Chapter Six.

The rigors of training

With an Eeveelicious surprise

After leaving Dawn in the room they had stayed in for the last couple days so she could get ready. Evin and Rika had gone down to the main loby of the pokemon center and placed their breakfast orders. Nurse Joy happily served them their meals and asked Evin if he intended to challenge the gym leader today. Evin was feeling great today and felt invigorated as he told that that was indeed his plan for the day.

Just about the time Evin and Rika began to devour their food, Dawn finally came down and joined them and soon after had her breakfast ordered and delivered. Dawn was in a cheery good mood as well this morning and so was Rika. Evin blushed from obviously knowing why, as the girls made remarks and comments to each other every so often. Evin couldn't help but feel embarrassed about most of what they talked about, but was relived that Dawn was once again feeling comfortable around him and that both girls also seemed to be getting along very well.

Dawn and Rika were both having dreamy flash backs after spending the entire night getting Evin to satisfy their every want and need. Last night had been such a exhaustingly wonderful experience, that even Evin couldn't help but blush and smile the whole time they ate, as he able to almost visualize what they were thinking. Both girls were absolutely in love with the fact that they knew he was theirs; and also expected him to keep pleasing them in the same manner after such a night, which made them giggle with excitement time to time.

Once outside the pokemon center, Evin first noticed the train tracks that he had failed to see when they had first arrived in the city, and remembered them from the game version of this world. This almost made him laugh at the way he seemed to always know where everything should be even though the world was completely not what he had expected.

As they walked to the gym, and Evin knew this one would be a bit different from the last one he had visited, and somewhat remembered the location of the book he needed to pull out. They entered the gym where Lenora's husband greeted them in the museum, where they could see all the interesting fossils, ancient artwork and carvings all on display.

Evin asked after his wife the gym leader, and after a brief introduction, Evin was led to the study in back were he then right off the bat found the book he needed to pull out, which caused the stairs move and create an underground passage. This about stunned everyone in the room except Rika, at how he seemed to know exactly where the mechanism was so fast and without even looking around. To Rika, this was only more obvious proof that he seemed to know everything about their world from his own.

Dawn asked him how he did that as they descended down the stairs, but all he said was, "I'm not in the mood for games right now." This was a joke he knew Dawn would never get unless she knew he was from the different world. Lenora gave them her greeting and congratulated Evin on a good sense of choice, telling him he broke most all the records of previous challengers.

After everyone was done with introductions Lenora laid down the rules of a two on two match before she sent out her Herdier. Evin knew her stratagem from the get go, and wanted to make sure Rika was in this fight, so sent her in first. Rika had a smug smile on her face as she entered the battle field, knowing that the small dog pokemon stood little chance against her. She intended to put down quick, due to the type difference and gave it a predatory look as she sized up her opponent, while all it did was growl at her.

Then the battle began and Evin called for an aura sphere. Lenora as Evin had expected, called roar. The sphere left Rika's paws just as roar took effect; an effect that Evin was somewhat astonished to actually see happen, as Rika then vanish inside her pokeball on his belt, then automatically right after Spazz was sent out.

The aura sphere that was already in flight hits its mark since it couldn't be dodged after being locked on to its target. The blue sphere hit the dog pokemon with a powerful concussion that knocked it across the arena and into one of the walls of the gym. After trying to struggle back to its feel, it fell back to the ground in a heap, knocked out.

Lenora was displeased at having things go this way already, but dutifully switched pokemon and called out her watchog. As expected this one looked really strong and well trained, but Spazz hissed at it as he readied himself to attack. Lenora called for mean look to make sure Evin couldn't call Rika back out, just as Evin ordered aqua jet. Evin's unexpected choice to attack, rather then trying to call his fighting type back out, threw Lenora off guard a little. She felt like Evin seemed to know everything she would do, even though she herself knew this boy had never seen one of her matches, a fact that she was all the more certain of because she also didn't allow cameras during her matches.

