The Dragon

This is probably one of the shortest stories I've ever written yet I had a chance to meet this wonderful being and I knew that I had to write about him, make him understood by the world.

The Dragon, whose name shall go unknown, is rare for his brilliance. His black scales would glitter in the sunlight, if he ever were to let them. Instead he is the one who lurks in the shadows, waiting for a time when he was needed. He is strong and resilient. Watching and waiting for a chance to better the world.

Every so often, he comes across a soul who is in dire need of someone to understand them, someone that they can turn to in times of great need. The Dragon had come across many souls like this in his never ending life span, never leaving them until their life force grew dim and they called upon him to ferry them to the other side.

He had no true mate, for each soul he chose to help usually chose a mate of their own and their mate was his. Oh true there were times when a soul he would share a vessel with would decide not to mate and for those the Dragon was sad that he could not help to the fullest. But he would be there for the soul.

The Dragon had known many types of humans. Most never really knew he was there, discounted him as the half of them that emerged to deal with pressure. But some were perceptive enough to realize what he actually was, and those who did, accepted him and even embraced him.

There was one soul in particular he knew he would never truly forget. He had been studying the soul, watching him and waiting for the perfect time to merge with the soul. He saw the horrific dreams, the troubling world the soul was in for in the future. It was one soul he didn't have to ponder over.

One night, during a truly horrible dream, the Dragon merged into the mind of the soul, interfering where he probably shouldn't have, yet he did it anyway. There were no set rules for the Dragon, no real wrong way to go about his job.

As soon as the Dragon settled in, he knew, this was the last soul he would ever choose, the last soul who would ever truly need his help. This one soul would mate to one who would accept the Dragon, know he was there and do his or her best to make him feel accepted.

The Dragon studied the life lines of the human, saw all that was to come his way and knew that one day he would be needed a great deal for much was to befall this one soul. The Dragon settled down in the back of the souls mind to wait. And there he slept, lying dormant until he was called upon once more.
