The Club is a Dangerous Place (Part 3/7)

Xavier hummed to himself as he washed his paws in the sink. He shook them to get rid of the excess water and used his shirt to dry it completely. He walked outside, looking for Dylan.

He saw them in a grove of trees. He walked over, letting himself adjust to the darker surroundings. Tiff was there too. She was kissing her boyfriend, Klick. "Wait, that's Klick," he thought to himself, noticing that there was a fox leaning against a tree, still toying with his phone.

He shifted his line of sight back to the embracing couple.

To his horror, Dylan was still connected by the muzzle to Tiff, who was almost writhing in passion.

Xavier felt his heart shatter into microscopic fragments. "How could he?" he thought. He wanted to approach them, to ask for an explanation. The stinging of tears began. Suddenly he could hear them moaning each other's names. That sealed his mind. He knew they were enjoying it. "Dylan was mine..." he whimpered, crying as he turned around and ran from the scene, wanting to be alone at home. He heard laughter, and he felt even more alone. His mate had abandoned him for another otter, and they enjoyed it. He sobbed louder, exiting the park on the path. He crossed the street, letting his tears fly behind as he ran. No one was around to see him. Reaching his street, he ran faster, seeing his house in the distance.

He felt as though his stomach would drop out from inside of him, and his heart would soon follow. His chest tightened, as he fought the urge to lie down on the sidewalk and hit the concrete with his fists and scream out in pain. He finally reached home, and unlocked the door with his key with his fumbling paw.

He ran down the hallway, crying into his arm. Running into the room he and Dylan shared, he locked the door behind him and collapsed on the bed.

Xavier sobbed loudly, and his tears flowed freely. "Why would he do that?" he thought.

A part of his mind wanted to believe that it was all a mistake. "It could be a misunderstanding"

"How?! They were kissing! And laughing!" he fought back.

"Well, maybe he thought Tiff was you"

"He would have noticed...And they were moaning each other's names! And laughing!"

His mind sighed. "I can't think of anything else"

Xavier went back to his sobbing. He muffled his whimpers and heaves in a pillow, but soon it became damp with his tears. He thought back to their day. He remembered how they fell asleep in each other's arms, how they cuddled in front of the television, and how Dylan stayed at the restaurant just for him. He cried harder.

"Why would he do that?" Xavier asked himself. He remembered how much Dylan wanted to go to that club. That club! If they had never gone, then this wouldn't have happened. "We shouldn't have gone," Xavier thought, "Why did we even go there?!"

He already knew the answer. Dylan wanted to go. Did Dylan know that this was going to happen? If he did, then he wouldn't have insisted on going. Would he?

Xavier made a sudden connection that he never wanted to make. "What if Dylan wanted to go to the club just to meet someone else?"

Xavier's lower lip trembled. He buried his face in the pillow again, feeling the soaked cloth stick to his muzzle. The sobs wouldn't stop. Every time he thought about Dylan, he cried. Every time he thought about how well Dylan had treated him over the past few months, he felt sadder and the tear flow increased.

No one loved him. The only one who actually expressed any interest in him was Dylan. And now, he was gone: snatched away in a single night.

Nothing mattered anymore. Xavier continued asking himself, "Why did he do that?" His mind flicked through many possibilities. "Maybe he lost interest in me. What if I did something to push him away? What if he was never interested in me at all? No, that's impossible. He loves me. He loves me, right? But, then why was he kissing someone else, and enjoying it? Does he still love me? Did he ever love me?"

Xavier continued arguing with himself. Each scenario made him feel worse. He flipped over his pillow to the dry side. It wouldn't be dry for long. He continued crying, imbuing the cloth with his sadness and flooding it with his tears.

After turning to the side, Xavier opened his eyes. His vision was blurred from the tears. He caught sight of a picture on Dylan's desk. It depicted them at the beach, happily splashing around in the waves. He thought back to that weekend.

It was more of a couple's retreat, really. Dylan and Danielle brought their respective mates to a small timeshare that Sandra had in a secluded cove. It was extravagantly luxurious, but it wasn't too expensive since they could only use it for a window of two weeks. As it happens, that year, first semester of school ended during those weeks. A whole weekend of free time was created. Sandra let Dylan and Danielle use the timeshare for the weekend. She herself had a business trip and couldn't make it. But, she did manage to sneak in some of her humorous self into the trip by packing boxes of condoms and lubricant into Dylan's things and bottles of squirt-able chocolate syrup in Danielle's. She included a note in each, saying "Have fun!" and a suggestive emoticon.

