Prologue: The Race.

"Welcome everyone to the first annual 20k mountain bike race..." The voice on the loud speaker said.

"Dude!! You with me?" Said Timothy my friend and coach as he yanked on the chin strap of my helmet.

"Yeah! I'm with you." Said Alex as he glanced around at the other 50 something racers lining up for the start.

"Listen to me, less than half these riders will make it to the finish. Except a few other locals here, none never have been anywhere near these trails. Thats your advantage, and even the locals have no clue about some of these trails, like we do.

"I know, we've been over this all morning since breakfast. Now come on and get off the starting grid before you get ran over by me." Alex said clapping Timothy on the shoulder.

"Ok, see you at check point one in about an hour then." Said Timothy as he turned and walked off the starting line.

Thumbs up in the air to Timothy as he walked away. Alex makes one last visual check of his bike.

"Gears set to 15? hum, check. Tires full of air? Check. Breaks working? (pulls the break handles) Check. Chain on? Check. Water bottles, air pump and tool bag? Check. Well now if we can get this race started." Thought Alex to himself as he looked at the dozen or so riders near him. Some with sponsor patches on their riding suits, others in nothing more than t-shirts and shorts with all the usual protective gear on.

The starting grid slowly started to clear of non riders as start time approached, family members, coach's and sponsors left their riders to wait in the final moments before the start of the race alone.

"Damn, I hate this waiting for the start." Thought Alex himself.

The tension in the air started to build as the event announcer climbed up on the small stage next to the starting line. Everyone of the racers watched as he lifted the starting gun in the air. Tensions built as racers started lunging against the starting gate hopping for that extra second or two when the gate dropped.

Alex like all the dozen or so on the gate pushed his front wheel against it, wanting to be the first across the starting line.

A lifetime seemed to pass before the loud retort of the starting pistol sounded and the gate fell away under the wheels of the racers bikes.

As the front line of racers surged across the gate the crowd cheered.

Alex's pushed for all he was worth trying to get out in front of the other racers, he bared down hard on the pedals going for speed. Hitting the thumb lever the bike changes gears as he passes one racer and then another as he powers down the first section of trail.

"I have to get out in front, otherwise passing them later on is going to get harder." Thought Alex to himself as his iphone changed songs.

An hour passes as the racers start to thin out, the mountain trails taking its toll on bikes and riders alike.

Check point 1 or the half way point on the race.

"Alex! Over here." Shouts Timothy as Alex crosses the half way line, waving him over.

Alex hits the breaks and pulls to a stop by Timothy.

"How you doing?" Timothy asks as he hands Alex a water bottle.

"How do you think? Replies Alex before squirting the water into his mouth and the last of it over his head. As Timothy replaces the other two empty bottles attached to the frame of the bike.

"Your third, and about five minutes behind Sanders." Said Timothy not looking up as he checked the tire pressure on the front tire.

"Who's in first? And the back tire is low." Asked Alex before Timothy could check the back tire.

"McBride is, who'd you think?" Answered Timothy as he quickly attached the portable air tank to the back tire and put ten pounds in it.

"Fuck! She was behind me at the start. How'd she get out in front of me?" Asked Alex as Timothy removed the air line from the back tire.

"She went down the gorge path, how else. You know, the one I told you to take. Now all is not lost young grasshopper, take Shoehorn pass, it's the only way to catch her." Replied Timothy as he patted Alex on the back.

Alex nods and smiles at Timothy .

"Shoehorn pass it is then, see you at the finish line." Said Alex as he put his foot on one pedal and shoved off with the other hitting the trail again.

Half an hour later, Alex turns off onto the Shoehorn pass trail and changes gears again. Caution to the wind Alex presses on as he passes a sign warning that the pass is closed due to rock slides this year.

"Damn! I'm just going to have to chance it. I need this win, or it's all over for my racing career." Thinks Alex as he pushes on into the pass.

Minutes pass as the trail becomes non-existent and Alex finds himself riding over a fresh rock slide. Turning around one of the many switchbacks in the trail Alex hits the breaks a second to late as the trail disappears in front of him.

"Wholly Shit!" Is all Alex can get out as his momentum carries him and his bike over the edge and down the rock slide.

A very rough twenty feet down, unable to turn Alex's front tire hits a boulder and he goes flying over the handle bars. As he flies over the handle bars his left foot catches on the bar and a sickening crack is heard as bones break. The last thing Alex sees is the ground rushing at him before the force of the impact knocks him out.

Later...

Pain, brings him awake as a needle is removed from his arm. Many hands slowly roll him over into a stretcher. The sound of a helicopter and bright lights blinded him as he tries to look up.

"Don't worry son, we've found you and going to get you some medical care." A male voice says to his right.

"We got one male approximately 16 years of age, multiple contusions and lacerations with possible broken bones. Vitals are stable, and en route." Said a voice on a radio near by.

"What happened?" Alex tries to ask but can't as the medicine takes effect and his eyes close as the feeling of weightlessness hits him.

Chapter 1: Transition

Then in the hospital.

"Doctor Reynolds, he's coming around." A female voice to his left said.

"Just like I thought he would. Thank you nurse Jones, I'll take it from here." Said Doctor Reynolds from the right side of him.

"Where?" Is all Alex could ask with his extreme dry mouth.

"He can talk?!" Said nurse Jones with no small amount of surprise in her voice.

"Your at Dry Gulch Rehabilitation Clinic, My private practice, where you've been for quite awhile now. My name is Dr. Reynolds and don't bother opening your eyes, there bandaged for now. Nurse Jones get mister Davenport some water." Said Doctor Reynolds.

Seconds later.

"Here you go mister Davenport." Said nurse Jones as a straw was placed to his lips.

"Just sip it for now, you've been out for almost a week." Said Doctor Reynolds.

"Why are my eyes bandaged? Oh and that's a stupid question nurse, of course I can talk! Don't be so surprised, it's called communication, every body does it. And what I'm doing is called sarcasm, don't tell me you've never heard of that either." Asked Alex worried and shocked as he was trying to assimilate the fact that he's been out for almost a week. Annoyance was clear in his tone at the nurse that had seemed so shocked that he could talk.

"Nurse Jones, stop antagonizing my patient. Your dismissed. Go attend to your other duties." Dr. Reynolds said with a growl in his voice that sounded like a wolf's snarl. The Doctor waited until the nurse left before continuing.

