#4 of The Predecessors

This is my first chapter. I'm sorry I didn't really introduce my main characters yet, but I'll get there. I just take time getting there. Please review this, so I know what I can improve on, or add. Mr. Shawnak isn't actually a main character, but he will be an important player throughout it. One last thing:

Humanity: The Predecessors

Chapter 1

"Okay class, welcome to HuD, Human Education." The teacher was a wolf in his mid to late thirties. He was tall and lean, with light gray fur, and golden brown eyes. He was dressed in khakis and a polo shirt. "We'll start off with roll call, introductions, and what you expect to learn in this class. After that, I'll give you a full rundown of what will be covered in this class. Now, when I call your name, I'd like you to stand up and give a description of yourself to the class. But first, here's a little about me. My name is Mr. Shawnak. I have been teaching this class for 10 years. This is my first year teaching in East Edge University. I graduated back in 4004, and earned my masters in human studies in 4012. I did 2 years of student teaching, then I started teaching my own classes. I have a wife and 2 kids that I couldn't live without, and I enjoy what I teach. Now with my intro out of the way, lets get started with the roll. I'll be going in a random order as well, just to keep you all on your toes. First up is going to be... Jack Bennit."

The white snow rabbit stood up from his desk with a loud sigh. He clearly didn't like being called on to do much of anything. His scruffy looking head fur and ragged looking jeans and t-shirt indicated that he was either a slacker, or was going for the grunge look. Jack gave a quick glance around the room with his forest green eyes, then began his self-description. "Well, I'm Jack Bennit. I'm from the Greater Valley area, but moved here with my parents when they started working for Biogen Industries. I don't like being judged on how I look, but more on what I do. That's why I look the way I do. As for what I hope to learn from this class, not much. Maybe where the humans went just before the wipeout. And that's all I got." He sat back down into his chair. A couple of the others were glaring at him, for some reason, but they went unnoticed.

"Okay, good. Thank you for sharing, Jack. Next we have Avangaline Gracewater."

A female otter near the front of the room stood up this time. She was a little on the short side, but she had a cute figure that was accented nicely by her pink and white summer dress. Confidence shone in her baby blue eyes as she began. "That's me. I'm from the coast, and I actually enjoy running more than swimming, so don't put me into one of those regular 'all otters love to swim' stereotype. I love going to The Station and having a burger and a shake. What I want to learn from this class is how the humans could build such amazing structures like the pyramids or stonehenge even before they had discovered electricity. And please, don't call me Avangaline, just Ava." The otter then promptly took her seat.

"Very good. Thank you, Ava. Now, we'll move on to Jerondax Medera."

They continued introductions in this fashion until all fifteen students had introduced themselves to the class. At the end of the introductions, Mr. Shawnak proceeded to inform the class of the course material and what was expected of them. At the end of the list of expectations, he added, "Now, there is one special thing about this class I want you to know. Here, we often take trips to human structures. Usually once every two weeks. You must maintain a 'C' average in all of your classes to join in these, but the trips are free, funded by the human research foundation. Our first trip will be to a nearby town that was well constructed and has been preserved by a local committee. It is the first year that these trips were free of charge, so I would suggest you take advantage of the opportunity." He looked around the class at all of his students and smiled. All of them seemed genuinely excited. At that time the bell rang, and he gave a final reminder to the students as they departed for the day, "Don't forget to have your parents sign your syllabus sheets and your trip permission forms. The permission forms aren't due until next friday, but it's better to have them in early."

Two of the students, Jack Bennit and Roger Gladsen, were practically a blur of white and black. The rabbit and the panda clearly had pressing issues to attend to. Most likely family related, if what they were talking about was any indication. Most of the other students left at a more leasurely pace. The blue wolf/fox hybrids, Jerondax and Vitrina Medera, took skateboards out of their backpacks and put their binders away. The foxes, Ilex and Zena Etton, did the same and the four left the room. Linda Borderland, the meercat, and Ava left just after them. The others left, and the last two out the door were the fox, Alexander Prim and the raccoon, Jason Lespin. These two had a slightly strange story about them. They had met as a result of a car accident in Alaska. Jason's parents had perished in the accident, but he had been taken in by the Prim family and had been raised with Alex for most of his life. Those two were very close to one another, but that is a story for another day. When the room was empty, Mr. Shawnak began preparing for the following day and planning for the class trip. He felt that for some reason, his time teaching at this school was going to be much more exciting than he had ever experienced.