_ Once there, they unpacked, each dragon receiving an unforeseen gift. While they groaned, Liz tried to stifle her laughter. Xavier fainted._

_ Finally, they put on their swimming gear and gathered beach equipment and headed out. The cabin was at the very edge of the cove, and the beach was literally four steps from the back door. The beach was small. It could fit about fifty furs at one time, but for only four, it seemed enormous. Tall cliffs blocked either side, creating a private cove just for them. The water was pleasantly warm, and sparkled under the sunlight. Xavier thought that he could take a picture and pass it off as a commercial resort's advertisement._

_ While Danielle and Liz set up towels and an umbrella on the sand, Dylan and Xavier held paws and ran into the water, feeling the waves flow through their legs. They found a comfortable depth, with the water rising only up to their waist. Each of Dylan's claws had found a way to hold onto Xavier's paws. They stood in the water, feeling content with the entire world._

_ Liz took out her camera and started taking pictures, while Danielle read a magazine under the sun. Dylan put his mouth in the ocean, sucking up water. He sprayed it at Xavier, who laughed and tried to duck. He hid under the water, and took up a mouthful of the sea himself. He spit it out at Dylan, who shouted out. Xavier jumped into Dylan, who wrapped his arms around the otter. The fur had become shiny and matted in the water. The dragon stroked it gently, while Xavier leaned in closer and closer to Dylan. Their muzzles touched gently. Liz snapped a photo._

Xavier sobbed harder when he remembered how close to Dylan he had been. "Dylan, don't leave me..." he thought, crying even more at the thought of losing his mate. "But I love him..." he whimpered to himself. He rolled back onto his stomach, and wept into his pillow again. "D-Dylan..." he wailed, "I love you..."

Xavier blindly thrust his right arm out, trying to find the picture on his desk. His paws found it and brought it over. He lifted his head up, laid the picture on the pillow, and stared down at it. To Xavier, it was a reminder of what he had before, and how much he had lost. "Dylan..." he whimpered. "Do you still love me?" he asked the motionless dragon in the photograph.

There was no answer.

"Did you ever love me?"

Tears dropped from Xavier's eyes, and landed on the glass frame of the photograph, splattering slightly. He picked up the frame in his paw, and removed the actual picture from the glass. Setting the frame back on the desk, he rolled onto his back. He hugged the picture close to his chest, wishing that he could return to his happy state, with Dylan. His tears rolled down the side of his head, as he held the photograph tighter, trying to merge himself with his past image.

He wanted to be with Dylan badly. He started looking for more pictures of himself and the dragon. He searched the room, but he couldn't find any. He shakily stood up from the bed. Still holding the picture of them at the beach, he stumbled down the hall, still sobbing loudly. He went to the living room, and picked up a picture of Dylan on the mantle. He took it, frame and all, and cradled it in his arms. He hugged it tight until the corners of the picture frame started cutting into his arms. He squeezed tighter, not caring about the pain. He wanted to be as close to the dragon as possible. He felt a little better. Then, he let go of the picture, and saw the smiling face of Dylan. He felt a lot worse.

Xavier cried harder, trying to stop the pain and stop the sadness. He shuffled into the kitchen and sat down on the floor, leaning against the dishwasher. He thought about further back. He thought about how he confessed to Dylan his feelings, and how Dylan had came back for him. He remembered Dylan holding him close, telling him that he loved him. He thought back to the first time they were intimate, and how much the dragon cared for him. It didn't mean anything now. He was abandoned, and Dylan didn't care at all. His parents didn't want him, and he had three friends who weren't even that close. All he had was Dylan. And now the love of his life, his reason to live, had left him.

There was no reason to live anymore. There was no universe. Without Dylan, Xavier was nothing. Still holding the two pictures in one paw, he used the other to reach open a drawer above him. He felt around until he found a sharp steak knife. The blade was serrated and the edge was sharpened. "I can't live without you, Dylan," he sobbed, looking at the picture of them together. He placed the picture on the ground, never breaking eye contact with it. He placed the knife's blade right at the inside joint of his elbow. He pressed down slightly. "Dylan...I love you..." he wailed.

He pulled sharply.

Geez, in retrospect, I think I made this sadder and more grim-dark then I meant to...

Well, what's done is done...

I hope this part didn't scare you away!