The aqua jet was dodged at the last second by Lenora's watchog who swung back around with hyper fang, which hit Spazz full force and knocked him back across the arena to his side of the field. Spazz shook himself for a moment before Evin called out sonic boom. Spazz reacted to the order and preformed the attack, which sent shock waves at Watchog that it promptly dodged. Watchog then retaliated when Lenora gave the order to use retaliate.

Spazz was badly outmatched, and took the beating as if he were a defenseless cub. He was in trouble, so Evin decided to get creative and called for Spazz to use aqua bite, at first Spazz didn't know what he meant, as he was being hit back and forth. But after a second, he managed to use aqua jet and bit onto Watchdog's tail in the process, which made the other pokemon yip in pain. Spazz held on as tight as he could as he was flung around. But this was a mistake; for Watchog then used slam and right after that, retaliate; causing Spazz to get slammed around till he fainted and let go. Evin was now finally able to recall Spazz and did so as he called Rika back out.

Lenora then said, "You seemed to have anticipated my every move up till now, and I have to admit your technique is good. I'm surprised you've done so well, but don't think you've won just yet; we still got some fight left in us." And with that she called for a hyperbeam and watchog shot a blast at Rika so fast that Evin had to use his aura to convey his order in that half second. Lenora thought she and Watchog had them beat, as the beam reached them and a blast of dust swirled around the arena.

But just as the dust cleared, Lenora saw the big hole in the ground where Rika had previously been and just as her head turned up from the hole the attack of her pokemon had made. She saw a blue blur in the air that now landed on her watchog using close combat.

Having hyperbeam shot at her, always seemed to infuriate Rika into a relentless rage, and she beat the crap out of the Watchog till it was knocked out and looking pretty messed up. The fight was over and Lenora stood there with surprise plainly showing on her face and asked in a surprised somewhat defeated tone, "How?" Rika had used detect and in close succession had jumped in the air in preparation to use close combat. It was only now the gym leader felt truly bewildered and wondered how Evin had told her to do those things.

Evin wasn't about to start blabbing about his powers, so after she asked him, he said, "I trained her well on what to do in that kind of situation." The gym leader couldn't ague with this, even if she didn't want to completely accept it, and for a moment Evin suspected she would press the matter. But Lenora gave in, and didn't question him further, and from there she presented him his newly won badge. Dawn had been awed by the battle and at how good both sides had been, yet ultimately, she suspected she knew what really happened being that she knew both Rika and Evin could use aura.

Though Evin had won, he felt almost like he had failed Spazz and lost. For with Spazz the fight had gone so bad that he now saw the classic error he had made of only focusing on his favorite or best, and knew he shouldn't depend on just Rika and himself for everything. He then came to the decision that he needed to take some more time off to train and strengthen the rest of his team and possibly get them to evolve to their next stronger forms. This was so that there would never be a repeat of this situation in a less friendly environment, where the out come could possibly be someone's life.

As they went back to the pokemon center to have the nurse fix up Spazz, Evin told Dawn his thoughts on the matter, and she agreed with him. After that Dawn added that she felt like she also needed to do some training with her pokemon as well anyway. Then a new thought then entered Evin's mind and he suggested he teach her martial arts. Dawn hesitated for a moment; she knew that she wasn't physically strong, but came to the conclusion that it couldn't hurt to learn how to defend herself with her own two hands, and agreed with a little apprehension in her voice.

When the nurse gave them the ok that their pokemon were fit and well again, they then left the city in the direction of the next. But once they were a good distance down the road, they cut through the bushes and into pinwheel forest where they found a nice deserted area that was hidden from the main paths.

First Evin put Rika to work perfecting her dark pulse with Dawn's Servine, and then had Aqua with Spazz pair up as sparing partners. Dawn had lillipup spar with Eevee, while Piplup sat on the sidelines and assisted any of the three groups when needed. Evin began training Dawn in hand to had combat, exorcizes, and other stretches to strengthen her body. The training was scheduled to last at least a week and at the end of that very day, Aqua took a time out for the night as she finally laid her expected egg.

