#7 of Old Stuff

This was a rather unique piece to produce. At the time, I had been doing research on the WWII concentration camps, more specifically Auschwitz II. I also wanted to play around with some post-apocalyptic concepts. I wanted to challenge myself a bit, so I decided I wanted to a species Transformation that I was not used to doing. Overall I liked how it turned out.

Waking up has always been a chore for me. Especially since I have been dreaming a lot. I can remember the times when I enjoyed thinking about my dreams, but the memories are too painful. I already knew what this one meant; it meant I would have to face another rotten day. There was no point in lying in bed when I had work to do, so I stood up, got a towel, and made my way to the bathroom. Despite what had happened eleven years ago, every step I took felt so, alien, and the tiles on the bathroom floor felt even weirder. I stepped in to the shower and closed the door. I let out a sudden gasp of surprise when the cold water hit me. But I shouldn't have been so surprised; after all, the hot water system had just recently been put in so there will still be bugs in the system. The hot water came on a few minutes later, but by that time my fur was already wet and plastered to my body.

Wait, what do you mean, "What fur?" Have you been living in a hole for the past eleven years? Well, it sounds like you have, so I will bring you up to date on the current events. Well, the human population of earth has been cut by a little less than half, the president died, Starbucks went out of business... What, you seem surprised? Starbucks was doomed just a few years ago. Oh, the population thing! You really have missed out haven't you? Well, I guess then it only makes sense to start at the beginning, or at least what happened to me.

It happened, as you might expect, eleven years ago. Me and my brother Steven were in our parent's house, simply playing. I was 10 and he was eight. We really didn't fight, and I can tell you it wasn't because we were always happy. He was born a Hemophiliac and while he could take the medication, we still had to be careful. I remember his brown eyes, his black hair, and the way he laughed like an idiot at just about everything. Regardless, I was still his big sister. Anyway, we were simply playing some video game of his, I didn't pay much attention to games, so its kind of obvious I was loosing.

"Hey! You can't do that, it's cheap!" I yelled.

"It is not! If anything you're the one cheating." He said.

"You used that same move five times in a row!"

"Well you're doing nothing but button mashing!"

Our mother came into the room and said, "If I hear you both arguing any more, the game goes off and you both go to your rooms for the rest of the day."

"Sorry mom," we both said.

"Good, now I'm going out for the rest of the day, I think you can both behave yourselves while I'm gone. Be back by ten. And Steven, be careful."

It's kind of obvious that he was my mother's favorite, sometimes it seemed like I wasn't even there. I went into my room to get my pet ferret, Sandy, and brought her into the living room. She was beautiful with white fur and black stripes of fur running down her arms, legs, and across her face. What happened next was so unexpected, that only ten minutes after my mom left, my life changed. I hate to sound cliché, but it happened so suddenly, I didn't know at first what had happened. It wasn't like in the movies where there are lots of flashing lights, sounds, and colors. This abduction was silent and swift. Before we knew it, Steven and me were in a strange room, and tied to tables made of a weird blue metal.

"What's going on?!" asked Steven.

"I don't know, I cannot move!" I replied.

Then the whole room lit up, and staring down on us both were weird aliens! They were tall, thin, and red. Unlike in the movies these aliens weren't stick thin with big black eyes, they were more like skinny red humans, only they had no nose, a mouth with razor sharp teeth, and eyes attached to antenna on their head. And through a window in front of me, I could see, earth. We were in space on an alien spacecraft! They started conversing in a language I could not understand, it was a series of growls, clicks, and screeches. The next thing I know Steven is being wheeled away to a separate room through an automatic door.

"What's going on? Help!" Yelled Steven as he was wheeled away.

"Steven, everything's going to be alright. I will be right here, we will get out of this."

"I don't know, Karen. But please, while I'm gone, can you do something for me?"

"Anything! And you are coming back, just name it!"

"Well, you know how I try to be the brave one, every time I go to the hospital?"

"Yeah..."

I will never forget the words that came out of his mouth next, "Karen, can you be brave for me?" Those were the last words I ever heard from him. I waited for what felt like hours, until the alien wheeled out the same table with something bloody under a cover. I knew that was Steven, there was no way he could have survive anything sharp, they probably didn't know about hemophilia. They placed his body in a capsule, pressed a button, and it was launched into the black depths of space. Sandy came out of the pocket she was hiding in; the alien saw her and grabbed her.

"Get your grubby hands off of her!" I yelled as the alien took her to a table. It strapped her down to the table, and then came towards me. It took a syringe and drew blood from me. The blood was placed on a platform and it looked at the blood under some kind of microscope. The alien moved my table beside the table where Sandy was strapped down. Then, the alien flipped a switch and walls came up around the two tables. A light lowered and I heard the sound as if the light itself was charging up. A blinding flash of purple light hit us, and I thought for a second that Sandy and me were dead.

