The 3rd Chapter in No World For Tomorrow

While the battle raged on in Neon City, a small outpost on the edge of Neon City, remained virtually untouched by alien hands.

In a small observatory tent, research was about to commence on one of the aliens. Killed by a wolf, by accident, was the perfect specimen to work on.

Roxy, a vixen with the knack for science, was the perfect candidate, to work with the alien corpse. Her discoveries here, would hopefully turn the tide of the war in favor of foxen victory over the rising threat in Neon City.

"My god does this thing stink" spoke Roxy as she neared the corpse on the table.

She was used to the smell from the chemicals in the lab where she worked but nothing could prepare her for this new smell. It was like snorting coffee, since it woke her sense of smell in a hurry. Truth is, if she breathed any harder, could possibly taste it as well.

After donning her surgical mask, began to proceed with the autopsy.

She grabbed a scalpel from the silver tray beside the exam table and began her work. The blade cut into the alien tissue like a hot knife would in butter. Upon opening the stomach area, Roxy smelled another stink that would test her resolve.

It was worse than before and causes her to fan the air in front of her with her paw. Stepping back she swallows hard, that salty taste in her mouth and tries to shake it off. It was hard to say the least.

A few moments later, after the smell dissipated into the surrounding air, Roxy stepped back to her work.

She shifted around what looked like to be clear jello and failed to see any kind of organ structure. Roxy took this newfound discovery with some salt and stopper for just a moment to speak.

"Upon examination of the stomach area, or what I had hoped to be the stomach area, yielded no sign of any viable organs. It also my belief that the jelly inside, is responsible for the smell that tainted my sense of smell for the brief moments I smelled it."

Moving upwards, Roxy began to examine the head and neck areas. Two black eyes reflected the light like hematite would.

"No visible voice box, leaves me wondering if they use some kind of telepathy or ESP. Either way, they don't use words like we do." spoke the vixen.

Roxy runs her hands over the head and feels what could possibly be some kind of bone structure. Taking the scalpel once more, she cuts away the surrounding tissues and stands amazed at what she sees.

The bones or bone like tissues, have been augmented here and there with some kind of unknown metal.

"Interesting" she said, "Bones appear to be supplemented here and there. Its almost as if this thing was manufactured. Possible that its a drone. Would explain the absence of vital organs."

Roxy reaches for the bone saw and hopes for the best. For all she knows this thing is wired to explode at any given moment.

"Let's open 'er up and have us a look see." she spoke as she brought the bone saw to life.

Slowly she places it over the skull and begins cutting into the skull. To her surprise the metal cut like bone. While she worked, imagined it like cutting down a tree, except instead of saw dust, it was bone dust on the floor.

Setting the bone saw back on the tray, turned her attention to the skull. She fumbles with it for a few seconds and finally gets a good grip on it. A small pop is heard and signaled the skull had detached from whatever tissue was beneath it.

"Seals broken, now let's see what we are working with."

Roxy had only seen things like this in those science fiction movies. The furries at work always talked about them and Roxy heard all their theories about how we're not alone in the universe. Well, here's the proof, lying on an observation table. Roxy knew how jealous they would be of her now. She didn't know whether to be excited or serious.

Placing the top of the skull next to the main body, Roxy prepares herself for what surely is to be an amazing discovery. Her face drops once she peers inside.

It's a jumbled mess of what looks like to be optic cables, surrounding a small blue orb of pure energy. It was an amazing moment yes, but was done rather sloppily. It truly was a drone, but one of an advanced race.

Roxy had never seen anything like this. It was so intricate, yet sloppy and very futuristic. The small blue marble powered the body and mind of the drone and yet, still was going after the drone was dead. If only fox kind could salvage and backward engineer this power source. The possibilities were limitless.

"Drone appears to be powered by this little marble inside the cranial cavity." spoke Roxy as she turned away from the drone.

"What else have you discovered?" came a voice over the speakers.

Roxy turns her attention back to the brain and begins to examine it some more, "Well, I figured since the others are armored, you could just shoot them in the head and pray for the best. I mean, I'm not a soldier but that's what I'd do."

"Yes, but will it put 'em down for good?" asked the voice.

Before Roxy could answer, accidentally bumped her finger against the orb and causes a power outage.

When the light is restored, Roxy is seen laying on the floor, unconscious but alive.

"Find out what happened in there" commanded the voice.

