#2 of D.E1 (story)

First chapter of my story. Finally the name of the main protagonist is revealed. Many questions and doubts rise in this chapter, but at the same time most things that were presented in the Prologue start making sense. This story will present you clues of what might be happening, but it's not until later when everything starts making sense, so it is quite a demanding story since there is a lot of information that you'll have to keep in your mind. You will also notice that I'll use a first person narrative most of the times, something that it's not commonly used, but due to me being so in touch with my characters, it's the only way I could do this. Only if the situation makes it illogical for a first person narrative, then it will shift to a more traditional third person narrative.

If you decide to read this, I invite you to read the prologue first. It's just 2 pages, so it won't take long. Plus, it's a key to understanding some of the things that happen in this first chapter.

I appologize if the paragraphs seem broken. I'm having a hard time using this system.

** Chapter 1** Call of duty

_ Finally, I've successfully completed my training for the D.E Development Team. I really don't know what I'm doing, or why I took this decision, but there is no turning back now. I gave my promise that I would help in the protection of Canis Major, and our brothers and sisters... I must comply with it... I won't fail..._

Holding my tears, I stood in front of Hasky. She and I are almost identical, often confused as twins. Without making the moment longer than necessary, I gave Hasky a hug and after that, it was time for me to leave. Yes, it was sad, but at the same time everybody in the Zone that I live at wished me the best. It really made me feel special. I felt confuse either way since everything happened so fast. I could hardly stop to think why Fx and I decided to get involved in the D.E Project. We had Hasky and our friends, and that was all we could ask for. Since Fx and I were born after the last attack, the life that we had was perfect and without any worries. This would change our routine for an indefinite period of time. Fx and I were always involved on learning about technology and science, so it was no surprise that our results in the training were outstanding. We always had a fascination for ships as well, and thanks to that, our results in the flying simulator tests were way above average. That would prove us to be very helpful in the initial tests for the D.E fighter ships. We couldn't say no. It would be a waste of talent... It was the longest day of my life. And finally to the first D.E Cruiser I was heading to. Fx made it weeks before me since his results were quite outstanding, and proved him to be better than me on the final tests. Maybe I got distracted, but the important thing is that I finally made it. Canis Major looked so glorious. A long time had passed since I got that far from the Sector that holds the Zone were I live at. Seeing and feeling its massive size was overwhelming. Riding a high speed train, it took me half and hour to reach the main hangar Sector. My legs were shaking as I was finally boarding the transport ship that would take me to the D.E Cruiser. "We will be there in fifteen minutes." The pilot said. I don't know how long it took, due to my feelings taking me away from reality at that moment. I was once again thinking of the beautiful life I had with my family, Fx and Hasky, and how we were going to be separated from now on. I was fighting so hard to hold my tears. I knew that at least I was going to reunite with one of them, but still, the feeling from being away from the other, and far away from home, made me sick. I felt that if my brother Evocanis piloting the transport ship saw me, he would try to persuade me to go back. I had a promise to fulfill and that wasn't a choice. After my long trip, there it was... Through the transport ship's window, I could see the D.E Cruiser in all its magnificence. Model Wolf 5000DE, a truly amazing ship. It felt weird. I was so familiar to this ship due to the training, yet it was the first time I was so close to it, or even more incredible, the first time I was going on board. The main entrance in the ship's hangar opened, and the small transport ship I was in entered. "Here we are, my friend." The pilot said. "Thanks..." I replied quietly. It felt like I was thanking him for separating me from my home. I didn't like that feeling, but it wasn't his fault. As I got off the small transport ship, I started to scan the scene. It was unbelievable what my sky blue eyes were seeing. This ship was a hundred percent Retcan technology. I walked around the hangar admiring the magnificent sights of the ship. I saw the Wolf500 space fighters sitting in the hangar, and just imagined how pleasant it would be to pilot one of those. "The Retcans have done so much for us." Said the Evocanis Pilot while he peeked outside the transport ship. _ _"They saved us from extinction twelve years ago. Day by day, they teach us their ways and share their technology even though they have no obligation on doing so." The pilot continued. He looked around while letting out a sigh. "And that's why I mustn't withdraw... It's our turn to do something." I replied as I headed my way toward the inside of the ship. "Well, in that case I wish you the best of lucks, my friend. What you are doing is the most important thing that any Evocanis has done for Canis Major." The pilot said. I just smiled. As he was preparing for departure, he peeked outside the ship once again. "Hey! What's your name?" He asked. "Husky... That's my name." I replied. "Husky the husky... Very clever." He mocked me in a friendly matter due to me being a Siberian Husky Evocanis named Husky. _ _"Well, it was a pleasure meeting you, Husky the husky. Oh, and I'm Rody, by the way." The floppy eared dog smiled. He got in the ship, and waited for me to clear the hangar. I turned away from the transport ship, not looking back. Every step I took felt like I carried a thousand pounds in each paw. I searched my feelings in hopes to find anything that could make me feel better at that moment. Suddenly I heard someone shout my name... "Husky!" It didn't come from behind me; it came from further inside the ship. What made me feel great was the fact that that voice was very familiar. A voice that I've been hearing all my life. As I searched to find where that voice came from, I saw someone at the end of the runway. He was in some sort of terrace and I could see a thick elevator door closing behind him. He was waving at me, as he shouted my name again. "Husky! Over here!" As I got closer, I noticed it was someone I knew and loved profoundly. It was my dear Fx. I ran up a stairway until I got where he was. Now in front of each other, we didn't say anything. Our eyes became watery as we gave each other a warm hug. "I'm so happy to have you here, brother." Fx said. I could hear his voice breaking. "I missed you so much. I'm sorry I couldn't make it before." _ _I felt bad because Fx was all alone for more than a month due to me not completing the training at the same time than him. He didn't seem to mind at all. Like me, he was happy that we were finally together. Fx and I are inseparable. We were raised together. We didn't know life without each other. Fx and I were lucky to be born within the same week, and to be together since. And it's interesting to mention that even though we are considered brothers, we aren't even blood related. That it is easily noticeable, since Fx is completely different from me. He is a mixed breed dog, believed to be somewhat related to an ancient Fox-Dog hybrid mix. Genetically, he is 98.9% Dog, but his appearance resembles a Red Fox. Me, I'm just a plain black and white Siberian Husky.

