The first in the beginning of a long story about love and Easter. A story of evolving into a happy person.

One Happy Easter!

:Based on a true event the furs and details have been changed to make a good story:

Easter has always been my favorite holiday. Never been sure why really, could be because the Easter Bunny is the only rabbit known wide and far for being a rabbit. I smile up at the wolf holding me in his arms, and then out into the park. Little tiny furs are searching through the grass and even dipping their small hands into the pond looking for the colorful eggs I hid early this morning.

It reminds me of being young:

The store is huge, smells of plastic and lemon cleaner. Mom and dad trail behind me, the rest of my family in line ahead as we wind our way through the tight crowds toward the thin manager. He's some kind of working breed, a dog with long fur of russet brown and white that doesn't hide his bright jewel blue eyes.

When we reach him he smiles, bright a toothy. "Happy Easter! All these little ones going to hunt for eggs?"

My mom smiled at him. But I could see the sadness in her eyes. "Yes, we don't really have-" She paused and her eyes glistened with moisture. I took a step toward her but the man moved forward and placed a hand on her shoulder.

The dog smiled and nodded. "Okay let's get them set up in their age groups."

My siblings split up, all eight of us found the signs for our grades and stood waiting anxiously. I found myself under a big pink sign marked '2nd Grade' I could see all my brothers and sisters lined up with all the other little furs. Our distinctive ears standing floppily above most of the other furs in line. No other rabbits stood with us so far as I could tell, but many wolves and a few horses, cats, and several different breeds of dogs stood with us. Each group was crowded into the isles. Each isles was marked off and blocked by an annoyed looking clerk trying to keep the tides of reaching hands away from the brightly colored eggs behind each of them.

I smiled slightly watching the smallest kids striving to get the eggs behind the harried looking Orca boy of about eighteen. My smallest sister stood among them not even noticing she was the smallest. Her cute little paws reaching for the nearest pink egg just like all the others.

My oldest brother stood with three other furs his age and they tried to look like they didn't even want the eggs that were spread down the aisle before them. They failed, everyone of their eyes glanced down the aisle probably making plans on where to go first.

My group was the largest. Almost twenty little furs stood around me. I was among the bigger furs there, even if my ears didn't add a foot to my body I was tall for my age. I stood in just about the middle of the crowd. Ahead of me the others were jostling for a good spot while I noticed something about almost all of the furs around me. They looked as hungry as I felt.

One small wolf didn't seem to fit in, he wore better clothes and at least looked to not having a gnawing hunger in his belly. He stood near the front, he wore a bright red shirt over his bony chest. The manager's voice broke the tension among the others as I stood watching the crowds move. "The Easter egg hunt will begin in three minutes! Good luck to everyone! And have a happy Easter!"

This announcement sent the rest of the furs into over drive. The jostling for position increased and I was slowly forced to the very rear of the pack. The loud-speaker come back on a and a low pitched whistle sounded. The mass of furs ran forward and I followed not really thinking about what I should be trying to do. Someone ahead of me yelped in pain and I moved through the crowd using my size to clear a way through.

The crowd surged around me faces and bodies moving about in a frenzy. Like the piranha found in the Amazon they swarmed around me, and the little fur that lay on the ground getting trampled. I saw a flash of a red shirt and my hand found his as he reached for someone to help him.

His hand found mine and just as the crowd moved past I pulled him up. He wobbled and grimaced. "Are you okay?" My voice was still high from having not hit puberty but I frowned and watched him.

He nodded and tried to place his foot on the ground. I frowned and held him tighter as his leg weakened with the shock of pain. "It hurts."

I nodded once and helped him hobble out of the aisle. A thin older wolf came and helped me. When the young wolf boy was standing with his mom I smiled and turned back to the still rowdy aisle filled with furs searching for the candy filled eggs. I followed behind them grabbing a few that were missed. By the end half a minute later the aisle was picked clean and the other second grade furs left.

The smaller wolf cub was crying into his mother's side either from pain or because he missed the hunt. I couldn't tell and didn't care which it was. I moved forward and pulled on his shirt tail. "I'm sorry you got hurt," I paused and when he turned I smiled a little and offered the five eggs my hands barely fit around. "I found these, you can have them okay?"

He looked from the eggs piled on my hands to my face and reached out to take them. His mom gave him support while he wobbled with the five candy filled eggs in his smaller hands. "Thank you." I smiled again and felt like butterflies fluttered around inside, their wings touching ever crevice of my heart.

His mom smiled at me as well. I backed up a little and waved before turning and leaving the boy with his mom, not crying any more. I didn't see him after that, the city had lots of schools and the store was near the center. I never expected to meet him again.