"When you were found, the rescue team found you face down in a rock slide. It's not just your eyes that's bandaged, it's your entire face as well. You had multiple lacerations most of them severe enough to require surgery. Your left foot was broken and required re-constructive surgery due to it being crushed by a large rock apparently after you blacked out the first time, but its in a hard cast and healing satisfactorily. I'm happy to say that you will still have use of it and will be able to walk, but with some difficultly. There was some nerve damage caused by the rock. But I happen to know of a medicine that could help heal that, but it's just been released for use on humans and is highly experimental." replied Dr Reynolds honestly but not harshly or unkind.

"Ok, I'll try it. I thought it was the pain meds that was keeping me from feeling my foot. But if you think if will work, I'll be willing to try it. So when will these bandages come off? And how bad will the scars be?"Queried Alex concerned.

"Great, I'll put the order for it in your chart. About 6 months for your leg, and a couple weeks at least for your face, but your facial bandages will be needed to be changed daily, which brings us to another point that I need to ask you about. Do you know anything about parallel dimensions that connect alternate realities to two separate worlds?" Asked Dr. Reynolds curiously.

"That's an odd question, but I believe it has been theorized in the past few years by a couple big shot scientists that they do exist and think that if they do exist then travel between them might be possible, it's just that so far nobody has been able to prove either theory to be true. But what does that have to do with my bandages coming off or being changed?" Alex asked now confused.

" I will answer your question in a moment but I need to know one more thing. Have you every heard of Furries?"Asked the doctor nonchalantly.

Alex blushed tinting his skin a light pink before he answered.

" Umm, Yes I have. I know that they aren't real or anything so I don't need a psych, but yeah, I've heard about them. I mean, I have a fursona on the Internet and If they we're able to change humans into furries I'd be one of the first ones in line. But I still don't understand what this has to do with -" Answered Alex before he was interrupted by Dr. Reynolds.

"Really? I'm a wolf furry. You? If you could choose what would you be? I mean seriously. If I told you that my associates and I have developed a way to make a human into a furry and was serious about it. What would you choose?" asked Dr. Reynolds intrigued.

"A wolf, specifically a dire wolf, but why do you-" Alex stopped mid sentence as he analyzed their entire conversation and could not accept the conclusion he came to.

"Wait a minute! Are you trying to tell me that I somehow went through some dimensional portal that no one knew about and ended up in some kind of parallel dimension where furries exist? No offense Doc, but are you off your rocker?"Alex asked incredulously and the doctor laughed amused.

" None taken, but seriously, yes that's exactly what happened. And I'm rather happily surprised you figured this out so quickly."replied Dr. Reynolds seriously.

"Ok, Doc enough joking around. Did Timothy put you up to this?" Asked Alex.

"I'm afraid I don't know of this Timothy, your talking about. And I'm very serious, the world you come from is in a parallel dimension from this one. From time to time someone from your world is in the wrong place at the right time and stumbles through a doorway into this world." Replied Doctor Reynolds.

"I'm sorry Doc, but this is a lot to take in. My whole life has just been dropped in a blender and set to puree', and you talk like it's nothing but another day at the office." Said Alex his voice almost a sob.

"Alex, I can't say I understand what you're going through. So maybe this will help." Said Doctor Reynolds as he carefully took Alex's right hand into his paw.

Alex starts to jerk his hand away, but his curiosity was getting the better of him, Alex felt all over Dr. Reynold's paw, touching the soft pads on Dr. Reynold's palm and fur against his hand. He feels the warmth of life coming from the paw and the fur covering the paw, this intrigues him further making him wanting to do some more exploring. Slowly he brings his left hand over and places it on the top of the Doctor's paw.. exploring the fingers and the soft finger paw pads. He even explores the sharp tip of his claws before releasing the paw.

Alex's eyes bulged under the bandages as he tried to comprehend what he was touching.

" There is no way this could be a fursuit glove, it's too well made.. actually it's too real. Unless this guy went to a lot of trouble and a lot of money to have the glove radiate the heat of a canine..no to radiate that kind of temperature from the paw was something that could not be duplicated without burning the material or making it impossible for a human to wear.. no this is for real it has to be. I don't know anybody that can make a paw glove that realistic...with latex maybe but the heat would eventually melt the latex or cause burns not to mention that his paw didn't feel rubbery or even smell rubbery. He smelled well like a wolf just after a bath. Maybe this is some elaborate prank set up so I take the fall and look like a complete idiot. No, that couldn't be because no human would go to all this trouble just for a prank, especially for me and the fact that I really broke my foot, damn that actually hurt..that leaves only one possibility. This is for real." Alex finally concluded as he thought quietly to himself. He then turned his head to Dr. Reynolds choosing his words carefully before he spoke as he was still unsure despite the physical evidence.

"Your telling the truth. I'm sorry for not believing you Doc. Just copping with all of this is a little much." Said Alex as his thoughts raced on all the ramifications of his accident.

"That's alright, I can really understand how you feel about waking up somewhere you've never been before. Had my share of them as a medical student." Said Doctor Reynolds.

"Sounds like you have done the all night parties like I have in the past few months." Alex replied with a humorous tone in his voice.

"Oh yes, I've had them. Now I need to ask you a few questions about your dietary requirements." Doctor Reynolds replied returning to a professional tone.

"My dietary requirements are simple, like most humans I'm an omnivore, meat and vegetables, fish. I'll eat just about anything eatable as long as it doesn't try to eat me first." Said Alex more relaxed than a minutes before.

"Thats good, then I won't have to worry about a special diet for you." Said Doctor Reynolds as he wrote notes down for the kitchen staff for Alex's food tray's.

"By the way Doc, when can I expect to get something to eat? I'm getting hungry, and this iv in my arm just doesn't fit the bill for my empty stomach." Asked Alex.

"I'll have some food brought to you in a few minutes, good to see that you're hungry. But first I think that we can try something that will help you in the long run, I'll be back in a couple of minutes." Said Doctor Reynolds as he opened the room door and shut it behind him.

Minutes go by as Alex lays there in bed waiting for the doctor to return. Which gives him time to think, and not be answering questions.

