The Adventures of Nall Wolf

Chapter 5: The Organization

The song "All or Nothing" by Theory of a Deadman was softly playing in the background as Nall woke up. He lay in bed for a while, dwelling on the past two days. He had somehow gained amazing speed and strength for seemingly no reason at all.

"Why me? Why now?" It's not like he was complaining, actually far from it. He had wished for change and now it's happening, but that still didn't help the confusion surrounding the sudden onset of these powers. He wanted to know where they came from, how he got them, and why. He slipped his shorts on as he got out of bed and went through his morning routine while thinking about it. It was around 11:30 AM when he decided that dwelling on it wouldn't give an answer.

"Might as well have some more fun." said Nall as he gathered up his walking outfit. He put it on along with the usual wristband and loaded his pockets with his phone and music player, then headed out the door.

"Steve, come in." said the voice from the two-way radio.

"Go ahead David." Steve said, as he looked toward Nall's house.

"Is everything in place?"

"Yes, the other agents you sent arrived early this morning and are in place. Do you really think he's going to join us willingly?"

"According to our information, he wants to change his life, we're giving him that chance."

"But he already has a change: his new powers. For all we know, that's enough for him."

"We'll find out soon enough. Have Huck confront him when he leaves the house."

"Why Huck? From what I've seen, Nall can't stand him."

"He's the only one of us that Nall knows, so he's more likely to listen. Also, Huck is the only field agent that doesn't have some sort of power, which makes him more expendable should something go wrong. Now hurry up and get things ready Steve, he'll be waking up soon."

"Alright, David, see you back at the facility... I hope."Steve muted the radio and pulled out his phone. He flipped through the names and dialed Huck's number.

_"Hey, what's up?"_Huck said in a drowsy voice.

"Get up and come out here, we need you to help out with recruiting Nall."Steve responded.

"Alright, Alright. What do ya need me for anyway? I thought my job was over?"

"The boss has decided you are going to be the one to confront Nall and explain things to him."

"...You've got to be fucking kidding me. I've basically been poking him with a stick the whole time I've been stationed here. That kid hates me, and now ya want me to tell him there's an organization for people that have powers like him, that I work for, that ordered me to watch him, and now wants him to join? Ya think that'd be believable coming from the person that pushes his buttons all the time?"

"It wasn't my decision, the boss gave me these orders to pass along to you. I had similar concerns, but he thinks this is the best course of action. We have tons of backup all around us if things go sour. Also, I want you to answer any question he may have, even if you think it will endanger yourself."

"Alright, give me some time to get ready. I hope ya still have my will on record..." The phone beeped to signal that Huck had ended the call.

Nall started walking down the road in front of his house only to be stopped by a familiar voice.

"Hey, where ya goin' Nall?" He turned around to see Huck walking up to him.

"Why do you want to know?" replied Nall.

"I need to talk to ya for a sec."

"About what, exactly?"

"I saw what ya was doin' yesteday, smashin' up all those trees and zippin' around." A smirk formed on Huck's muzzle as Nall's eyes went wide and his ears slammed against his head.

"You... you saw that?!?"

"Ya was making so much noise I'd be surprised if halfa' Furkins didn't notice! Those trees are loud when they're basically exploding, afta' all!" Huck was trying not to laugh.

"Yeah... I didn't think about that." Nall was starting to look worried.

"Ya don't have to worry, I'm not gonna tell on ya." Huck's face quickly changed to a serious look. "I do want to make ya an offer, though. Can we go inside?

They both made their way back to Nall's house and sat in the living room.

"What kind of offer?" Nall asked when he sat down.

"I s'pose you could call it a job offer. I work for a group simply known as "The Organization." They're made up of a few normal people and many who have gained powers like yourself. They do different jobs that require abilities, like protection and spying for example."

"How do I know you're not just trying to screw with me?"

"Ya can ask me anything you want 'bout the Org and I'll answer it."

