Written by me!

I was born and raised inside these walls. This prison we call home, many have tried to escape to see what's on the outside, and all those who succeeded never returned. Why? I don't know, is it better out there? Is it so deadly you will never have the chance to return? Or is it just a one way trip and everything is simply like they tell us, normal. I read books from the time before the walls, they all share different stories about the world being dangerous or vary beautiful. The only plants I've ever seen are the ones in the city garden; I've never seen anything grow anywhere else other than from the windows of the richest people in here.

"It's dead in here" I say to myself, alone as always. There are no other people my age here, I'm 19. Everyone is at the average of 30 to 40 now the youngest people I know are 26 or 27. No one acts like me, in fact I am the youngest and most different person this this place we call home. The Dome, T.D for short. T.D has been the home of every citizen in here for 6 generations and over 500 years ago they permanently shut the doors. This place is self-sustained; we get out water from underground wells and springs. The air is cleaned and filtered by the many plants that grow in the garden, no one is allowed in there because of the risk of poisoning the plants and killing everyone here. The closest I've ever touched to a plant is my own food like carrots, lettuce and corn. It's depressing, I'm so used to touching metal and stone it's almost sickening. The fabric for our clothing is made from cotton or some sort of natural source. The Dome, it is about 100 kilometres tall and about 100,000 km wide from the center. Our population is no greater than 100,000 people and we can only reproduce another generation every 30 years limiting the amount of births to expected deaths. The laws are strict here, and if you break them you are sentenced to death. Government here is even stricter; you're not allowed to join if a family member from your family tree has broken the law up to 3 generations ago.

My father, Demetrious Long was a spot man. It was his job to point out any living thing that got too close to the dome so the gunman could shoot them down. My father must have seen something worth leaving for, because one day he never came home again. And thanks to the laws we have I'll never be a spot man like my dad because he broke the law and left. They found out the night he left and told us the next morning, my early graduation papers were terminated and now I have to go to school to find a different job. My mom works full time at the hospital to take care of us now, she's not even a registered nurse. My mom is walking a very thin line if she gets caught. So what do I do on my spare time? I try to escape so my mom won't have to work at the hospital anymore if I leave and she can go back to being a teacher in the heath department. I don't even go to school and thankfully there are no laws against it. I do my research I talk to as many family's with missing friends and family to know the dates and the times they all left. I also check all the listings of job openings for positions to see where they are most understaffed.

If you are reading this journal, then I have left you these to let you know I made it.

You are my mother after all.

Love: Your Son, Rien.