"What sort of whacked out clinic is this place? Is this doctor for real, or just playing games with my head? Did I see something in Shoehorn pass that I wasn't, something military? Or is this doctor on the up and up and telling me the truth? A week! Timothy and my parents are probably going nuts trying to find me, not to mention Jeniffer going nuts worrying about me. If I'm in a different world what am I going to do now? Hell! What sort of life am I going to have? The way the doctor talks it's like humans are unusual if not down right rare." Alex thought to himself until the door opened.

Meanwhile in an office down the hall.

"Crystal, I need you to see this patient of mine in room 34, right now." Said Doctor Reynolds with a tone that meant no was not an answer.

"That human you've been fussing over for the past week. What's the rush I thought he was still out? Crystal asked as she got up from her desk.

"Well he woke up almost an hour ago and I have been talking with him." Said Dr. Reynolds.

"Surely you mean that you where talking to him, not with him. Human intelligence is to low to support complex word association beyond simple words." Replied Crystal as she walked around her desk.

"He can talk with you just as well as I'm doing right now. Also he might be willing to be our next test subject for the gene splicing procedure." Said Doctor Reynolds putting his paws on her shoulders and looking directly into her yellow eyes.

"Alright I'll come and look at him and see if he will work for the procedure." She replied as she picked up her p.d.a. off the desk.

Minutes later back at Alex's room.

Alex's head turns to the sound of the door opening, and the sound of three sets of shoes in entering the room.

"Nurse pull the window blinds shut, while I dim the lights." Said Doctor Reynolds after he entered the room.

"Ah, doc, what's going on? And who else is here with you?" Asked Alex a little nervous.

"First this is my associate Doctor Taylor. Then I'm going to remove the bandages from your eyes so you can see, that everything I've told you is the truth. Besides I don't think you want to be hand feed like a pup." Said Dr. Reynolds as he approached the bed.

"Nice to meet you Dr. Taylor. And no Doctor Reynolds, I think after 13 years of feeding myself I can manage that quite well." Alex said with a jovial tone in his voice.

Before Dr. Reynolds could start to remove the bandages from Alex's eyes.

"Ah, Dr. Reynolds, I thought you said my bandages needed to stay on for two more weeks?" Asked Alex confused.

"Well for the rest of your face that's true. But your eyes I bandaged because I didn't need you going into hysterics the first time you saw me or one of the nurses. Just a simple safety precaution, that's all." Replied Dr. Reynolds.

"I can understand that, and you're right I would have freaked if I woke up and saw anything other than a human doctor looking at me." Said Alex looking in the last direction of Dr. Reynolds voice.

"Ok, now I'm going to start removing the bandages from your eyes. I want you to keep them closed and only open them slowly at first to allow your eyes to adjust to the lighting in here." Said Dr. Reynolds as he slowly unwrapped the bandage covering Alex's eyes.

"Sure thing Doc, the sooner I see the better in my opinion." Replied Alex.

"Now with your eyes uncovered tell me what your seeing with them closed." Said Dr. Reynolds.

"I can see some real lite red, but that's only from the blood in my eye lids. You have the lights really dimmed in this room, from what I can tell." Said Alex.

"Good, now slowly open your eyes and tell me what you can make out." Said Dr. Reynolds.

Blinking his eyes to get them adjusted to the lighting for a few seconds, then looking around before speaking.

"I can see that your wearing glasses, a gray or off white colored doctor's jacket over a lite blue shirt and nice dress slacks with a belt. Plus the name tag on your jacket says Dr. Reynolds Chief of Staff on it. Nice to finally see you Dr. Reynolds." Said Alex as he looked up at the almost six foot wolf standing next to the bed.

"Remarkable." Dr. Taylor says in almost a whisper as she writes notes on her p.d.a. quickly.

"And nice to meet you two, Dr. Taylor." Replies Alex looking at the lioness standing at the end of the bed. Causing her to look up from her writing.

"And you would be Nurse Jones?" Said Alex looking over at the collie standing near the windows. She gasps as he speaks her name.

"Ok, I'm going to turn the lights up slowly. Let me know if your eyes start to hurt." Said Dr. Reynolds as he moved over to the knob on the wall and began turning it until the normal lighting was restored.

As the light in the room returned to normal Alex takes in more details of the room and his doctors.

"Dr. Reynolds is a wolf alright, can't mistake that head and those almost white blue eyes and the fur. Dr. Taylor is a lioness, maybe five foot nine or ten tall with yellow almost gold eyes. Nice dress that shows all her curves. Nurse Jones, I, don't know how, but she looks almost like a collie, shes maybe five foot four tall, soft brown eyes with a tenderness about them. She's young, and even more attractive than Dr. Taylor. Why does nurse Jones remind me of Jeniffer?" Thinks Alex to himself as he gets to view them for the first time.

"Well Alex, now that you see that I was telling the truth to you. What do you have to say?" Asked Dr. Reynolds getting Alex's attention off of nurse Jones.

"I've got a lot of learning to do if I'm going to survive in this world. Being I kinda doubt theres any way for me to return to mine, otherwise you would have said something about it before now." Replied Alex.

"If there was a way for us to return you to your home we would do it as soon as your well enough to travel. But if there is a way for you to return to where you came from no one that I know of would know about it." Said Dr. Reynolds as he stepped up to the side of the bed, concern in his voice.

"I was wondering how and when did you learn to talk? Asked Dr. Taylor.

"According to Dr. Reynolds, My world is in a parallel dimension, there all humans can talk. We're not unthinking animals that survive on instincts alone, I've been in school since I was five years old and was due to graduate next year." Alex replied his tone of annoyance in his voice causing Dr. Taylor to back away from the bed.

"I didn't mean to imply that you were, I'm just trying to get an idea on how smart you are." Said Dr. Taylor in a defensive tone.

"Look, if you want to know how intelligent I am here's an indication. That device you have been writing notes down on this whole time is called a Personal Data Assistant or PAD for short. We have similar devices where I'm from, heck my iphone has the same capabilities as that does." Said Alex.

"Nurse Jones, why don't you go see if the kitchen staff has brought the tray of food for Alex." Said Dr. Reynolds breaking the tension in the room.

"Yes, Dr. Reynolds." Said Nurse Jones as she walked out of the room.

Alex watched her go and unknowingly smiled at her swaying waist and fluffy tail as it went out the door.

"Like what you see?" Asked Dr. Reynolds a slight smile on his muzzle.

"Yes, I'd be lying if I said no." Replied Alex, before blushing realizing what he had said. Bringing a giggle from Dr. Taylor and a small chuckle from Dr. Reynolds.

