Chapter 9: Maia

As morning came, Katashi raised up from his bed. He was completely oblivious to the previous night's events. Sitting up scratching his head, he noticed women across the room. Her dark purple hair trailed down her back as she slept. Her skin was soft and clean as soft linen. The white garments of the night before folded next to her bed. "Maia," Whispered and forced himself up. His body still ached from training as he moved forward slowly. Her eyes opened slowly as he peered down at her. "Katashi..." She smiled and dozed back off.

Maia was no random girl she was in Akashi's class. They spoke to one another every day and were very good friends. "So you're awake," Ligeron smiled opening the door. "Ligeron...why is she here?" He asked and Ligeron sat down next to him. "She is a hunter, she came here last night with intention of killing you," He spoke. Katashi gasped and looked at him as if he was lying. "She didn't know who she was to be killing their name or appearance, all he knew was where he was," He continued. Katashi gripped his knees wanting to know how. How did she become a Hunter? How was she dragged into all this? Why her of all people? These questioned echoed through his mind quickly.

Maia turned in her sleep showing she wore nothing under the covers. A blush quickly went across his face as he looked away. Ligeron led him out of the room to let her rest. They came to a small empty conference room and sat down across from one another. "Your friend possesses a very rare ability, its called foresight. It allows her to get momentary glimpses into the future," Ligeron told him. Katashi looked at the commander curious. "Maia...she was my best friend, her parents died when she was in middles school and she was never the same. How did she get pulled into this?" Katashi sighed.

Luna stepped into the room smiling. "From what she told me, they came to her after you arrived here," She spoke softly. Sitting down she explained that hunters always go after there recruits once their completely alone. Maia having the ability to glance into the future would be an interesting addition to their ranks. Katashi became angrier hearing that his death pulled her into this. "This was her weapon," Luna motioned for a nurse to set it down. The nurse sat down a large crossbow across the table. "Research and Development has found it accesses her spiritual energy while she's still alive, it's a taboo for the underworld," Luna touched it as Katashi looked over it. "She fired at Luna and the hospital which is why Luna was forced to use her Yansei, Toketsi Kori Aijin," Ligeron explained.

Suddenly there was a commotion from the hallway. "You're that hunter! Why do you deserve to be in here when so many of us are killed by your kind?" A large goliath of a man yelled. Maia stood in the doorway of Katashi's room shaking. "I...I," She muttered as he drew a blunt headed hand ax from his robes. As fast as he drew it, Luna appeared in front of her smiling. "Well now I'm sure you know that weapons in my hospital are strictly forbidden," She smiled and the man shook. The man gulped staring at the white fox terrified. "My apologies Commander!" He turned and ran down the hall. "Thank you," Maia looked down.

Luna took her hand and led her to the meeting room. "Katashi!" Maia gasped and ran forward hugging her friend. "I missed you so much! Everyone said you were gone forever!" She cried against him. Katashi sighed and hugged her back. "It'll be ok Maia," He huffed her softly. Maia released him and looked over at the crossbow. Her eyes narrowed and she shivered softly. "Gonjon..." She hissed and looked away. Gonjon was the first of the immortal generals. He ruled over all of Asia. He was also well known for sleeping for days because no one could really challenge him. All of the generals were near the level of immortals. They exist simply to execute the Commanders and lead their men.

Sensing Maia's growing anger Katashi lead her outside. He wanted to let her calm down and relax a little bit. Leading her out to the hospital courtyard, she took a deep breath. "They told me this city was horrible, it's actually very beautiful," She smiled looking over the edge of the ring. The sea was calm today and the wind was calm. Over the side of the rings, vines and hanging flowers bloomed as they hung down along the side of the floating ring. A small dragon like creature poked it head out from its nest in the vines. With a small chirp, it flapped its wings and zipped up landing before Maia. She gasped and watched as it looked up at her chirping. Its scales dark green with red details. "That's a Wevryn's, there very common here," Katashi explained.

