Chapter 2, its time for a new type of commander to take on a new responsibility

CHAPTER 2

"STARTING A NEW LIFE"

Pulling out the few articles of clothing that he still had after all of this time, Tirol Leonidas tossed them into the crates that held most of his clothing already letting out the frustration for all of the things that had happened since arriving in this galaxy when he was barely 5 years old with the original colonists.

Standing about 6' 0", 210lbs with short brown hair that looked ragged which needed to be cut for sure, with a well-built appearance again he needed to shave and get a better appearance about him before leaving for the ship. If a person was to look at him from a distance, they could've sworn that he didn't belong in fleet at all. Nevertheless, that wasn't the case.

His parents, his father a Marine CO aboard the Escort flagship with his mother being Chief Medical Officer aboard the same ship, had already wanted to get started on a new life figuring that they could begin it with the colonists that were leaving Earth.

Finding him staying with family friends on board the Lead Colony ship that was in the group, Tirol had been among several other children that used to play up and down the corridors. Either playing tag, hide and seek or some other games that were set up for the kids while either at school which the ships had set up to continue their educations or elsewhere on the ship.

Although surrounded by other kids and family friends, Tirol found him lonely almost being like an outsider with no real family near him at all. He barely got to see his own parents at all always stuck with their own work which left him with only a holovid or video chat and this was well before the actual mission happened.

They were always stuck on board the ship training for the beginning of the mission, and when he did get to see them it was only for a brief few minutes before the nanny took over. It was indeed a lonely life until the accident had happened in which they were thrown all of this way here.

Once here in the new galaxy, Tirol found he in shock from the events that had happened as one thing that he learned was instead of being transferred to the planet with him, his parents were staying shipboard.

Letting out a sigh as he closed up the lid for the crate sealing up the things inside, he hit the call button for the transporter to start beaming up the stuff to the supply shuttle. Within minutes the items disappeared leaving him standing in the middle of his empty room that once held several items but now lay abandoned for the next person.

Leaning down, he picked up the overnight bag that contained several things that he needed enroute. The bag containing a duty uniform, a dress uniform for ceremonies, change of clothing for off duty, and his new orders were the only things that he would have access to until the rest of his things were unloaded.

On the planet about 4 years after the colonists had settled on the planet building new lives for themselves, he had ended up living with the family friends until the day that his parents came down to pick him up. They would explain later after getting settled in a home on the outskirts of the town, that they hated leaving him alone on the strange world.

Although he found himself back in comfortable feeling of being back with his parents, Tirol never did feel the same or so he figured would go well with having biological parents. Figuring that they did it for a reason, he tried his best of open up to his parents about things and too trust them once more.

However it never seemed to be the same if they had been with him from day one, which he never did look at them like, parents like the people that he had stayed with.

When he finished with his basic schooling, Tirol found himself being accepted into the military basically aiming for command of a ship. Although he had trouble past with several things but not bad enough that it would keep him from joining the military, he found himself able to get to the command school after he finished basic training.

After about 10 years of service and learning the basics of shipboard operations and command structure, Tirol received his Lt. Commander pips and waited for assignment.

Well that didn't last long for a wait, receiving a call from an Admiral Devon Mitchell Burkley that ordered him to report to her office ASAP for assignment. When he had gotten the assignment he was in the middle of a hangover having partied half the night through so when the comm beeped signaling that there was a call that needed his attention.

Groaning as he flipped over and hit the comm button just raising his head enough to stare into the screen as the Admirals face appeared although he couldn't really tell what she looked like as much of his hair was hanging down in front of his eyes plus his eyes were swollen a bit.

"Am I disturbing you, Commander?" a stern yet humor in her voice asked him causing Tirol to sit up straight from his bed letting out a groan. "I take it that you were out partying last night?"

"Pretty much, ma'am. I wasn't really expecting to get a call this early in the morning."

"I see well get up and get dressed...you have about 2 hours to report to my office, you are getting your first command, Commander." She ordered causing him to look surprise to cross his face.

Tirol was about to inquire about it however the Admiral's face disappeared leaving him confused because of the few things. One was why would they be giving him the command when they probably have a ton of officers waiting for a ship.

Second he didn't realize there were any ships in the area that needed commander officers so soon. Pulling himself out of bed finding that he was indeed in a state of ruckus by the looks of him and his clothing, he went about getting cleaned up with a shower and shave getting rid of his clothing that reeked of alcohol and vomit.

About an hour and a half later, he found himself stepping into the admirals office located on the top floor of the old station. Stepping up to the assistant's desk he took off his officer's cap before speaking. "Lt. Commander Tirol Leonidas to see Admiral Burkley."

The assistant looked up from her computer console offering a smile nodding. "The Admiral is waiting for you in her office, Commander. Go ahead in."

Tirol nodded as he stepped on through the door leaving the assistant to allow her eyes over his form as the doors closed behind him. In front of him sat a finely dressed human female about 5' 6" 200+lbs because of the slight swell in her mid-section indicating that she was pregnant.

Snapping a salute after he came to stand in front of the desk. "Lt. Commander Tirol Leonidas reporting as ordered, ma'am."

She looked up from her reports giving him a once over before nodding. "Welcome to the station, Commander. Please have a seat."

"Thank you, ma'am." He said taking a seat at the indicated seat all together.

"Coffee? Water?" she asked standing up with a coffee cup in her hand heading toward a maker on the far desk.

"No thanks ma'am. I never really cared for the coffee that much...even for getting rid of a hangover." He answered shaking his head as the Admiral shrugged before retrieving a cup for herself before returning to her desk.

"Never really did myself however it's the only thing that I seem to be able to drink that can stay down." She answered letting out a laugh. "Anyways, down to business. You may be wondering why you were called here."

"You can say that again. I mean there must be several other officers that would be way ahead of me that were looking forward to the command." He answered being honest any way that he could.

"Well most of the higher ups would agree with you about that however there is trouble brewing on the border and frankly no one is truly willing to take on the assignments." She answered being frank with him.

"Then why am I here? I have heard about the incidents that are happening out on the border area and by the sounds of it I am not that crazy to get into the job either." He answered with a raised eyebrow.

"That's not what your profile says," she said picking up the file that sat on her desk, "sited for disobeying direct orders to jump away in certain situations siting that the order is wrongful in every way that should be explained by a certain instructor by the name of Admiral Cheppard."

"I was wondering why that guy ever got to the rank that he is currently at for that attitudes." Tirol muttered under his voice.

"I got a letter from the admiral about a week later recommending that you get dismissed from the entire command program all together for disobeying that order. However when things were getting hot on the border, it was recommended that you continue on." She said before producing another file handing it off to him. "We still don't have anything on what is attacking the ships however all we do know is that we need a new way of addressing how our commanders in the field address the approaching. So we have decided to hand over command of the brand new ship the NGS Yonaga."

"New ship? How is a new ship going to make a difference if the old ships in the fleet are being torn apart?" Tirol asked.

"That's because this new ship is going to be completely different...the first of her class intergrading the technologies from a new race that introduced itself to us about 3 years ago and offered to help build up our forces in exchange for a few things." She answered before indicating the file in Tirol's hands. "That there is the new addition to the fleet...your new boat."
