"Fucking fag!"

That was all Mike heard as he was kicked again and again. He curled into a ball and covered his head with his hands. "Go to hell!" He lay there defenseless for what seemed to him like an eternity, crying and hoping for it to stop. Finally, it ended and he heard the sound of footsteps quickly fading away. He sat up and dried his eyes, sniffling. "Are you ok?" he heard a voice say. He looked up to see his teacher, Mr. Kang. "I'm fine" he said as he stood up, then gripped his side in pain and grimaced. "Let me take you home" Mr. Kang said as he laid his hand on his shoulder. Mike shrugged it off "I said I'm fine." "How far do you live?" "Only a few blocks" he responded, beginning to walk away "You consider ten blocks a few?" Mike stopped and turned to his teacher. "I...." he couldn't finish his sentence. He fell to the ground, crying again. Mr. Kang rushed over and kneeled down beside him, once again placing his hand on his shoulder. "Is there a reason they attacked you?" Mike stopped crying and only responded "Because they're assholes!"

"You and I both know there's more to it then that." He sat there, wondering if he should tell his teacher-one he never liked- the truth. "It's because.....because I'm ...gay..." he finally said, turning away. "There isn't many people who know, I only told my friends-the only two people in this world that I trust, but somehow those damn hyenas found out!" then he was caught off guard when he felt his teacher hugging him. The little wolf didn't know how to respond with his vulpine teacher hugging him. "M- Mr. Kang?" "I just thought you needed a hug to calm you down, you are pretty upset" he responded, letting go. Mike blushed "T-thanks." He watched as his teacher stood up and held out his hand. "C'mon, I'll take you home" The young canine grabbed his hand and stood up. He followed his teacher - his now favorite teacher- to his car. "Thanks Mr. Kang" he said as he got in. "Outside of school, call me Daniel." He responded, smiling "o-ok" Why is he being so nice? He thought to himself. He felt uncomfortable in a teacher's presence outside of class. "Do your parents know?" "No! Of course not! I can't let them know!" he practically screamed Daniel smiled again "You don't have to yell" "Sorry" Mike said, blushing once more. "This isn't the first time they attacked you, is it?" The young wolf bit his lip. _Could I tell my teacher about my life? No, he's a teacher; what could he possibly know about this situation...then again....he seems to be the only one who cares. Maybe I can trust him. _He opened his mouth, but he couldn't make any words come out. He just shook his head. "How many other times has this happened?" He hesitated "....more then four" "And you never told anyone?!" The vulpine asked in a semi-angry tone. "I have no one to tell..." The canid answered in a melancholy tone, turning toward the window and watched the trees endlessly pass by. "You said you told your friends you were gay, but you can't tell them you're being attacked?" "That wouldn't do any good" "Wouldn't do any good? Friends are there to comfort you and help you in times of need" Mike looked at him angrily now "How could they help if they have no idea what it feels like?!" His teacher couldn't answer that. Mike went on, "They can't help if they don't know what it's like to be gay and not being able to tell their own family for fear of disownment or being beat. They can't help if they have no clue what its like to be discriminated against just because they're different; because they want to be true to themselves, but can't because...because..." He turned toward the window again, holding back more tears. They sat in silence until they reached the young wolf's house. Mike grabbed the handle, looking at his house. "Thanks for the ride Mr. K- err... Daniel" he opened the door and was about to step out. "You don't like it here do you?" Mike shook his head slowly. "Why?" "Because all they do is talk about how much this country has 'lost it's Christian morals', which involves condemning gays." He responded, not turning around. "You wish you could leave, find a place more...accepting?" The wolf's grip tightened in his book bag as he nodded. "Would your parents care if you didn't come home?" Mike look at him confused. "What are trying to ask?" The fox sighed "If your parents wouldn't care, why don't you spend the night at my house? I can promise I won't rant on about religion or gays. And if they ask, I can get you to school on time." Mike looked at his book bag, then the house. "I'll need to get some clothes" "Take as much time as you need" The wolf ran it, up to his room and threw his bag onto the bed. He grabbed a duffle bag and threw in a t-shirt and shirts to sleep in, shirt, jeans, socks, and underwear. He zipped it up, then looked at his journal and threw that in as well. He looked at the window and saw Daniel grading papers and he smiled. "He really does care" his smile then faded into a questioning look "But why?" He carried his bag into the kitchen, grabbed a pencil and a piece of paper and wrote a quick note to his parents:

Mom and dad,

I'm spending the night at Chris's house so we can work on a project. I'll take a shower so don't worry. I'll be back home tomorrow after school.

Love, Mike

He looked at how he signed it. 'Love'? He erased it and substituted it with 'signed'. He ran out he door and put his bag in the back seat, then climbed in the front. "That didn't take long, ready?" Daniel asked Mike nodded "Yeah." It was a long, silent ride to Mr. Kang's house, except the music playing from the radio turned low. They pulled into the driveway and Mike stared at the house. "You live here?" The vulpine turned off the car and got out. "Yeah, what's wrong with it?" Mike grabbed his bag "Nothing, it's just, I've seen this house and loved it, but never knew who lived here, never thought it would be a teacher." "Well, a lot of teachers don't have as much money as I do" "Why not?" "Because they're married and I'm not. Heh" The wolf couldn't help but smile. Daniel opened the door and held it. "Come in" Mike walked in "It's even nicer inside." He watched his teacher put down his suitcase and head upstairs. "Make yourself at home, I'll be right down" He called Mike set down his bag next to the couch, where he figured he'd be sleeping, and sat down. "Big screen TV!" he said as he grabbed the remote and started flipping through the channels. After a couple of minutes, the fox returned in a new outfit. Mike just looked at him "What's wrong?" "Just not used to seeing you in jeans and a t-shirt; I always see you in a shirt and tie." "You didn't think I stayed like that all day, did you?" "Never thought about it." He took a seat next to his student. "You know what I remembered?" "What? You need to pay some bills?" "No, there's no school tomorrow. So, do you want to go home tomorrow, or call to ask to stay an extra night?" Mike thought about the offer. I really don't want to go home, but I don't want to bother Mr.... Daniel. "Can I give my answer tomorrow?" "Sure, not a problem." "You have a really nice place here. I wouldn't mind living here" "I love living here, its peaceful." He opened a drawer in the coffee table and handed Mike a controller. "Do you like Mortal Kombat?" The wolf's ears perked up and he smiled as he grabbed the controller. "I'll kick your ass in this game!" Then, realizing what he said, looked at his teacher who was laughing. "I can't give you detention outside of school for swearing." "Does that mean it's ok if I do?" "It means try to control it, but I understand it might slip out." Mike smiled again as the character selection screen came up.

The two canines spent the rest of the evening challenging each other form everything from fighting games, to racing games and puzzle and trivia games. They found that they were pretty evenly matched. This was the best time either had in a long time. Mike put down the controller after hours of playing against the last person he'd every think he'd like hanging out with- his teacher. "Didn't know you played video games." "You seem to think that teachers have no life outside of teaching." "Doesn't every kid?" "Well, you're a sophomore; you're not a kid, your-" "-a young adult" Mike finished his statement. The fox smiled "Right." He looked at the clock "It's already past midnight, I think we should head for bed" Mike just nodded and laid on the couch. "Why don't you use the guest room? I'm sure it's much more comfortable." "Oh" Mike blushed as he got up, grabbed his bag, and followed his host upstairs to the spare room. He walked in and dropped his bag next to the bed and laid down and covered himself. "Need anything else?" Daniel asked "No, I'm fine" He responded "And thanks, for everything." The fox walked over and kissed his student on the forehead "I'm here to help" and with that, he walked out of the room. Mike lay there, looking at the ceiling. I've been here one day. One day, and I feel more at home then with my parents...why? He finally closed his eyes and let his dreams engulf him in the best sleep he's had in a long time.
