The Argent Guardian

Chapter 1

I meet an angel in a super-market.

This is a tale of my decent into darkness. How my life was stripped from me and thrown down a path I didn't even know existed. I will warn you now; my tale isn't for the faint of heart, or those with week stomachs.

Before I start my tale I should probably tell you a little about myself, before it all started. My name was Justin Scott, 18 year old senior in high school. I didn't have a job, or a girlfriend, or any real purpose. I came from a mid-class family from south Florida, lived in a small town. That's all even I can remember about myself. It's been far too long for all the details to be correct. There, now you are all caught up.

It was a relatively normal Saturday, the weather was overcast, but that was normal for the springs where I lived. It was also hot, it was always hot. It was about 3:00 when my cell rang, checking it I saw that it was my mother. So I let the call go to voice mail. After about five minutes I checked the message, and it was something about her needing me to go to the store and pick up some food for a surprise party she was throwing.

"You're kidding me, right?" I said aloud, to nobody in particular. "She is in town and she wants me to do her shopping?"

Yeah I was a little mad, but if I ignored it and stayed in the house all day doing nothing, then she would be more than a little mad. Hopping up from the couch, I walked down the hall towards my garage, where my dad's custom built jeep lay underneath a layer of blankets for protection from the "outside elements". 'He's going to kill me if he finds out about this.' I thought to myself, while taking the "false sense of security" off of the vehicle. Not like I had a choice, my car was in the shop. Thinking back on it, it was not the best choice of the day.

I drove to the nearest Publix, located in the next town over. Arriving there, I opened the phone and listened to the stuff she needed me to pick up. "Apples, crackers, pie, cupcakes......Couldn't she have just gotten it all this morning?" I said loudly to myself in the jeep. Jumping out of it, I walked towards the store, but stopped, seeing a strange pair of black suited men scanning around the parking lot. You know the kind that you always see in spy movies. Ignoring them I walked into Publix, list in hand, and walked into the aisles to find the supplies.

As I turned the corner into the baked goods aisle, I was suddenly pushed to the side by a small girl with long golden blond hair, and a floral dress. I watched her run up the aisle, sprinting ahead with impressive speed; she turned her head back at me. The first thing I noticed was her golden topaz colored eyes, with irises the shape of a cat. I blinked my eyes sure that I had seen that wrong, as she dashed behind the next aisle.

I didn't get much time to think about it, because not fifteen seconds later, I was pushed to the side by one of those black suited men. Looking up off the ground, ready to yell at them, but they were already running off. Noticing that they seemed to be going in the same direction as the little girl, a confused look crossed my face. 'Maybe she is their daughter?' I thought to myself, as I shook my head. It wasn't any of my business.

I tried my best to continue with my shopping, but I couldn't get that girl's eyes out of my head. Having picked up everything on my list I started walking back down the fruits section towards the register. As I walked out of the aisle I was pushed down yet again. Now I was mad, twice in one day, let alone the same place.

"Is there nobody who watches where they are going these days?!" I yelled aloud, and turned over to yell at the person who did it even more; when I saw that it was the young girl. An embarrassed look crossed over my face as I started to apologize to the girl. But before I could say anything the two men came out of the same aisle as the little girl. When the girl quickly got up and hid behind me I stood up and looked at the men.

"Stand aside boy!" Said the first one in a booming voice, who had pale skin like he rarely got any sun. When I just stood there, still quite confused, He yelled again for me to move. That's when I got angry.

"No one yells at me." I responded to them. Looking back at the girl I said to the men, "It's obvious that she doesn't want to be with you! I don't know what is going on but it's not polite to chase little girls!" If only I had looked back again, I would have seen that little girls' dark toothy smile.

Out from behind me I heard in a soothing mature voice, "I have a hostage! Make any moves and I kill him!" I looked back to see who said that but I couldn't find anyone else behind me, just that little girl. I was going to ask her if that was her voice but all I got out was an intelligent, "Waa...." Before the other man pulled out a pistol and yelled aloud, "Shoot him!"

The other man also pulled out a gun, and I instinctively grabbed the girl and leaped behind the next aisle, just as they started to open fire. "What the hell is going on!?" I said aloud in shock. Looking over to the little girl I noticed that she was running down the aisle, and without thinking I followed her. She looked back at me and smiled, running straight towards the parking lot, more importantly my dad's jeep. She hopped in to the driver's seat and pulled out the keys. 'Wait a second?!' I thought as I checked my pockets and they were gone.

Jumping into the passenger's seat at the last second before she pulled off, I heard the sound of gunfire, and felt a burning sensation in my arm. Looking down at it I noticed that I had been grazed by a bullet. When I started hearing clangs behind me I saw that they were shooting my dad's jeep. I silently cried to myself as I was thinking how I would explain this to my parents, as I was driven to some unknown place by this strange girl. Thinking back I would have been better off if I had been shot back there.

