Prolog

Her high-tops broke over the paint of reds and gold's spread out on the forest floor, cracking the leaves and living a seen tail as she walked in the golden woods behind her care taker. A aged red farm house, looking more a tome in the fading light and a cage with its windows blinking in and out like a cat's eye before a kill of a mouse, yet she choose not to turn her cerulean eyes to the faint outline as she only walked more in step by step deeper into the hidden trails, tongue lashing out to taste the blood still fresh on her broken lips from the open hand smack of the man while his wife had watched and only went back to washing the dishes with her true daughter.

What might cause a grown man to hit a female child only nine years old? How more many times had her questions gotten her but more broken lips and sore body still covered in the purple buses of last weeks sessions. She was a child and a child asked questions to learn more about there world. Natural as rain follows or a sun setting to a normal setting but this was not normal and she might be an outcast from the world all the more.

So she would retreat to one place they could not follow, the forest, all the more feeling like her home in taking in the scents of pines and broken painted leaves. The suns last true warmth in a false hope of a Indian summer spreading. Here her eyes would come to seek something hidden in the leaves, a print fresh in the land, something of a paw, claws in frame and bigger then her hand.

Their songs ringing true and wild on natures call, from nightless moons to the full belly of the full moon they would sing together as but also their own tune of untamed harmony, A song of pack and the hunt but also of lost and just being free. The song of wolves that called deep in her heart as she lay nights awake, eyes looking at blinking stars in the frame of a crack window and later she would seek a sign of them, prints fresh and new to even knowing a scent of a den of pups from last year she hoped. Seeking the signs of wolves...

The child had seen them also, a peek of silver in the timbers, to a maze of rusty gold's and reds to a color of grey snow and the mix of a storm over painted whites. Knowing sometimes they must have come on her scent in their woods and unknowing to the child, as much as she had come to watch them so had they come to watch her when she entered into the woods the past few seasons. Wolves where by nature shy beings but higher soul from a complex pack life to their personal thoughts and habits but these four pups of maybe last years pups, all leg and still new eyed came to watching this strange lone human girl.

More so the lone white female, often a wanderer from the group and coming on the sweet scent of the human bit it held also such a sorrow, a broken innocent lost years before coming to this place in diction of the foster care system that pitched her life till years later she hit the age of freedom. Eyes the color of a ideal sapphire set in a frame of white fur, ears a crown of points with no marks on her lean body, yet all leg and some what a pup herself. Why a wolf might follow a human went against nature ways? Still these where not natures born wolves, they where something more in eyes and thoughts, a shift of shape of four to two from claws to human hands. Oh so much more where these sleek bodies but unlike the old legends not bound by the moon as some might have called.

In body of a wolf, she was a yearling but as human a normal ten year old child well loved by a father and her pack like the others born in this new generation yet in wolf form, her thoughts simple but a weave of images holding more then word or meaning to the others in how they talked silent mind to mind so the human was not needed but it her own inner wolf who had come to follow the girl and some times the other three of her small pack.

What the girl and wolf could not see was the meeting and change in one moment of a veiled claw drape, years old but working as a slender paw pressed on it under the leaves and snapping in moments to nearly break bone. A yip of pain and while to a howl, mind sending out images to the others of what had happened but they lay too far to hear her in both verbal and none. Still one soul did hear the lone whine, turning to peek from a old oak, eyes bright and blue and body so to human.

Blood still fresh but drying on her lips and chin, her scent being carried by the wind to the young wolf and a moment their eyes met in some connection. The human hungered in the sight of a wolf so close but the bight scarlet of flesh blood on such pure fur hit her mind in moments, seeing the teeth of the trap biting into the flesh of the front paw and worry filling her mind while the wolf only watched the human, eyes narrows and lips pulled back to show fang out of fear as her instinct said.

Coming to be on all fours, dampness kissed her hands and knees in jeans, eyes on the trap and paw held in it while the voice of the wolf filled the air between them. Moving slow on all fours much as a wolf as the human could, letting out a low while and head and eyes lowered while the white wolf paused in seeing such actions so wolf like from the girl but her scent she knew as hit a memory of watching, then blue met blue for a moment as the human was close enough to touch the fur, the scent of musk, rich and wild filling her nose while the wolf catch the scent of her human.

Hands slowly came to touch the trap, feathery feeling the fur of the wolf as she once more growled deeper, yet the girl kept her eyes locket on the eyes of the female wolf, darting to see the trap and hating the crimson on her fur still fresh and bleeding. In moments the wolf could just move and take her pale throat and snap her neck in those fangs and powerful jaws but some how she did not.

Hands grabbed a lone stick, the other pulling at the trap and fighting the years of rust but slowly some how moving the steel teeth, letting the stick fill in the gap and pushing more so the young she wolf could pull out her paw and be free of this man made trap which she did but the stick broke in moments, steel teeth hungry for the fingers of the solitary human but quick teeth dug into her shirt and pulled her way, yet blood was found as they bit deep enough in later years to leave a four prong scar on her left hand in matching to the scar on the right of the wolf's waist in both forms.

Crimson tears hitting the leaves and mixing to form a single red drop on a few leaves under the oak. One save for the other while the human lay on the leaves and the wolf coming to sit next to her, all again gone but eyes on eyes, both drinking in the sight of the other, the wolf coming down to sniff the pack of the neck of honey colored hair in a mix of burgundy and copper, pulling the truer scent of the human and coming to carrying it more in her mind then anything and those blue eyes, a broken shell of sky blue to the color of a angry ocean caught in the storm. Wild eyes noting the wounds on her hand before letting herself lick the wound in a show of thanks and feeling a pull to this human. Then in moments of a whine and one more wet kiss to her check, she was gone as a ghost.

The human lay a moment more, her hand sore and angry but feeling no regrets she had saved the wolf, slowly standing but seeing the blood stained leaves and gathered a few of them in hoping to hold the memory of what had happened this day, the scent of the wolf lingering the air and blood. Coming once more to walk back to the brick house, holding the leaves years later that would keep her alive in the memory but also the a lone howl also the night held a promise of more to the human as she listened like always.

A promise that would come true, fates meeting and parting while the wolf would seek the human and the human to the wolf but the wolf in a girl's skin would also yearn from memories of broken blue eyes and scars hidden on a human hand