"Like I can help myself when theres an attractive lady around me. I'm hurt, not dead." Said Alex even blushing more.

"I'd think there was something wrong with you if you didn't." Said Dr. Taylor as nurse Jones walked back into the room carrying a covered tray.

"Well I think thats enough for now. We'll leave you to eat, while Dr. Taylor and I talk. Nurse Jones, take good care of Alex." Said Dr. Reynolds as he motioned to Dr. Taylor towards the door.

"Yes, doctor." Replied Nurse Jones as she sat the tray on a table and pushed it over to Alex's bed and then removed the tray's cover and sat it to one side.

Finding the remote control for the bed. Alex raises the head to a more comfortable position for him to eat.

"There you go, I'll be over here if you need me." Said Nurse Jones as she took a seat in one of the chairs to one side.

Looking down at the tray in front of him, Alex sees a bowl of soup with chunks of meat and vegetables in it and a package of crackers. Picking up a spoon he checks the temperature of the soup first before tasting it.

"Not bad, could use some salt and pepper, but still filling." Said Alex as he opened the crackers and crushed them over his soup.

"Uh, yeah the soup does leave something to be desired. I'm sorry for insulting you earlier." Said Nurse Jones her the last almost a whisper.

"Don't worry about it, apology accepted. It's not like I knew that I was in a whole other world from my own and that humans can't speak." Alex replied looking up from the soup at her.

"Well, most humans here have a basic understanding of language but nothing as complex as you do. But I think thats because most humans aren't educated like you are." Nurse Jones said smiling.

"And I never thought that I would be sitting here next to a real live fur. Opps! I sorry, I don't even know if thats the correct term." Said Alex as he stirred the crackers into his soup, his embarrassment showing as the exposed skin turned red blushing.

Nurse Jones giggles before answering.

"Fur or furry is the what most humans call us. But it's usually used in a derogatory form even by others like me, when we're mad at another." She replied.

"Oh, I see. So what do you all call yourselves?" Ask Alex between spoons of his soup.

"Well centuries ago most of us came from your world as normal animals, but over the years we evolved into the superior forms we now have." Said Nurse Jones.

"So, your species would be something like canis erectus superior or something like that." Replied Alex as he looked more closely at her.

"She was actually quit attractive for a collie, her hair colored from white to dark brown was tied up in a pony tail. Her body was almost to that hour glass figure which meant she was still growing, her breasts just starting to fill out along with her waist. She'd be a heart stopper in a few years if I didn't know any better." Alex thought to himself.

"Your close, just drop the erectus part. But generally we call our selves as a whole Anamorphs " Nurse Jones said her ears turning a dark pink as she blushed.

"Your cute when you blush like that." Said Alex smiling at her, causing her to blush even more and turn her head away embarrassed, just before the door open and Dr. Taylor walked in.

"Hope I'm not disturbing your dinner? Just have a few questions I need to ask." Said Dr. Taylor.

"Ask away I'm full." Said Alex pushing the table away.

Nurse Jones quickly came over and removed the table. Giving Alex a smile before she picked up the tray and walked out with it.

"Any known medical problems we need to know about?" Asked Dr. Taylor.

"Nothing that I'm aware of, been in good health all my life." Replied Alex.

"No drugs or drinking problems?" She asked.

"The only drugs I've ever taken are pain killers for the occasional head ache or pulled muscle." Alex answered.

"Good, then there shouldn't be any problems with the procedure-" Said Dr. Taylor but was interrupted by Alex.

"Wait a minute, you're actually able to turn a human into a Anamorph? No offense intended." Asked Alex shocked.

"None taken. We have, but with less than expected results." She replied in a almost sad tone.

"Why would you want me to be your guinea pig if you've already done it?" Asked Alex curiously but suspiciously.

"Because your the first human we've encountered that has intelligence equal to our own. The procedure just changes your body it doesn't effect your intelligence, memory or personality. So when we used a uneducated human from here, we'd got just a dumb fur that would be good only for breeding or experiments. And to be truthful thats not what Dr. Reynolds or I want. Full successful intergeneration into society as a Anamorph is our goal." Replied Dr. Taylor, confident and sincere in her convictions.

"At first I thought that Dr. Reynolds was just joking with me, but now I'm not so sure after what you just told me. But why would you do this?" Asked Alex still recovering from what he just heard.

"Well, you didn't hear this from me, but I feel that you need to be told. Some years back the government enacted a law that requires all adult humans that come from your world to be hunted down and killed. Some bigoted big shot in the government at that time felt that adult humans posed a big threat to fur society. Now children are the opposite and allowed to live because they were found to be more mailable to life as a pet. I find the practice disgusting, but as long as it's benefiting society, legislation is not going to change any time soon. So by our bringing you to our clinic we saved your life, but luckily your still considered a child by our standards. Otherwise the rescue crew would have never brought you out of the mountains and to us here, they would have ended your life there as kindly as possible." She explained as she went through a myriad of emotions ranging from nervousness to disgust.

Alex sat there shocked as he listened to her speak. He could tell that her disgust was genuine because her lips went into a snarl as she was speaking.

"Alright I always said if I had my chance to become a fur that I would jump on it. Is there anything else you need to know from me?" Requested Alex finally accepting the facts, and was surprised to find himself happy about the prospect.

"Any thoughts on what type of, well, fur you want to become?" She asked hesitantly and somewhat embarrassed.

"Well my fursona is a anthro dire wolf, but I don't know if thats in the realm of possibility. To bad I can't access the internet site my fursona is posted at." Replied Alex.

"We do have an world wide information network, but I don't think it crosses dimensional lines. Dire wolf is an option, Most of them are military, police, bar bouncers or even security guards at prisons. Anywhere their size and strength are a benefit to them." Informed Dr. Taylor honestly.

"Bar Bouncer, uh, that sounds good. But I don't see anyone my age getting into a bar much less work at one. But it's definitely worth consideration in the future when I come of age. " Said Alex seriously.

"Heres an idea, to keep your options open I'll have a book brought to you with the various ah, breeds that you will be able to look at to make your final decision." Said Dr. Taylor encouragingly.

"That will work, and well it's not like I can go anywhere." Said Alex raising his leg with the cast on it jokingly.

"I'll have it brought in before I leave for the day, Is there any questions you have about the procedure?" Asked Dr. Taylor.

