Immortal Chapter 1: Born Anew

It happened on a day like any other. Nothing special about today; it was as normal as any other. But where most stories start with a beginning. This one starts with an ending. Ambulances gathered around an intersection of a central Tokyo street. Two vehicles wrapped around each other in a mass of twisted metal. A crowd gathered around trying to get a glimpse past the police cars.

"Oh my head," A young boy grumbled to himself. His hand running through his spiky blue hair. "What did I hit?" He looked up seeing the cars and people rushing to pull the doors off. "Wait that's my car!" He screamed suddenly jumping to his feet and running forward. Everyone ignored him and continued working. "Hey didn't you hear me?" The boy stood next to a cop. "Please return to your business let us do our work!" The officer shouted to the crowd.

"God damit listen to me!" He swung his fist and his hand passed through the cop. He fell forward and landed hard on his face with a loud grunt. Looking up he could see the officers legs passed through his back to the ground. He nearly screamed and jumped up seeing them peel the door off his vehicle. His eyes became wide as he saw his own body laying in the seat. Blood running down his face, his chest moving very slightly showing he was barely alive. "But if I'm there then how am I?" he looked at his hands and heard a whimper behind him. Turning he saw another man this one much older his shirt unbuttoned and reeking of alcohol.

"Its you!" The boy yelled. "What the hell did you do to me!" He grabbed the mans collar. This man was driving the other car that had collided with his own. He was simply on his way to a friends house using his father car since it was a long walk. The man didn't answer and shook hard. "I'm dead...." The man gasped. Following his eyes he looked over seeing the other cars drivers seat covered in blood. A piece of steel through the mans body. His anger faded and he wanted to yell but that sight told him there was no use in it.

He released the man and they both looked up seeing a different person. He wore a completely black school uniform. It was just loose enough to be comfortable as he stood atop a light pole. His intense green eyes stared down as his fiery red hair lay tied back in a ponytail. "Hm wow took you to a long while to figure out what's going on; You dead heads usually catch on pretty quick, names Sayomi," He hopped down and landed softly on his feet smiling.

"Who you calling a dead head! Wait...you can see us?" The boy asked. "Of course I can, I'm a Watcher, Sector 2, Class B, I'm here to set you two up for the afterlife," He smiled and pulled a book from his pocket. "Lets see..." He began to switch through pages. "Is this guy for real," The boy muttered to himself and the man raised an eyebrow. "Ah here we are, Ishi Yanamoro, to die at 3:23 in car accident, yep and...." He switched a few pages. "Um...hm...Well kid, your not on my list," He scratched his head.

"So I'm not supposed to be dead? And just who are you callin kid your as old as I am!" He growled and the red head looked up. "Actually I'm three hundred and eighty seven years old, and this is odd, you shouldn't be out of your body for another sixty three years, What's you name anyway?" He raised an eyebrow. "My name is Katashi Makamura, I'm a freshman at Watanabe High School," He gripped his fist in anger. It was one thing to be dead but to be dead and have someone say their not supposed to be.

"Wow kid that's really sad, we have no record of you dieing today!" The red head laughed. "What you bastard! How can you laugh at this? Its not funny!" Katashi rushed forward and raised his hand to punch him. But with lighting speed Sayomi grabbed his hand. With one swift motion he lifted the boy up off the ground and behind him making him tumble into the light pole. "Hm nice try kid but you gotta get up pretty early to..." Sayomi was cut off by a right cross to the face. "Dam he's fast," Sayomi thought and landed a short distance away.

"I said its not funny," Katashi nearly growled and Sayomi smirked. "If I had the time I'd fight ya but I really don't," He suddenly stepped back and lowered to one knee. "Halo!" He yelled and a ring of light appeared around them. The light blindingly engulfed them and they appeared suddenly in a dense street full of normal looking people. The houses were early sixteenth century with little to no electricity running to them. The cobble stone street glowed from the sunshine beneath them and the clouds seemed much closer. "Where did you bring us?" Katashi snapped.

"Where else, this is Halo, The last little bit of Atlantis that still exists," He spoke and smirked as they walked past an over look. They were on a large floating ring of buildings with an ocean below. Several more rings stretched out before them gradually lowering with walkways and pipes connecting them. Large palaces and buildings covering each. Katashi watched as the clouds moved over the buildings before turning around. As he turned he the great temple of Halo. A grand building of gold and silver with lavish gardens around its base. Domed towers made up its bulk all surrounding a massive spire.

"Is that where we're going?" He asked and Sayomi looked back. "No that's the temple that's where all the Immortals meet up, you'll be lucky to see them," He picked his ear as they passed a large group of people. Each person wore the black pants but a different colored shirt. "So are you going to explain some of this? Immortals? Temple? Atlantis?" He yelled. "Why should I? You won't be hear long enough to remember any of it," Sayomi flung what he picked from his ear. Katashi growled louder and they came to large building. This large capital like building took up an entire fourth of the ring they stood upon. More shirts stepped in an out of building leading in countless numbers of souls.

