Chapter 5: Shopping is Awkward

Now, a few minutes later, the two vehicles arrive at the strip mall, this little setup containing the usual nail salon, cut rate insurance, a small grocery store, and the adult store, that every strip seems to have.

They park their vehicles. Getting out, Kuro jumps out ahead of Kouji, with Shuichi waiting for Kuro to go over and try to sniff Kuroi or Hikari who are parked beside them. Kuro sits, nicely waiting for Kouji to unbuckle himself from the car and get out.

With the 5 standing around, they talk about where to go first, their final choice being the Books-A-Million. Shuichi's eye drifting out every now and then to look at the adult store on the corner. They walk off to their choice, now inside, Hikari and Kuroi go off to find Hikari's Shoujo manga. Over hearing other customers talk about the title Hikari is interested in, "Sakura Hime".

Shuichi and Kouji still stand at the counter, Shuichi reading the list of new mystery novels that were out. A title by Sue Grafton chasing his interest, " V is for Vengeance Unabridged read by Judy Kay". Since Kouji has read every book in the series thus far, he didn't want to wait for it to be made into an accessible DAISY format by the NLS. That would be 6 months to a year wait for it to be available. So, going over to the audio section, they pick it up and purchase it. Shuichi enjoys good read with Kouji while cuddling on the couch.

"Finally it's out! I've been waiting ever since U is for Undertow came out, even if Kinsey Millhone will never reach age 40, she's one of my fav female PI's." - With the audiobook in hand, Shuichi's eyes go back to looking for a way out to get to that adult store.

"The hell with it, come on Kouj I need a drink."Shuichi drags Kouji and Kuro out of the BAM and at full speed they head over to the adult store. "Now Kouj - don't freak - I, huh, kinda want to buy some toys for us to try." Shuichi stands waiting for Kouji's reaction.

"I'm fine with it Shuichi, but toys? Is our sex life boring to you?" Shuichi's jaw drops

"Well, no... But, huh, why not play a little game of control every now and then?"

"Sure I guess,"

Now they enter the store - Shuichi's jaw going even lower and then his eyes wide in embarrassment, a hard blush on his cheeks.

"Ooh.... They use that on ..." All of Shuichi's thoughts are half formed as Kouji and Kuro follow, every now and then Kouji feeling something on the wall. "Oh, Shuichi, look at these." Kouji is holding up a pair of furry handcuffs and collar. Shuichi looks like he's about to faint.

"... Too much control Kouj."

An hour passes with the two finally buying a 6 inch dildo and a pair of handcuffs. They return to BAM with a simple black plastic bag, only to find Hikari and Kuroi with arms full of books.

"So, find what you want to read then Hikari? What about you, Kuroi?" Shuichi asks, a little surprised at the number of books.

A look of annoyance on their faces, "Where'd you two go off to?" They asked at the same time in the same tone.

A sheepish look on Shuichi's blushing face - "Err, over there." Pointing towards the adult store, a blush coming across both Hikari and Kuroi's faces as they realize where Shuichi is pointing.

"Oh, okay then, was it... Interesting?"

Notes on DAISY

DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) is a standard for digital talking books. DAISY books are typically used by people with "print disabilities," including blindness, impaired vision, dyslexia. The DAISY format allows users to hear and navigate written material presented in an audible format.

In a DAISY book, content is presented with enabled navigation within a sequential and hierarchical structure consisting of (marked-up) text synchronized with audio.[1]

DAISY 2 was a standard based on XHTML and SMIL[2]. DAISY 3 is also based on XML and is standardized as ANSI/NISO Z39.86-2005.[3]

DAISY assists people who, for different reasons, have problems using regular printed media. DAISY books have many of the benefits of regular audiobooks, but they can include additional features because DAISY 2.02 provides up to six embedded "navigation levels" for content (i.e. other objects such as images, graphics, MathML etcetera) and for displaying synchronized text to speech. DAISY Multimedia can be a talking book, computerised text or a synchronised presentation of text and audio.[4]

Notes on NLS

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) is a free library program of braille and audio materials circulated to eligible borrowers in the United States by postage-free mail. The program is a service sponsored by the Library of Congress. People may be eligible for the program if they are blind, have a visual disability that prevents them from reading normal print, or a physical disability that keeps them from being able to hold a book. Persons with a reading disability, such as dyslexia, may also qualify for this free program.[1] Library materials are distributed to regional and subregional libraries and are then circulated to eligible patrons.[2]