"Yeah, how long will it take?" Asked Alex.

"Well myself and Dr. Reynolds have worked it out that the injections will be done over the course of a month. It might be longer if there are any unforeseen problems develop." She replied.

"What sort of problems are we talking about." Asked Alex a worried tone in his voice.

"First, there is the possibility that the procedure won't work by your body rejecting the new dna being injected. Second there is the possibility that it may take longer than a month. But I do assure you that before myself or Dr. Reynolds even start the procedure that we'll take every precaution we can." Said Dr. Taylor.

Nodding his head before saying anything else.

"I'll look at your book and decide on my future form. Does that screen over there on the wall work?" Asked Alex pointing at a lcd screen.

"Yes, it should. Why?" She asked.

"If I'm going to live in this world I need to learn about it and I might as well as start while I'm laying around here." Replied Alex as he looked around for a control of some kind for the screen.

"What are you looking for?" Asked Dr. Taylor.

"The control for the screen." Replied Alex.

"Oh, thats simple. It's voice controlled, let me unlock it for you to use." Said Dr. Taylor as she turned to the screen, her tail swaying from a hole in her dress catching his attention.

"Monitor on, enable use for patient in room 34." Said Dr. Taylor as the screen jumped to life the volume set to mute.

"Nice, voice controlled. Wish I had something like that at home." Said Alex, his thoughts on what she looked like from behind without the dress and that tail of hers swaying like that.

"You don't have voice controlled equipment in your world?" Asked Dr. Taylor as she turned back around.

"Some but it's still to costly to mass produce yet." Replied Alex glancing up at the screen.

"Well I send nurse Jones back with that book in a while. Oh, and don't be alarmed by what you see on the screen, most of it is fake except the news." Said Dr. Taylor as she turned to leave the room.

"Ok, I'll be waiting on her." Said Alex as she left.

Watching the monitor screen, Alex turns up the volume to hear the news and as he watches he realizes that this world is no better than the one he came from. There are wars, murders, robbery, rape and all the other nasty things that happened daily back home. But it really hits home that he is in a different world as he watches as a humans are lead around on leashes and mostly naked.

A few minutes pass before Alex realizes that it's time to answer the call of nature.

"Monitor off." Alex said disgusted by what he saw on the news.

"Oh, man do I have to go to the bathroom." Thinks Alex to himself looking around his bed and near it for a bedpan or urinal.

"Damn, just going to hobble over to the bathroom" Said Alex pulling the covers back only to realize that he's naked.

"Least they could have done is give me a gown or something. But then again I've been out a week, wonder who's been keeping me clean? Hope it wasn't some male nurse with rape on his mind. Now nurse Jones I wouldn't mind, heck Dr. Taylor ether." Alex thought to himself as he swung his legs off the bed and set his right foot on the floor.

"Shit! That floor is cold!" Exclaims Alex as he tests his weight on the leg while holding onto the bed.

"Ok, just like hop scotch. Just hop over to the bathroom and take care of business." Thought Alex to himself as he let go of the bed and started hopping toward the bathroom holding his left leg up. Reaching the bathroom he holds onto the door frame for a second before hopping inside.

Inside the bathroom he finds that there isn't much difference from earth bathrooms to the ones here, just the size of toilets and tubs being somewhat larger than what he is used to. That and instead of toilet paper he finds sanitary towelettes. After relieving himself he reverses the process and hops back out of the bathroom and toward his bed. As he leaves the bathroom a startled gasp causes him to almost lose his balance and almost fall.

"You shouldn't be out of bed!" Nurse Jones exclaims as she quickly sets a book down on the table and comes over and helps him back to bed.

Once in bed again.

"Sorry, but I had to relieve myself, and there was no bedpan or anything else I could use nearby." Alex said as he pulled the covers up.

"You could have just called for help by pushing the button on the bed control. Dr. Taylor asked me to bring this book to you." She said handing him the book, her ears that dark shade of pink.

"Oh, I didn't see the call button. I'm sorry." Replied Alex taking the book and opening it.

"Why does she have you looking through a book of pictures for? Not that it's any of my business." Said nurse Jones as she reset his cast on the pillows.

"This procedure her and Dr. Reynolds have been working on supposedly can change a human into a, fur uh, sorry, Anamorph. No insult intended." Said Alex as he turned to the first set of pictures.

"None taken, Your thinking about becoming a fur, why in the world would you do that?" Asked nurse Jones.

"I can't return to my world from what the Doctor's have told me. And from what I have understood from my talks with them, humans here are uneducated and no better than animals. I would be a freak in your society, If not a circus show." Replied Alex.

"What ever gave you that idea?" Asked nurse Jones.

"From the news, Dr Taylor enabled the monitor for me so I could learn something of your world. Worst part about it was the fact that most humans are treated like pets, lead around on leash. So the choice for me is simple, ether the procedure or be someones pet. I can't go home, and here I'm no better than a pet for some fur. I'm no ones pet and refuse to..be..on..a..leash." Replied Alex the last of it coming out a sob as he broke into tears unable to hold back any longer.

Taking the book from Alex's hands Nurse Jones sits it down on the table and then sits down on edge of the bed. Reaching out she wraps her arms around him and holds him close as he cries. Slowly she rubs his back and shoulders trying to comfort him and calm him down.

"It's not like that every where here, there are some of us that try to help humans. Some of them like Dr. Taylor and Dr. Reynolds provide free medical care, others help with work or food. And even others are trying to get the laws changed so humans have rights like all Anamorphs and not be leashed or a pet. The time is coming when that will be a reality, and not just a dream of some Anamorphs or humans." Said Nurse Jones in a soft voice.

"Thats..why..I..must..change..or be someone's pet and that is something I just can't do." Sobbed Alex his voice cracked from crying.

"I can't even begin to understand how you feel. I just know I wouldn't want to be a pet either. So in that respect I can understand your feelings. And if I were you I would want to take any chance I had to avoid that fate. I'll give you any help that I can, all you need to do is ask. Besides your cute for a human and I don't mean that as a pet." She said comfortingly but blushing shyly at her last sentence.

"Your not so bad yourself, Hottie. Oh shit, I just said that out loud." Said Alex as his skin turned almost reddish purple from embarrassment.

Giggling a little bit at Alex's statement before speaking.

"Thank you for the compliment." Replied nurse Jones her ears turning a flirty shade of pink.

