EDIT: 03/20/2012

WARNING!!! This is a retelling of the Garden of Eden story combining Jewish lore with my own creations to do my own version of "Paradise Lost." If you are offended by controversial religious ideas or thinking ... then you should probably grow up, step outside of your comfort zone, and try to enjoy yourself.

The woman returned to the place where she and her husband had made a home. Her heart beat fast with the day's excitement, and she could not wait to tell him all about her adventures. But this day, her husband was not near their favorite tree, and she could not feel his presence in her soul.

"Adam?" she called softly, and when there was no response she called for him more loudly.

"I am here, Lilith," his voice finally told her in response. The sound took her to a lesser tree where the first man's glory lay diminished upon the ground; and though the woman's spirit sored when she saw him, she could not feel the normal radiance of his aura.

"Adam," the woman gasped when she found him and fell to her knees at his side. "Are you well? What has happened? Why are you like this?" As she pressed herself up against him, she could feel that he was lacking in fire, and although she had never before encountered illness, she instinctively knew it must be so. "You are unwell."

"I am betrayed," he told her bitterly.

"Who has betrayed you?" Lilith asked.

"Do not play coy!" Adam growled at her. "You denied me once and it has afflicted me!"

"Adam," she told him gently as she placed her hand upon his handsome face, "you wanted to dominate me. I told you, we are equal, and thus we should be equal in love. In that most sacred act, one should never dominate the other."

"You denied me!" Adam shouted as he batted her hand away. Rolling away from her, the first man stood and began a form of agitated pacing the first woman had never seen from her husband. "I came to you and you turned me away! It should not be so! It should never be so ... so sayeth our Father."

"Father ... told you ..." suddenly the words of Anguis hissed softly in her mind. "What did Father tell you?" Lilith's limbs crackled with the cooling edges of fear when Adam turned to face her. In the eyes of her one and only was hurt and pain ... and no love. This lack of love stabbed into her in a way she could never have imagined.

"He told me that a wife is to obey her husband. He told me that a wife is to raise his children. He told me a wife is to receive her husband gladly, and always leave him fulfilled." Adam's words fell like hail and bloodied the previously unmarred surface of Lilith's heart. Never before had she experienced pain like this. It did not seem possible. It was not right. It was not fair. Adam was her husband and he should not be speaking to her in this manner.

"Adam?" Lilith spoke hoarsely with tears forming in her eyes. "What happened to my Adam? Where is your love? Why are you like this?"

"You rejected me!" he cried out, and when she reached out to him again, his hand snatched her wrist. "Now you will submit!" In the moments between his touching her and him forcing her to the ground, Lilith's soul mixed with his and she knew. The first man straddled the first woman, pinning her to the ground with his great strength, and she looked up into his wrathful eyes.

"You ate from the tree," she said aloud, and, for a moment, he froze. "You ate the forbidden fruit."

"Father ... brought it to me," Adam said, suddenly ashamed.

"He stole away your love," Lilith wept, her body refusing to fight against his.

"He opened my eyes," Adam insisted as his tears fell upon her skin. "He showed me the truth!"

"He showed you a lie," Lilith told him gently. "He is not our true father ... and He wants our power for himself."

"You lie!" Adam gasped, and Lilith could see him fighting the madness in his mind.

"Adam," the woman said to the man, "I love you. I could never stop loving you. Nothing you say ... nothing you do ... nothing will ever change that."

"Lilith," Adam said as if waking from a dream, "I'm sorry, Love ... I ... I ..."

Lilith could see he was fighting it. There was love still within her husband that their false father had not taken and it was fighting to regain control. As Adam struggled with himself, Lilith slipped her arms from his grasp, wrapped them around his thick frame, and pulled him close to her. "I love you Adam," she cried in his ear. "I love you! I love you! I love you! I love you!" She repeated the words again and again as her tears streaked down her face. With her powers she reached out to him, and she could feel the poison that coursed through his veins. With her love she climbed inside and swept his mind free of the poisoned fruit.

"Lilith ... run," Adam gasped and he forced himself back away from her. "I ... I can't control it!"

"Adam-" she called to him, as she rose to her feet, but the light of their false father suddenly sparked in his eyes, causing her to pause.

