Chapter 2

Angels are the harbingers of death?!

I woke up in my room, panting heavily. I looked up at the head of my bed, checking the clock. "Its 7:30 already?! I'm going to be late for school!" I said aloud, rushing out of bed and getting dressed in a T-shirt and jeans. Running down the stairs and into my car, I noticed something was off, but I couldn't put my finger on what. Shrugging the feeling off, I quickly drove out of the garage, right past my step-fathers jeep.

I was about half way to school when I remembered that I had wrecked my car on Friday, so I was confused to how it had been repaired so fast. I tried to put it out of my mind as I continued on my way to school. I arrived at school at close to 8:40, and quickly parked my car in its spot. Running to the class I got in just before the bell rang, walked over to my desk, and sat down. Then I noticed something, the teacher wasn't in the class. Looking around I realized that all the students were missing as well.

I wanted to get up and find out what was going on, but I couldn't seem to get up. I just sat there and waited for the class to end. When the bell finally rang I went to my next class, only to find that it was the same thing. No students, no teacher. Now I was really confused, but I simply sat there. And for the rest of the school day the same thing kept happening. I would go to my next class, see nobody was there and sit down until the next bell.

When school ended, I got up and walked to my car, getting ready to go home. Everyone else's cars started to move and pull out, so I figured that everyone in my class was simply playing a prank on me. It wasn't until I drove by one of the cars and saw that it wasn't being driven by anyone when I started to panic. Except I couldn't, my body simply stayed calm and kept driving towards home.

When I drove past the school marquee, I noticed that it said 'Have a great weekend!' That meant it was Friday. I was freaking out because right after I noticed a silver ford crashed into the tree right outside the school grounds. That is what happened last Friday, the day I wrecked my car! If that was what it meant then I would swerve off the road to avoid something fast in a mere thirty minutes!

I tried to stop the car but I couldn't do anything, my body just simply kept driving. I felt like I was prisoner to my own body, just being forced to sit back and watch everything happen. And then it happened, the fast moving object darted across the road and cause my car to crash into a near-by light post to avoid it. It seemed to move slower this time though, and I caught a glimpse of something that looked like a person.

The rest of the day afterwards played out exactly as it did last Friday. I called my parents, got my car towed, picked up in my mom's van-which had no driver ether!-, and dropped off at my house where I proceeded to go upstairs to go to sleep.

When the alarm woke me up again, I looked at the clock. Same time as yesterday, and when I tried to stop myself from getting out of bed my body took over and started doing everything for me. I went through the day all over again, from going to school to the car crash, everything was the same. But every time I saw the streak it seemed to move slower and slower, until I could make out a small girl with golden hair. I had seen her somewhere before but couldn't put my finger on where.

This cycle repeated it's self sixteen times before finally when I went to sleep, I dreamed. I dreamed of getting a call from my mother, to go and pick up some things for a party. In my dream I went to the store and was pushed to the side by a girl. A girl with golden blond hair; and then it all came back to me, where I had seen her before, and the events of that day! I sat there and lived thought that day with the girl over from the super market to the road block; it all came back to me instantaneously. It wasn't until the jeep crash when it all slowed down and I started to feel everything all over again. I felt a feeling of dread as I followed the girl's foot prints, all the way up to the point of her stabbing me thought the heart.

I felt the pain of her stabbing me all over again, the feeling of my body hitting the ground. Claire; that was her name. "Claire." She had caused me to crash my car. "Claire!" She was the one who involved me in that firefight! "Claire!!!" She was the one who totaled my father's priceless jeep! "CLAIRE!!!!" She was the one who killed me!

And then I awoke, screaming her name. And then I realized; I woke up, that I wasn't dead. Highly confused I looked around my surroundings, seeing nothing but bare, white, walls. In fact the only thing in the room was the bed that I was laying in. I didn't believe I was alive, I had watched Claire kill me with my own two eyes, felt deaths embrace.

I looked down at my chest and then I noticed something. Well two things, one that I was naked underneath the sheet, and two a large, jagged scar where Claire had killed me. Looking at the scar told me that what she had done wasn't faked, or some illusion.

