Guardians:

Chapter Eleven: Memories

Alyx buried his face in Sain's silver mane and took in her scent trying to calm himself enough to sleep. Sain was snoring softly beside him or actually, more of on top of him in the tiny bed of his quarters. He didn't complain, he was glad she was here even if his right arm was going numb.

Not three hours earlier he'd finished reading the file that General Black had given to him, it was interesting to say the least. There was an old abandoned factory that had apparently been garrisoned recently and used as either a staging ground for local attacks or a research facility for the uprising rebellion. It was heavily guarded and seemed nigh impregnable, but Alyx had a few ideas, he just wondered if the Guardians could manage them without any losses. Their raid was going to have to involve the entire Corps, all thirty of them, and even then they were outnumbered twenty-to-one easily.

Alyx had obsessed over the mission until Sain had come in and sat with him and listened as he explained it all to her. They'd sat for a while talking before their conversation turned erotic. He and Sain fooled around for around half an hour before it became apparent Alyx was just too nervous to hold an erection. So he'd ate Sain out and they'd both curled up together in his little bed leaving him where he was now, with his face pressed into her back trying to still his racing mind.

Having Sain with him had calmed him enough so he wasn't pacing around in his quarters endlessly, but he wished he could fall asleep he'd need to be on top of everything tomorrow. 'If I'm not careful this could be the last night me and Sain ever-No. I can't think like that.' He thought to himself and sighed quietly nuzzling Sain gently making her purr in her sleep. He smiled; at least he still had her now. The thought stilled his mind and the constant thrum of her purring eventually helped him slip into sleep his eyes closing and his breathing slowing.

. . .

Alyx crouched behind a low stone wall and peeked over, looking at the factory. It was immense, originally it had been a civilian jet airliner manufacturer but the invention of airships ruined mass transportation for jets. The building didn't look suspicious except for the occasional armed guard that strolled past on rounds. Alyx crouched back down and looked at Vance and Sain, the only two with him right now. Everyone else was interspersed around the building in groups of two or three, they were going to take the building from all directions and hopefully confound their enemies. Sain looked over and then quickly ducked back down she smiled softly.

"This shan't be hard." She whispered.

Alyx shook his head,

"Getting in won't be. Getting out will be."

Sain nodded and Vance crept over to be heard better,

"So all we're doing is coming in and killing whoever stands in our way and disposing of a bomb?"

Alyx nodded.

"Basically."

Vance grumbled softly,

"Just sounds too easy. And my fur is beginning to stand on end, something isn't right here."

Indeed the wolf's hackles were up making him look quite intimidating. Alyx shook his head again,

"Something isn't right; we'll have to stay on guard."

Vance nodded.

They sat back down again waiting for the rest of the Guardian Corps to get into position. Alyx checked his rifle; he'd left his FAL at his personal house and opted for a Kalashnikov style short assault rifle instead. The shorter barrel would be quite helpful inside the building. All of the GC's had silenced weapons for they were going to try to breach the building without alerting anyone. He checked to make sure the silencer was secured properly; it wouldn't do to crack or break it off his rifle because of cross-threading or insufficient tightening.

Alyx nearly jumped as Sain mentally poked him, he glanced over at her and saw she was doing the same thing he was so he opened himself to her,

~~You know this is going to be dangerous right?~~ He asked her softly

~~When is it not?~~

Alyx shrugged mentally before Sain continued.

~~I expect you to sleep with me again tonight you know. This time in a bigger bed, preferably my apartment. The ambiance is so much better there.~~

Alyx smiled,

~~Literally or...?~~

~~Both.~~

~~Ah,~~ Alyx chuckled softly, ~~I'll be there.~~

Vance looked up at Alyx,

"What's so funny?"

"Hmm?" Alyx looked over at him and realized the wolf hadn't heard their mental exchange, "Oh, uh... Life?"

Vance shook his head and rolled his eyes,

"Whatever."

"Well it is!"

"Mm-hm."

Alyx shrugged and peeked over the low wall again to watch as another guard walked by. His headset came on,

"Everyone's in place sir." Gleets voice sounded in his right ear. "Shall we get this show on the road?"

Alyx gave the affirmative and nodded to Sain and Vance, before they each slunk over the wall and began to creep towards the building. The early morning fog helped keep them hidden and the dew-wet grass underfoot stifled their footfalls, overall their approach was flawless. As the got up to the door in the building they were going to breach it swung open and another guard sauntered out. The man looked shocked and opened his mouth to yell but Vance was upon him before he could. Vance made one clean slash through the man's neck with his knife; the guard fell to the ground as silently as they'd snuck up. Alyx nodded thanks to Vance as he was cleaning off his knife.

"You owe me a coffee." The wolf whispered, "And not a cheap one either."