We weren't dead, but I started feeling really weird. A pain ran all through my body, and I screamed. I saw as white fur sprouted all over my body, and it was followed by black and brown stripes of fur. My feet started to change and they broke through the socks on my feet. I had only 4 toes, and my legs looked a lot like Sandy's. My face became longer and my ears traveled up my head and my teeth sharpened. I could feel that underneath me something was growing out of my spine, I didn't know what it was at the time, but I knew it was part of me. I was done.

The straps on my table unlocked and so did the ones on Sandy. Sandy remained unchanged, but I know looked more like Sandy. In fact, I was like a human sized version of her, I could feel that I had her head, her feet, her fur pattern, and I figured out that the thing that came out of my spine was a long white and brown tail. I tried standing up, but I couldn't, so I tried to see over the metal shield, and accidentally found that I could stand if I bent my knees and stood on the ball of my foot. Sandy leaped onto my shoulder as she always did back home. The metallic shielding disappeared and the aliens looked pleased with their results. I was too weak to fight back as they strapped me back onto the table along with Sandy.

The same metallic shielding slid over the window where I could see the earth. I heard the same charging sound that I heard from the light though it was much louder. The thought running through my mind was that they would blow up the earth, but when the shield was gone, earth was still there. I breathed a sigh of relief that something must have gone wrong with their ray-thingy. Again, the straps opened on the table and again Sandy crawled up my shoulder. I was so angry, I charged forward with the little bit of energy I could. But in the nick of time they had beamed me back to my living room.

It was much darker than before, and my head hurt really badly. I thought I must have bumped my head and fallen unconscious. It was a dream; it was all a dream. I knew that Sandy was still on my shoulder, I could feel her claws digging into my skin, and she seemed kind of spooked. I heard the front door open and I rushed into the lit kitchen.

"Mommy!" screamed as I rushed into her body. I hadn't called her 'mommy' since I was seven, but I was so scared from my nightmare that I had forgotten that.

She pushed me away and screamed. "What the hell are you?!" She yelled.

"Mom, its me," I said, "Karen."

"You're not my daughter! Get out you vile beast! Get out!"

It was then that I looked at my reflection in the window behind her, and I was still like a large part human part ferret version of Sandy. My mother started to throw plates, glasses, and anything that she could get her hands on at me. She actually managed to hit my shoulder with a plate and my head with a glass. I ran as fast as I could to my room and locked the door as Sandy scurried into my room.

My own mother, the person who had cared for me for 9 years had thrown stuff at me like I was some rodent! I began to cry, in sadness, disbelief, and maybe a hint of anger. I curled up in the fetal position and hugged my knees to my chest. Sandy crawled over to me; I picked her up and started to pet her. I guess in a way she was more of a sister to me now.

"Oh Sandy, what am I going to do? I have no one now but you."

Just then I heard my mother talking on the phone. "Hello, police? Yes, I need an animal control officer here right away! I'm at 477 Signal Ave. Please hurry!" She hung up the phone. "Oh my god, Steven!" She started calling his name with no response.

It was then that it hit me full force. Steven was dead. I was too panicked to think about it on the ship. I cried even harder and even managed to scream. He was gone forever, he wasn't just taking a trip to the hospital, and he was never going to come back. I could never hold his hand, or touch his black hair. I remember when dad died, I held onto him all nigh, and let him cry it out while I remained the big sister. I can never hold him now, and I couldn't even hold his hand on the ship. Besides Sandy, I was truly alone.

The animal control was even surprised at my appearance. I was going to go without fight, but the guy put the rope around my neck anyway despite my protest. My mother kept her distance, and Sandy remained in the pocket of a pair of shorts that I had put on. Once in the car, I undid the neck rope, and went up to the screen in front asking him to change the radio station. He jumped out of his skin, stabilized the vehicle, and slammed the screen shut. Once at the kennel, I was led with the rope to what looked like a jail cell. Once in there, I couldn't believe that there were others like me. Well not exactly.

I later learned that the aliens had pretty much used that light to do to humans on earth what they did to me. Any person near an animal was instantly turned into a hybrid of whatever the nearest animal was. Of course this ray had a 45% chance it would work on each human, so naturally, about 1 in every 3 or so humans were affected. It didn't matter who you were, it would get you, or it wouldn't. And I later found out that humans are the most adaptable creatures in terms of DNA, after all, they are few races in the Universe with a missing gene. Basically, the earth was a giant beaker, just waiting for something to fill it. And the human race was the lab rat.

Anyway, in the cell were half human half animal hybrids, 4 of them. There was a dog man, a Doberman I believe. There was also a wolf woman, a fox boy, and a cat girl. I stayed in a corner away from them as the Doberman yelled at the guard about human rights. The fox boy came towards me. Just from his size, I could tell he was about 7, he reminded me of Steven. I was about to cry, but I could tell from the way his tail turned inward between his legs and his ears sat on his head that he was on the verge of doing the same.

"Hey kid, you okay?" I asked the fox boy. He shook his head.

I really needed my personal space, but I couldn't get over how sad he looked. Another thing that I noticed was that he had black hair on his head. I opened my arms, and he just fell right on top of him. His fur was soft, almost silky. His tears streamed down my chest and I let him cry there for a while I ran my fingers through the black hair on the top of his head. I felt like I was with Steven for a moment. In that small moment that seemed to last forever, that was heaven. I was a big sister again.