"Why don't we have a look at this book Dr. Taylor sent you?" continued nurse Jones trying to change the subject as she picked up the book from the bedside table.

"That's a good idea." Replied Alex relieved at the change of subject.

Hours later the sun has set and Alex has dozed off looking through the book. She takes the book from his lap and sets it over on the table before covering him up without waking him. And then turns down the lights before she exits the room.

Chapter 2: Moving Forward

As nurse Jones quietly closes the door to his room she is paged by Dr. Reynolds over the intercom.

"Nurse Jones, report to Dr. Reynolds office." And is repeated twice more over the speaker before returning back to the normal music of the day. Shaking her head nurse Jones turns and heads toward the office area instead of the nurses locker room.

Reaching Dr. Reynolds office she lightly knocks at the door and waits a few seconds before cracking the door open and sticking her head in.

"You wanted to see me? Dr. Reynolds." Asked nurse Jones, nervously.

"Yes, come in and have a seat." Replied Dr. Reynolds looking up from a file on his desk.

After closing the door and sitting down. Nurse Jones realizes that Dr. Taylor is seated in the other high backed office chair in front of Dr Reynolds desk.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know you and Dr. Taylor where talking." Apologized nurse Jones, as she started to get up.

"Actually we both wanted to speak with you, so sit back down and we can get this over with and go home for the night." Said Dr. Reynolds.

Nurse Jones sat back down and looked back and forth at her bosses.

"The reason we wanted to speak with you is about the human boy, Alex. Hows he taking the shock of waking up here?" Asked Dr. Reynolds.

"Not as bad as he could. He is concerned about being someones pet, I think thats why he is opting for the procedure that yourself and Dr. Taylor have developed." Replied Nurse Jones.

"He knows then that humans here are kept as pets. What was his reaction to find that out?" Asked Dr. Reynolds.

"Alex, was scared of the thought of it. He cried and shook so badly that I had to comfort him for a good ten minutes before I could get a word out of him." Responded Nurse Jones.

"So, I take it that he has been looking over the book I sent him?" Asked Dr. Taylor.

"Yes, I have spent the last almost three hours looking through it with him. And telling him what I know of each species when he asks." Said Nurse Jones.

"Good, has he shown any preface to any one species yet?" Inquired Dr. Reynolds closing one file and opening another.

"So far he's looked at over half the book but hasn't said much to me about it. He although did point out one picture that he said reminded him of a breed from his world. Something he called a wolf hound?" Said Nurse Jones looking a little lost about the name.

"It's a breed of canine that they have in his world. But really what is your thoughts about Alex?" Asked Dr. Reynolds in his no nonsense voice.

"Personally I think he is very smart, and is a good person. After the procedure, if it works; He'll be a productive member of society. But that's only if he is allowed to learn at his own pace." Responded Nurse Jones her nervousness coming out in her voice.

"You like him, don't you?" Asked Dr. Taylor taking a chance on catching her off guard.

"I'd be lying if I said no, after all I wouldn't be working here if I didn't like working with humans." Replied Nurse Jones in a soft voice as her ears turned a dark pink and her skin under her fur even darkened, causing both Doctors to chuckle at her.

"And that's the main reason I hired you, the ability to work with another race not of our own is rare." Said Dr. Reynolds after he stopped chuckling.

"Yes, working with humans is often a dead end in the medical field, but it does have it's rewards. Which is another reason Dr. Reynolds and myself have decided to change your duties and give you a pay raise." Dr. Taylor paused a second to gage her reaction before continuing. "Effective tomorrow morning you'll be fully responsible for all of Alex Davenport's needs here at the clinic." Said Dr. Taylor with a smile.

"I really don't know what to say except, ok." Replied Nurse Jones, her voice coming out shaken and surprised by the announcement.

"Before you accept the position, let's finish the details of the job. First, it's a 30 hour position that will require you to live here at the clinic. You will be responsible for all of Mr. Davenport's medical, educational and other needs including rehab for his broken leg until he is released into society. Of course we don't expect you to start in some of them duties tomorrow, lets say a week for you to move to on-site housing." Said Dr. Reynolds looking over at Dr. Taylor.

"But if I may ask, why me and not one of the other nurses on staff?" Asked nurse Jones looking back and forth at both of them.

Dr. Taylor nods at Dr. Reynolds and he pulls out a file and sets it on the desk in front of him then opens it.

"Back when you applied for the nurses job here, there was a few tests that you were required to take. One of them tests was a psychological evaluation that not only identified your fitness for working here but uncovered some interesting facts about your social preferences. One of those was the fact that unlike so many others that you have no problems working or being around humans, this alone is what got you the job over the dozen or so others that applied for the same job. Also after today's revelations into Mr Davenport's character, we decided that your the best one on the staff to be working with him for an extended period of time. Sure we have a few dozen nurses here that could do the job but your tests and our observations and other factors ruled the other nurses out for this position." Said Dr. Reynolds as he flipped pages in the file to one he was looking for.

"I see. I have no problem starting the position tomorrow night or the day after. Thats if I can move on-site in the morning, my dorm lease at the medical school runs out the end of the week and I haven't been able to find a place I can afford yet." Nurse Jones replied in a positive and confident tone.

"Thats what I thought you might say. I took the liberty and had a room assigned to you and a new ID badge made for you." Said Dr. Reynolds as he reached into his desk and produced a room key card and a new ID badge and handed them to her.

"I hate to sound ungrateful but, what else is included with this promotion? Nurse Jones asked as she took the room card and new ID badge from him.

"Besides the room, pay raise you'll also receive a food allotment from the kitchen." Said Dr. Taylor smiling at her.

"I'll start moving my stuff tonight, it's not like I have a lot to move and I would hate to miss work just to move. That's if it's alright?" Asked Nurse Jones.

"That's fine move in when your ready." Replied Dr. Reynolds as he closed the file he was looking at.

"Then if theres nothing more doctor's I'll go and start packing." Nurse Jones said as she stood up.

"Welcome to the project nurse Jones and we'll see you in the morning." Said Dr. Taylor smiling at nurse Jones as she move to the door to leave.

"Oh, one more thing nurse Jones. Your new room is next door to Mr. Davenport's new room which they should be moving him into right now over in building D 3rdfloor room 301 and your room is 302 which is connected to 301 by a nice living room. It's almost a like a small suite. So thats where you'll find him in the morning." Said Dr. Reynolds before she opened the office door.