Alyx stifled a laugh and looked down the corridor the guard had come out of; no one was in sight so he crept forwards into the building. He glanced behind and nodded to himself as Sain pulled the guard's body into a ditch so nobody would notice it. They crept down the hallway silently listening for any activity and checking each room before moving on. Alyx felt something tug on his foot and suddenly Vance tackled him shouting, "MOVE!" before the hallway flared bright with a muffled 'thwump' as the corridor blew open. Alyx stood back up and groaned cracking his wing joints and nodded to Vance in thanks before inspecting the hallway behind them. A twenty foot section was scorched black from an explosion the cement cracked and pulling free now. Sain wasn't to be seen though.

"Sain?" Alyx flipped his COM on, "Sain!"

A door farther up the hallway opened and Vance and Alyx spun leveling their weapons. Sain stepped out and raised her now bloody hands,

"What I do?" She noticed the hallway, "What'd you do!?"

Alyx sighed and lowered his rifle,

"Tripwire."

Sain nodded,

"Well there was a room full of sleeping dudes..." She looked at her bloody arms and then at the door she'd come through, "...Emphasis on was."

They started to move down the hallway again, a guard stepped around the corner and began to shoot at them before Sain shot him in the head twice and he fell to the ground,

"Well if the tripwire didn't tell them we're here that did."

Alyx nodded and un-screwed his silencer from his rifle; the less length the better.

"Then let's take 'em fast and hard."

From there the fighting became a bit of a blur, they moved through the building meeting a little more and more resistance as they got closer to the center, most of the guard seemed to know they were coming and manage to pull a few shots off before one of the three took them down. Their armor was dented and scratched and they all felt a little bruised from the few lucky shots that had hit them. They came to an area that split off into three sections Alyx looked down each of them.

"I think we should split up..." He glanced at the other two, "I don't want the enemy crawling up our asses."

The other two nodded before Vance spoke up, "Set your vital systems on so we'll know if someone goes down."

Gleets came on the radio,

"I'm setting them all on dude."

Alyx jumped a little and then chuckled shaking his head, it was easy to forget there was an entire task force inside the building with him even though he didn't see any bit of them. He nodded to Sain and Vance and started down the right-most corridor. The décor seemed to change dramatically down the corridor, the cement floors gave way to wood and the walls were now painted a very clean white. He also didn't meet any guards which both puzzled and worried Alyx.

He went around a corner and stumbled to a halt having come quite suddenly into a room. There was one man in the room with him with a massive revolver, before Alyx could react the man fired three shots, all three hit Alyx's rifle, the first throwing it away from him and the other two ruining the weapon. The man lowered his revolver and smiled icily, He was dressed completely in white, save a scarlet red tie tucked into his waistcoat. The man drew a wicked looking broadsword and dropped into a battle stance,

"Really?" Alyx rolled his eyes and started to draw his pistol out, but in a blur of motion the man had fired two more shots at him and disabled his 1911 also. Alyx gulped and glanced around for a weapon he could use. A katana was leaning against the wall next to him. He sighed in exasperation and picked it up.

"A duel? Honestly!? Who the hell do you think you are?"

The man smiled,

"I am your worst nightmare, Alyx... But, I'd rather kill you in a fairer match than with my pistol." He pointed his broadsword at Alyx, "You know, you are a blithering idiot right?"

"Wha-"

"SILENCE! I'm not done talking." Alyx slashed at the man with his katana and yelped as he was deflected and rapped across the knuckles. "Rude. Rude, and more rude." The man narrowed his eyes, "Let me speak. Honestly you evolutionaries are more beast than human. No manners at all!" He cleared his throat, "Now then. You are a blithering idiot. Why? Because you actually followed Black's orders and came out here. Surely you realized it was a trap?" He paused and raised an eyebrow at Alyx, "Well?"

"Uh-uhm..." Alyx stuttered for a moment trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with this man as he tried to circle around him, "It was obvious that something was up."

"Indeed! Do you know why we've sent you into this trap? No I'm sure not! Well!" The man waved his sword turning to keep his sword between him and Alyx, "I'll at least tell you why before I kill you. The... Guardians..." He paused with a distasteful expression, "Was actually a project to find a way to completely annihilate you abominations from the face of the planet. And you know what I mean by abomination, dragon... Yes, I know the dragons are not evolutionaries. Evolutionaries are marvels of science..." He paused, "The beautiful creation of man! But you... YOU! You and your entire race are the spawn of hell itself sent here by whatever heathen god to destroy everything man has worked for." He laughed, "Honestly, you fools are easy to control, as careful as you draconians guard your secrets, all it took was to kill a bitch and raise her hatchlings to an old enough age for their ancestral memories to surface. You're 'magicks'... They are you're undoing..." He cackled madly, "A simple airborne disease, and a single ritual and your entire race will be gone!" He stopped laughing and suddenly fell silent before whispering, "I want to kill all of you SCUM!" He swung his sword hard at Alyx, Alyx's hand seemed to come up on its own accord and deflect the man's wild slash, he ducked and rolled ,to one side and sprung back up slashing his katana at the man's neck.

