing on end. She was afraid and for good reason. The whistle was coming from behind the car. "It's probably just some jackasses trying to scare us. Wait here, I'm going to have a word with them." Marissa opened her door and got off, leaving Destiny alone inside the car. "Whoever's out here, I'm gonna kick your ass when I find you!" came Marissa's voice. The whistle grew lower and then it went quiet. Marissa looked in the direction she last heard it and seen nothing. Destiny mustered her courage and peers over the seat. Marissa was walking behind the car, cursing every now and then at whatever had made the whistling noise. Her fists, clenched and at the ready for a fight. "What...the...fuck..." Destiny watched Marissa tear for the car door and get in, locking it behind her. "Fuck! Shit!" she said while fumbling under her seat for anything she could find. "What is it?", asked Destiny, she hadn't seen it but whatever it was, scared the shit out of Marissa. "Find something, anything. It's..." The top of the car came crashing down and the whistling sounded started back up. It was louder than before and caused the two girls to cover their ears in response. Destiny closed her eyes and dared not to open them through the whole ordeal. She'd rather not see what it was. Marissa screamed when something bumped against the outside of her door. The force from the hit, rocked the car. The only thing Marissa could do was hold Destiny's shaking frame. Better to be with someone than to be alone, especially right now. Suddenly it hit again, this time on Destiny's door. The shaking vixen had just about hit her limit and screams as loud as she could. It was so sudden, so scary, she only reacted the best way she could. The entire car shakes terribly as if someone was jumping around on the top of it. It causes the two girls to get jolted around when the shaking suddenly comes to an end, the whistling noise with it. Marissa slowly releases Destiny and peeks over the dash. The loud whistle had stopped and so had the shaking and Marissa wanted to see if it was over. "Is it gone?" came the frightened vixens voice. "I think so, keep your head down, just in case." replied Marissa in a soft whisper. She was trying to be cool headed and quiet. She looks around the front of the vehicle, her eyes finding no movement. Shifting her ears forward, she listened for the faintest sound of that whistle. She hears none. Destiny raised her head from her hands and looks to see what Marissa is doing. The radio springing to life scared the girls once more and Destiny screamed in response. Marissa pats her on the shoulder, "It's only the radio. Calm down. You good to drive?" Destiny didn't know if she could drive, she was still shaking, her nerves shot to hell. "I think you should, I can't." Marissa nods in response and trades places with Destiny. To the girls amazement, the car started without a problem. Destiny barely had time to apply her seatbelt when Marissa shot out of their spot like a bat out of hell. Their destination, anywhere with people and lights.

They made the last 15 miles in record time and once they seen the lights from the agency, Marissa slowed down. As they entered the lit stretch of road by the police station, Destiny felt safe enough to start talking. "What do you think that was?" asked Destiny. "The fuck if I know. Shit was crazy tho." replied the she wolf as she slowed the vehicle at a three way. Destiny was just happy to be near people and working lights again and waited a moment before replying. Whatever it was, terrified her almost to the point of no return and it took her some time to recover. "Me either, but fuck...that was some scary shit." Marissa parked her car next to the gas station and hopped out to assess the damage. The top of her car had been caved in by some thing and the door frames on the outside looked like they were kicked in. A few scratch marks were amongst the damage to the doors. Almost as if it was trying to get inside. Thank god it didn't. "Fucking thing was trying to get in. You believe that shit!?" roared Marissa. "I'd say you were drunk and did it yourself, if, I wasn't there to witness it. But what I want to know is, what did you see?" asked Destiny. Truthfully, Marissa didn't know how to answer the question. One minute she was ready to kick some ass then, she seen it. Coming towards her and coming fast. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you." she replied, "I don't even believe it myself."
