The Adventures of Nall Wolf

Chapter 2: The Awakening

Nall woke up to the song "Aerials" by System of a Down. He checked the time on his Blackberry. 8:00 AM... "Why do I even check anymore?" he grumbled while slipping out of bed. He slipped his shorts on and headed for the bathroom. He returned to his room after using the bathroom and brushing his teeth to find"Almost" by Bowling for Soup playing. He was in a decent mood today, so he turned it up and sang along while surfing the net and chatting over IRC.

Before long, it was 10:30 AM. He checked the weather. "Wow... It's already 55F." he said aloud with a grin and a wagging tail, talking to himself yet again. "I think I'll go for an early walk today." He threw on some pants, a shirt, his wristband, and grabbed his Blackberry and PSP Go with headphones. He shut off the music coming from his sound system and started playing "All Hail the Heartbreaker" by The Spill Canvas through his headphones.

Nall walked into the front room, grabbed his jacket, and swung it around to put it on. Before he got the second arm in, he heard something hit the ground and break. It was one of Mom's knick-knacks, one made of glass that looked like a heart sitting on top of some grass that was sprouting out of the base. The heart was no longer attached to the grass...

"Damn it..." He had a look of annoyance on his face and knew something needed to be done now if he didn't want to get yelled at later, so he took his jacket back off, gathered the pieces, and headed for the dining room to look for the super glue. The glue wasn't in its usual spot, so he started looking on random shelves and in drawers. He opened up one of the drawers of a china cabinet and started digging, only to find not the glue, but something a bit more interesting.

"Oh wow! An M80!" He hadn't seen one of those in a few years, which is probably how long this one had been sitting in its tomb of a drawer. "I'll save this for later..." He slipped it in his pocket and continued his search.

He finally found the super glue after 45 minutes of searching, and it took him another 15 to get the glass heart re-attached properly. After that ordeal, he started thinking about the M80 in his pocket.

"I wonder if it's still good." He thought about where he could set it off at. The road in front of his house would work, but what would be the fun in that? Then it hit him - the ditch was empty yesterday. Those big culverts were calling to him; he knew they'd help magnify the sound of the boom. He quickly grabbed a lighter and his jacket and ran out the door toward the ditch.

As soon as he got there, he realized that he had forgotten his phone and music player back at home. "Oh well." he thought as he carefully found a path down to one of the big metal cylinders that ran under the road. He perched himself on the top of the middle one and peeked in; there was no water to be seen inside.

He pulled the M80 and lighter out of his pocket. "Well, here we go..." He lit it and threw it in the culvert. The resulting BOOM was louder than he thought it would be and caught him off guard. He yelped and scrambled to regain his balance, but it was no use. He landed on his back with a sickening squelch in the rocky mud below and blacked out.

Nall awoke about 10 minutes later with a headache. He looked up to see an old hyena standing on the road with a bemused expression. It was his next-door neighbor, Huck. He worked at the farm place that was next to the ditch and heard the boom.

"What the hell happened to you? Blow yourself up?" said a chuckling Huck.

"Shut up and help me get out of this ditch..." Nall said, annoyed.

"You're on your own with that one, I'm not about to get all muddy because of you."

Nall growled a little as Huck walked off, he was always so annoying. Nall got up, shook some of the mud off, and started looking for the easiest way back up to the road. He found a good path and got up it with ease, it was almost too easy. He decided to head home and take a nice warm shower after some Advil for the headache. As he walked home, it seemed like he was lighter somehow, like it was a lot easier to walk. He chalked it up as a side effect of hitting his head and continued on.

He stripped down as soon as he got home and placed his clothes in a trash bag to keep the mud from getting on everything. Then he took a couple Advil, grabbed his phone to play music during the shower, and headed for the bathroom. He started the music then stepped into the shower to wash the mud off his fur.

After he was all clean, he still had the headache, so he headed to his room to lay down with some quiet music. He napped until dinner, after which he was griped at for the muddy clothing in the bag. The rest of the night was spent surfing the web and stress testing the 360s he had fixed yesterday. He played "Anywhere But Here" by Mayday Parade before getting into bed, just like every other night.
