The Doe and the Wolf Pack

I've always liked Aesop's Fables. Short, sweet, and to the point.

A young doe was being chased though the forest by a pack of wolves. Suddenly the deer stopped, turned around and said:

"Shame on you!"

Startled, the wolves stopped the chase.

"Shame on you!" The doe repeated. The wolves looked at each other in confusion.

"Why would you say such a thing?" One of the wolves asked.

"This isn't fair." The doe told them. "It's not fair that the five of you should chase me. I'm only trying to find a place to bed down for the night. It's not fair that you are trying to eat me. I haven't done anything to you. When I am hungry I am satisfied with a small field of clover. I don't kill another just for food. I live and let live. Is it fair that I should die so you can live?"

The wolves paced in front of the deer, finally one of them spoke to her.

"Is it fair that your food does not flee from you? Is it fair that the clover, the grass, the flowers, and leaves are all in abundance and rooted firmly to the ground? When we eat these things we become sick, how is that fair? My pack hasn't eaten in seven days. Our hunts have all ended in failure. We are getting weak. If this hunt isn't successful we will probably starve to death."

The wolf approached the doe and asked, "Knowing this, what will you do?"

The deer turned and fled deeper into the forest and the wolves chased after her.