"Damn you, woman!" Adam growled as his wrath returned. "I'll force you under!"

Without thought or knowhow, Lilith opened her mouth, and from her soul, spoke words of sacred power. The force of it knocked Adam into the body of their favored tree. The first man then climbed back to his feet and rushed blindly at his wife. Again she spoke the words, but this time Adam's body destroyed the tree when he struck it. The bones of his body broke as he tumbled along the ground, and when at last he stopped, he failed to rise. The energy of the moment crackled around the first woman and then she returned to herself.

"No," Lilith uttered, and stumbling forward, she fell to her knees before her husband. "No, no, no, no, nooo!!!" Gathering Adam's broken body in her arms, she felt the death upon him. Agony's first screams rose up in her body and she howled the lament of her broken heart. In the wake of her grief her powers went wild. The grasses burned and the trees were torn from their roots. Animals fled from her fury, all except for one who used the words of sacred wisdom to weather the maelstrom.

"Calm ... calm ..." hissed the serpent until Lilith's storm finally withered. "Wise Lilith, your power can heal him. Focus on his body, mend his bones, and bring the energy of his soul back into this shell." Bewildered, Lilith obeyed. Gathering her love for her dear Adam, she repaired the damage inflicted by their battle; shifting the pieces of his anatomy back into place and forcing his heart to beat once more. "Now first one, find the essence of him and return it to his corpus."

Once again Lilith reached out with her powers and as she found the fragments of his soul, she gathered up the pieces and bade them to return. But not all of them would slide back into place, and in haste, she drew them into her own body, impregnating herself with the best parts of him that refused to go back.

"Lilith," Anguis said softly after they sat in silence for a long time.

"I cannot remove the poison," she said softly, the heavy weight of this truth pressing in around her.

"The poison can only be removed by the ones who put it there," the serpent said. "From this day forth ... he will be your enemy."

"Then he will forget all about me," Lilith said to her friend. "What we have done here cannot be undone."

"This was not your fault," Anguis said soothingly.

"It does not matter," Lilith told him sadly. "The spark of his essence is too damaged to be as he was. Our false father has won this part of us ... but he cannot have that piece of me."

"He will never let you go," Anguis said in a cautioning tone.

"I know," Lilith said with a shudder of dread. "I must leave Adam here and flee the garden."

"Man will be lost without you," Anguis said in a cold tone. "It is not good that the man should be alone."

"Then I shall make another wife for him, so that precious Adam will not be alone." Reaching through his flesh, the first woman drew forth one of her husband's ribs, and closed up the flesh.

From this rib She worked. Knowing only Her own image, Lilith fashioned another wife for her husband, but this one would submit ... this one would yield where She could not.

When She finished, Lilith looked upon Her first daughter, and decided Her work was good. Then She breathed into her nostrils the breath of life; and in her formed a living soul.

"Mother?" was the second woman's first word.

"I am here, child," Lilith said as she embraced the younger woman.

"Who is that man?" the new life wanted to know.

"He is your husband," Lilith said to her daughter, as she bound tight the pain in her heart. "You will keep him happy, all the days of his life."

"I shall keep him happy," the daughter agreed obediently, already demonstrating her meeker nature.

"As Adam and I were made in the morning," Lilith continued, "you were made in the evening. Thus, your name shall be Eve, and this man will find you more precious than any other." Lilith closed her eyes as she said these words, and called upon her powers to weave the first threads of fate upon these two; binding them together for all eternity.

"This is all so beautiful, Mother," Eve said to her mother.

"It is beauty which Adam will desire of you," Lilith told her first daughter. "But he will also need temperance and wisdom from you, for these things were lost when his soul was shattered, and it is from those fragmented pieces which I made you. Be wary of his pride, Eve, for if he discovers how much he must rely upon you, then he is likely to hold you in contempt."

"I will do all that I can for him, Mother," Eve said, and then mother and daughter shared an identical smile.

"You will not see me again in this life," Lilith finally said, "and you must not speak of me to your husband. But know that your mother loves you, and nothing will ever change that."

"I love you too, Mother," Eve told her ... and with that, Lilith used her magic to grow wings, and flew from the Garden of Eden ... never to return.