He lifted his head and I asked him, "What's your name?"

He wiped away a tear from his muzzle and said, "Lee."

"Where are your parents?"

"I don't know," he said with a sniffle, "the bad man took me away before daddy got home. What about you?"

I recalled how my mother reacted and said one word, "Dead."

The boy continued crying on my chest until he fell asleep. That morning I had to explain to Lee how to stand using his new legs and paws. The next morning, we were all moved to a camp, an army camps of sorts. The entire time I never let go of the fox's hand. My teacher had shown us pictures of a concentration camp called Auschwitz in class once, and this looked pretty similar. Men with guns, barbed fences, and such. We were ordered to take off all of our clothes, and even though fur covered all of us, it was still degrading. If were looked like animals, we were treated like animals. When I emptied out my pockets, Sandy scampered up my arm. One of the army men was about to take her away.

"No, Please mister! Don't take her away! She is the only thing I have left," I said and started to cry. He was a merciful man, and gave Sandy back to me. Lee and me were escorted to a barracks and he took the bottom bunk.

We spent what felt like a month in there. Naked, starving, surviving with a single meal of dog food a day, and excess rainwater from the leaky roof. One day, a man in a white suit from the experimental building came and took Lee away. I fought to keep him with me, but the other men overpowered me and Lee was dragged to the hospital. I never saw him again. That night I cried so hard, I think some of the others complained. One woman comforted me. I was thankful for it, but it wasn't enough. She was taken the next morning before I woke up.

Months past, and I could feel my strength slipping away. I was barely alive, and the rumor going around the bunks was that I was next. Naked, hungry, and with no one but Sandy I slept that night knowing that it was my last. But then, my knight in shining armor came. That night there was a raid on the camp. I woke up at the sound of someone bursting into the barracks. It was a Wolf man carrying a large gun, he had a scar over his right eye and he was covered in bulletproof camouflage.

"Everybody follow me, we are getting you out of here!" yelled a human girl behind him, clad in the same armor. All of the people got up and rushed for the door, all but me. The wolf walked up to me in my bunk. The lady looked me over and said:

"She's suffering from mal-nutrition, we need to get her to base now or she could die." I cowered at her voice and at by that time I had grown to fear humans.

The wolf man leaned over and asked me, "What is your name?"

"K-Karen..." I managed with a small breath.

"Karen, that sounds like a brave name. You must be a brave little girl," he said, "Can you be brave for me and let me carry you?"

With a little energy, I managed to nod my head. He scooped me up in his big arms and carried me through the door. "My name is Renard by the way, and that nice lady beside me, her name is also named Karen."

I finally knew the name of my knight in shining green and brown armor, and his name was Renard. I slept in his arms from then on. When I awoke, next, I was in a military hospital, and I actually had clothes! I was so happy, even if it was just a hospital gurney. Beside me were Renard and Karen.

"Your awake," declared Renard.

"So you are," said Karen, "This big 'ole softy here never left your side the whole night." She then gave him a little nudge with her elbow.

"Well, how do you feel?"

"Hungry and thirsty," I said, "Wait, where is Sandy?!"

"Oh, this little critter?" asked Karen, "She was found clinging for dear life to your chest fur. She is okay." She put Sandy on the bed and she scurried up into my arms.

"Well, I know this is a little soon, but I heard from the other survivors that you don't have any parents," said Renard, "so I was wondering if you wanted to stay with me for a while?"

I was speechless. For once, someone was actually inviting me to live with them. "Yes! Yes, yes, yes!"

"Alright alright," he said, "Well, first, I got you some new clothes so we can walk to my dorm."

I was Delighted with the new clothes. As soon as he was out of the room, Karen helped me into the new clothes.

"In case you didn't know, me and Renard live in the same dorm, so you will be living with both of us."

"Really?! Oh thank you mommy. Oh, I mean..." I stammered.

"That's okay, you can call me whatever you want."

Me, Karen, and Renard made our way to his dorm, and along the way, I knew I had a new family. Now here I am, a 21-year-old ferret women, fighting under the command of Renard and Karen, living in a recently captured hotel. The people that I work with are the men, women, and animal men and animal women who fight for freedom. I fed Sandy and walked out into the hallway. There was a little Fox boy there, which looked a lot like Lee, there with a human boy that looked like Steven. I chased after them in my heavy camouflage, and they ran around the corner. When I got there they were gone, and I knew it was not only a memory, but also a sign that one day all of this fighting would pay off. That one-day me and my kind would co-exist with humans. I turned around to see a small lizard boy covered in rags, with Karen behind him.

"We found him in a concentration camp about five miles from here," said Karen.

I bent down to the boy and said, "What's your name?"

The boy gave a sniffle and said, "Lee."

"Wow," I said, "Lee, that's a very strong and very brave name. I used to know a boy about your age who was brave. Can I ask you a favor Lee?"

The boy nodded and I said, "Can you be brave for me?"
