The Lonely Dog Who Did Not Know

There was a puppy named Lucky. He loved the outdoors, especially winter because of the fluffy snow. One day he went on a small walk outside while his masters were at work. He went his usual route through the thick forest, ignoring that is was starting to snow. It was light snow fall so he wasn't too worried. About an hour into his walk it started to snow more, he took the advantage of having fun in the snow. Rolling, eating, and jumping in the snow. When he finally stopped to rest he realized that he was lost and didn't know where he was. He tried to sniff his way back, but it was snowing too hard to get a scent. Little did he know that there will be a blizzard followed by a rapid drop in temperature. He wasn't going to give up this easily. He tried desperately to find his way back. The more he tried the further he got off course; soon he will be miles away from his warm, cozy home.

After hours of trying to find his way back he gave up and decided to lie in the snow thinking about what he has done. His owners just came and were expecting Lucky to greet them, but he wasn't there. The owners called out for him and searched everywhere, inside and outside of the house. When they could not find him anywhere they went out into the forest in search of him. After an hour of searching, and darkness setting in, they decided to turn around and go back home.

The temperature started to drop and the snow started to pick up.

"I better find some shelter before I freeze to death" said Lucky

Twenty minutes into the search for a shelter to hunker down in, he finally found one that was suitable enough to keep him warm though out the night. The downfall was that there was a bear hibernating in the cave. He took his chances and went to sleep with the bear. After an hour, he finally fell asleep due to exhaustion.

When he woke up the next morning the first thing he heard was his stomach scream for food, then the calmness of the forest, and the birds chirping. This is the reason why he loved the outdoors so much. After a good five minutes of listening he slid outside to see where he was. He was in the middle of nowhere. Nothing looked familiar. The snow has covered up his paw prints and made it more difficult to see which way he came from due to the change in landscape. He tried to retrace his steps but couldn't.

He could not think straight due to the lack of nutrients in his body. He was starting to face the harsh reality that he may never see his loving family again, and die in this God-forsaken place.

Lucky thought to himself that there could be a potential food and water source nearby, since the bear was here, it had to be a couple miles up.

As Lucky was getting closer he heard a waterfall, he ran full speed toward it, looking everywhere, trying to find it. He made a fatal mistake of not looking where he was going and tripped. He went tumbling down the steep cliff. As he tumbled, he was faced with jagged rocks that tore him to shreds. After the fall, Lucky was lying on the ground. His fur was drenched in blood. He had three broken ribs, and his back-left leg was shattered. He fell unconscious due to the massive fall. He eventually woke up, not knowing if he slept thought the night or not. He tried to get up but that sent shockwaves of pain though out his body. It hurt enough to where he fell unconscious again. He again woke up not knowing how long he was knocked out for. By now his body has dulled the pain. He again tried to get up but could not move. He tried to drag himself, but he could not muster the strength to do so. He tried calling for help, but no one was there to answer his cries.

He thought about his family for the last time, not knowing if he was going to make it thought the rest of the day. He thought about the good times he had as a pup, and some of the bad. He could not help it but to let out all his emotions, he started to cry. He wailed out, even the trees can hear his cries.

He looked up and saw a dark figure between the trees.

He got scared and yelled "Please, just go away!"

"Why would I do that?" Said the mysterious voice.

" Because... I don't know, I..I just want to be left alone" said Lucky.

"But, I'm trying to help you" said the dark figure.

The dark figure was slowly creeping out of his hiding place. The dark figure has revealed himself to be a Wolf. The Wolf came right up to Lucky and examined his body before proceeding.

He tried to pick him up slowly but he whimpered. The Wolf slowly lowered him on the ground.

"You're lucky you've survived" said the Wolf.

"Yeah, I guess I am pretty lucky" Smiling as Lucky said that.

"What is your name?... Wolf" Lucky said in an uneasy tone.

"My name is Adoff, and yours?" said Adoff

"My name is Lucky" he said still unstable voice. Not knowing what Adoff was about to do.

