Engines nominal life support optimal shields at half power secondary systems nominal sensors detect large concentration of asteroids alerting manual pilot . . . activating cryo thaw

The man groaned as he felt the rush of the dream leaving him, the sudden shift from dream to real world then the frostbiting cold, and he forced his eyes open. He was the chief navigator and pilot of the nomad, a skidrunner-class vessel meant for fast hauling of small, but important cargos. Right now, he was in a cryo pod, a device that freezes the body to subzero temperatures in order to suspend bodily functions and allow the crew to travel long distances in relative comfort.

He was being awoken from his sleep. Something must have happened. He got out of the pod as the metal casket opened up. Frost cracked along his skin and flaked off of the orange jumpsuit he wore. He turned his head to the left to get a look at the status console; asteroids. Of course, why not? Damn navigational computers can pilot huge-G turns but can't fly through an asteroid belt. Leave it to a human pilot.

He made a low sigh and walked out of the area, warming up to the air as he traveled the small halls to the one-seat cockpit. He strapped himself in and a smile went across his face. He loved this job. He hit the only button that was on the touch screen console and it flared up with controls and readouts. He saw a few red lights but waved them off. They were on the non-critical systems and not a problem; he'd let maintenance handle it when they got to their cycle. A small slot at the bottom of the console opened, a steering yolk coming out, and he grabbed it. The autopilot turned off the second his fingers touched it and he flew off, gunning the powerful engines of the ship in with careful precision.

The ship came around into the light of the sun where it could be seen, a very inelegant ship by any standard. One could basically call it a needle flying through space. Just over 50 feet long and not much wider at its base, the cockpit was at the absolute tip. It may not look like much, but this shit can fly. It was meant to cut through nebulae, plow through small obstacles like these asteroids, and, most importantly, be able to take a beating. The shape of the hull made it fly like a fucking rock through atmosphere, but through space, the thing handles like a dream; which was conveniently where the predicament was now. He could handle it easy enough.

He took the ship flying through the asteroid belt, ducking underneath asteroids and skimming the edges, all of it so very fun. The beauty of the sparkling rocks, the flare of the sun, the reflection of frozen water; it was captivating.

His only problem, however, soon became evident. There was a massive shuddering and suddenly all the power went out. That REALLY wasn't good. If the cryo pods in the sleeper chamber lost power, anyone inside would die from the cold. Instantly awakening to the temperature, their bodies would need heat and be unable to get it. There was a slim chance of surviving that, however. There was NO chance that they could crash head-first into an asteroid and live; or worse yet, the planet they were quickly approaching.

It must have been a small meteor, maybe a microrite. It didn't matter. Hydraulics still worked, but they were useless in space, so he was trapped to deal with the metors. There were a few emergency systems available in this case. One was the emergency propulsion system. Put simply, two chemicals are introduced into the container and they explode, propelling the ship in the desired direction. In this case, he wanted to go towards the planet.

His hands went to the flickering console and flipped till he found the controls. He touched the key meaning the back of the ship, then hit the glowing rune that meant activate. A massive THUMP echoed through the ship and there was a huge kick as it was shoved forward with incredible speed; skimming meteors, bouncing off asteroids, and heading straight for the planet.

The little vessel cut through the atmosphere, the nose doing what it was meant to do: disperse heat and cut through air for better aerodynamics. However, going faster didn't help. He moved the image around, hit the icon that meant the front-bottom of the ship, and hit the activation rune again. This made the ship buck upward, allowing more of it to come to bear upon the air and add frictional forces. The ship was heating up, and without life support it was getting VERY uncomfortable. He simply gripped the arms of the chair and closed his eyes, holding on for dear life.