As the jeep screamed down the road, the sound of the brakes being abused by the strain of high speed turning, snapped me back into reality. I looked over at the little girl who had just hi-jacked my dad's "baby". The first thing that jumped into my mind, I said out loud.

"What do you think you're doing? The speed limit is 50!" I admit, a better choice of words could have been used, but I was still in shock. I started to feel a dull throb in my right arm, and looking over at it I realized that I had been grazed by a bullet.

Glancing back at the girl I said," Pull over!!!!" She didn't respond for a little while, but when she did it sliced thought the air like a knife. "I can't. Need to put as much distance between us and them as possible." She said in that soothing, mature sounding voice, that didn't match her body at all. Just thinking about the mismatch reminded me that a little girl was driving my father's jeep.

Speaking up I said aloud in a cocky sarcastic tone, "Little girls don't drive." She simply looked back at my with those strange eyes, that seemed to pierce into my soul itself. She said aloud, "And men don't cower behind shelves, and let strangers steal their car."

I simply sat there red faced for quite some time, thinking of some comment I could say back to her. I had finally thought of something to say, but before I could open my mouth she pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, looked at me, and said. "What do they call you?" her voice echoing in my ear.

Glancing around to make sure she was talking to me I shyly spoke up, "Justin...Call me Justin."

She just stared at me, for almost five minutes before she spoke again. "Well then Justin, this is your stop." I just blinked dumbly, not comprehending what I was hearing.

"What do you mean, this is my ride! If anyone is getting out then it should be you! I am not going anywhere." I said when I had gathered up the courage. 'The absolute gall of this girl!' I thought to myself.

She actually started me when she started to speak again, saying, "I take it you're not going to get out then. So be it." She then punched on the gas and took off on the road.

After about an hour I asked this enigma of a person, "Who are you anyways?" Either she didn't hear me or I was ignored, for she simply kept driving. Looking at the road ahead, I noticed several large trucks blocking the road.

"Damn they set up a road block...What are we going to do now?" I said, stating the obvious.

"Claire."

"Huh?" I said curiously as she started to speak again.

"Claire. Call me Claire." She repeated.

"Claire? Okay then, well Claire what are we going to do about this?" I questioned absently, pointing to the road block. She simply smirked and raised her left arm. In the same moment, one of the police officers at the road block simultaneously ignited in a green fire. Jumping in my seat as a man just randomly combusted, and apparently the other police officers were equally surprised!

"What jus....." I never got to finish that sentence, for at the time when everyone was distracted she pulled off the road, into an un-developed forested area. I had to fight the urge to let out a scream as she weaved in and out of the surrounding pine trees.

About fifteen minutes later, we came to an abrupt stop courtesy of a rather large oak tree- somewhere in the middle of the forest. As the airbags deflated, I looked around to see that Claire was already gone. Unbuckling my seat belt, my arm started to hurt again. Shrugging off the pain I hopped out of the jeep, going to the front of it to see the damage. The entire front was caved inwards, every inch of it screaming at me with thoughts of what my dad would say, or better do to me.

"Claire?" I cried out quite loudly, trying to find where she had gone. Hearing the faint sounds of breathing behind me, I wheeled around to see nothing there but foot prints leading off deeper into the forest. I didn't know why, but I actually felt worried for her.

After walking into the dead of night I finally saw a small campfire, with Claire sitting right next to it. She was looking directly in my direction with those mysterious and haunting eyes.

"Persistent, aren't you?" She spoke to me. "Perhaps I did make the correct choice in a Guardian." Her words confused me, 'Guardian, what the hell does she mean by that?'I thought to myself. She then stood up and began slowly walking towards me, as if she were a cat, stalking its prey.

"What are you doing? And what was all that with the road block back there?" I asked, confused and a little scared. She just kept walking towards me until she was right next to me, reaching an arm up at me, sliding it down my cheek.

"You belong to me now." She said in a strangely soothing tone as she slowly guided me lower to the ground. It was as if I was hypnotized by those eyes of hers. Sliding her hand down my chest she said," Don't worry, it will only hurt for a little bit." Before I could ask her what she meant, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. Slowly looking downwards, I noticed that her hand was no longer on my chest, but rather in it, right where my heart would be.

My mind was still confused and all I could say was,"That doesn't look right." And then everything got cold, I could feel myself falling backwards and hitting the ground with a thud. One of the last things I saw before my vision blurred out completely was those amber eyes, shining as if they where glowing, and a sharp toothed grin. And then I died.
