Chapter 2 -- Definitely Unrest

Morning came, again cold and hazy. Spyro's dream ended with a loud scream as he sat bolt-upright in his bed, almost hyperventilating. His shout woke Cynder with a start and she jumped up, turning to him. As the sleepy haze fell from her eyes she watched as Spyro held his head, groaning.

"What happened?" Cynder asked, the adrenaline rush from the scare slowly draining. Spyro shook his head and growled.

"I don't wanna talk about it," he mumbled, and got off his bed and walked past her, looking down at the floor. A pang of sympathy shot through Cynder, but at the same time she was also a bit frustrated with him. After a while she sighed and slipped off her bed, heading off to get some breakfast. She walked outside and, to her surprise, found a pile of berries nearby, with her name carefully clawed into the ground. She looked around but didn't see anyone, and nearby she heard a loud zapping sound as Spyro and Volteer tried a new electric method. Confused as she was she ate her fill and went off to find Ignitus. She wanted to watch Spyro but she had no real business with the other elders, since she couldn't learn their elemental powers.

Spyro was dead-tired, and yet again his tail-base was aflame, but didn't want Cynder to notice as he walked up to the balcony that night, using almost all his willpower to overcome the pain betwen his legs. He was a bit surprised to find both her and Ignitus waiting for him.

"Something wrong?" Spyro asked.

Ignitus cleared his throat. "Spyro, strange new portals have appeared far away to the south, west, and northeast, and enemy forces have been slowly filing through into our land. These portals are far beyond the territories you two have thus far explored."

"So, another mission?" he asked, and Cynder nodded. She looked at him oddly; he seemed to be restraining something. His hind legs were twitching a bit, but her attention was rerouted to Ignitus as he spoke.

"You have a few more days to stay here if you wish--the enemy has not shown any signs of movement. Still, you should leave when you both are ready." The two young dragons nodded, Spyro clenching his teeth. "Spyro, I'd like to speak with you quickly. Cynder, you stay here."

Cynder nodded, a bit disappointed that Spyro had to leave, and she turned to the starry sky. Spyro painfully followed Ignitus to the back of the main room, and sat down as the old dragon turned to him.

"Spyro, I can't help but notice that you're in pain."

Spyro turned a bit red but nodded.

"Don't be asheamed, young dragon; it's perfectly normal at your age."

"You told me already...but you didn't tell me why."

"Well, I suppose I'll be blunt about it...it's your body developing in preparation for reproduction."

Spyro just sat there, a bit stunned.

"It shouldn't last much longer, Spyro, I know it's been going on for the past week."

Spyro looked behind himself at the small figure of Cynder sitting on the balcony, hoping she wasn't hearing them.

"She's going through the same thing, Spyro, but it only hurts her when she's asleep. But, Spyro, I have also noticed that you haven't been talking with her much lately."

Spyro hung his head. "I...I just...there's so much going on lately..."

"I know, Spyro, you feel confused and lost. But try not to let that get in your way. You're her friend, and she's worried about you." With that the old dragon walked away. The pain between Spyro's legs had dulled enough that he could stand up without much discomfort. He sighed heavily, and slowly walked towards Cynder, his mind on fire as he tried desperately to think of something to say to her. Cynder heard him sit down net to her and she gave a small half-smile that he couldn't see in the darkness.

"Cynder...I..." He stopped when her paw went over his mouth and she turned to him.

"Spyro, it's fine. I understand." His eyes widened and she giggled at the look on his face as she brought her paw back down. "Though it wasn't quite what I expected, Ignitus told me."

"How'd you know?" he asked, embarrassed.

"I didn't until Ignitus told me about you...I asked him about why I was feeling pain when I slept."

"Oh..." The pain flared up between his legs as her eyes caught his, and he clenched his teeth, his head dropping quickly. In the moonlight she could tell he was turning red.

"Back again, huh?" she asked, and he nodded, still looking at the ground.

"I'm so sorry..." he said, but her paw again went over his mouth and he looked up.

"It's fine, Spyro. Though it's a bit embarrassing for both of us..." he could see her blushing too, "Ignitus says it happens to everyone."