"Alright then, where are they located?"

"The main facility is on an unnamed island off the coast of Australia. They also have other smaller facilities on most major continents, the one in the US is underground and located near Area 51."

"Area 51... Is "The Organization" aligned with the government?" Nall was getting curious and his ears finally perked back up.

"No, the Org is higher than the government. The Org could control the government if they wanted to, but they usually have bigger things to deal with."

"Bigger things? I wouldn't think protection and spying jobs would be bigger than ruling the world."

"Think about it like this: what if someone gains powers like ya have and decides to use them to rob a bank or go on a killing spree, or even worse, take over the world. The Org was created to stop things like that from happening."

"How do these powers come about, anyway?"

"Um... wouldn't ya rather ask something else?" Huck's ears went down this time.

"...You know something you're not telling me."

"Okay, okay, I'll tell ya. These powers are caused by some kind of mutation. Sometimes the mutation happens naturally at birth and the power surfaces later in life, and sometimes the mutation is... helped along."

"What do you mean "helped along"?"

"It's hard to find the natural ones unless they show themselves, and that usually involves one of the bad things I said earlier. So the Org needs to create these powers in the furs they want to recruit. They do that by injecting DNA altering stuff in their blood to force a mutation like the naturals have."

"I'm not a natural, am I?"

"No, I was the one ordered to inject ya. It happened that day ya blew yourself up and fell in the ditch."

"I didn't blow myself up, the boom just caught me off guard..." Nall gave Huck a glaring look. "Is there any side effects of getting these artificially created powers?"

"There's a small chance the stuff screws with your DNA too much and ya die, but that usually happens a few minutes after the injection, so you're safe. Sometimes it causes a hangover like effect the next day, but other than that any other side effects would be from the powers themselves."

"Side effects from the actual powers?"

"Yea, some furs can't control their powers and things happen that aren't supposed to. I heard of one that literally blew up a house and left a crater twice its size. 'Corse there wasn't much of him left to recruit after that..."

"Wow... So, why me? Why did I get these powers?"

"The Org has been watching you for a while now. The field agents have gotten pretty good at spotting furs with potential, and they thought you had a lot. It was decided that you should get them about a month ago and I was waiting for the right time."

"So this "Organization" wants me to work for them, so they gave me these powers... What if I don't want to work for them?"

"It's all up to you. I'm not gonna force ya to join and no one else will either. Consider the powers a gift, what ya do with them is up to you. But you should know, if ya cause too much trouble with 'em, the Org will hunt ya down like any other bad fur with powers."

"If I decide to join, what will happen?"

"First, we'll move ya in to the US facility, then train ya up, and send ya on some missions. You'll have to live in the facility 'till you're fully trained and reach a certain rank, then you'll be free to ask to be stationed somewhere else or stay in the facility. Ya can leave the facility and go out on the town as long as there's no meetings or training on that day and get back before midnight. You'll get payed plenty, even during training, and your family will also receive a decent amount every month."

"What if my family doesn't want me to do this sort of thing?"

"You're family doesn't need to know what you're doing. If ya join, someone will convince them that you got some crazy scholarship for some college in Nevada that pays them as well. If it comes down to it, we'll have one of our members modify their memories so they'll accept it as truth."

"I'm still not sure if I want to join or not... Can I have a day to think about it?"

"Of course Nall, ya know where to find me if ya need to talk some more." Huck looks over at the clock. "...It's already 3:30 PM?!? Man, I gotta get out of here before your parents get home. Think it over tonight and let me know what you decide." Huck got up and headed for the door. "See ya tomorrow, Nall!"

"Yea, see ya..." Nall muttered. He got up and padded off to his room with a lot to think about. The entire night was spent pondering the pros and cons of joining the Organization. The biggest pro that he could think of was how much it would change his life; his wish would finally be completely fulfilled. Soon, it was time for bed. Nall turned on his music, stripped down, and got into bed.
