It was always a hassle for Alex to make his way through the security checkpoint. Shi had hoped that the research facility shi had found hirself in would have done something about the security guards by now, but that was so far down on anyone else's priority list that shi doubted it would ever happen. "Hey guys, you think Alex needs a pat down before we let him through," asked an ursine security guard named Paul.

"Don't think so, pretty obvious he isn't packing anything anywhere on him, especially in his pants," said another one of the security guards, a jackal named Ted. That got a laugh out of all the other guards present. For Alex this was the third time shi had heard that joke that month alone. Shi was surprised that the guards could still laugh at the same jokes over and over again. There were numerous sarcastic and scathing retorts that came to mind that shi could have used, but shi found letting them have their fun saved time in the end. They got bored faster that way and then shi would just be on hir way. All shi had to endure was a couple of minutes of their inane jokes when shi stayed quiet. One day when shi actually had decided to verbally spar with them it had taken half an hour for hir to make it through the checkpoint.

This time happened to be an especially short holdup, with the guards getting bored after not even a minute. They did still monitor Alex's activities, but the people monitoring hir did not fully understand what shi was doing most of the time and shi was fully aware of that. That was why shi had felt free to do some extra research on a new substance that had been brought to hir facility for study. Just about all of the research personnel had been pulled from their other projects to study the substance. There had not been much hope for the stuff at first, but it had been a curiosity. The substance, currently being called Substance 54931-YX-49 or just YX-49 for short, had been discovered by some oil drilling platform off the coast and sent to Alex's company to see if there was anything useful YX-49 could be used for.

It was not long before it was discovered that YX-49 made for one truly miraculous fertilizer. Sprinkle just a little bit of it on some plants and you end up with plants nearly triple their normal size overnight. After studying those plants for health risks it was also discovered that their nutritional value had actually quintupled. It was all quite amazing really. Alex had contributed to the discoveries by mixing YX-49 with other chemicals to produce a brew that made the plants virtually invulnerable to pest species. That ended up getting everyone working on all sorts of chemical cocktails that produced varying results.

What most of the other personnel did not realize was that Alex was holding back some of hir best discoveries. It was not that Alex had any big problems with hir employer, but some of the possibilities that YX-49 had were just too good to share in hir opinion. There was the chance that some of the other personnel had stumbled onto the same things shi had, but shi doubted it. While shi did think shi worked with other very intelligent people, shi was fairly certain shi was on a different level entirely. They could come up with some good uses for YX-49, but it was Alex that was coming up with the true miracles.

Alex had also planned on keeping hir best ideas to hirself. Of course, a lot of things shi did were saved onto various areas within the company's network. Even the research in hir private lab was required to be copied to multiple backup sites once a week. Alex was certain shi would be able to handle that problem when the time came though. The laptop that shi was carrying in to work that shi nor nobody else was supposed to, but everybody did anyways, was loaded full of goodies that would be able to get rid of all hir research in the company's data storage sites whenever shi wanted to. Whenever shi wanted to happened to be today.

A good deal of research and testing was near completion. Alex had just put the finishing touches on what shi thought of as a revolutionary chemical cocktail the previous night. All shi had to do was let it set overnight and administer it to hirself this morning and then that would be it. There was the possibility that all hir calculations and research could still be wrong, though. It was not like shi had been able to test out hir creation on anyone else. But, Alex was confident in hir creation. Things would definitely work out.

Alex felt like shi should have been nervous or anxious about what shi was about to do. This was hir day and if anyone found out about what shi was doing shi was certain they would try to stop hir. But, the day was going so normally that Alex was not feeling any of the nervousness or anxiety shi had expected. If anything, shi felt more calm than shi had ever felt before. Shi slipped into hir lab without interruption and made hir way over to hir chemical cocktail, which shi had recorded as YX-49-GH for filing purposes. It did not really need a name since this was the only batch of the stuff that Alex intended to ever be made.

Alex picked up the beaker of slightly purplish green liquid shi had left in a cooler the other night and prepared to drink it. Shi had a feeling that shi had forgotten something as shi brought the beaker up to hir mouth. It did not feel like anything important, but shi did wonder if shi should drink hir creation until shi figured out what it was. Then shi decided against waiting. Alex did not want to take the chance that someone might just figure out what shi was doing in the time it took hir to figure out what shi had forgotten. After that it was just a matter of feigning illness and going home early for the day. That meant one more pass through security, but Alex was certain it would be hir last trip through there ever again.

As expected, the trip back through security was as much of an annoyance as it always was. This time they talked to hir like shi was a sick child when they found out why Alex was heading home. It was condescending and about as humiliating as shi would have expected out of them, but shi let it pass like shi always did. While Alex was certain that what YX-49-GH had done to hir would have shut them up awfully quickly, shi did not want to test it out here. If shi was wrong about something shi wanted to be in a place where there would not be any real consequences rather than in a place where shi could be apprehended by a bunch of security guards. Instead, shi just walked away once the guards were done with hir and tried not to pay much attention to how they snickered about hir being a pansy for leaving because of feeling a little sick.

After that, getting out of hir company parking lot was not a problem at all. Alex did not head home though. It would only be but so long before someone figured out what shi had done. While Alex was confident that what shi had done to hirself would protect hir from any serious repercussions, there was always the chance that shi was mistaken and shi did not want to have to find out shi was wrong when being confronted by the authorities. Alex planned to do hir testing in a nice safe place in the countryside where it would hopefully take some time for anyone to find hir.

