#3 of Last of the Lycans

The third installment of Last of the Lycans. I just wanted to say I'm sorry about the inconstancy. I'm pretty busy around this time and it's a wonder that I'm able to write at all. But I love it to much to stop. So anyway enjoy!

Around the large wooden table sat nine men, with one sitting in a grand chair at the end of it. The room they sat in showcased human crafting. With hand carved wooden panels decorating the walls and great large woven carpets that had taken years of labor covered the floor. This was the room where all major Human matters were discussed or solved. This was the Elif, or the embodiment of it. The Elif served as a form of government for the Humans in which Nine men were chosen to "represent" the nine different human cities. Once chosen they were there for life and usually they picked their successor. Meetings were usually held in Futurda and to day was no different. The man sitting in the Grand chair spoke out first.

"This meeting of the Human Elif council will now commence. Please bring any problems you would wish to convey."

For a time the men sat quietly thinking over their cites problems, but it was the represented of the far east Human town of Truld who spoke out first.

"A problem? You want to know a specific problem?" He paused for a little effect. "Those damn Lycans are the problem, and you guys don't do anything about it!"

One of the others rolled their eye, he took notice.

"Something the matter Shurl?"

Shurl turned to him. "Yes, as a matter of fact Alard. I wish you would stop bringing the creatures up every single damn meeting!" His tone grew louder and angrier as the sentence progressed.

Alard stood up and slammed his open palms on the table. "I do because it's an actual problem. Unlike anything you've ever said."

Shurl stood up to, but in a slower fashion. "So you're saying that a problem like running out of wood to burn for the forges isn't one?"

"It's not deadly!" He yelled in response. I have to deal with death everyday!"

Another one of the nine men shouted out. "Well so do we!"

"At the hands of devilish creatures?" Alard snapped back. "You have no idea what these Lycans are capable of. You and your natural boundaries like mountains and rivers." Alards gaze shifted toward Shurl, who is the representative of Tempest.

"Have you ever even seen a Lycan?" Alard said his teeth grinding with every word that passed through his lips. "With his fangs dripping with crimson or his claws digging into human flesh. What about the eyes? Those devilish things, filled with a desire to kill! He is a beast, one that must be exterminated if we wish to survive any chance." He moves closer to the man, leaning in, ever close to his face. "He can tear your arms off without resistance. His teeth can separate your head from your body with a simple bite." Alard digs a bony finger into Shurls chest. "You have no idea What he is capable of."

Shurl pushed Alards finger from his chest. "I don't suppose you've actually seen one do that?"

"As a matter of fact I have!"

"Representatives please. Quiet down, no need to fight in here."

Alard grumbled and shuffled back to his seat.

"Alard, we will do something about your problems, as much as we will with Shurls, Deaturs, Griffs, or anybody else's."

The leader of the Elif and the representative from Futurda sat in his perch on the grand chair.

"Although, I do have something to bring to the table."

The other eight became quiet and focused on him.

"We had a problem in Futurda a little while ago. It seems that a young girl has been aiding and helping Lycans."

Alard jumped out of his seat again."How dare she. She should hung!"

The rest stared at him as if he had broken a rule, he sat down without saying another word.

"Naturally, we tried. But she was able to escape and we don't know where she went."

The nine men sat quietly for some seconds before the representative of Helcrest spoke. "Why should it be such a big deal, so what if she gets away. What could happen?"

"Well, what would happen if she finds other Lycan sympathizers? Or make new ones! We would have an uprising on our hands, and we wouldn't want that." He turned to Alard.

"Oh." Is what the man could say.

"So in each of your cites I want you to post this sketch on the announcements."

He held up a piece of parchment that had a crude drawing of a human female on it, but several features stood out.

"We want to catch her as soon as possible. I fear she may be gaining supporters now."

Green trees were a welcome sight to Luna as she made her way down the path. Actually anything green was a beautiful sight to her. She had seen nothing but dead things for the past two days. But even as she began to take in the wonder of the dense forest ahead of her she realized that this wasn't anything like the forest near her home in Futurda. Things in this forest could very much kill you. Her feet tread lightly on the fast diminishing path.

Sounds came from every direction, ones that were familiar and ones that gave her horrible visions. Luna quietly drew her short blade ready for something to come after her. This was Lycan Territory. Wild, untamed, beastly, or that's what everybody thought and it still scared the hell out of her.

Behind her, the sun started its slow decent and long shadows stretched out in front of her. She looked back at her only source of light. "Damn." For right now she would have to find a place to bed down. Luna ended her search almost as soon as she started it. She found a small clearing that was hidden on three sides by a large fallen tree, the other part faced south so she could escape if need be. Working against the sun's waning light Luna managed to set up her small tent and hide it with the brush. The last thing she did was light a small fire.

