Somewhere - Episode 1 - No Boys Allowed

Story by Res Eden on SoFurry

The first episode of the musical story I had planned. I wanted to get real singers to perform the songs for this, but no one volunteered. I hope this shows how much more fun this would actually be if I had real singers. That way I could show you my thoughts on songs like when Carter is singing Lady Antebellum's Home Is Where the Heart Is, since it is a boy singing a song by a girl.

Somewhere

Episode 1: No Boys Allowed

The scene opens on a brown rabbit wearing black jeans and a black and white plaid dress shirt. He looks up at his new college, Wernheights Academy of the Performing Arts. As he walks through the doors and walks down the halls, the song begins.

_ _"Over the Rainbow" as sung by Jason Castro - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYd_doxZIYM

Sung by Carter Nivald

"Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,

And the dreams that you dream of once in a lullaby.

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.

And the dreams that you dream of; dreams really do come true. Carter notices a sign-up sheet

Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far for the WAPA Sirens glee club.

behind me. Carter signs his name on it.

Where troubles melt like lemon drops high above the chimney tops Carter signs his name on it.

That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.

And the dream that you dare to; why, oh why, can't I? Carter walks away, the scene

One day I'll wish upon a star showing on the sign-up sheet

And wake up where the clouds are far behind me. that it says "Girls only."

Where troubles melt like lemon drops

High above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me.

Oh somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.

And the dream that you dare to; why, oh why, can't I?"

The rabbit turns a corner and the scene ends with a view of the empty hallway.

The rabbit enters the auditorium at 4:00 P.M. for the audition. A few girls are sitting in the seats chatting to each other.

GIRL #1 Did you hear the Sirens only have one spot left open this year?

*GIRL #2 * I know. I'm seriously nervous.

A tall badger walks onto the stage, standing in the center in professional attire. She speaks to the auditorium, the lights blinding her from seeing who is out there.

JANICE Welcome, ladies. I am Janice Storm, the WAPA Sirens' coach and musical director of the theatre department. Thank you for coming to the auditions. Before we begin, we would like to give you all a chance to see what you will be a part of if you are to make the cut.

She raises her paw, snaps her finger and walks offstage as the music begins to play.

"Man! I Feel Like a Woman" - by Shania Twain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJL4UGSbeFg&ob=av3e

Sung by Valerie Blanc and the Sirens

Valerie: A slim hawk who hates men.

"Let's go girls! Come on. Valerie walks on stage wearing

top hat, white jacket, slim, black

_ blouse and shorts, and knee-_

_ high boots._

I'm going out tonight--I'm feeling all right.

Gonna let it all hang out She gyrates her hips.

Wanna make some noise--really raise my voice!

Yeah, I wanna scream and shout!

No inhibitions--make no conditions.

Get a little outta line,

I ain't gonna act politically correct;

I only wanna have a good time! Raises her hand, bending at the

_ knees before running stage_

_ right._

The best thing about being a woman

Is the prerogative to have a little fun. Smiles devilishly and moves

_ backwards, straightening out_

_ again and skipping towards_

_ center stage._

Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy! Forget I'm a lady.

Men's shirts--short skirts.

Oh, oh, oh, really go wild! Yeah, doin' it in style.

Oh, oh, oh, get in the action! Feel the attraction.

Color my hair--do what I dare.

Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free! Yeah, to feel the way that I feel.

Man! I feel like a woman!" She strikes a sexy pose.

_ The rest of the girls (18 of them)_

_ run onstage, circling Valerie_

_ and singing back-up._

Sirens: (quietly)

"Oh, oh, oh!" (repeat)

Valerie:

"The girls need a break--tonight we're gonna take

The chance to get out on the town.

We don't need romance--we only want to dance

We're gonna let our hair hang down. Valerie removes her top hat and

_ hair band, letting her blonde,_

_ wavy hair fall across her_

_ shoulders._

The best thing about being a woman She steps forward, center stage

Is the prerogative to have a little fun. while the Sirens pair up and

_ dance together._

Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy! Forget I'm a lady. Ruffles her own hair.