The next day, training started early in the morning and it was hard work for Dawn tom keep up with everything Evin was trying to teach her. But as the day progressed, Evin could all see great improvements in Dawn's form and stature as she gained experience. With the pokemon, it was all more or less fun and games as they knew they weren't trying to hurt each other, and every now and then they took turns at real challenges. Attacks became more powerful, movements more fluent and confident, and Evin between training with Dawn, tried to harness more of his powers.

On the third day of training Aqua evolved during a particularly aggravating match she was having with Servine and tried her best to out do the grass type. But in this case she couldn't over come the serpent and had to call out she was bested when Servine had her good well and wrapped up in her coils. The next day after that, Lillipup also evolved into a herdier and had finally beaten Piplup in a match after seemingly hitting a brick wall for so long.

Everyone congratulated Herdier for his accomplishment and took a picnic break soon after. But unknown to all during their break, they had been being watched by a secretive white furred spectator ever since Aqua had evolved the day before, who was readying himself to make his move as he set his sights on his pry.

On the fifth day of training, Dawn's eevee, which she had been finally named Cilia, was wandering around without a partner near the edge of the trees. When suddenly out of nowhere, a white blur charged at her and knocked her over before dashing back off into the trees. The attack was so fast that Cilia never had the chance to get a good look at her attacker, other than seeing the color white. The attack wasn't overly powerful, but left her confused at what just happened. She started to try and run back to the others, but before she got very far, it happened again from behind, and knocked her into the ground face first.

She got up and barked angrily at her assailant as she saw white fur disappear into the trees again. Not wanting to be attacked like that again, Cilia started walking backwards as she tried to get to the others and was ready for another ambush now as she backed away. She only had a momentary hint that the other pokemon was going to attack again when she feigned letting her defenses down. But when the white furred intruder ran out at her again, she dodged and used bite and caught him by the thigh as she held so he couldn't run away. This made the white furred pokemon that she had hold of by the rump, yip with an all too familiar startled sound.

Evin heard the commotion and ran over to see what was going on, leaving Dawn to tend to a few stretches after a particularly hard workout. Spazz also accompanied him and when they saw what was going on, Evin sent Spazz in to help Cilia. With an aqua jet, Spazz slammed into the intruder and knocked the white furred pokemon flying, which let Cilia finish her retreat shortly after. She then hid behind Evin's leg and gave a few more indigent yaps at her assailant. Spazz looked like an old western cowboy in a showdown as he squared off with his opponent, which was a white ball of fluff Eevee.

Just as Spazz began to circle the other male and the eevee copied him in the opposite direction. Dawn came running over to see what was going on. Not being distracted by Dawn's movent, Spazz used water gun and the eevee used hidden power at a moments notice. The moves collided with a bang, and water and smoke swirled in a cloud of steam. Before Evin could react, the eevee was already right there on top of Spazz biting his arm and clawing his side. Evin then had Spazz use one of his newly learned moves aqua tail to slam the eevee off him. But the eevee took the attack well and was ready for more, as it then used agility and double team right after the other move. Evin then told Spazz to spin while laying on his back and use water gun as he had once seen on the show. The ploy worked and tripped up the little fox pokemon and then Evin had Spazz follow up with his last learned move, ice beam.

It hit its mark and froze the eevee solid from the neck down from being wet with other water attacks. Evin was impressed with how strong and spunky the little white Eevee was. So since this eevee was stronger then most weaker pokemon, he used a great ball. After the ball hit, it wiggled for a long time; so long in fact that Evin feared it was about to break, but then the ball after a small while finally signaled that it was all clear with a soft sound sound.

Dawn then said, "That was one tough little eevee. I wonder why he attacked Cilia the way he did." With hearing her name mentioned, Cilia nuzzled Dawn's leg and made a "Vee" sound. Then just as everyone was beginning to settle down Spazz began to glow as his evolution started taking place.

