Chapter Four: Disembark

Sain was driving a small sedan out into the countryside following Vance's directions from the back. They'd made it away from the hotel with the few items that Alyx and Sain had stashed there, Sain had then broke into a car and hotwired it and now here they were driving down the road in the Norwegian countryside. Alyx looked over at Vance studying his face. He looked older, his muzzle had some grey streak in it and his eyes had a slight cast to them. He sighed,

"So what do you think happened to Swanson?"

Vance shrugged,

"I don't know, but I'm sure wherever he is he's fine."

"Where are we headed?"

"A military base." Vance looked back at the two of them, "I suggest you disguise yourselves like Sain di-" He paused as both of them blurred for a second before they became humans both of them, "That's weird. How do you do that?"

Alyx made a face,

"We both have a rare disease that only the Western Points get. It's a genetic discrepancy that allows us to change our molecular structure at will, so we can change the way we look pretty easily."

Vance was silent for a moment,

"Gawd, the things you could do in bed with that." He laughed at Sain's surprised wark and Alyx's face at the comment, "Sorry, sorry. I couldn't help it!" He laughed harder, "Alyx you've turned so red you almost look normal." He turned his gaze back to Sain, "And Sain. Humans don't 'wark'. You may want to work on that." He grinned.

Alyx shook his head and looked back out the window.at the passing countryside.

"So what about Tatsukan?"

Vance sucked in a breath,

"Ahm... Mister Yui... I fired him as my seeker and last I heard he was in a gunfight with the local Norwegian police and military." The wolf shrugged, "Not my concern considering his ruining of my last year's Saint Patrick's day celebrations. I was shocked to find out who I'd hired after the fact." He turned around in his seat to look at Alyx, "It did find me you two though."

Alyx nodded slowly,

"It did." They were both silent for a moment before Alyx continued, "We're not coming back Vance."

The wolf threw his hand up,

"Not coming back? Of course you aren't coming back!" He pointed at Alyx, "Really after all the trouble you two have went through to keep your existence secret do you actually think I'd think you'd come back!?" Vance laughed, "Hell! I want out." He went silent, "But I'm getting out a little differently than you two did."

Alyx raised an eye ridge,

"Oh? How so?"

Vance shook his head and sat back down in his seat looking forward now,

"That's my business not yours."

Alyx grunted,

"If you say so. Just don't get yourself killed."

Vance's ear plastered themselves to his skull as they went back,

"Don't get yoursel- what the hell!?" He turned around again, "How can you of all people say that!?"

Alyx looked away from the wolf,

"You know what I mean."

Vance's eyes narrowed,

"No I don't. You made sure to kill yourself. At least in essence, everyone thinks you guys are dead! Hell, you two even still come up in random conversation sometimes. Rex literally cries at the mention of your names!"

Sain glanced over at Vance,

"He does?"

"Yes!" Vance spat the word out, "Do you know how pitiful it sounds when a full-grown dragon cries!?"

Alyx nodded,

"Quite well actually."

"Oh shut-up you!" Vance and Sain both shouted at him, making him chuckle.

Vance looked at the two of them,

"Ah, hell. Nevermind." He looked away and out the window with an unsatisfied face. "You two don't get it. Everything's a joke to you."

Alyx spoke up,

"No I get it, I really do. But we did what we had to."

Vance shook his head,

"I'm not arguing anymore on the subject."

Alyx sighed,

"Do you need us to come with you to the base?"

Vance was silent before he spoke slowly,

"No. I don't need you both at the base, I just figured you follow me here since your motel got blasted."

Alyx shrugged,

"We need to find a new place to stay, the base really won't work since we aren't military personnel."

Vance grumbled for a second,

"Fine, fine. I get it. Sain pull over would you?"

Sain complied and pulled the small sedan off to the shoulder of the road. Vance got out, and Alyx followed.

Vance poked Alyx in the chest,

"You tell me where you guys are when you find somewhere to stay. We can probably rid ourselves of Eli, pretty soon. Tatsukan was kind enough to tell me where his search starts, I'm sure between the three of us we can find the rest of the way to Eli."

Alyx nodded,

"We'll let you know."

"Make sure you do."

Sain got out of the vehicle.

"So who's taking the car?"

Vance raised a hand,

"I am, the city is much closer than the base, and you guys can just steal another for all I care."

Alyx nodded and saluted the wolf who looked at him for a moment before climbing into the car. He pulled back out onto the road and rumbled off into the distance slowly.

Sain waved.

"We're not really gonna tell him where we're staying are we?"

Alyx looked over at Sain,

"No, we're not. But we are going to meet him at the base as that's where Tatsukan would have started I'd wager." He was silent for a moment, "We might also want to find the twerp."

"You sure?" Sain looked surprised, "He's a criminal here."

Alyx shook his head.

"No I'm not sure, but if we cross paths with him, he's coming with us. We won't go out of our way though."

Sain shrugged,

"If you say so." She stretched and looked around, "Well, I've got our bag of stuff, now do you see a car to throw it all in?"

Alyx nodded to a barn across the road.

"I smell motor oil in there."

They both crossed the road and crept up to the barn listening for activity inside. They waited right outside the doors for a few minutes listening for any sounds. Slowly they slid the doors open and stepped inside the barn.

Sain stopped short and stared,

"A tank!?" She looked at Alyx, "You see it right?"

Alyx nodded,

"It's of G&W make... Old..." He paused, "Militia or Rebellion one." He stepped forward and ran a hand down the side of the tank. Overall it looked rather crude, but G&W knew how to build anything, it was never pretty but they held together and kept working, even after huge amounts of abuse. "We certainly can't use it."

"And why not?" Sain put her hands to her hips.

"It's a tank..." When Sain didn't make any indication she understood Alyx sighed and continued, "It's not very low profile."

"Oh... Right... I knew that..." Sain looked downcast and walked farther into the barn, "Hey! How about an old Jeep?"

Alyx walked after and saw behind the hummer sat an old WWII era Willy's,

"Willy's dear... I doubt it runs-" He trailed off as Sain found the keys still in the ignition and cranked it up.

"It's still not very low profile but it's better than a tank dear." Sain said as the old engine rumbled happily.

Alyx shrugged and threw their bag of stuff into the back before hopping in,

"Better than nothing. Let's go." He made a mental map as Sain pulled out of the barn and closed it. The tank might come in handy later on if they needed it for some bizarre reason.

He chirped in surprise as Sain gunned the vehicle and shot off down the road at an incredible pace considering the Willy's age.

Sain grinned rufishly,

"The American's knew how to build a four by four in the 1940's" She whooped as she pulled the car up on two wheels, "This definitely isn't original though, judging by how it performs."

Alyx sighed and held on as they roared off towards the city unaware they were being watched.

"Seriously? That's ridiculous! Four hundred per night!?" Alyx gesticulated at the motel owner, "That's thievery!"

The old raven shook it's head,

"No less, no more. Things is goin' to pieces her in the city and I don't want no riff-raff here, so either pay it or get out."

Alyx sighed and turned away from the raven and walked out of the building he shook his head at Sain's questioning look.

"We gotta keep looking."

Sain mumbled something about being horny and tired before they drove to the next hotel and Alyx got out to go find out a price. The hyena here was much friendlier than the last few owners and gave them a decent deal that Alyx took and after getting keys to their room thanked the hyena and walked back outside to Sain.

After a short climb and a brisk walk to the corner of the building they came to their room, Alyx opened the door with the keys and let Sain step inside before he followed her flipping the lights on as he came in.