It's blaze drew her in and she sat with her back to the log staring into the fire softly chewing on some pork. Besides her the dagger lay covered and the sun disappeared over the horizon.

The same sounds that filled the young Humans ears also filled the young Lycans, only to Leith they were ones that he had grown accustomed to. Each one had a different story. His black nose crumpled up as he to a deep breath in, and it's own smell to. In front of him Leith watched the large sun set and fade to darkness.

"Mother Wolf has howled for the moon." He quietly said, still moving forward. Throughout his life Leith had always had a great sense of direction so it was easy for him to navigate at night. The darkness shifted the sounds and new ones arose, but again he was well acquainted with them and to top it off, no animal would dare face it off with a Lycan, that is except for Humans.

So he wasn't very worried about anything attacking him. That day he had just passed the town of Tve, skipping it all together, trying to get to his destination as soon as possible. Excitement drove him.

He had to reach the Ile foothills by day, crossing them during the night wasn't exactly the best idea. Leith trudged along trying to clear his head.

Once again his nose stuck in the air and Leith drew in a deep breath sampling the air.

"Hmmm?" Something was different, something wasn't the forest.

"What is that?" The smell was bitter, peppery, yet oddly pleasing. Smoke. But not smoke he had smelt many times before, something accompanied it, one he had never smelt before. This was a detour worth taking.

Leith ducked to keep a low profile and turned north. As he went the smell grew stronger and so did the young Lycans curiosity. He came upon a large tree blocking his path, the smell here now filled his senses, it tingled at this brain calling him just to jump over and find out whatever this thing was. But he had to take this quietly, who knows what it could be. So one paw at a time he climbed over the tree. A small clearing lay behind it along with a strange shelter and some small embers still burning.

"A settlement?"

Leith hopped off the log and tipped to the shelter. It was made of animal hide, a quick look inside didn't provide much. It only held a sleeping mat. His paw scratched one ear as he turned.

"Ah."

Before him lay a creature sleeping soundly, a creature he had only read about. It's face lay flat, no muzzle, no fur covered it's body except for long golden strands that came out of its head , it's paws were thin and had no pads whatsoever. A human.

Leith took a quick step back, right into the burning embers. "YELP!"

"AHH!" The Human shot up pulling dagger from her side. "Who?!" But she dropped the small blade once her eyes grasped what had woken her.

Her eyes were mesmerized by the sight of the large Lycan. The fur that covered his body was a luscious color of grey and the ears that topped his head twitched as he too stood stunned at the sudden meeting.

"A human?"

Luna heard the great beast make low growling noises. The language of the Lycans, it is subtle, quiet and simple. She had picked most of it up studying them. For humans forming the complex sounds with their lips for the human language made the simple sounds of a Lycans muzzle easy and simple to understand. She heard "A human." A reply! She had to reply! But with what? Something in Lycan or something in Human. She fought in her head and finally ended with a slight nod up and down.

The Lycan took several careful steps forward. "It's a human!" He thought. "Smaller than I thought." He moved to his knees to be face to face, muzzle to mouth.

Fear mixed with curiosity filled Luna's stomach and a smell intoxicated her brain. The strong smell emanating from the Lycan just about made her pass out but it was like a drug.

Leith drew in a breath as well, she did not have a strong scent and the one she had was still subtle after that. It reminded him of the remembrance drink, a sweet nectar.

Luna felt his eyes drill into her body, it was a strange feeling having a beast look you down and all she could do was return the awkwardness, if they felt such a thing. Her hand went along with her eyes closer to his fur, to the point where they hovered just barely above the grey fur. She took a plunge and placed her hand on his arm.

"Such strength!" She thought. "No man she ever knew could compare!"

From his muzzle she heard a small phrase. "Prraru Grrr-Arah Aroo?" Her head quickly turned it to Human. "Are you a Human?"

Luna looked away for a quick second desperately translating things into Lycan for him to understand. "Aof...aru Grr-Arah." It was a little separated but she must have said everything right. "Yes. I am Human."

Leith fell on the ground, this Human knows Lycan! How? Did all Humans know it! How did they manage to learn it!

Leith listen to her speak in his own language, he was having a little trouble understanding that a Human could speak their language. Well, he could read Human, but it was nothing compared to actually speaking it.

She added one more thing. "Aru Whofyoo Luna."

Her name was Luna! Leith quickly retaliated. "Whofyoo Leith."

Luna nodded slightly, Leith, a strong name. "Prrraru wharoo prahwhofyoo aroo?"

