Smoke and debris litter the landscape as well as bodies of griffons and different types of ponies. This was once the beautiful land of Equestria, home of ponies and ruled over by two royal sisters, Celestia and Luna. The sound of clanging metal resounds through the air. Slowly climbing a hill was a human dress in silver armor trimmed in gold. He carried with him a large sword in his right hand and a shield in his left. Attached to his shoulder guards was a flowing dark blue cape. Embodied upon the deep blue fabric was an image of a crescent moon and twin stars, one adjacent from the other. His long hair fluttered behind him and he stood high up on the hillside. In the shallow valley below was a massive army of griffins. Standing behind the large army was their king and beside him was Celestia. "Once my army is done destroying your petty resistance, I will kill your knight and then my dear your powers will be all mine." He chuckled deeply. "You will never win this war Greaves. As long and Lunar draws breath you will never rule Equestria."

"Is that so, well then I'll just have to make his death my main focus no won't I." The large griffin glared at the alicorn.

Meanwhile across the valley the human stood stoic as he was soon joined by three earth ponies, a unicorn, a Pegasus and a younger alicorn. "Please sir Lunar we must rescue Tia before that tyrant uses the Ring of Neria and drains her of her magic." The armored human looked to the young alicorn. "Fear not your highness; I will not rest until Celestia is safe." Behind the small group was their own army. "Unicorns ready your magics."

"The fools think that just the tiny group can overpower us?" The griffin king sneered. "They will be sorely mistaken. Advance!" They could not see the army beyond the ridge as they moved forward. The winds blew a bit harder, carrying with it the smell of death and decay. Both the smell of war.

"They advance. Prepare yourselves." As they drew closer Lunar raised his sword. "My fellow unicorns, give them a volley." A line of unicorns soon conjured up their magic and fired them over the hill high into the air. At the peak of their arc, cries ring out in the army below. "INCOMING!" One shouted. "It's a trap!" Exclaimed another. The bolts of magic struck many griffins upon impact. "Give them another." Again the unicorns charged up their magic before letting it loose high into the air.

"Hmm clever human, very clever" The griffin king chuckled deep in his throat.

The griffons on the ground scattered as the booming of bolts of magic stuck. Several took to the air to try and escape the blasts. "Pegasi, attack!" Numbers of armor pegasi flew over their heads and towards the griffons in the air. "Every pony else, charge!" The rest of their gathered forces swarmed over the hill and down to the valley below.

Both armies crashed against one another like a wave against a sea wall. The sounds of breaking armor, ripping flesh and screams echoed through the countryside. Lunar had led the advance and thus was the first into combat. He blocked claws, beaks, anything that the opposing forces could through at him. "So you're Equestria's human are you? It will be fun tearing your flesh from your bones." The griffin lunged at the armored Lunar and brought an axe down upon his shield. The force of the impact was great but it was nothing that he was not already used to. Blocking the swing, he used his shield to toss aside the axe and thrust his sword into the griffon's chest. Blood spurting from the penetration. The griffin's beak hung open as the weapon pierced its heart. Lunar kicked the creature off his sword and moved on, hacking and slashing any that stood in his way.

"Quite formidable this human of yours is." The griffin king stated. "He will save me as will my sister." The griffon laughed deeply. "You really think you stand a chance of winning this war don't you. Even if my army loses this fight I will return with more. I will not stop until Equestria bows to me."

Elsewhere in the battlefield, Princess Luna was using her magic against any that came close to her. She fought her way through the swarm of griffins until she reached Lunar. "What kept you?" The younger alicorn smirked. "I was caught up with something." The two were close, almost as if they were brother and sister. "We have to get closer." The human said as he was slowly cutting through swaths of griffins. "I am surprised you have not used your magic yet, my sister and I did not give you that power for nothing." Luna replied. As Lunar would advance, Luna would pick up the rear but that would soon change as a griffon picked up Lunar and dropped him a good distance away.

