Chapter Three: A Lasting Daze

"Do you like that slut!?"

"That's right... just hold still..."

"It's too bad I promised not to go inside you."

"Go take the walk of shame you little cunt."

"I wanna' runaway, never say goodbye--"

Like brushing his teeth and eating breakfast, quickly reaching out and turning off the alarm on his cell phone was beginning to become an instinctive morning habit. It was strange, of all possible times of the day; Brian was incredibly coordinated and dexterous with his paws within five minutes of waking up.

"It's been three weeks, and I'm still getting nightmares about that."

It may have been an uneventful three weeks, but nonetheless, three weeks have passed with nothing more than a certain fox moping around his dorm room. It could be said that something deep down inside of him was afraid to go out, afraid to take the risk that the same thing could happen. Kerry and Brian, a duo that seemed virtually inseparable, had begun to slowly distance themselves from one another. If there was a tangible reason Brian could respond with when asked why, the memory of the other fox not wondering why Brian had been in the tiger's room for such a long period of time. The idea that the arctic fox was set up never quite cross his mind. Primarily, he felt betrayed that he didn't at least hear a knock on the door, or even saw her when he walked out of the room.

Before Brian could delve even deeper into his feelings, "Lying from You" by Linkin Park started to play in his head, no, it was his cell phone. The front display screen said something it hadn't for a very long time "Alex (Home)"

The relation between Alex and Brian was a very unsettling and confusing twist of feelings and emotions. Alex was a wolf, with pure glistening snow white fur, much like Brian. The two of them lived near one another their whole life and were very close friends. Eventually, they both came to terms with their sexuality using each other to come out of the closet at first. Of course, their first instincts were to grow close, and be Alex's first male relationship, and Brian's first ever relationship. Alex and Brian held off their emotions of one another for seven months. Unfortunately, the wolf's parents divorced and he was forced to move far away from the fox. As the distance between them increased, the time they spent talking decreased. Slowly but surely, Brian knew he was going to lose the one person he had ever loved, and was loved back by. Sooner or later, Brian began to think that Alex had found someone else. At least, that's what he assumed after connections between to two of them were severed for a long period of time, until now of course.

Almost hesitantly, the fox's thumb trailed over the key pad until reaching the green button, accepting the call. Brian's mind was blown seeing his caller ID, enough to make him stumble for words in the beginning.

"..H...Hello..?" The fox mumbled, initiating what would be a lengthy conversation.

"Well hello my little fox, it has been a while..." Alex responded. At first, Brian wasn't sure what to make of it, not only did he seem like he was hiding a secret, but his voice and overall voice tone over the phone had deviated drastically from the fond memories of their relationship together that he still possessed.

What he was thinking changed drastically, this wasn't going to be a final goodbye for the two of them like he had assumed, and this was confirmed when his small bent back ears twitched at a sudden giggle on the other end of the phone. "I'm coming to visit you this weekend, I finally managed to bug my mom enough to go back home and visit all my family and friends" Alex exclaimed, almost acting as if nothing had ever happened between the two of them over the course of months without talking to one another.

Finally, the arctic fox gathered up enough courage to ask the tough questions for the time being. Scratching the top of his head with his left paw, holding the phone in his right, Brian sighed and took a deep breath before he spoke.

"Alex... you have a mate... and I still love you more than anything. I'm not quite sure if I'd be able to handle seeing you and not being able to kiss you, or hold your paw."

Alex's voice tone didn't change as he spoke; it still remained the happy wolf on the other end of the phone, perhaps planning something to surprise the fox.

"You haven't read your email at all today have you?" the voice asked Brian, who shook his head, as if Alex could see.

"Alex, I woke up about ten minutes ago, I don't have class today, and so I decided to sleep late" he added, still trying to fully wake up. "I'll check it now hold on" Brian groaned drowsily as his paws clicked about upon the keys. "What email did you send it to me on?" said a weary fox, his eyes fixated upon the laptop screen to see his ten new emails. He passed the wolf's email about four times until his eyes shot upon at the subject. "Hey I found it, never mind. "My infinite love for you"? What kind of--"

"Just read it damnit" He interjected teasingly. While it took a few sips of red bull, the arctic fox managed to read the short e-mail.