Claire. The very thought of her caused me to wonder what the hell she was. All the weird stuff she had done, steal my keys from my pocket, light a man on fire with a wave of her hand, and punch right through someone's chest cavity; It all seemed impossible! While silently questioning myself, a door on the adjacent wall opened up.

From the darkness a woman who looked exactly like Claire walked out of it. She looked older, maybe twenty or twenty two, and was wearing jeans and a white tank top. Still a little shocked I timidly asked, "Who are you. Where am I, and how am I alive?!" The woman just smirked and continued to walk towards me, a duffle bag in her right hand.

"You know who I am." She said in that same cold, mature voice that the little girl had. "Claire!" I said aloud, my surprise ringing in the name. I was about to ask her more questions but she simply raised a finger up to silence me.

"You asked me a few questions and I will answer them. You are currently in one of my many safe houses, located somewhere in the wilderness of Georgia. You are alive because I did not kill you, simply remade you." She said with almost a hint of boredom in her voice, as if she had practiced this speech.

"What do you mean, remade?" I asked out, unable to hold back my curiosity. Who was this person and how did she do all that crazy stuff.

"You will be filled in on the way; your five day slumber has put us behind schedule quite a ways." She said while throwing the duffle bag on top of me. "Get dressed; we have a ways to go."

As she walked out of the room, I couldn't help but be more confused than when she started. As I was trying to get out of bed I noticed something that I should have felt sooner, my ankle was cuffed to the bed post. Quickly checking the bag I found a key and some formal business wear. 'She honestly doesn't expect me to go out in this, does she?' I thought to myself, while using the key to release my leg from bondage.

After some time I walked out of the room in my new suit, it was a plain black suit-that somehow fit me perfectly- and looked around the hallway. There was only one door and that was mine. "Umm Claire?" I called out, trying to find where to go. I saw the wall at the end of the hall open up to a slightly larger room full of light, and walked towards it.

Stepping into the room I was instantly blinded by the amount of light inside. After my eyes adjusted for a while, and the first thing I noticed was a giant mirror that covered half the room. Looking into it I almost didn't recognize what I saw. My hair had grown much longer and even changed to a darker brown-black color. Also the scar above my left eye was gone, like I had never been cut by a bottle back when I was six. But the most shocking change was my eyes. They were now a crimson red, and shaped like a cat's.

"Just like Claire's." I exclaimed, forgetting what I was exposed to be doing. From behind me I could hear a snicker, and she walked out of the hall and into the room, as if she was waiting for me to pass by her. I turned to ask her some questions but she simply put her index finger to my lips and said,"You can ask me all you wish to know on the road."

I don't know why, but I simply did as I was told. She guided me towards a large door and out off a surrounding porch. I looked back at the building and it was a rather plain looking concrete building in the middle of the woods. Turning around I was a bit shocked to see a sizable greyhound bus. 'At least she wasn't going to be driving this time.' I thought in my head.

Every step felt weird to me, as if my entire body was heavier than before. Stepping onto the bus, I saw that the driver was a slim, dark haired man, with a usually pail complexion. I tried to make a smile towards him but my muscles simply didn't want to, so I held my hand out to him. He smiled and shook it saying," Hello there young man. M' names William J. Bryce. You can call me Bill. I will be the driver for this grand trip."

I shook his hand back and said, "Justin Scott, pleased to meet you." He just looked at me weird and commented, "Now this bus is no place for liars. Even if you have a reason to hide your identity, there's no point in stealing a dead kid's." I was about to tell him that I had no idea what he was talking about, but Claire simply pushed me down the aisle, saying, "I'm sorry Bill, I will try to talk some sense into him."

I wanted to turn around but Claire wouldn't let me, she just kept pushing me down the deserted bus until we reached the back, and sat down on the last bench. As soon as the vehicle started moving, a plexi-glass wall descended from the roof of the bus, shutting us off from the front. Looking at it I immediately understood its purpose, it was sound proof. Turning to face Claire (only to see that she was already staring at me) I asked, "What was that man talking about. What did he mean 'a dead kid's name?!"