He slowly rose to the visage of a griffin carrying a large poleaxe. Lunar rolled to the side as the blade of the axe struck the ground beside him. "What does it feel like human? To be the only one of your kind in this world?" Lunar growled and rose to his feet. "My kind are fighting as we speak beak brain. " The griffin roared and raised his pole axe. Lunar quickly brought up his shield before the blow stuck. Another griffon decided to come up and see if it could get the drop on the armored human. But Lunar heard its wing beats and swung his sword over his back to block the sword swing from the flyer.

Again his shield was struck with a great force. Lunar knew he could not stay here for long. But even if that were the case, he had to deal with these two first. "Die human." The pole axe struck his shield once more and shattered it. Tossing the broken shield aside he looked up to the griffin before his as it reared the axe back for another swing, he brought up his sword and sliced the griffin across the chest. The one behind him struck his back and cut through his cape. Lunar yelled in pain as he dropped to one knee. "Now meet your end." Lunar then lifts his hand and held it in front of the griffon. "Meet yours." A blast of magic vaporized the beast. Slowly he stood up and held his sword beside him.

It was then that for some odd reason there was a path in the fray that just opened up for him. Not wanting to pass up this opportunity, he took it and ran with all the speed he could muster. Once he was clear of the clashing forces, he caught his breathe before running towards the griffon king.

"LUNAR!" Celestia shouts before the griffin king grabs her and drags her from his view. Lunar grit his teeth and ran clean up the hill before he stood just yards from the large griffon. "It's over Greaves. You have lost." The griffin chuckled. "Have I?" He turned to the side and allowed Lunar to see Celestia laying there on the ground, lifeless. The griffon looked and marveled at the ring. "She had more power than I thought she would. Surprising really but with her out of the way the only one left is her trouble making sister Luna." Lunar didn't speak, only stared at the lifeless body of the princess of the sun. His gaze then fell upon the king and he lifts his sword, pointing it right at him. "So you wish to fight me. Very well, I will humor you." The griffin king drew his sword and charged for Lunar.

The human stood and watched as the griffin stormed towards him. He quickly moved to the side and dodged the swing as it passed within inches from his face. The knight then brought his sword up, knocking the other and throwing the griffin king off balance. He staggered back a bit before getting his bearings and again continued his attack. With each swing, the human dodge. "Why won't you just be a good human and die?" A horizontal swing narrowly missed his neck. The two clashed swords until Lunar blocked on particular attack, tossing his sword up. Lunar spun around till his back was to the griffon and plunged his sword behind himself and into the griffon. A loud roar echoed through the air. The griffins that were still alive that heard such a sound, turned to see their king with a sword through his chest. Upon seeing this, they dropped their weapons and took off into the air. "How... You are nothing but a weak human. How could you have beaten me?" He gurgled before spitting blood.

"I am more than just a mere human." He twists his sword before pulling it from him. The griffin fell to the ground with a thud. Lunar stood there for a time before turning and walking over to the body of Celestia. He dropped to his knees beside her. Luna landed behind him. "Is she?" He nodded. Luna put a hoof to her mouth before tears started to well up in her eyes. Lunar scooped the larger alicorn mare up into his arms. "I am sorry princess. I was not fast enough. I should have fought harder." He sat on his knees as he held her in his arms. Soon they were joined by three earth ponies, a unicorn and a Pegasus. These five are the keepers of the elements of harmony. They see that Luna was weeping and did their best to console her.

It was then that thought popped into Lunar's head. It was a spell that he read of once. It would transfer power from one being to another. He lifts Celestia up and placed both her hooves over his shoulders. He looked deeply into her face. "What was given I now return." He drew in a breath. "Spirits of old, guide me. Help me save the mare I love." He leans in and laid his lips upon hers. Luna and the others saw what was happening. "Lunar no!" Luna shouted but it was too late. Both bodies glowed and pulsed as the magic he was given slowly entered Celestia's body but it was much more than just magic, it was also his life force.

As the transfer continued, Lunar's life seemed to pass through his mind. He remembered when he first appeared in Equestria years ago. He remembered how every pony about him saw him as something to fear. But then that's when he saw her. She was beautiful, her pure white coat, her long flowing mane and the majestic purple of her eyes. Before he knew who she was, he was in love with her.

