Kail stood by, the look on his face saying that he didn't want to be there. His friends kept pounding away at the kid. Yoru, his hand firmly grasping Luke's upper arm, holding him in place and wrapping his power of imperceptibility around both of them. "Stop this!" Luke screamed at Yoru. "I know you could stop this. Why aren't you?" "I'm death incarnate, Luke. My power is to take life or to leave it. I'm not allowed to do more." "That kid is going to die! You're going to let him die!" "He already could have died. If I want to end this, I can take him right now." "Is there no other way?" Luke was facing Yoru now, tears streaming down his face. "What has to happen? What do you need me to do?" "There's nothing we can do. I just needed you to see this or you'd never forgive me. The only other way." He pointed at the group. Kail shouted, "Stop! Leave him alone. You're gonna kill'im" He roughly grabbed one of his friends, the one holding the kid by the collar, and pulled him away. The kid fell forward, collapsing on the ground in front of them. His breath came in ragged gasps. Another friend stepped in front of him, as the group suddenly reoriented around Kail. Kail stuttered about not wanting to be involved in a murder. Luke had never heard him stutter before, had always assumed he was perfectly calm. The friends weren't buying it. They turned back to the kid. But the kid wasn't helpless any more. In the moment of peace he had produced a knife. Maybe it came from his own possessions, maybe he found it on a friend's ankle or belt. He was on his knees, and lunged forward, swinging the knife in an arc overhead. A few friends got out of the way, and the kid landed on Kail, the blade sunk in just below his collar bone. Luke felt the scream before he could hear it, a tearing sensation as his vocal cords tried to express his anguish. His knees gave out. Now he was hanging from Yoru's grasp, his vision blurred as he reached out to his lover. Kail slumped against the wall, lifeblood pumping out into his shirt. The world slipped away, the friends fled, the kid slumped on the ground, crying. None of it mattered to Luke, who watched sobbing as Yoru stepped forward, and reached his hand toward Kail. Luke hoped for a moment that he would heal the wound. Pull the knife free and magically heal the damaged arteries. But instead he reached into Kail's chest directly, and pulled Kail out of his own body. From where he huddled at Yoru's leg, crying, Luke looked at Kail, dangling by his shirt at the end of Yoru's grasp. Kail looked stunned and translucent, but otherwise unharmed. His body, of course, still lay lifeless against the wall, the knife embedded in the chest. Yoru pulled both of them close to his chest and spread his strange, inky wings and they floated gently into the sky.