Adoff nodded. This time he tried to pick him up with more force. Lucky yelped at the pain. Adoff hoisted him up and onto his back. Lucky was in more pain than he ever has been. Adoff carried him to his den not too far from where they'd met. Adoff cared and nurtured Lucky until his wounds have healed.

It's been close to month now, the temperature has started to warm up and spring was by the corner. Lucky's wounds have almost healed. His owners gave up and faced the fact that he may be dead, they mourned for his loss and moved on with their lives. Adoff continued to care for him. Giving him food, water, and attention (When he needed it.)

Two weeks later, Lucky's wounds have fully healed. Spring has just come in time. The whole forest was alive. The birds were chirping, and it was calm and warm outside. He was outside of the den walking and talking next to Adoff.

"I never got the chance to say thank-you" said Lucky.

"No problem, it's the least I can do" said Adoff.

"I owe you a debt, you helped me in a time of need. When no one else was there to help. You chose to help me" Lucky started to tear up as the words came out of his mouth.

"Please don't cry, I can't take crying" Snickering as Adoff said that.

Lucky laughed as Adoff cheered him up.

Over the next year Adoff has thought Lucky how to hunt for food. Since he was still inexperienced, he was only hunting small rodents.

Soon he will be old enough to hunt Elk and defend himself from other predators.

He still hasn't given up on finding his family. To see them for the last time before he moves on with his life.

The next day he told Adoff he wants to see his family for the last time.

"Why do you want to see your family so badly?" Adoff said sounding depressed.

Ignoring his question "Would you like to come with me to see my family" Lucky asked in a low, squeaky voice.

Adoff thinking for a minute "Yes, that would be an interesting site to see" Snickering as he said that.

With that they set off to find Lucky's family. They crossed though high rock and rushing rivers.

About two hours of traveling, everything started to look familiar. He saw the trail he used to travel on when he was a pup. He also passed the place he got lost at, it was only half mile away from the trail. He took a left and headed down toward the house. Adoff was following right beside him.

"I hope my family remembers me" Lucky said in a hoping voice that they will.

"I'm sure they will remember you" Adoff replied to cheer him up.

When they arrived at the border of the land. Lucky got all excited and ran toward the door.

He scratched and barked at the door hoping someone would answer.

No one answered. His wagging tail slowed, then stopped. He listened to any sign of life inside the house. Two minutes later he heard footsteps. He started to bark again. The door opened and the person looked down at the over excited dog. He stared at the dog, he thought to himself that he has seen this dog once. He started to tear, he got on his knees and hug Lucky tight in his arms.

"You came back... Bu- but how?" Crying as he said it.

Lucky looked back to Adoff

"Come here boy, come on its okay" Adrian said in a soothing soft voice.

Adoff slowly walked toward Adrian. He sniffed his hand still unsure what'll happen.

"Come on it's okay, go ahead" Adrian said in a soothing voice again.

Adoff licked Adrian's hand. Adrian attempts to pet Adoff but he got scared and stepped away from Adrian.

"Thanks-you for bringing Lucky back home safely" Said Adrian

Adrian gestured to Lucky to follow him, but he did not budge. Lucky looked back to Adoff.

"Go ahead, go to your owner, he needs you" Adoff said in a saddened tone.

"I don't want to go with him, I want to stay with you" Lucky said while starting to tear.

Adrian looked down at Lucky and nodded in approval.

Lucky knew that he could go if he wants to.

Adoff started to walk back into the forest...

Lucky looked back at his owner possibly for the last time. He jumped on him and licked him on the face. Then Lucky jumped off Adrian. Just as he was about to go back into the woods with Adoff Adrian said.

"Listen Wolf... I want you to take very good care of Lucky. He means the world to me and if anything happens to him.... I don't know what I am going to do with myself.

Adoff nodded in agreement.

With that said Adoff and Lucky ran back into the woods and back to their den.

Ever since then, Adoff and Lucky would return to see Adrian every year. They would spend the whole day there. Adrian would feed them, play games with them, and cherish their love.

The two lovebirds have not stopped loving each other since the day they met. They have been there in the time of need. They kept each other warm through the frigid winters.