She simply looked at me and said, "You died back in Florida. It was in the news 'Teen driver dies in wreak'. It even made television, which is quite impressive." I sat there wide eyed, until I gathered enough thoughts to say, "But I didn't die in a crash, you abducted me!"Claire sat still and nodded. "That is true but your government covered it all up. To your family and friends they have already buried you, thus you are now dead."

"Well then I need to contact them, go home and show them I'm alive, or something!" I exclaimed with vigor. I couldn't let everyone I knew simply think I was dead. But Claire simply nodded her head at me, and said, "Ok you can go back if you can tell me your parents' names." That was an easy one! Their names were.....My face screwed up as I couldn't remember their names. All I could remember were blanks; I was so close to them but every time the names avoided me.

After I sat there for a while I had to admit, "I can't remember. Not even their faces come to mind. What did you do to me!?"With that last bit almost being yelled at her. She simply smiled and said in that soothing voice of hers', "Before I get to that, I suppose I should start with the question you wanted to ask earlier; about what I am." It didn't answer my question, but I was at the point where any information helped.

"To say that we are not human would be an understatement," She started up. "We, Me and my brethren, arrived on this world two thousand years ago. We were all born for a single purpose, and could do things that normal humans could not. At the time we did not even know what we were so we simply went by the name that everyone around us said. Angels they said; descended directly from heaven they said. We stuck with the name because it was rather ironic, due to the purpose we all felt."

"What was so ironic about it?" I asked, my unbound curiosity getting the better of me. I was skeptical myself, but I felt it was better to not contradict her; my chest aching even as I thought about it.

"It was ironic because our purpose, it is to kill humans. Or more precisely limit their numbers on this earth. We all felt that if we killed all of the humans then there would be none left, and we would be without purpose." She stated grimly, though I swear I shall a glitter of happiness as she said it.

I simply gawked as I was told that this person had lived for that many years, and her goal in life was to kill people. "If your reason for being is to kill people...then why am I still alive?" I questioned, puzzled almost more than before she told me all this.

"I will answer all of your questions when the time comes, for now I am going to answer the question of what I did to you." Her voice slicing right thought the air with a tone of authority. "I did not kill you simply because I wanted you. Here is a better explanation to help you differentiate humans from my kind. Many people say that humans were born with a hole in their hearts. That hole ached and craved for something it could never have, and as thus humans strive to fill it. Do you know what is missing from humans?"

I nodded no, but I figured whether I knew or not she was going to tell me. My guess was right on the money as she started back up again, "What humans lacked was purpose. All humans are born without a purpose, without something they are destined to do. True humans accomplish much, but after they achieve what do they do? They simply try to find something else to make them content. This is what sets us apart from them."

I tried to act as if I understood how this correlated to what happened to me, but she could tell I had no clue. She hung her head in a disappointed sort of way and said, "This story has to do with you in the very way I created you. You had a hole in your heart and I filled it, both metaphorically and physically. I gave you a purpose, and that is to protect me."

I was still kind of lost but when she dumbed it down I let out an 'oooohhhh' of understanding. Then I said something I probably shouldn't have. "So you are saying that I am like you, an Angel?" Something about that must have shaken her, for she simply sat there, quite for the longest time. And then out of nowhere she started to giggle. And then laugh, her body shaking harder and harder as she found it more and more amusing. I went red faced as she was rolling all over the seat in a fit of laughter.

Finally when she had gathered her wits again she explained," No...no, you're not an Angel. You are what we call a Guardian, something half way between its former species and our own. You are far from being like me, but still way above humans." And with that she got up walked over to me and drew me in close, kissing me right on the cheek. After a few seconds she drew back, saying, "You are my Guardian. Now get some sleep, we have a long day ahead of us."

I had never been more confused in my life, but looking outside I noticed that the sky had turned dark. I hadn't even notice the time passing as we talked. I looked around for somewhere to sleep when Claire walked over to the wall and pressed a button, causing the seats to retract and two large beds to rise from the floor. Walking over to the larger of the two, I flopped down onto it, looking up at the ceiling. And for the first time, I felt like there was nowhere else I would rather be.