As he glowed, Evin could see Spazz's shape changing, expanding and getting taller as he became a floatzel. Spazz could feel himself becoming larger, his neck float extending down the length of his body, and also felt his teeth becoming longer until his K9s stuck out. Once the glow of his evolution was over, Evin used his pokedex to see what new moves Spazz had possibly learned and it listed out, (crunch, ice beam, aqua tail, and aqua jet)

Seeing that her mate was now a big strong floatzel, Aqua ran over and they celebrated his changed form. Then before too much more time could slip away from them, Evin had every one divide back into their groups, but since Cilia was still the only one without a partner Evin called out the frozen eevee he just caught. He had had Aqua cut the shivering fluff ball out of the ice with razor shell and then said, "Well your one of the gang now. So you might as well say hi to Cilia nicly since you two will be sparring together." Then Evin returned to training Dawn.

Once his shivering began to stop after being frozen, the new eevee huffed his annoyance about being captured and turned away from everyone, preferring to sit there and pound his tail on the ground in anger. Cilia already had a small grudge against the other eevee, so she merely turned her nose up at the strange colored eevee and walked away to watch Rika training with Servine. Over the course of the last five days, Servine had learned a new array of stronger grass type moves, as training was almost coming to an end.

The next day, Cilia began training with Servine since she didn't want anything to do with the male that had attacked her without even being provoked or giving her any warning. She was mad at him for what he had done and was angrier still when he never attempted to apologize. Rika was taking the day off to sleep so she could keep watch that night since it was now her turn again, and just before the sun was beginning to set, Cilia evolved into Espeon. She learned how to use psychic, and morning sun and after that, Dawn then furthered this and started teaching her how to use reflect and shadow ball from the TMs she had collected in the past. Everyone but Evin's new eevee was thrilled about her evolution, and also seemed disappointed.

That night while everyone was asleep except Rika, the white eevee walked over to her and barked a challenge at her. Using her aura and her voice Rika growled back and said, "You don't know what you're getting yourself into pup." But he didn't seem to care and attacked her with a bite. She kicked him off her leg with an annoyed swing, and then watched him as he used agility and double team like he had before.

Then with all the images around her he used hidden power, which to her, seemed to hit from all sides. They hit her all at once before all the images around her then lunged in for a bite. Seeing him do this, made Rika cringe as she used dark pulse and hit all the images at once including the real one, and sent him tumbling head over heels.

Evin woke to the commotion, and using his aura asked what was going on. When Rika relayed what was happening, he replied, "Don't over do it with him, give him a good workout till he can't keep going, then let him be. I think he's challenging you because he sees you as the strongest, or the... alpha of the pack." As he had said, Eevee loathed looking like an inferior pup and wanted the respect of everyone. His entire life had been hard up until now.

****

His parents had abandoned him as a pup right after he had been weaned from his mother's milk because of his odd color. His father had chased him away from their nest and left him alone deep in the dark lonely forest, while his other brothers and sisters still had a warm nest to stay at. At that young tender age he had to fight to survive at every corner and learned some hard lessons along the way. Other pokemon shunned him because of his odd color as a shiny pokemon and he often found it hard to find a lair to call home as he was often run of by larger pokemon.

Finding a mate during mating season also soon became an issue as he matured over the next year when the month came around. Females often didn't want anything to do with him and the ones who didn't mind so much were taken by stronger eeveelutions before he could bind himself to the ones that allowed him to try. Seeing this other eevee Cilia in this strange assortment of trainers and pokemon all trainer together, he had decided that he would get a mate one way or another.

He knew that the possibility of getting her to have pups now that the season was over was very minimal, but all the same to him he wanted to try. He knew it was a little shallow to think like this, but it looked like she had a good family to take care of her. He didn't care if the pups she might have ended up being raised by humans, but he didn't necessarily want to be captured either. His will was strong and now that he had survived his first year on his own, he was determined to make his own path and see to it that his genes were passed on.

Eevee kept trying to gain the upper hand against Rika as he attacked again and again. But everything he did only ended badly for him, by either getting tossed aside or bounced around when she used dark pulse to defend herself. After a while, Evin gave up on sleep and came out to watch, and saw the little eevee's determination first hand.