Dear little fox,

I know we haven't talked in a very long time. It is mostly because I felt guilty about getting a mate, even if you did tell me to. Listen, I realize that no one is ever going to love me as much as you wanted to. I know we never actually were a couple, but I knew that deep down inside we were something close to it. I dumped Mark, and I'm coming to visit my family back home. I did this because I wanted to have a guilt free time with you my love. No one will ever mean as much to me as you do.

~Peace and paws little fox~,

Alex

Almost blinded by the amount of emotion poured onto the fox by the wolf in such a short amount of time. Brian struggled to find the words in his heart, rather than the ones in his head. "I...I Alex... I..." was his first attempt to articulate his feelings for the wolf, but nothing really became of it.

"Shh," Alex whispered over the phone, almost trying to reassure Brian.

_"Guilt free time with me". _He took a moment to try and understand what was meant by those words. Reading that one line once more, making sure he read it right. In doing so, the fox was completely blocking out whatever was being said to him, although it didn't seem too important.

"...but that's a surprise, so you'll have to wait until we spend time together." Those words caught him off guard, making him want to interrogate the wolf right away to get to his little surprise, but the thought of letting Alex know he wasn't paying attention to the conversation probably wasn't the best one sitting on the tip of Brian's tongue.

The two of them talked for a few more minutes before hunger started to draw the little fox from his conversation, ending it with an "I love you" that seemingly came out of nowhere. Brian closed his phone, holding the small cellular device against his chest, specifically where his heart was. A quick five minute walk down dorm road and the little fox was near the cafeteria where he grabbed a breakfast sandwich (not just one kind of meat in there, but two) and a Gatorade. That was a weird thing about the school cafeteria during the weekends. It was almost as if they figured everyone on campus would be too shitfaced to wake up before eleven in the morning, so they serve breakfast until four o clock in the afternoon. He sat there in the cafeteria for a good hour, eating his food very slowly, not looking up to make eye contact with anyone.

"Hey you... mind if I sit here...?" a cute voice from behind him echoed softly into his pair of white fluffy ears. Brian nodded discretely to the person whom which he made no effort to even look up at, and stranger noticed this as well. "Not going to even acknowledge me will ya, I was cool when you met me, but now I'm not so important" was the next thing the arctic fox heard, followed by a light joking chuckle. Brian's ice blue hues glanced upwards to meet eyes with a familiar character. It happened to be Brent, the bunny Brian had met at the club a few weeks beforehand. Suddenly, the depressing grimace was wiped of the fox's face. This resulted in him jumping out of his chair to give the bunny a hug.

"Eesh I'm so sorry, I really am. I've been in such a mess lately because of all these problems and people I surround--" he droned on until a soft furry paw gripped the fox's muzzle.

"I heard everything; I overheard a few people in my dorm talking about how someone got a freshman all to himself for a bit. I honestly didn't want to think it was you, but I know you went to that party afterwards because I had a friend there who said she saw you. I just want you to know that I'm here for you alright my little kit...?"

There was a pause in Brent's voice, as if he was waiting for a response, or perhaps subliminally asking permission to use the word mine when referring to Brian.

"...I... appreciate it Brent, trust me" Brian said, trying to create one of those smiles that he was a master at making out of nothing. Brown fur against white, Brent slowly attempted to ease the fox down a bit by taking his soft little paws inside his own. This was definitely the first time a male had ever paid Brian such attention in a public setting, thus he had no real idea of how to act other than blush and accompany it with a cute murring sound.

"Hey Brent who's this you're talking to?" interrupted the little moment the two were having, both of them quickly reacting by separating their paws and hiding them under the table. A few moments later and a black panther no taller than Brian came into the fox's view from behind him and sat down with them. Brent acted first to try to divert the panther's mind from catching them in the act of minor affection by picking at his food.

