Chapter 2: Epilogue

-and he was awake.

Alive.

He lay, still curled in the foetal position in which he had died, on Damian's chest, the silky black fur soft against his white. He could feel the gryphon's cruel claws, gently caressing his form. The musky, exotic scent filled his nostrils, and he whimpered as a spike of terror hit his fragile mind. He didn't dare open his eyes. Not yet. Maybe he could try to delay it, grant himself a few more moments of desperate oblivion before the terror started again...

No. Damian knew he was awake now. He could sense the depraved delight, almost radiating from his tormentor, as the moment was savoured like a fine wine.

"Good morning, little one."

...oh god no...

Shaking slightly, his eyes already beginning to fill with tears - surely he'd soon have no more to cry? - Alex looked up, meeting the gryphon's burning, terrifying gaze of gold. He opened his mouth to speak, and the words would not come. Damian watched impassively, a cruel smile playing around his beak. He tried again, still mouthing silently. It was hopeless. There were no words for what he felt. He slumped against the warmth of the... the murderer's fur, his shoulders shuddering as he wept.

He felt the claws embrace him, rocking his trembling form back and forth, as if genuinely trying to comfort him.

"Sssh..." Damian stroked his fur. "Well done, incidentally. You died... exquisitely. No, really." He pulled up the fox's head to meet his eyes. "I honestly can't begin to describe it. That second...when your heart, your mind, your heart, your soul, just...ended. .." Alex felt the shiver run through the gryphon's body. "I wasn't sure if it could have compared to that first death..." He chuckled. "Turns out it was better."

Alex stared dully at his captor's chestfur, through the haze of tears. "Please. ..You've... you've killed me now...." He found it hard to say it out loud. "Can't that be enough? Please..." He felt a sudden sob, making his whole body shudder. "Just let me go. I-I'm begging you."

Damian laughed low in his throat, the vibrations resonating through his chest. "Don't worry, little one. I'm going to let you go." He smirked cruelly at the sudden intake of breath, as Alex looked up sharply, his blue eyes betraying a tiny seed of hope. "No, don't be silly. I'm still going to kill you. But... I thought I'd explained this. I don't want your death. I want the utter and total, tortuous destruction of your life. I want you to lose everything. So you," he hugged the fox close, as if cuddling a soft toy, "are going to go out there - into the big wide world. And then...oh, I'm going to enjoy this... I'm going to watch you try to live a normal life."

Alex blinked. "I - what?"

"Oh yes. Go to lectures, write those essays, talk, laugh, do the thousand insignificant but vital things that make up your exquisite little life...and know that I am going to end it all. As I said, Alex, I don't what you dead. I want to tear your life apart."

The full meaning of his words seemed to hit the fox with all the brutality of a hammer blow - Alex's vision actually dimmed for a moment as the horror flooded his system. Go out there. Meet friends. Have fun. And remember, it's all going to be for nothing, because I'm going to kill you over and over again until you die forever.

"Oh god... no, no, no..." his voice cracked, and he choked back a sob. This was it. This was when he truly realised just how painful the gryphon could make his life, how much agony he could experience. And it broke him. He felt the words form on his tongue, as if he wasn't the one speaking them. They echoed pitifully into the silence.

"Let me die. Please. Just let me die."

Damian smiled, a slow grin of pure sadistic pleasure. He knew. He knew what his prey felt at those words. He knew what they meant.

"I'm afraid not, little one." He traced along the fur around Alex's muzzle, forcing him to look him in the eyes. Alex might just have imagined it, but he though he saw a tear glisten for a moment at the edges of the blazing golden orbs. "I love you too much for that."

He stretched sinuously, gently letting go of his prey. "Well then... You've got a whole life to be getting on with. I'll go now... but don't worry, Alex. You'll see me again."

"Oh, and just to make sure that we can keep this personal... I will promise you this, little one." The gryphon bent his sleek, feathered head to look his trembling captive straight in the eye. The devastating intensity of his glare seemed to impale Alex's mind. "You try to tell anyone, anyone at all, you do anything to anything to try and bring someone else into this game of ours, then... and I swear this upon everything you hold dear... they will die. Screaming.

Right.

In front.

Of you."

Alex was barely aware of the gryphon melting away into the shadows, vanishing from the apartment like a ghost. He stayed where he was, kneeling on the cold, hard floor, head bowed, entire body trembling with suppressed emotion. Around him, a thousand little things beckoned for his attention.

He felt the tears begin to flow again, and he didn't know if they would ever stop.