He admired the smaller pokemon's spunk, and could tell he was working things out after each attack, as he showed how smart he was by making it progressively harder for Rika to dodge or deflect his attacks. When the fighting reached its peak, Rika finally grew tired of it and jabbed the little eevee with a fist and sent him rolling for one last time before she was going to make Evin intervene. It wasn't a very damaging hit, but it had landed in such a spot that it had taken Eevee's breath and balance away, which made him look weak from his perspective as he picked himself up.

He barked his pent up anger and aggravation at her for doing that, and before they knew it, the eevee's white fur began to glow just as the night reached it's latest point of midnight. Then, while both Evin and Rika where still watching in awe, in the mists of eevee's evolution it used Dark pulse. Rika dodged the attack, but was very surprised that the attack had even come in the first place, much less during an evolution. Then the light began to fade, and before Rika and Evin was a blue ringed, yellow-eyed umbreon, who howled as he used the recovery move moonlight to recover all the damage he had been taking.

Evin checked for what other moves he had learned and found that he still had double team and agility other then the two moves he just learned, which were dark pulse and moonlight. Then Evin finally said out loud the get the umbreon's attention so he wouldn't begin challenging Rika again, "Ok that's enough for tonight." The pokemon looked at him with surprise as he finally noticed Evin standing there, before Evin then said, "Now that we know the kind of environment you like fighting in, how would you like to be called Shadow?" Umbreon turned his head sideways in a strange jester before noticing that he had just evolved and gave himself a quick look over. Then he took a moment think about what Evin had ju8st said as he let his anger at Rika die down. He decided that he liked it and gave a strong affirmative bark.

That done, Evin returned the dark pokemon to his ball, being that he didn't want any more interruptions of his sleep tonight. Then told Rika good night as he got back in bed. Rika spent the rest of the night looking up at the stars and thinking about what her life would have possibly been like if she had never met Evin, and every now and then scanned the area with her aura.

The next morning when Evin let Shadow out of his ball, the others were amazed at the dark type that now stood before them. A strange thing to have happen just after being caught so soon, but now that he had, everyone except Cilia and sleepy Rika congratulated him. Shadow gave a soft purring growl and smiled as Evin scratched him behind the ear. He could get used to this kind of treatment after what he had been through all his life, but he was still skittish of the thought that it might not be as it seemed. Evin noticed that Cilia seemed to not like him much at all, as she kept her back to Shadow at all times. Evin had hoped that they would become battle partners and help each other train and work together like he had done in a few pokemon games where the two could cover for each other's disadvantages.

But no, Cilia seemed to have it stuck in her mind that she didn't want anything to do with him. Even while they all finished up their last day of training Cilia had just ignored Shadow at every turn. And by the time night had come and Shadow took the watch since he had rested for most of the day without a battle partner, he was a little upset that Cilia wouldn't even knowledge him. In general Shadow had always enjoyed being awake at night, but tonight he was a bit frustrated.

Everyone else except the one he had wanted to really notice him had accepted him. He practiced his moves for most of the night to blow off some steam and get a feel for the way his new body could move and react, but soon this wore him out and he decided to try something he hadn't thought of yet; to apologize to Cilia for attacking her.

He went over to where Cilia was sleeping and poked her with a pawn until she was awake. Cilia hated being up at night, and made her annoyance known with a growl as she spoke in poketalk, "What do you want?" Shadow had to gather up his troubled thoughts since he had never attempted what he was about to do and said, "I just wanted to say I was sorry for attacking you the day we met... and I was, you know hoping that maybe you and I could possibly try to get to know each other?"

Cilia growled again and almost shouted, "Right after it had happened, I would have settled for this apology. But after thinking on it some more, I've decided not to forgive you, and on top of that I don't like being awake at night!" Shadow was almost in shock from how she had just reacted. He was trying to be nice and even told her that he regretted his first approach of her, and she went and told him off just like that.

Not knowing what else to really do after getting such an envenomed reply from the one he had hoped to get close to. Shadow found himself a dark place near the forest to sit and think as he looked at the camp from afar for the rest of the night while he tried to forget Cilia's hatefulness.