Months after his unexpected arrival, he was part of the royal guard, proven himself through trial after trial till he was appointed guardian of both Luna and Celestia. It was then that they gave him his magic powers and it is these very powers he was giving back to the princess. The glow that surrounded their body soon fades and their kiss was broken. And all the ponies that were left gather behind Luna as they watched.

Celestia's eyes fluttered before slowly opening. Her vision was blurred but soon focused and the image before her was Lunar. She smiled to him as they stared into each other's eyes. Lunar placed a gentle hand against her cheek which she nuzzled into. But her smile soon faded as his hand slowly slipped from her and he fell. His breathing was labored and shallow. "Lunar, what's wrong?" He smiled to her and shook his head. "Nothing is wrong my princess. You are safe and my vow is kept." Celestia then looked to Luna. "What did he do?" Luna walked up to her sister. "He gave you back the power we gave him but also something more, his life."

"Please do not cry for me. I was only doing what I swore to do." Celestia looked down to the human who lay at her hooves. "No, I heard you. I heard your words and I want you to know Lunar that I love you too." Lunar smiled before he let out a long exhale and closed his eyes. "No please Lunar you can't go. I order you not to leave. I order you not to leave!" Tears stream down her face as she looked to the human who lay there.

It was sometime before a light shown down upon the ground. It surrounded both Celestia and Lunar's body. Two figures come down through the light, one bigger than the other. As they landed every pony gasped deeply before dropping to their knees. The one pony that stood was a mare. She was covered in a coat of white with deep read eyes. Her mane, tail and hooves were engulfed in flames. Her horn stood just like any other unicorn or alicorns but it was surrounded by six smaller horns almost looking like a crown. The larger of the two was a stallion. He donned a dark blue coat and his mane and tail were silver. Like the mare he too had one larger central horn surrounded by six smaller ones. Their cutie marks were circles that seemed to be like a picture of a glowing ring.

"Mother, father!" Luna said. The two alicorns looked to their younger daughter then to their eldest. Celestia's mother walked over and nuzzled her in an attempt to comfort her. "We are happy to have you back with us Tia." But regardless of her mother's words, the tears still came before she started to break down and weep. The stallion walked over to his daughter also and did as his mate. "Peace our daughter we have seen the selfless act of this brave soul. He gave his life to you without a second thought. As such we are prepared to grant him a second chance. But he will not be the same."

"W-what do- do you m-mean?" The two alicorns then looked at each other and walked over to Lunar's body. Their horns begin to glow and slowly Lunar's body rose from the ground. Both alicorns opened their wings and rose with the body. Their magic surrounded Lunar and enveloped him and a pulsing aura. The armor he wore falls from his body piece by piece till he was removed of it all. It was then that his body slowly began to change. His hands slowly formed hooves as did his feet. His legs formed powerful muscles. His long flowing hair changed from their normal brown to silver. Upon his head he grew a large horn. A tail sprouts from his rear and two wings grew from either side of his body. No longer did he have skin but a coat of deep blue fur like the color of his cape. Upon his flank was a crescent moon and twin stars, the same that were upon his cape.

As their magic around the now male alicorn fades, the stallion drifts to the ground. Soon he lay there, motionless but then he begins to stirred and slowly rise. Celestia gasped as he moved, as did Luna. Lunar looked at himself and was startled by his new form he fell at first but soon rose again and looked around himself. Seeing Celestia and Luna as well as the Elements he was not sure what had happened. Celestia tilts her head up and Lunar looked to the sky and beheld the two alicorns. "Lunar since you were willing to give up your life for our daughter we saw fit to give you another life. From this moment on you are now Lunar Star. Guard our daughters well brave soul for we will be keeping our eyes on you." With that the two disappeared into the heavens.

Lunar was not sure what was going on. He then looked over to Celestia. Slowly and wobbly he walked over to Celestia and looked into her purple eyes with his own. Tears once again well up in her eyes but he soon wiped the tears away and leaned in close, kissing her deeply.

Equestria was safe and the Griffin Empire was beaten. No pony who was there those last few days of the war now live, save for three. Celestia, Luna and Lunar Star.
