Chapter 2: The Checkpoint Bridge

Allen tapped his toe impatiently against the stone wall of the small bridge, the sounds of the creek rushing by drowned out the echo of each tap as the moon rose to it's peak directly overhead. He was late.

The husky raised his paw and gave his watch a glance, 12:11.

"I'm giving him 10 more minutes, then I'm gone."

Allen sighed lazily and stood up straight from his leaning stance against the stone. His broad shoulders and toned muscle shown well through his gray furred chest, which was covered only by a black t-shirt that had been torn to nothing but shreds, abused by the many exhausting hours of cross-country training, and countless knee-scraping, nose bleeding, and ball busting games of football with friends. He was built, no doubt about it, and during the school year, all the popular bitches swarmed him, constantly trying to get a date or some "quality time" in the restroom between classes. All the while, the less popular of the females watched him from afar, secretly admiring his washboard abs and well-developed biceps. To the ladies, he was perfection, but to Allen, they meant nothing. He'd already given the key to his heart and body to another, and he was not ashamed of it, nor did he regret it.

Allen shoved his paw into his jeans pocket and fiddled with his car keys. David was very punctual, never late, no matter the circumstances, and the fact that he was now 15 minutes behind schedule was wearing on the worry nerve.

It had been Wednesday afternoon that Allen had gotten the phone call from David. Though his request wasn't unusual, the time was. Midnight wasn't exactly the best time to be out driving friends around, but Allen had agreed anyway. David was a good friend, they'd been through a lot together, and he was willing to sacrifice a few hours away from Zack, his mate-to-be, to do David this one favor. Besides, Allen knew about all the shit David took from his parents, and he knew that they wouldn't understand if he'd tried to reason with them about going to his boyfriend's for a day or two, much less an entire week.

A small sequence of splashing footsteps echoed from underneath the bridge behind Allen, breaking his train of thought. He instantly whirled around in time to see David emerging from the dark tunnel of the bridge, his fur matted down with water and mud, it looked like he'd been to hell and back.

"It's about damn time David! You're lat- Jesus, what happened to you?"

"Sorry, I got held up, the trip through the woods isn't a cake walk you know. Is everything clear on Kyle's end?? And you? Did you make it okay?"

"Zack didn't like me leaving this late, but when he heard I was doing it for you, he didn't mind as much, and Kyle is cleared. His dad is out of town on business, and his mom is staying with her sister for the week, he's alone. Did you make it out alright?"

"My sister caught me, but I dodged her, no problems, and I tripped and fell a few times in the woods.

"Yeah, that's painfully obvious, you look like hell. Anyway, hurry up and get in, Kyle is expecting us at 1 am sharp, and in case you haven't noticed, I haven't slept in about 2 days, and when I'm tired, I don't drive well. So we need to hurry."

"Well dammit Allen, don't stay up so freaking late! If you'd sleep during the night like norma-

"Hey! The night is Zack's play time, and you're damn lucky he let me come to help you, he had plans, and I'm missing out for you!"

"Ok ok, I'm sorry, don't get your underwear in a twist."

Allen scowled, turning around to jump a small offshoot of the creek bed, David on his heels. From the edge of the water, Allen's rusty old car could be seen in the distance in a clearing near the forest, and both the husky and wolf jumped each of the tree roots, ledges and small creek offshoots like they knew the terrain as if it were the back of their own paws. And they did know it. After all, David, Allen, and a few others often held gatherings with friends at the old stone bridge. It was a great place to socialize, lots of room to sit, the bridge provided cover, and the creek was just deep enough for the occasional dip in the clean, clear water to cool off, with or without clothes on. After a while of getting to know the area better, the group had dubbed the territory "Checkpoint Bridge" merely because it was the checkpoint marker for the many street races held by the local jocks and mechanics who were caught up in the thrill of the race.

Allen stopped near the passenger door of the car, David already swinging it open and throwing his wet duffel bag into the back seat, and dug in his pocket, pulling a small ring of car keys and a silver cell phone from inside. He tossed the keys to David who was already sitting in the car, and then took a few steps away, flipping the phone open before punching a few numbers and hitting the send key.

After a few rings, a male, around age 16 answered the phone, his tone cracking a little out of sheer anxiety.

"Hello?"

"Kyle, it's Allen. Everything all right?"

Allen's tone was concerned, though he already knew the answer to such a foolish question.

"Besides the fact that I'm waiting for both of you, worried as hell, and nervous as hell, I'm great. Did everything go as planned?"

"Yeah, David's waiting in the car, we're off schedule because your lover was a tad late getting here, but no problems otherwise. We should be there in 20 minutes, but do me a favor and call Zack, I'm tired and wont be able to make the drive back to town, I'll have to crash in your basement if you don't care."

"No problem. Let me handle Zack. You just get your asses down here before I worry myself into a frenzy."

"Heh, ok, will do. Seeya in 20," and with that, Allen flipped the phone shut and turned back toward the car, seeing David peeking his head through the window, trying to listen in.

Allen rolled his eyes and smiled before starting for the driver's door, replacing the phone back into his pocket.

"It looks like you and Kyle's first night won't be to yourself. I'm crashing in the basement. I can't make the drive back, so sorry you can't fuck tonight."

Allen chuckled and plopped into the driver's seat, closing the door behind him before turning to David, who wasn't amused.

"Oh you're a real comedian. We'd fuck if you were there are not, but lucky for you, I don't plan to tonight, just being with him is all I need. So save your jokes smart ass."

Allen's grin faded to a smile and he turned the key in the ignition, the engine roaring to life. He may give David a lot of shit, but he knew David was truly in love, like Allen himself felt, and he was happy for him.

"You'll make a loving mate to Kyle one day David, I hope you know that."

With that, they both smiled and a small stomp on the gas pedal lead the car from the field clearing to the dusty gravel road that would take them into the hilly countryside.