Roxy opens her eyes and finds them a bit on the heavy side, still she manages to open them. "What the hell was that?" she asked herself.

Rubbing the back of her neck, seen that she wasn't in the medical tent. Instead she was on an open plain. A group of soldiers run passed her and she looks to see where they are going.

The scene begins to unfold in front of her eyes. She sees that the wolves have engaged a group of drones. Despite being outnumbered, the drones hold their ground as the wolves engage them.

A fallen soldier catches Roxy's attention and she looks on. She seen it was a wolfen regular, but the uniform he was wearing, was from long ago, during the War of Pride.

"Where am I?" asks Roxy.

More and more wolves brush past her when the scene changes.

After the blinding white subsided, Roxy seen that she was in the middle of some open plain. Roxy had never seen an area like this in Neon City and figured she must be in the wolf lands, quite possibly somewhere near the Den by the look of things.

Roxy stopped thinking for a moment as she glanced to her left. On the horizon, an army of drones. Turning her back to that army, seen on the opposing side, an army of wolves.

The wolves were fixing bayonets to their rifles and getting ready for a charge. Roxy tried to step back but was forced by some unknown energy to the front of the wolven line.

A single wolf steps out from the crowd and turns to the others. Roxy quickly recognizes him. He's the wolfen commander, Stone Black Wolf, in the fur.

Roxy stood perplexed, she had seen pictures of him in history books and documentaries, yet they didn't do him justice.

Yet there he stood, at the front, his army behind him. If only Roxy had a camera, she would record this unknown event in the War of Pride.

She seen him turn to the wolves and listened as he began to rally his men.

"My brothers, on the other side of this plain, waits our enemy. They may not be foxes but they are an enemy nonetheless. Since they have attacked us so close to the Den, I ask that you give your all in the defense of our homeland. Show them the fate that awaits all who oppose the wolves."

Roxy seen him stop for a moment and raise his rifle.

"For your country, for your homes, but most of all, for yourselves. Forward march!"

The scene glows white once more and Roxy is blinded.

When it settles, Roxy is standing in the middle of a field of bodies, both drone and wolf alike. The battle had been costly for both sides and a few wolves are left standing. Roxy looks hard and sees Stone among the few.

They stood around a single drone, who had managed to survive the battle. Roxy watches Stone stand over the drone and heard him speak, "Take it for study. We need to know more about these things should we ever face them again."

The scene shifts once more and Roxy is inside some kind of research lab. The air was cold and signaled to her sense of smell that she was underground.

A scientist enters the room followed by Stone.

"Initial tests proved a success. Yet despite our breakthroughs, have only produced a single vial of serum." spoke the scientist.

"I see, but have you tested it?" asked Stone.

"We tested an earlier version at another facility for security reasons. Results came back negative. But we have achieved so much more since then." replied the scientist.

"Project Maverick was a success then?"

"With this single vial, we believe so. Yes" spoke the scientist.

"Good." nodded Stone, "Inject the serum into me."

The scientist stopped in his tracks and gave Stone a concerned look, "But what if I'm wrong? Think of the consequences..."

Stone drew his sidearm and pointed it at the scientist, "Do as I say, wolf. Inject the serum"

Roxy watched the scientist shake his head and load the serum into a single syringe. She watched him administer the dose to the wolf and watched as history began to unfold.

Stone shifted in his seat while the serum ran the course of his veins.

Roxy figured he had a high pain tolerance since the alien cells were mixing with his cells, both on a cellular level and a genetic level. The wolfs deep breathing signaled immense discomfort.

After a few moments, Stone's breathing slowed to normal breaths. The serum had bonded with his cells, it seems. Not as disastrous as the scientist had foreseen.

"How are you feeling?" asked the scientist.

"Like a new wolf" said Stone.

Behind the two wolves, Roxy seen the drone break loose from its confines. In reaction, Stone drew his sidearm and put two in the drones head. It's lifeless body, slumping back onto the table.

"You fool! We need a live subject or the blood is useless." yelled the scientist.

Upon hearing this, Roxy figured the drone must have been one of them. That would explain the blood and serum. "But how do you tell the difference?" she said quietly.

"No matter" said Stone, "We'll use mine in place of alien blood. Project Maverick will proceed as planned."

"Project Maverick? What is that?" asked Roxy.

It wasn't in the foxen records from the war, at least the publicly available ones anyway. Maybe not even the ones deemed 'CLASSIFIED'.