"But I thought building D was only being used for storage and unneeded equipment?" Nurse Jones asked with a puzzled look on her face.

"Building D is actually the research building that houses the project. But with Mr. Davenport's agreeing to be part of the project we need him over there where security is better. Your ID badge will give you access to the building. Oh, and nurse Jones this project is on a need to know basis so don't go talking to your friends about it." Said Dr. Reynolds the last in a real serious tone that left no lies about what would happen to her career if she talked about it.

"I understand Dr. Reynolds." Nurse Jones said as she quickly left his office and headed for the nurses locker room to pick up her pouch and clock out, go home and start packing up her few possessions at the dorm.

Back in Doctor Reynolds office.

"Well Crystal, do you think she'll be an asset or a problem?" Asked Dr. Reynolds from behind his desk as he sat two shot glasses on the desk and then held up a bottle of very dark liquid with a look of 'you game' on his face.

"Make it a double. I sure can use it. I think she'll fit in as long as she doesn't ask to many questions that nether one of us want to answer." Said Dr. Taylor as she picked up the shot glass and tossed the drink into her mouth and smiled as the effects of the drink hit her system.

"I just can't believe how lucky we are to been able to get him. The military wanted to put him down when they found him in the mountains, lucky he was under age but just barely according to the id they found on him. Otherwise we still would be looking at the low intelligence ones back at the containment center." Replied Dr. Reynolds as he downed the drink.

"Did you see the way Mr. Davenport was looking at her when you sent her to get the tray earlier?" Asked Dr. Taylor as she shifted in the chair to get more comfortable.

"If he was looking any harder at her tail his eyes would have been on the tip of her tail." Responded Dr. Reynolds chuckling.

"I've been meaning to ask, what happened to his belongings?" Asked Dr. Reynolds as she got up from the chair and picked up her bag.

"Oh, standard military procedure, they took all of it including the clothes. The equipment he had will be back engineered and the clothes will be destroyed to avoid any chance that he was carrying something contagious." Said Dr. Reynolds as he put the glasses and bottle back into the drawer before standing up.

"Well lets call it a night. I don't know about you but I'm tired." Said Dr. Taylor as she walked over to the door and opened it.

"Ok, I'll see you in the morning. I'm going over to building D and make sure they got Mr. Davenport moved and to notify security about nurse Jones might be moving in tonight." Responded Dr. Reynolds as he locked his office.

"Good Night, Tarrance." Said Dr, Taylor as she walked down the hall towards the staff parking lot.

Minutes later in Building D at the main security/nurses station.

"Major, did the new patient transfer get done?" Asked Dr. Reynolds as he stepped up to the counter.

"Yes, Dr. Reynolds. They didn't even have to knock him out. If anything I'd say he was helping them as much as he could even with that broken leg. And talking both huskies to death. Watched it all on the monitor as they moved him here." Replied Major Grant a big dire wolf missing his left eye and ear.

"Good, I've transferred Nurse Emily Jones over to take care of him. She'll be moving into room 302 next to his, tonight or tomorrow so notify each shift about her." Said Dr. Reynolds as her wrote down all the instructions for the guards and on site medical staff before handing it to the major.

"Yes, Dr. Reynolds I'll see that everyone that needs to know is informed." Replied Major Grant as he took the instructions.

"Good night, Major." Said Dr. Reynolds as he turned and went back out the front doors to the staff parking lot and headed home.

Earlier back in room 34.

The motion of the bed woke Alex from his sleep, well that and the lights flashing on.

"Hey, can't a hurt guy get some sleep around here." Said Alex almost causing one of the nurses to jump to the ceiling.

"Sorry, didn't mean to wake you. Dr. Reynolds has ordered you to be moved to a different room." Said the male husky at the head of the bed.

"Ok, I need my book, wheres the book?" Asked Alex with worry in his voice.

"In bag." Said the female husky at the foot of the bed pointing between Alex's legs, before opening the room door.

"Oh good, Dr. Taylor would probably get mad if I lost that book of hers. Aw well, I was just getting to like nurse Jones too. Darn guess I'll have to break in a new nurse in the morning." Said Alex the last in a joking tone as the bed rolled down the dimmed hallway.

"Nurse Jones is a good nurse, she was called to Dr. Reynolds office over an hour ago over something. I saw her just before the order came to move you over to building D she was cleaning out her locker in the nurses locker room. Which means she ether got fired or quit the clinic." Responded the husky from behind him.

"I hope she didn't get in trouble over me? Asked Alex his voice full of worry.

"I've been here almost five years now and I've seen only one person get fired in that time. And then it was because the doctor misdiagnosed an x-ray that caused the death of a human. Dr. Reynolds gives everyone a lot of chances to get with the program, but if it costs a life human or fur then he's left no choice but to fire them." Said the husky as he pushed the bed into an elevator and stepped in just as the doors closed.

"If he has that high of standards, why would she be cleaning out her locker?" Asked Alex as the elevator stopped and the doors opened.

"I don't know, she may have been transferred over to one of the other buildings here at the clinic." Replied the husky as he pulled the bed out of the elevator.

"How many buildings here at the clinic?" Asked Alex as they turned a corner and headed down another hallway.

"There are four buildings here at the clinic, each one is specialized to handle only certain medical problems. Building A is outpatient and emergency services, Building B is handles minor/major medical problems requiring the patients to stay, Building C handles surgery and intensive care which is where you were. And Building D is the research building that handles the project which is where your being moved to." Responded the husky as they turned another corner into another hallway and stopped at a door.

"Ok, sounds like-." Alex started to say but was cut off by a voice from a speaker next to the door.

"Authorization?" Asked the voice from the speaker.

"Patient transfer from Building C room 34 to Building D room 301 per Dr. Reynolds as of 22:35 hours." Replied the husky.

A minute passes before a buzz is heard from the doors and then they open.

"Proceed to elevator 2 and up to floor 3 and report to the nurses station there." Said the same voice from the speaker.

"Understood." Is all the husky said as he pushed the bed forward through the doors which closed behind him only seconds later.

"Wish maintenance would get that speaker fixed it's getting worse every time I come over here." Said the husky under his breath that Alex heard and chuckled about softly.

After turning a corner the husky looked down at Alex.

"You heard me say that?" Asked the husky as he stared at Alex.

