After our major hug-fest following the very close escape of a zombie horde, which was still crowding around the bottom of the ladder leading up to the platform we were on, we all decided to spend the day there as we had plenty of supplies to last us for a while. I sat down while John took a look at my leg since he had been planning to major in medical studies for a while and was well advanced in the subject. While he examined and probed it, I held his free paw and looked out at the skyline that was clearly visible from our position. Xander and Amy let their bags on the metal floor of our platform, sat down, and visibly began to relax. We didn't bother to post a sentry to watch the zombies since we didn't think any of them would grow a brain and figure out how to use a ladder and, with any luck, they might start to clear out after a while. If they didn't, we would have a serious problem on our paws. After John was satisfied that I wasn't injured in any way, he let me start to look through my bag and make sure I still had everything after our mad run through the streets.

After a while we decided to stop and consider our next move..."I think we need to just find somewhere in the area and lay low", Xander suggested. He had been pushing for this to be our plan for quite a while but we had always said that we should probably keep moving. This time, though, something made us stop and consider the idea for a while. John had several good reasons to stay in this area. "It's a city so there is more than one place to hide from zombies and if needed, we could probably build some sort of bridge across to another building as an emergency exit; also there's a store nearby that we could raid for food." He always had good judgment and I decided this was a good idea. Amy agreed with Xander and since John agreed with Xander and I agreed with John, we were in unanimous agreement. We would stay in the city and try to find a hideout. With this new goal in mind, we all stood up and decided to climb higher up the crane to get a better view of the city to see if we could get a better view. John helped me test my leg, which proved stable and with that, John volunteered to lead the way. I followed after with Amy and Xander following close behind.

The climb seemed a lot longer than it actually was and I felt like it could go on for hours. When we finally got to the top, it seemed like we had climbed about a mile. We turned and looked back at the city and looked for a bit before we all decided on an office building. We climbed back down the ladder to our platform where all of our stuff was and looked over the edge, hoping the zombies wouldn't be there. Thankfully, they weren't. I went first and climbed down the ladder. Once I got to the bottom I reached in my bag and pulled out my sword. It used to be my grandpa's, but he gave it to me when he died. I had been ready to sell it so it had been sitting in my car and I never got around to selling it. It was slim but razor sharp and it was one of those swords that are black with silver edges on the blade. As a bonus, I had a black belt in Tang-Soo-Do, which is a Korean martial art. In Tang-Soo-Do I was taught defense and use of a sword. Now the swords we used were different from the one I had, but I figured it couldn't be much different. As I waited at the bottom of the ladder for the rest, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye. I turned my head almost imperceptibly and saw a zombie Squirrel sprinting towards me with all the speed that squirrels possess. I reacted with almost uncanny reflexes and with a flick of my wrists, sent its head rolling across the ground as its body flew past me and hit a car just as the others got to the bottom of the ladder. We put our paws to our ears and ran as the car alarm pierced the silence and in the distance, we heard the scream of hundreds of zombies that filled the streets. "GO GO GO," I screamed at the rest as we hightailed it out of there. We had the luxury of running on the sidewalk this time around as we sprinted in the direction of our chosen safe house.

Our feet pounded the ground as we ran with relentless energy born out of fear of the zombies and what would happen if you couldn't keep going. Some sixth sense inside me told me we were almost there. Just as well too since the sun was about halfway gone from the sky, taking precious light with it. "Come on we're almost there!" Amy shouted to us. Fear or not, we were all beginning to get tired with all the running we had been doing that day. My hopes were confirmed when we finally saw the building we had selected and we all sprinted with renewed energy. I got to the door first and shoved the loose metal doors open. I ran inside and turned and didn't see John. "Where's John," I asked. Xander gave me a worried look and shrugged. At that moment I could hear gunfire and my eyes widened. I dropped my bag and bolted back out the door with nothing but my sword. I could see John a little ways down the sidewalk, on the ground with his foot twisted at an abnormal position and his assault rifle flashing. I ran towards him and wrapped one arm around his chest and picked him up and started dragging him back. "What are you doing?!? Don't try to help me or we'll both die!" He protested as I put on another burst of speed and gritted my teeth. "We are NOT going to die! You hear me? We are not going to die!" He just gave up trying because once I'm set on something; it's very difficult to sway me from it. I could see the tidal wave of zombies surging towards us but I never let go of John. Tears welled up in my eyes. I couldn't believe I was going to die here trying to save my lover! I began to think of what a failure I would look like, but I shook it off. I needed to stay focused for the moment.

This thought gave me determination and I dragged John as fast as I could down the sidewalk. Panic welled up in me more and more as the horde got closer. My biceps bulged as I put my sword in a discreet sheath built into the side of my jeans(by me), grabbed john with both paws, looked behind me to see how far we had to go, and saw that I wasn't being fast enough. An idea flashed through my head and I moved forward a bit, put my right arm under his legs, picked John up off the ground, turned, and ran. John was still firing at the zombies and reloading clip after clip until I wondered how many clips he had with him. I saw the door just ahead when Xander and Amy stepped out of the doorway and fired past me into the approaching zombies(I learned later they had been just inches away from me when they started shooting. I sprinted around the corner of the doorway and inside the building to put John safely on the floor and turned around just in time to see Xander and Amy close the doors and lock it with chains around the handles.