Everything that Alex needed was already packed in hir car. So, shi was able to proceed straight to a train station for a trip cross country where shi would be able to see if hir work had been a success in peace. Things seemed to be going very smoothly as the train arrived almost exactly on time. There were also a few TVs playing the news at the station and Alex was pleased to see that nothing had been mentioned about hir yet. Everything was going so smoothly that things were actually starting to get a little bit boring in Alex's opinion. That boredom led hir to decide to slightly alter hir plans. While Alex had not originally planned on doing any testing until shi was alone in the countryside to avoid getting noticed by anyone on the train, shi supposed that it could not hurt to find an isolated place on the train to do at least a little experimentation.

Finding one of those isolated places was not all difficult either. The restrooms on the train could be easily locked and people probably would not care what shi was doing in there. With things like that going on, Alex knew nobody would be paying attention to hir being quiet in some other restroom. Alex looked back in the direction where the guards had left the car and, seeing no sign of them returning, headed out of the car in the opposite direction that they had departed. That proved to be a mistake very quickly as Alex heard someone cough right next to hir to get hir attention the moment shi stepped into the next car. Alex looked to hir left and saw that one of the guards was standing right beside hir. Shi cursed silently to hirself as shi realized that they must have posted a lookout in case shi got past the other group.

"Do us both a favor and don't make a scene Alex," said the guard. It was Ted the jackal. He was not exactly the largest guard of the group, but he was still larger than Alex even with hir growth. For a brief moment Alex thought shi noticed a bit of surprise cross Ted's face as he looked hir up and down, but he quickly got over that surprise. That was a good thing as far as Alex was concerned. He had noticed hir growth, but Alex knew that his mind was refusing to believe what his eyes had told him. That was about the only good thing about this situation though. Alex did think about disobeying Ted and causing a scene, but that probably would not have done much good. Even if shi screamed out for help most people were less than likely to interfere with someone in a security uniform apprehending one little cat. The other guards were probably close by and ready to help too. Alex decided to cooperate with Ted, for now at least.

Ted radioed for his friends like Alex thought he would before he continued talking to hir, "Why don't you come with me so that we can talk more privately?"

"Lead the way Ted," Alex responded nonchalantly. Ted snorted and gave Alex a little shove to get hir moving. Shi thought that was a little unnecessary since shi was cooperating, but shi did not comment on it. Ted did seem a little angry at the moment and he could do something unwise if provoked. The two of them did get a few looks as they marched through the train, but most people just went right back to their own business as soon as they passed. Alex did wonder just where shi was being taken until they finally arrived in a baggage train. It was completely deserted and it was there that Ted made them wait until the rest of his friends arrived.

As soon as all the other guards filled into the car and made sure no one else was coming in, Paul spoke up and said, "You really tried to make fools out of us, didn't you shrimp?" The bear chose to punctuate his point by giving Alex a strong poke to the chest. Most of the other guards were staring daggers at Alex. They were definitely angry and having so many of them around did make hir a little nervous, especially since shi had yet to prove whether hir experimentations were a complete success.

Alex tried to bite back any sarcastic responses to Paul's question and instead asked, "Why, whatever could you be talking about Paul?"

"Don't play games with us," Paul yelled, "You screwed something up back at the company and then walked right out past us."

Ted then chimed in, "What, are you trying to make us lose our jobs just because you can't take a little joking around?"

What they were saying started to make Alex feel a little suspicious. It seemed like they were more scared of looking like fools and being out of their jobs than apprehending someone that had just made off with some top secret research. Instead of responding to what they had said, Alex asked, "Did the company even send you guys out here or did you come out on your own?"

"Of course we're out here on our own. The second we heard what was going on we knew we had to get to you to make up for letting you just walk out of the building. It was just a good thing Ted happened to be headed in the same direction you were for his lunch break or we really would have been sunk," Paul said.

Alex nearly laughed. These guards probably had no idea what shi had been researching and they probably had not even told anyone else where they were. They were completely unprepared to deal with hir properly. Hir company really needed to pick a better group to handle security, Alex mused to hirself. Still, even if they were not the smartest group around, there were still a few of them and only one Alex. It did not help that each of them still happened to be carrying their weapons and shi really wished those had been confiscated before they got on the train. Under normal circumstances shi would not have been able to get out of this situation. It looked like shi was going to have to test out whether YX-49-GH truly lived up to hir expectations.

"So, what do you plan to do with me? It's going to be a while before this train stops somewhere," Alex said. While shi was talking shi also started to focus on growing again. Shi took things slowly, trying to get in as much growth as shi could before any of the guards noticed. It was a little amusing for Alex as shi observed the looks on the guards faces as they wondered if shi was growing. Alex was also finding that the process of growing was fairly enjoyable. There was just a certain sense of confidence and power that came with even a little increase in size. "Don't think we won't hesitate to rough you up a bit if we have to Alex," Ted chimed in menacingly.

"Then I guess I have no choice but to go along," Alex said with mock sincerity.

"You had best," Paul said and was about to give Alex a little shove to prove his point when he hesitated. He was staring at Alex's chest and he was staring hard. That was going to be the real test for hir.