He replied, "I'm from a town called Kamit to the east."

She was getting the hang of hearing him speak, now she could almost instantly translate it.

Leith sat down front of the girl, nothing was said for a while. His eyes looked her down once again, the absence of fur was the most shocking feature about her.

"Can...Can I touch you?"

Luna was a little taken with the question, after all, he had let her touch him but asked if it was ok for himself. Such chivalry, and in a Beast no less. "I don't mind."

Leith extended a paw, it began to shake as he got close. His pads hovered over the Humans pink skin. Once he did touch her it was unlike anything he ever felt. Leathery, yet soft at the same time, something different. He liked it. He wrapped his paw around her arm, it was small too. Enough to where he was able to meet his other two fingers at the forearm.

Luna blushed as the Lycan explored her more. But after several minutes of his touch Leith moved back.

"Where are you from?"

Luna cocked her head to one side. "I was born and raised in the human capitol of Futurda."

"Futurda?" Leith said disgustingly. "How could you name a city after HIM!"

Luna cocked her head again. "Futurda, why not he's the one who gave us life!"

"Humans life, yeah, but not Lycan."

Leith sat back and crossed his arms, he had forgotten that Humans were created out of spite and revenge.

Luna in the other hand was intrigued, they had never taught her anything about the Lycans other then that they were merciless creatures hell bent on killing everything.

"How were Lycans created." Luna asked. Leith gave her a weird look, as if to say. You don't know? But he started anyway.

"Long ago, back when the world was just land, water, and green. The three Gods decided that it was time a race should be born. Two of them, Arita and Sumitar both thought that it should be a race that can be intelligent, discover new things, but not question their overall existence. The God's wanted to be known throughout the world."

Luna listened intently, she had never heard this before, only how her race was created.

"But Futurda disagreed, he thought they should be all powerful, capable of harnessing great power. But giving them that would give them also the ability to..." Leith paused for a moment trying to come up with the word. "Kill The God's. So Arita and Sumitar collaborated. Sumitar gave his fur which gave us our form and fur coats of our own, and Amita drew her blood and gave us our souls and thought. They say that the joining of the two gave us our strong need for love and attachment."

Leith continued. "Then as you know, Futurda found that Sumitar and Amita had gone and created their own so He made the...Humans. Creatures of immense thought and reasoning. Capable of destroying the Lycans."

When Leith finished Luna kept staring at him as if he were still telling the story.

"How do you not know what this? Even children know this."

Luna drew herself in and pressed up against the back of the tree.

"I have never been told about this, only that Futurda had created us to be the lords over all."

Leith rolled his eyes "Damn Humans. Well, now you know the truth."

Luna nodded but kept quiet, not responding to any of the Lycans questions or comments.

Leith took the hint and backed off. He took a glance around at the small settlement. He finally asked the question that had been bugging him. "Why are you here? Don't Humans travel in packs."

Luna glanced up at the heavens and drew in a sigh. "If I didn't run away t...the Elif would kill me."

Leith cocked his head, why would Humans want to kill their own kind?

"What's the E...riph?" He asked trying his muzzle at the complicated Human syntax.

Luna searched through her brain to find the words to describe who they were.

"The Elif...w....well, they are a governing body that oversees all Human activities. They claim to be for us but I don't buy the lies for one second. There is something about those men...the...the power they hold."

"Men?" Leith questioned, "Your governing body is ran by males?"

Luna nodded. "Yes."

"Strange."

Now Luna was intrigued. "Why? What makes that strange."

"Males and Females both have strengths and weaknesses, in order for any thing to get done they need to both be present to complement each other."

Luna couldn't believe her ears, these creatures were supposed to be stupid, dumb, downright primal. But here's one talking about government and has good ideas. It doesn't add up, The Humans were wrong. Or were they lying.

Luna suddenly felt sick. Nausea, seeded in her gut, started to climb until it ended with a head ache. She rubbed a temple with her hand.

"Luna? Are you okay?"

Luna was just about to say, I'm fine, but what would that accomplish? It doesn't seem like he's here to hurt her, if he was, he would have done it already.

"No. I...I don't feel well."

"Oh." A small whine left Leiths muzzle, apparently Humans were very frail. "Here let me help."

Luna protested against his help but stopped when his arms wrapped around her body. He lifted her like it was nothing! Leith took her into the small tent and placed her on the sleeping mat.

"I think I might be able to help. I'll be back."

Luna sat speechless as the large, furred creature ducked out of the tent and left into the forest.

Would he really be back? Luna didn't really know, all that was certain to her is that, she wanted him back.