The scene flashes and Roxy covers her eyes. Upon opening them, glances around wildly and sees that she's in a medical tent. It was almost like a vision.

"You okay? You look like you seen a ghost" spoke the nurse.

Roxy looks at her and touches her arm to see if she's real. A shock occurs upon fur to fur contact and causes Roxy to sigh in relief.

"Thank god I'm still alive."

The nurse looks at her funny and walks away.

"For awhile there, you looked like you were having a nightmare."

Her words hit Roxy like a ton of bricks and she remembers her visions. She had to tell them to the President and his staff. Their survival may very well depend on it.

Roxy left the tent and hurried over to the command tent, where President Kyle was. Her entry was unannounced to say the least and she was met with a few pistols pointed at her.

"At ease" spoke Kyle as his guards lowered their weapons, "So how's our research lady? You enjoy your little nap?"

Roxy found his joke oblivious to the situation and stops to look at him for a moment.

"It was enlightening" she said.

The president laughs a bit before speaking, "Would you care to tell me why you stormed in on my meeting?"

Roxy looked around and seen that most of his defense cabinet was in attendance. Everyone was in a suit and tie, but here she stood, still wearing her lab coat. She would have to explain this as best as she could, she noticed suits weren't used to hearing big words.

"Ahem. During my downtime after the incident in the other tent, had visions come to me. No doubt caused by my accidental contact with the energy orb inside the brain of the drone." Roxy stopped only momentarily, to see if they were still following her, they were. "During these visions I seen the wolves engaging an army of drones somewhere in the wolfen homelands. After the battle I seen the wolves capture one of these drones alive and run experiments on it. Soon after, I learned about Project Maverick, about how the wolves were using alien dna to create supersoldiers."

President Kyle raised his hand, "Hold on there, rewind and tell me once more, this time more clearer."

Roxy felt kind of embarrassed and frustrated at the same time. All this information she had, she just couldn't word it right. Taking a few deep breaths, calmed herself down a little more and tried again. This time a little slower and with more sense.

"I accidentally touched the little power marble in the brain of the drone. The reaction it caused, knocked me out. While I was out cold, seen what information the orb had stored. Basically I seen memories or mental pictures, the drone had. It was then, that I learned why the wolves had lost the War of Pride, they had fought an army of these drones and barely won. Then I learned about a secret project, code named Maverick, which the wolves were using to create superwolves. I also learned that the wolven commander, Stone Black Wolf, received the only working serum derived, created, from the alien dna. And that he, himself, may still be alive today. Better?"

A defense commander spoke up, "And you expect us, to believe your story? I think that stint in the other tent, fried what little brains you have left."

Roxy drops her head, it was a far fetched truth and she could hardly believe it herself, but it was all true.

President Kyle speaks up over the laughter, "Your telling me, the wolves have already faced these things? And that the war was won because of the event you described?"

Roxy nods her head in approval, thank god one of them is a believer she thought.

"Yet there is no evidence to back up your story, and to add insult to injury, you claim that a wolf, Stone Black Wolf, no less. Is still alive after all this time? A for originality, but with no proof, your theory looks to fail." spoke President Kyle.

"What about the wolf tag found and turned in by one of the soldiers? Surely that must help you see my point" spoke the vixen.

"It could just be a coincidence. Nothing more." said Kyle.

Inside, Kyle believed her, but for the rest of them to follow, they would need some solid evidence, a thing Roxy couldn't present.

"I'm sorry if I wasted your time" said Roxy as she bowed her head and walked towards the door.

"Wait" came the President's voice, "Say I believe you, where do you think Stone is?"

"If he didn't die like we were lead to believe, he may be here in Neon City." spoke Roxy.

The President stops to think, if he didn't die back then, what brought him to Neon City? He hated foxes for the death of his mate, yet now lives in their homeland. Kind of ironic, even for a wolf of such fabled stature.

"That would make him roughly around, what, 89, 90 years old?" asks Kyle.

"Factor in Project Maverick, then he is damn near immortal." replied Roxy, "Guess all we do is hope and pray he hasn't forgotten who he was."

"But a lone wolf, among the chaos of Neon City, where would we start?" asked Kyle.

A defense commander speaks up after a brief conversation on his cell phone, "Mr. President, we have lost Neon City. All remaining forces are falling back."

President Kyle sinks deeper into his chair, "My god."

The situation now seemed grim, with Neon City lost, their only hope remained with a wolf still inside the city. A city still under siege by alien beings.