The man ducked and dodged the blow easily and hit Alyx in the side with his broadsword with a ringing noise it bounced of Alyx's Kevlar vest,

"I thought you be harder to kill than this, demon. Or shall I call you 'The Entity'!?" Alyx paused for a second, "Yes I know what you are, even if you can't remember properly. That serum we gave you to tell us everything you knew and erase your memories seemed to work pretty well." The man laughed and jumped back as Alyx swung at him again. "Oooh, your mother would be so proud! Oh wait, YOU DON'T REMEMBER!" The man laughed and jumped throwing himself at Alyx in a mad flurry of blows, then staggered, his face growing pale.

The man looked down at the Katana stabbed through his chest,

"What? How?" He looked up, "You surely can't remember how to handle a blade..." The man looked into Alyx's icy eyes, "I see... So it's coming back..." The man tried to suck in a breath and let out a pained cry, "I'd ask for forgiveness... But not from a demon!" He fell to the floor as his face went slack and his blood continued to pool around him.

Alyx put a hand to his face a flurry of random memories coming back not one of them making sense. A castle, a sword, a king and an assassin... Blood, revenge, and sorrow. He shook his head to clear it and looked around for a weapon, not finding one he sighed and pulled his knife from his vest and moved through the door the man had been in front of. He opened it silently and crept out back into a concrete corridor. He jumped as Vance tapped him on the shoulder.

"What the hell dude!?" He spun around, "Don't do tha-" He paused and looked at Vance who was coated in... Something, "What happened to you."

Vance shrugged, "I think this is a laboratory... I had to kill a giant cricket..." He shivered, "Disgusting... I'd have never guessed they were carnivorous... Seen Sain yet?"

"No I had a sword duel with some guy..." Alyx flinched as another flurry of memories presented themselves to him. JFK, the US satellite surveillance systems going online, necessity of hiding. Bars, a bad drinking habit, mafia... He shook his head, "I think he's done something to my head."

Vance looked at him in an odd manner for a second,

"Your head looks alright to me. Except," He reached out a hand and touched one of the smaller horns on Alyx's face making him flinch, "This one's fractured."

Alyx laughed and swatted away Vance's hand,

"You know what I mea-" He staggered, The first evolutionary war, Submarines, Chains, Explosions everywhere, screaming. He grabbed his head and went down on one knee, "My God."

Vance looked concernedly down at him,

"Do you think you can finish this mission?"

Alyx stood upright and swayed a little,

"Maybe... I don't' think we have much of a choice though." He groaned, "Urg, let's keep moving."

Him and Vance moved down the hall listened for footsteps or breathing. From the map Alyx had looked at they were only a few hundred feet from the main manufacturing area, which is where all of the Guardians were supposed to end up together.

"Gleets, how many of us are almost or in the target room?" Alyx asked on his COMs.

They kept walking until they came to a door with a window. Vance looked through it cautiously.

"Gleets?" Alyx cursed, and flipped his coms to broadcast for any of the remaining Guardians,

"Alyx reporting, I need a sound off."

There was a silence for a moment,

"This is Swanson, I'm here."

"Ruze, likewise."

"Rex, I'm good."

"Duke, I'm a little fucked up here. They've got-" His radio went dead.

Alyx spat out another curse,

"Is that all? Just you three?"

There were footsteps behind them and Alyx and Vance spun around rifles ready.

"Yeah, I guess." Swanson replied walking from around the corner with Ruze and Rex with him.

Alyx lowered his rifle.

"What the fuck happened to everyone else?"

Rex and Swanson shrugged. Ruze sat down on the ground hard.

"My team was shredded." Ruze shivered, "Literally..." She put her head in her hands.

Alyx's COM came on,

"Hey, It's Greg. I'm okay, but Duke's been hit with a kinetic round, he's pretty fucked up. Imma pull him out and come back"

Alyx put his hand to his coms,

"Alright but check on Gleets before you come back. I can't get a hold of him."

"Roger."

Alyx looked at the five of them and flinched another flurry of memories presenting themselves, he ignored them as best he could.

"Well it seems we're about all that's left now." He sighed, "We're probably outnumbered fifty to one beyond this door. Are you guys ready?"

Everyone nodded and they all stood and checked their rifles and lined up to breach the door. Alyx kicked it open and ran inside finding cover quickly. The rest of the team followed and each found something to hide behind. Alyx looked over the crate he was behind. There were several large machines inside the room, as well as a tank or two, but no people. He stood slowly, and looked around expecting a sniper at least. He crept forward into the center of the room and stood up fully.

"The hell is this?"

An explosion rang forth from under his feet the entire room lighting up in an orange and yellow world seemed to be tearing itself glow. The room seemed to tear itself apart and throw Alyx in all directions before he blacked out.

(xP Well here's the next chapter. It's real slow going, but life is getting better so maybe mah block will disappear soonish. There's at least two more chapters left, (At most five.) As a warning this story has a sad ending, but don't bash it because there is a second series that might fix it. Anyhoo, Peace!