I don't know how long we held the hug, when suddenly the lights of the hangar changed from a dim pale blue light to a deep blue light. An alert could be heard, and the elevator behind us opened. "We have to get in, Husky. The transport ship is leaving." We got in, and almost immediately the doors closed and the elevator started moving to the upper levels. "This place is incredible, Fx." I said, trying to take my mind away from what was making me sad before. "You haven't seen anything yet, brother." Fx assured. He smiled and I could notice he was really excited to show me the place For some reason, the sadness was going away. As long as I had Fx on my side, everything was going to be ok. Curiously, there was not much to say. We both still felt somehow confused by the decision we made. "How does it feel to be in the D.E cruiser at last?" Fx asked, while placing his hand-paw lightly on my shoulder. "You tell me. You've been here more time than I've had."_ _ "There is a lot to know about this D.E Cruiser. You'll learn your way around it eventually. you'll find it to be a great experience."_ _ The elevator finally reached its destination. MAIN DECK could be read in the small display next to the elevator controls._ _ "How were your last days at home?" Fx asked. "As usual. But you couldn't help to feel that there was a lot of tension in the air. Hasky and I didn't talk too much since yesterday. I think we were both afraid of doing so."_ _ "I know what you mean..." _ We both looked down. We felt the same sadness. _ "She is strong, Fx. You know her. But I know her also, and I could tell she was devastated. And that's when you left. Right now, I couldn't even imagine how she's feeling." A couple of minutes passed before we opened the elevator door. For a second we felt like withdrawing from the D.E Development Team. But like I said before, that was not a choice. Like always, Fx saw the good side of our current situation. That's one of his qualities, being a very thoughtful and positive boy._ _ "I know that you're asking yourself if we made the right decision, Husky. I ask that question to myself every day since I've been here." Fx said. He knew me better than myself sometimes._ _ "Do you think we have what it takes, Fx?"_ _ "I don't know. Only time will tell. But for now we must give everything for this mission that we've been entrusted. Remember that the D.E project is still in its initial stages. We are test subjects. In the future, we will be replaced by a definitive crew and we will be able to return home. As a matter of fact, we can always return home, as you've been already told. But if we go now, the D.E project will take more time to develop. And you know that the faster the D.E project goes fully operational, the safer Canis Major will be, and the faster we will find our lost Evocanis brothers and sisters."_ _ He was right. We had to continue for the sake of our species. The more time this took, the more time it would take for Canis Major to be fully protected, and the more difficult would be to find our lost comrades. That was the most delicate part of it, because the sooner we would go fully operational, the more chance there would be to find them alive._ _ It was a hard decision, yes. But Fx and I knew that we had a promise to fulfill. A promise to Canis Major. Getting used to a new routine and life style was going to be stressful, but we were raised by the strongest and bravest Evo in the universe, Hasky. We were doing this for her and the others who survived through the attacks. For the ones that raised us, took care of us and ensured that we lived a happy and safe life. We owed her and the others.