"Jeremy, this is the freshman I was telling you that I met at that club a few weeks back."

"Nice to meet you..." each said to the other, extending their paws out and shook. There was something strange about this panther, and it took Brian a few minutes to surmise this strange feeling dwelling inside of him. It was essentially an "it takes one to know one" feeling. The smart little fox knew a fake expression all too well, almost as well as he knew the R1 button on his Playstation two controller. Although this seemed to be the case, Brian couldn't understand why there would be some tension between the two of them in the first place.

Jeremy had a deep-seated jealousy for Brian that has sat around for the last two weeks. He had to listen to Brent constantly talking about this cute little fox he met at a club, and how perfect his fur was, and how amazing his voice sounded. It was enough to drive him crazy. As Brent's roommate, Jeremy has spent enough time to get to know the rabbit enough to develop feelings and emotions for him. Once he felt that he was starting to get the bunny's attention this sluttly little fox bumps into him at a club and throws a wrench into the whole system.

"Well, I need to get going to lab, then I have to meet up with Emily to go over the plans for the next GLASS meeting, I'll see you guys later" was all Brent said before getting up hastily, as if he was late, which he wasn't unless his lab was set back twenty minutes for the day. Now that Brent had left, the fox and the panther weren't forced to act pretty towards one another, but they still did for the meantime.

"You're Brent's roommate eh? I think that's pretty awesome" Brian started, trying to spark a non-aggressive conversation with Jeremy. He didn't take the attempt to kindly, offering a bit of sarcasm with ever word the panther spoke. Jeremy's facial expression shifted from what he had been displaying for the past ten minutes, as if he got an idea.

"Hey, do you know what time it is?" he began; seeming distracted all of a sudden, his body language reading that Jeremy was late for something.

"Three-twenty-seven, why...?" Brian said, sounding a little annoyed. He was getting the feeling that the panther developed a lie to curtail their conversation as soon as possible.

"Do you mind if I borrow your phone man, I just need to text message someone and let them know I'm going to be a little late" he added, trying to get the phone from Brian as fast as he could. With each inch that the white fox's paw with his cell phone in it extended in the general direction of the panther, he grinned even more feverishly until the device was in his black paws. He didn't leave the table, which ruled out the idea that Jeremy was going to try and steal his phone. "Well now, worst comes to worst he changes my background image, calls a sex hotline, or changes the phone's language to Spanish, nothing too crazy" he began thinking to himself. Jeremy took a few minutes until he was done, as if he was having a conversation with someone, or just writing an extremely long text message, probably hoping that Brian got charged by the word.

Upon finishing writing what seemed to be the state of the union address on his cell phone, "Wow that only took you ten minutes" Brian was tempted to add, but in the end, the little fox always tried to keep his enmity to a minimum. Jeremy got up out of his seat, pushing it in and turning his back to Brian adding "hey good luck with getting Brent to like you" while walking off. Brian didn't bother to thumb through his phone to see what damage is done; instead he just decided to walk back to his room.

A few hours later, while laying in bed working on an essay, TJ opened the door with a large package. While it looked big, it must have been pretty light, because he tossed it up into the fox's bed with ease.

"If it's cookies you better fucking give me some" the horse teased him, flopping into bed himself. With his claws, Brian started to shear the tape and wrapping around the box until the cover gave way and folded over to reveal a note and an adorable wolf plushy, about the size of the fox's torso.

Dear my little fox,

I figured this would hold you over until I get to be the one who sleeps with you in my arms. I love you so much Brian, I can't wait to see you again. I'll be at my uncle's house. I'm pretty sure you know where that is, but I put his address on an index card so you can MapQuest it just in case.

~Peace and paws my little fox~,

Love,

Alex

P.S. I'll bring a fox plushy with me so your little wolf can have a mate, much like the real wolf will have a real fox mate eventually...