Men's shirts--short skirts.

Oh, oh, oh, really go wild! Yeah, doin' it in style.

Oh, oh, oh, get in the action! Feel the attraction.

Color my hair--do what I dare.

Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free! To feel the way I feel.

Man! I feel like a woman. Six of the Sirens, three on each

_ side of Valerie, lift her up, paws_

_ under her feet, taking turns to_

_ move them forward to make it_

_ seem like she was walking in_

_ mid-air._

The best thing about being a woman.

Is the prerogative to have a little fun!"

Sirens:

"Fun! Fun!"

Valerie:

"Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy! Forget I'm a lady. She sheds her white jacket, still

Men's shirts--short skirts. standing on the six's paws.

Oh, oh, oh, really go wild! Yeah, doin' it in style.

Oh, oh, oh, get in the action! Feel the attraction.

Color my hair--do what I dare.

Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free! Yeah, to feel the way I feel.

Man! The Sirens drop her into their

_ arms, forming them into the_

_ shape of a throne for her to sit_

_ on with her arms and legs_

_ crossed._

I feel like a woman."

The girls in the audience cheered and applauded the Sirens. Carter smiles and joins in.

*CARTER * (leaning forward to talk to the girls) Excuse me, do you know if there are any boys in the Sirens?

GIRL #1 You're joking, right?

Carter, confused, sits back in his chair as Janice takes over the stage again. The Sirens bow and leave the stage.

*JANICE * I hope you all enjoyed that performance. Shall we get on with the auditions? I'd like to hear Mimi West first.

All of the girls sitting in the audience stand up on stage and sing, only a few doing any sort of dancing. After the last girl, Janice stands onstage again.

JANICE And that's everyone. Thank you all. We will get back to you--

CARTER (stands and calls out) Excuse me! You never called my name!

JANICE (shading her eyes to see Carter in the audience) I'm sorry?

CARTER Well, I signed up to audition. Don't I get a shot?

The girls sitting in the chairs all giggle.

JANICE Oh, I'm sorry. Are you transgendered?

*CARTER * What? No. I'm a boy.

*VALERIE * (walks out on stage and yells out to Carter) So you must be Carter Nivald. Didn't you read the audition sheet? It's girls only.

*CARTER * What? Why?

JANICE The first year the Sirens were formed, no boys auditioned, so we just kept it an all-girls club since then.

*CARTER * Well, can I at least show you what I can do?

VALERIE Absolutely no--!

JANICE Valerie! (to Carter) I hope you aren't expecting a callback.

*CARTER * Well, maybe I can change your mind.

Janice shrugs and Valerie scowls. They both go to the audience to sit while Carter moves onto the stage.

CARTER Hello, my name is Carter Nivald, and I'll be performing Home Is Where the Heart Is by Lady Antebellum.

"Home Is Where the Heart Is" - Lady Antebellum - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGDmZw-liFg

Sung by Carter Nivald

"I felt I was spinning my wheels.

Before too long, the road was calling.

I packed everything I own,

So sure that I was leaving this small town life for good,

And not a single tear was falling.

It took leaving for me to understand

Sometimes your dreams just aren't what life has planned. Carter now removes the

_ microphone from the_

_ stand center stage and_

_ moves forward to sing._

Mama said home is where the heart is. Valerie rolls her eyes.

When I left that town,

I made it all the way to West Virginia.

And that's where my heart found

Exactly where I'm supposed to be.

It didn't take much time;

It's just south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

It's just south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

I worked third shift at an all-night diner.

Only stayed to save a little money for

Enough gas to make it to the east coast.

That's when I saw the brightest pair of

Deep blue eyes walking straight into my life.

And every night we talked till it became so clear,

And I could feel those dreams inside shifting gears,

'Cause love brought me here.

