#1 of Everyday Life

Will rolled over in bed and opened his eyes, grimacing as the bright rising sun that was peeking through the shudders of the window momentarily blinded him. After a few minutes, his eyes adjusted to the light and he sat up in bed, throwing off the covers and exposing his naked body to the crisp morning air. Blonde hair fell down in front of his eyes and he brushed it aside causally; his bangs hadn't been cut in months and hung down as far as his chin, but the rest of his hair only reached the back of his neck. He kind of looked like Billy Loomis from 'Scream' before he put his glasses on.

Swiping a pair of boxers off the floor, Will slipped into them while grabbing a bottle of orange soda he had specifically left on his desk. Close enough to orange juice, right? The closet was thrown open and a pair of old jeans and a black t-shirt was plucked out and jumped into. Will also grabbed his fedora from on top of the closet.

"Is today a fedora day?" He asked himself as he flipped the fedora up in the air. The hat came down and landed on his head on a funny angle, but stayed on none-the-less. "Today's a fedora day! Yaaay, fedora days. Fedoras are the answer to all life questions." He rambled to himself, smiling as he unlocked the door of his room and walked out into the hall, narrowly missing a pink blur as it flew by. Will just watched as the girl ran down the hallway and around the corner to the kitchen. "Watch where'ya goin', love." He called out, adding a British accent because why the fuck not - British accents are awesome! Walking down the hall to the kitchen was only a five second trip, but Will got sidetracked by the copy of 'The Birth of Venus' that was hanging on the wall. Well, actually, it was a printed off copy that had been put in a frame and hung up, but it was good enough. There was art like that all around the house; 'Water Lillies' in the living room, 'Mona Lisa' in the bathroom, weird things like that. Personally, Will would have liked it better if there were actual paintings in the house, but what can you do when your dad is cheap.

Finally ripping his eyes away from the fake painting, Will walked into the kitchen and yanked the fridge open. After browsing the shelves, he ultimately decided to eat one of those Special K bars that Mom had bought last night. Stuffing his face, he sat down next to the small girl watching The Lion King on the television, a timeless classic. The movie itself was several decades old and yet was still every kid's favorite. He watched the movie for a few minutes before turning to his sister.

"Ter, can I please change the channel for a few minutes?" Will asked in his best big-brother-loves-you voice.

"But I'm watching Simba!" She pleaded, staring at Will with her sad eyes.

"I know, but it will just be for a few minutes, okay?" Will explained, stroking her hand.

"Fine!" She grumbled, handing over the remote for the TV. Will smiled as he flipped through channels until he finally got to the news.

"-ound late last night, the body was discovered by one Jeremy Stevens, a sixty-three year old English teacher teaching at Ridgemont High School. Stevens was out walking h-" Will quickly muted the television and turned back to his sister.

"Terri, can you go tell mom that space aliens are invading and I need my M-4 from the closet? Thanks." He smiled as Terri ran off to look for an imaginary machine gun; whatever got her out of the room. Will quietly un-muted the TV and sat forward on the couch.

"-ome of the photographs we are going to be showing are quite graphic, so we advise that you remove any small children from the room." Well, that had already been taken care of. "The victim, Randy Walters, a twenty-four year old fur, was found in a ditch on Stratika Road." A photo flashed on screen of a ditch lit up by police lights and camera flashes. The ditch was empty, but it was clear that there had in fact been a body in there at one point; the grass was matted and stained red with blood. "Walters was stabbed twice, once in the stomach area and once in the neck, and then urinated on by his attacker." The picture changed to what looked like an autopsy photo of the young weasels face, peaceful in his eternal sleep. "If anyone has informa-" Will sighed and changed the channel back to The Lion King, which was in the middle of Mufasa's death scene. Such a tragedy.

"Terri, you can have the TV back, I'm finished with it." He called out, setting the remote down on the couch. He stood up and turned to face his mother, who was staring at him rather sadly.

"What was on TV?" She asked quietly.

"Nothing Mom, they just found a body last night." He said, slipping past her back to his bedroom. "A young guy, twenty-something. Nothing really important." He smiled at his mother before closing the door and grabbing his school binder and sliding it into his shoulder bag. Sliding into his leather jacket and shoes, he opened the bedroom door again and walked out to the living room, where Mom had disappeared and Terri was waiting with her school bag.

"Will, hurry up, we're going to be late!" She said, as if being late was of any importance on the first day of fifth grade.

"Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm hurrying." He said, ruffling her long brown hair as he grabbed the car keys off the hook. "Mom, we're going to school now." Will called out, looking down at the keys in his hand.

"Have a good first day!" Came the reply, from somewhere deeper in the house.

Will opened the door and walked out to the driveway, where his old Dodge Zepplin was parked; it was an orange four-door with black fuzzy dice hanging off the rearview mirror, which was a must-have in old cars. He slipped into the driver's seat as Terri jumped in the back. Looking at Terri in the rearview mirror, he smiled and scratched the back of his head.

"You ready for your first day?" He asked, starting the car.

"Yep, how 'bout you?" She asked back.

Well, there's only one way to find out.