Maia smiled and reached down petting it softly. It pushed up against her hand before turned and flying off. "They told me so many horrible things about this place," She smiled the sun warming her. "Why did you go with them?" Katashi asked and looked next to her. She looked at him before looking out at the sea. She went on to tell that once she heard that Katashi had passed away. She locked herself in her apartment. Then a few days after she had done so a man came and told her she could see him again. She went with him. They took her far too northern Japan to a very heavily guarded temple. Inside she met Gonjon who convinced her to join them.

"So you wanted to see me again huh?" Katashi smiled to change the subject.

Maia nodded neither of them noticing the two figures behind them. Titan and Artemis standing silently watching the two talks. "Do you think she's a spy?" Artemis asked the goliath. "Hm she doesn't even look dangerous," Titan looked up at the doe on his shoulder. "Hm...do you think theirs even a point on keeping an eye on them?" Artemis leaned against his horns. He shrugged as the large man from before came up behind them.

Katashi gasped and suddenly turned his sword forming. With a loud clang, his sword caught the larger man's hand ax. Their weapons pushing against one another Katashi's sword shaking slightly. "I will crush her!" The man growled and Artemis stood drawing her bow. Titan raised his hand stopping her from firing. "Let's see what he does," He smiled. Katashi forced his hand forward pushing the man back. "Stay away from her," He held his sword up his hands shaking. The man came again and Katashi raised his sword to block. Suddenly his sword vanished and he gasped as the blade came down. Suddenly an arrow fired from Artemis and knocked the ax out of his hand. Flying off her hand moved so swiftly that it seemed invisible. Another arrow quickly flew knocking it father away. "I think you need a quick lesson with me kiddo," She smiled and the man quickly ran. He knew he stood no chance against the two of them.

Maia and Katashi watched as the two moved over to them. "Come here kid," She snapped and Katashi stepped forward. She lifted her bow and brought it down his sword reappearing stopping her bow. "Do you know why it appears? I know you know how to call upon it but do you know why it listens?" She smiled. "No not really," He held back against her. "A Yoso is bound to its master; their spirits are one and the same. If you are strong it is strong, if you are happy it is happy, if you are afraid it will panic, and if you doubt yourself you both will die," She explained and pulled her bow back. Katashi looked at her then his blade. Katashi's blade was simply a living creature much like himself. They relied on each other to fight and to win. Suddenly an arrow flew towards him. With a gasp, Katashi could feel his blade begin fade slowly.

The thought ran through his head and suddenly he gained a new power. His blade allowed him to swiftly whip his hand up and slice the arrow apart. Falling in two halves it clicked landing on the ground. He gasped and raised his sword making her smile. "See kid, if you stop wondering if you'll win then you'll win," She turned and ran forward slamming her bow down against his sword. Slamming their weapons against one another Maia watched. This was the first time she had seen Katashi actually smile. A real smile showing he was happy. This place found a place for him to fit in. In school, he never seemed to find his own group. They all seemed to reject him making him stand out and become a target for bullies.

However, here he seemed to be having more fun than anywhere on earth. Suddenly she stopped her attack and Katashi raised an eyebrow. Holding out her hand, she showed him a white scroll. "This is your ticket home for now," She smiled and Katashi gasped. "You mean I get to go home?" He reached for it. "Only till Andreas gets your test ready once its ready we'll call you back here got it?" She pulled it back and he nodded. Katashi took it and stared at it. He was actually going to be able to go home for a while. He looked up at Maia as Titan handed her one as well. They both smiled at one another and later on that day they met Ligeron and Sayomi at the high temple.

They stood before a great doorway both holding their scrolls. "It will take approximately three days for the final test to be prepared," Ligeron told them. "And about one week has passed in your world for the time you've been here," Sayomi looked them over. With a sigh, Katashi and Maia held up their scrolls. Suddenly a bright blinding light engulfed them. It faded quickly and both of them had vanished. Sayomi bowed to Ligeron and began to walk away.

He suddenly heard Ligeron fall to one knee and throw up. Sayomi gasped and whipped around to see Ligeron releasing the contents of his stomach. "Sir are you ok?" He helped him to his feet. Ligeron nodded unable to answer as he gasped for air. "Get me to the hospital..." He sighed before passing out.