Mama said home is where the heart is. Carter moves back

When I left that town, upstage and begins

I made it all the way to West Virginia. singing with greater

And that's where my heart found volume.

Exactly where I'm supposed to be.

It didn't take much time;

It's just south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

It's just south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

And I'm standing in my veil about to say I do

As mama smiles with teardrops in her eyes.

And then I realize there's something mama always knew:

Love is what I really left to find.

She said home is where the heart is.

When I left that town,

I made it all the way to West Virginia.

And that's where my heart found

Exactly where I'm supposed to be.

It didn't take much time;

It's just south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

It's just south of the Mason-Dixon Line." Carter ends quietly.

CARTER (smiling) Thank you.

*VALERIE * (quickly, trying to get rid of Carter) Mhm. We'll let you know. Don't hold your breath.

The scene ends.

The next scene begins in Carter's dorm room. He's sitting on his bed while his two roommates are in the room. Music is playing in the background while Max, a jaguar wearing plaid dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, a vest, khakis and a beret, dances around the room.

*LEON * (a muscle-bound cardinal who plays football for the college) I heard the glee club here was fantastic.

*CARTER * They are. You should've seen them at the audition. But I think it's ridiculous that they only accept girls.

*MAX * This Valerie girl sounds threatened by you.

*CARTER * She didn't seem threatened. Just really snobbish and stuck-up. Definitely a feminist, and she thinks she's better than any guy alive.

*MAX * She must not have any plans to have a family then.

*LEON * Or she's a lesbian. *CARTER * It's possible, but may she's just had a bad history with men.

*MAX * Well, what about the coach? She seemed like she at least wanted to hear you out.

CARTER Yeah, she seemed nice, but Valerie just kept trying to shut her up or something.

*MAX * Have the audition results been posted yet?

*CARTER * I didn't check. (gets on his laptop to go to the site)

*LEON * Dude, can you quit dancing? Trying to figure out a solution and watching you dance are giving me a headache.

MAX I'm sure a lot of things give you a headache fairly easily. Why are you watching me dance anyways?

CARTER Nope. Didn't get in. The first audition I told you about, Mimi West, did.

*LEON * I bet you were the best one there. They just didn't choose you because you've got some extra packaging in your pants.

*MAX * What you need to do is fight fire with fire.

CARTER You mean not let Valerie into a football game because she's a girl?

*MAX * No. Start your own glee club.

*CARTER * I could ask the dance teacher if he could coach us.

*LEON * Us? So you want Max and I to join?

CARTER Sure, why not?

*MAX * It shouldn't be too hard to find other members for the club. It is an art school after all.

CARTER We could call ourselves the WAPA Forzas.

*LEON * What's a forza?

*MAX * It means force, but in music, it's musical force. Nice choice, Carter.

CARTER All right. I'll send an e-mail to Professor Rowland.

End scene.

The next scene is in Professor Rowland's office. He is a large, albino gorilla. He opens his laptop and checks his e-mail, finding the message that Carter sent him. He opens it and begins reading, finishing it as Valerie storms into the room.

*VALERIE * I hear you're planning on forming a second WAPA glee club with that Carter kid.

ROWLAND What? How did you hear about that? I only just opened an e-mail from him.

*VALERIE * Don't question me...

A flashback scene showing Valerie running into the dean's office, apparently crying her eyes out.

VALERIE Help! A student just got shot down the hall!

The dean rushes out, running down the hallway.

VALERIE (as she gets on his computer) Sucker.

She hacks into the academy's database and finds the e-mail that Carter sent to Rowland, opens it and reads it. She then closes with a shocked look, runs out of the room and down the hallway just as the dean returns, obviously confused.

*ROWLAND * You know it's illegal to hack into other peoples' e-mails?

VALERIE That's not the point! The point is that you better not start another glee club. The Sirens don't need to humiliate you again.

ROWLAND (after a few seconds) Get out of my office.