Once they entered the calm exterior was subtle compared to the hundreds of people rushing about. All holding massive stacks of paper and rushing to different rooms. "So heaven is just a big bureaucracy?" He raised an eyebrow. "This isn't heaven its Purgatory, the closest place to the mortal realm and the immortal realms," Sayomi corrected him and lead him through the rushing groups of people. Katashi jerked and tried to keep out of the way. Sayomi simply ducked and moved slightly completely adjusted to the daily hustle. They continued down a long hallway and stopped at a large black door. "Who is it?" A voice rumbled from inside. "Sayomi, Sector 2, come to ask a question about a soul," He answered followed by a sudden click of the door unlocking. Sayomi pushed the door open and they entered a large court room. Katashis eyes went wide seeing the beast behind the large podium. A massive brown Jackal standing tall his hulking mass leaning over the podium. "Lord Anubis?" Sayomi kneeled and Katashi took a step back. "Yes?" The beast growled down them. "This human wasn't on our schedule, In fact he wasn't supposed to die today at all," Sayomi stood.

"Because he's not dead," He smiled and Sayomi gasped. "But sir! He's out of his body! A dead head is the only person that can do that!" He yelled and quickly covered his mouth. The Jackals eyes narrowed and he gulped. "Do not raise your voice to an Immortal lord like that again, Now...He's not dead he's in a rare state called Akishika, His heart beats but his soul is no longer attached, he's just the power to the empty shell he left behind," Anubis explained and wrote on a large scroll. "But if he's not dead them...I royal screwed up..." Sayomi gulped and Anubis laughed in his throat.

"You may leave," He spoke and Sayomi quickly left. "Now then what to do with you?" Anubis' eyes moved down to meet his. "So you're an Immortal huh? Do they all look like animals?" Katashi asked. "Yes they do, once you die you become part of the spiritual animal that follows you, Since you are not dead that has yet to happen, an immortal is born as the perfect mixture of animal and human," Anubis explained. "But that's beside the point, do you understand what's going on child?" He rebutted. "Not really," He gulped.

"Well allow me to explain, You are neither living or dead, yet you've been brought to the world of the souls, This is an absolute taboo, I must sentence you to one of two judgments, either you spend an eternity in hell in an eternal prison or...get permission from the Immortals Council to become a Watcher, then you can move between both worlds live your normal life and help us with a little work," Anubis leaned forward and smiled.

"Well I'm not ready for hell...So how would I go about coming before this council?" He asked. Anubis grabbed him suddenly whipping behind as quickly as a wisp of wind. With one quick movement Anubis shifted to a feral form of a Skeletal Jackal with Katashi on his back. He burst through the door and down the hall with amazing speed. People rushing and shifting to step out of his way. A few people falling back dropping their papers. The front doors burst open and Anubis leaped onto a nearby roof then to the grand staircase of the temple. Watchers in different colored shirts moved and dodged trying not to get in the way.

Anubis made on massive leap and suddenly landed on a large walkway leading to the central spire. In a flash of smoke Anibis shifted back to a kneeling down position. "You can get off now," Anubis growled with Katashi clinging to his back. "A little warning...please..." He slide off his back. Grabbing him by his collar Anubis carried him inside through the gold and silver halls. Past the large windows looking over of the city. Coming to a small access door Anubis opened it slowly. "The rest is on you kid," He pushed him in without any other coaching.

The small human gulped and his eyes moved around the dark room. Suddenly Sayomi appears next to him from the darkness. "Just keep your mouth shut, and don't say a word," Sayomi whispered and kneeled pulling Katashi down with him. Suddenly the dome opened showing its completely made of glass illuminating the great room. The walls covered white with small dragon like creatures flying about the room. Before them ten balconies resting around the room. Chains stretching from each balcony to the platform the two stood upon. Below them a never ending black pit.

"Good afternoon child," A voice spoke from one of the balconies. Katashi turned seeing a great white liger sitting upon a throne. Two massive dragon wings stretching out from his body. Hi mane composed of black and red strands. His two horn glittering in the light. All of his body thick with muscle as he bears his white overcoat and white shirt underneath. "I am Ligeron, Head Commander of the Watcher and lord over the immortal realm of heaven," The great beast smiled. "Well now isn't this interesting, such a small human coming before us," Katashi's attention was diverted to behind himself. A great black bull leaning back in his seat. His arm holding up his large muzzle as his great white horns face forward. A long rattle snake tail wrapped around his throne rattling softly. A slight belly sticking out from his chiseled features. A black coat and black shirt adorning him. "I am Andreas, Secondary Head Commander of the Watchers and lord over the immortal realm of hell," He smiled and Sayomi shook.

The other balconies where empty and only these two men sat on each side of them. "We are the ones who are deciding you fate today, I'm afraid the other Commanders are busy," Andreas spoke and his tail rattled louder. "What do you mean? our fate?" Katashi asked. "You see this platform? If they decide we aren't good enough or we're lieing they'll break the chains and we'll fall into Oblivion, If we enter Oblivion you might as well be dead cause we'll never escape it," Sayomi explained. They both began to explain their situation. Both parties listened and in their eyes they could see them judging their words. Katashi choose his words carefully sensing that both of them were very powerful.

As they finished both seats slowly moved back into the dark. Sayomi looked down ashamed on such a rookie mistake. Katashi looked at him and sighed wanting to tell him he's sorry. But he had nothing to be sorry about its was a mistake. Suddenly both shifted out of the darkness and appeared once again. "Our verdict young ones, Sayomi we understand your mistake and acknowledge it as mistake," Ligeron smiled and Sayomi fell to one knee relaxing. "And as for you," Andreas spoke in a low growl. Katashi looked up and clenched his fist. Was this his end.