"Yeah, and it's true that speaker does need to be fixed, if it was any worse all you could make out would be static." Said Alex looking up at the husky.

"Are you going to be part of the project?" Asked the male husky.

"Yes, well I hope to be that is." Said Alex watching the hallway lights pass overhead.

"My mate, she was human like you once. Just not as talkative. Dr. Reynolds procedure does work but only on the body not the mind." Said the husky as he stopped the bed in front of a elevator with a big 2 painted on it and pushed the button to call it.

"So does she work here also, I would like to meet someone that has been changed." Said Alex with enthusiasm and smiling.

"You already have, she's guiding the bed." Said the husky as the doors to the elevator opened and they pushed the bed into it.

"Cool, so whats it like to be changed?" Asked Alex.

As the doors open the female husky looks Alex straight in the eyes.

"Pain." Is all she says before pulling the bed out of the elevator and over to the nurses station fifteen feet away and stopped.

"Patient transfer from C room 34 to D room 301." Said the husky looking over the counter.

"Room 301 is over there, just park him in the normal spot and head back to Building C they just called to check on you." Said the nurse behind the counter.

Following the nurses directions the huskies move Alex into the room and park his bed in the normal spot. Before leaving the male husky looks at Alex.

"Good luck with the procedure. Hopefully you'll have better luck than my mate did." He says and then is gone out the door closing it behind him.

"Well at least this room looks better than that other one. The walls are painted blue instead of white. And what do you know it even has a monitor, a dresser, a desk besides just a bed and a table. Hot damn! A wheelchair even, good now I don't have to ask for someone to help me to the bathroom." Thought Alex to himself as the medicine pump injected more pain killer into his leg and shortly he drifted back off and was sound asleep in seconds.

At Nurse Jones dorm.

"Hey, Em your home late. Whats up?" Asked Brenda the red fox laying on the bed as Emily walked in carrying a few boxes.

"Oh, nothing much just got promoted at the clinic and scored on-site housing!" Exclaimed Emily as she dropped the boxes on the floor.

"Damn girl your lucky! How did you swing that?" Asked Brenda as she sat up on the side of the bed.

"I'm sorry, I can't talk about it. You know, confidentiality agreement that I signed to get the job. I wish I could tell you, but it could end my career if it got back to my boss. And then I would end up lucky to get a job taking care of flowers." Said Emily as she started packing her medical books into one of the boxes.

"Hope they at least gave you a pay raise to go with the promotion. I take it that your moving tonight, then?" Asked Brenda as she stood up and walked up behind Emily and wrapped her arms around her waist.

"I had plained on it, I don't want to miss out on a day of work, especially if I'm getting paid for just being there." Said Emily as she patted Brenda's hands on her belly.

"Oh, poo! And here I was hoping for a little bar hopping before you left." Said Brenda pouting.

"Bre, I'm sorry. You don't understand, this job is an on call. You know, they call, you come." Said Emily as she pulled Brenda's hands lose.

"Least I could do is help you pack your stuff then. That on site housing couldn't of come at a better time for you though. I had to lie to the housing office again, they came by asking if you had moved out yet. If you ask me they really want that bed back, and I'll end up with a first year wet behind the ears fur that hasn't a clue about medical school." Said Brenda as she picked up a box and started putting Emily's music collection and player into it along with anything else she could get in.

"You know that guy I've been telling you about, he woke up today after being out for a week." Said Emily as she pulled her suit cases out from under the bed.

"Well what's he like? Come on don't keep me in suspense here!" Asked Brenda her ears standing up with a gleam in her eyes when Emily looked at her.

"He's smart, nice and boy is he cute with them sapphire blue eyes that just seem to look right through you when he looks at you." Said Emily as she started packing her clothes into one of the suit cases.

"Girl you got it bad! You've fallen for him and don't even realize it!" Said Brenda in a real serious tone which caused Emily to look up at her.

"No way! I like him but I just don't know if he likes me that way, oh sure he sexually attracted to me but, you know that's not enough for me." Said Emily as she zipped the first suit case closed and reached for the other one.

"But isn't he a?" Brenda started to ask but stopped before she could finish it.

"Yes he is, and like I really care what others think about it." Said Emily as she opened the other suit case and started packing it.

"Not knocking your choice of who you go to bed with, just be careful thats all I'm saying." Replied Brenda as she started packing another box.

"Well, that I don't have to worry about to much. It's not like he could get me pregnant if we did anything." Said Emily as she rolled her eyes and allowed her tongue to hang out one side of her mouth causing Brenda to laugh.

"So did you two do anything today? Besides sit around and talk?" Asked Brenda coyly.

"No, we just talked between the doctors running in and out of the room all afternoon. Theres no privacy at the clinic even in the private rooms, you know that." Answered Emily as she pulled all her pictures off her desk and placed them into a box.

"Yeah, thats the reason I'm going into research work at some big drug company when I graduate next year." Said Brenda as she closed the box she was working on.

"I would have gone that route but didn't want to spend an extra 2 years in school just to get that type of job. Plus, I found out after I got here that it wasn't for me. Remember that lab that I almost infected everyone with that flu that humans suffer from each year?" Asked Emily almost laughing.

"Oh, yeah and that's the lab I had to sit next to you and make sure you didn't try anything like that again." Brenda shudders at the memory.

"Don't act like it was all that bad sitting next to me. At least you didn't have to sit next to that ursa that passed gas every other minute anymore. You know the one that had you hurling breakfast the first week of class before the professor moved him to the far back of the class." Said Emily as she closed the last box.

"Oh yeah, what ever happened to him?" Asked Brenda.

"Went on some research expedition into some forest and was never heard from again." Replied Emily as she picked up her portable quantum computer and packed it away in it's case.

"Well thats the last of it. I'll help you carry it out to your transport." Said Brenda as she picked up a box.

"Lets get it over with, I'm going to be up later than I want unpacking everything when I get to my new place." Said Emily as she picked up a box.

Within a half an hour Emily's stuff is loaded in her transport.

"Well this is it. You take care of yourself girl." Said Emily as she gives Brenda a hug.

"You too and don't be a stranger, write or come by if you get a chance to. After all I'm here for another year." Said Brenda returning the hug then releases it.

"Don't worry I'll keep in touch." Said Emily as she lets go of Brenda and then climbs in her transport and leaves heading for the clinic on the other side of town.