*VALERIE * (as she leaves) You'd be the laughing stock of the entire school.

Scene ends with Rowland's head in his paw.

The next scene is in the auditorium again. Rowland is seating in the seats with Carter, Max, Leon, and three other guys on stage.

*ROWLAND * I hope you guys understand that if I don't see you perform, I don't want to jump right into this.

CARTER We completely understand. We've prepared a number for this.

*ROWLAND * All right. Let's see it.

I Want it That Way - Backstreet Boys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fndeDfaWCg&ob=av3e

Sung by Carter Nivald, Max Cambridge, Leon Snow and the Forzas

Throughout the entire song, the six stand in a hexagon, paws behind their backs.

Leon:

"You are my fire.

The one desire.

Believe when I say

I want it that way."

Every time Carter, Max or Leon sing, the three of them switch places so that the one singing is at the head of the hexagon.

Max:

"But we are two worlds apart.

Can't reach to your heart.

When you say

That I want it that way."

Carter:

"Tell me why."

Forzas minus Carter:

"Ain't nothin' but a heartache."

Carter:

"Tell me why."

Forzas minus Carter:

"Ain't nothin' but a mistake.

Tell me why."

Carter:

"I never wanna hear you say

I want it that way.

Am I your fire?

Your one desire? Yes, I know, it's too late,

But I want it that way.

Tell me why."

Forzas minus Carter:

"Ain't nothin' but a heartache."

Carter:

"Tell me why."

Forzas minus Carter:

"Ain't nothin' but a mistake.

Tell me why."

Carter:

"I never wanna hear you say

I want it that way."

Max:

"Now I can see that we're falling apart

From the way that it used to be."

Forzas minus Max:

"Yeah."

Max:

"No matter the distance,

I want you to know,

That deep down inside of me..."

Leon:

"You are my fire.

The one desire.

You are..."

Forzas minus Leon:

"You are, you are, you are."

Carter:

"Don't wanna hear you!"

Forzas:

"Ain't nothin' but a heartache.

Ain't nothin' but a mistake.

I never wanna hear you say

I want it that way."

Carter:

"Tell me why."

Forzas minus Carter:

"Ain't nothin' but a heartache."

Carter:

"Tell me why."

Forzas minus Carter:

"Ain't nothing but a mistake.

Tell me why."

Forzas:

"I never wanna hear you say

I want it that way."

Carter:

"Tell me why..." He continues this note

Forzas minus Carter: until he rejoins.

"Ain't nothin' but a heartache."

Forzas:

"Ain't nothin' but a mistake.

Tell me why.

I never wanna hear you say

I want it that way."

*ROWLAND * (staring at them for a bit before saying anything) What was that?

*CARTER * That was "I Want it That Way" by the Backstreet Boys.

*ROWLAND * No, it wasn't. That was six guys in vests belting out notes and words.

MAX You didn't like the singing?

*ROWLAND * The singing was perfect, but you all obviously don't understand the meaning of a glee club.

*LEON * Don't you just sing and dance onstage?

*ROWLAND * No, but listen to what you just said. Singing and dancing. I didn't see any dancing up there in the first place. You all just stood there and switched places when a new person was going to sing. It's kind of an insult to me as the dance teacher to come to me with a piece that isn't even choreographed. You need emotion behind a song if you want to even sing it. On that note, I cannot risk coaching you all.

*CARTER * Wait. Risk? What are you talking about?

*ROWLAND * It's none of your business. (stands to leave)

*CARTER * Please, coach us. I would do anything if I could prove myself to Valerie and the Sirens.

*ROWLAND * Then that's what you need to sing. Find a song about proving yourself and sing it for me. And if you're serious about starting this glee club, then you need to make it quick, because invitationals are soon. What were you planning on naming the club, anyways?

*MAX * The Forzas.

*ROWLAND * A strong name to live up to. So find a strong piece. (he exits the auditorium, leaving the Forzas onstage)