He nodded and she took her paw away, looking back at the sky. She turned sharply to Spyro when he yelled and fell to the floor, vibrating in pain. "Spyro?!?! SPYRO!!!!" she screamed, and ran inside, calling for the elders.

Spyro awoke the next morning, his whole body sore and a strange memory constantly repeating in his head. He'd seen a white dragon, a bit like himself but older and bigger, fighting off hordes of evil, trying to rescue him and Cynder, but everything was foggy and Spyro hadn't gotten a good look at anything...and another dream where he'd seen a lone yellow dragon looking lost and scared. His eyes were blurred but they slowly came into focus and he heard voices around him. Nearby he heard quiet snifling, and he knew it was Cynder. He tried to move but the pain made him groan, and Cynder shouted with excitement and suddenly everyone was around his bed.

"Spyro? Can you hear us?" came Ignitus' voice. Spyro nodded and clenched his face as his neck muscles spasmed.

"Can you speak?"

He tried to open his mouth but to no avail.

"Spyro..." came Cynder's voice, and he felt her paw on his. He could see her but it felt like everything was delayed; as he moved his eyes he didn't see a change in vision until about half a second later.

"Spyro, you should rest some more," came Cyril's voice. "We should leave him for now." He saw everyone except Cynder walk away.

"Cynder, come," Ignitus said softly, and she reluctantly left her purple friend. Spyro was upset that they left, but sleep quickly took him again. He woke up much later, feeling a lot better, and hardly sore at all. He happily stretched his limbs and wings and jumped off his bed. Somehow he felt refreshed, and the first thing he wanted to do was tell Cynder he was fine again.

He didn't have to wait long--almost as soon as his feet touched the floor, she walked into the bedroom. She saw him and nearly tackled him.

"Spyro! I thought you were gonna die..." she said, his neck in a death-grip in her arms. He gasped and choked out a few words, and she quickly released him. "Sorry...but...oh, I thought you'd died when they brought you in! What happened?"

He hated seeing her worry like this and was glad she was happy to see him. He thought back and she waited patiently as a searching look came over his face. He sighed and shook his head.

"I don't know...all I remember is feeling an intense pain all over me..."

"I'll go get Ignitus," she said, but as she turned around he caught hold of her tail, and she shrieked in surprise and turned to him.

"We'll go get Ignitus," he said with a smile, and she grinned back and they walked out of the room together. They found Ignitus heading to their room, and his face lit up when he saw Spyro on his feet again.

"I take it you're feeling better, Spyro?" he asked.

"Much better," Spyro said. "Though I don't remember what happened to me..."

"It was definitely not something normal, I can say that," Ignitus replied, his face going serious again. "I have a feeling something happened that somehow affected you, but we can't tell what it is." He saw that there was more on Spyro's mind. "Is there something else you need to tell me?"

"Well...I remember having a dream or something while I was out..." He then told Ignitus what he could remember of the first dream; at the moment, he didn't remember the second dream.

"Hmmmmm...a white dragon...ice powers...but you say he looked strange?"

"Yeah...he didn't look like he was from here. But I couldn't really tell through the blur..."

Ignitus closed his eyes, thinking. "I was hoping this wouldn't happen..."

"What?" Cynder asked, gettng a little closer as she felt a story coming on.

"I'll put it simply," the fire elder said, slowly opening his eyes. "Long, long ago, there used to be portals that connected two dragon realms: the one we're in now, and a parallel world. Long before my grandfather was born, a savage war took place and the portals were deactivated. The parallel world did it to protect themselves, but also to prevent the enemy from acquiring any of the world's vast technological knowledge. That world was futuristic, advanced ahead of its time. We marvelled at their works, they marvelled at our world's natural beauty and simplicity. It was because of them that our constructions in this world can function, though we could not do much in return except carve things for them."

"Why not?" Spyro asked.

"Very few things grow in their world. Basic fruits and simple plants are all they have across a vast expanse of nothing but sky, sun, soil, and their technological constructions."

He paused and took a breath before continuing. "I get the feeling that the white dragon in your dream was from that other realm."

They saw that something more was on his mind. "Ignitus?"

"Hmmm?"

"Is there something else?"

Ignitus paused, then with a heavy sigh he said, "There's a prophecy...one that may just be coming true right now."
