The Teacher's Assistant

Part 3

Drown in You and Daughtry are © Daughtry

The birds were singing on that particular Friday morning as Lucas groggily sat up in bed. He turned to see Jon sleeping peacefully. Lucas smiled and kissed Jon on the lips softly, so he wouldn't wake him up. Jon mumbled a little and rolled onto his back and continued to sleep. Lucas rubbed his rear end, making the pain of last nights session with Jon go away. Still he managed to smile again as he walked downstairs and got dressed for class. He wrote Jon a note, explaining his plans for later that evening:

My dearest Jon, I left early since I have classes. Last night was the best night of my life, and thanks to you, I am no longer alone. I can set aside my promiscuous life so long as I can be with you. In class I know we have to pick a song to sing that expresses our feelings, and I have a song picked out by Daughtry, because I know he's a fave of yours. Love you, Lucas.

After he finished his note, Lucas picked up his guitar and left Jon's house quietly. He rushed back to his dorm and grabbed a quick shower. Mason was waiting outside his dorm with a cross look on his face.

"Spill it pony boy. Where were you last night?" Mason said.

"I think you know where." Lucas said with a wink.

"You were with Mr. Pierce!? How was he?" Mason said loudly.

"SHHH! Not so loud! If you must know he was wonderful. I'm gonna sing a song for him in class today, since that's our assignment." Lucas said.

"Oh really? What song?" Mason asked as they headed off for class.

"Drown In You by Daughtry. It's a good song, and I know how to play it. So it works out fine!" Lucas said with a smile.

"Good song. I hope he likes it." Mason said.

"One last thing before we go to class. I need your word that you'll keep Jon and I's relationship a secret. I told you because you're my friend and I trust you, but I still need your word. Promise?" Lucas said. "I promise. Don't worry hon. I'll keep our secret. By the way you need help on that song? Or do you want to leave the drums to the audio track?" Mason said.

"Sure. Meet me at the music building after classes today and we'll rock out for him." Lucas said.

The two said goodbye and parted for their respected classes. Lucas arrived at mathematics and breezed through that days equations exam, so he got some time to practice for music class, before English. When English came around, he had to tell the difference between pros and poetry, which annoyed him since it was a grade school level question. P.E. class was difficult since they had to run 20 laps each and set times for themselves. Lucas slowed down gradually so he would have a time to beat. All through the day he practiced in his head for music class. Biology was kind of awkward for the teacher and Lucas because of what they did the first week of school. The teacher told Lucas he would have to earn his A the hard way from now on and that his guilt would let anything else happen between them, which was fine for Lucas because he wanted to save himself for Jon anyway.

Music class finally rolled around, and Lucas was excited to perform in front of his classmates. Jon was a little late but Lucas paid it no mind. After last night, Lucas would be surprised if Jon showed up period. After a few minutes, Jon finally came through the door with some papers and his guitar, a beautiful black Gibson explorer. The drummer went first in performing, playing a song from slipknot. The base guitarist went next playing a song from Coldplay. The other guitarist went before Lucas playing a song from the Doctor who soundtrack in his own way. Mason came in just as the guitar player was finishing.

"You ready mason?" Lucas asked.

"Ready as I'll ever be. Did you practice any?" Mason asked as he took out his drumsticks.

"I got some in yes. OK. Its our turn now." Lucas said.

"Very good. All of you. Alright Lucas! Your up. What will you play for us today?" Jon asked.

"About that, I need a backup guitarist that knows "Drown in You" by Daughtry. Can you help?" Lucas asked, smiling.

"That's a good song. I know it of course but I haven't played it before. Give me a moment to listen and I can play it by ear." Jon said.

So after a few minutes, Jon was ready to play backup.

"1...2...3...4..." Mason cued.

Lucas began to sing and play, with Jon backing him up.

"There's a place where you can light the fire and watch it burn, then lay it down and lose it all, its taken me so far beyond the point of no return, gave all that I had when hope was gone...." Lucas sang.

The entire class was in a sort of trance as Lucas sang. When Lucas got to the chorus, Jon's eyes went wide in wonder at Lucas' control over his voice. As Lucas went high in voice, his facial expression stayed the exact same. One by one, more people who heard the music came to see who was singing.

The song ended on a high note, and Lucas stopped to take a breath and nearly fell over from exhaustion. John caught him and set him down on a chair.

"Phew!" Lucas said. "First time performing for an audience. So how did I do?"

The entire class, along with the lot of others who wandered in from hearing the music, applauded and cheered in response. Mason hugged Lucas and congratulated him on a grand performance. Lucas was at a loss for words as he looked at the faces of the crowd who cheered for him. All he could do was smile. He put his guitar on its stand and bowed with Jon and mason. The crowd dissipated, but a few people asked if the trio of furs were a band and if they had a CD. They all agreed that they were still deciding if they should be a band. Class was let out early thanks to all of the class doing well and earning A's for that day. Mason and Lucas stayed behind and laughed to each other about the song.

"I can't believe that many people stopped to hear us!" Lucas said.

"You did great, but I think I screwed up in the second chorus." Mason said.

"Oh shut up. You did perfect! We all did! Right John?" Mason said.

When mason and Lucas turned, they found John on his knees, clutching the left side of his chest and gasping for air. They both rushed to John and dragged him to a chair.

"John?! John say something!" Lucas begged.

"I'll get the nurse!" Mason said and rushed off.

"Screw the nurse! Call 911!" Lucas cried.

"Hello? Yes my teacher's having a heart attack! Send an ambulance to the music wing of Danforth College Now!" Mason ordered, then hang up. "Okay she said keep him breathing and talking."

"John! Baby, please say something!" Lucas cried.

"You...did...great honey..." John gasped.

"Thanks but try and relax." Lucas said stroking john's hair.

After a few minutes, sirens arrived outside the complex and mason led the paramedics to the music room. They loaded John onto a gurney and loaded him into the ambulance. Mason said he would take care of things in the classroom while Lucas went with John.

All the while John was gasping for air, and Lucas softly talked to him and kept him awake.

"John? I guess we'll have to cancel our plans for going out tonight." Lucas said

"Yeah...I guess so." John wheezed. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you about my heart problem. I had a valve replaced a year ago, and ever since then I've had heart problems."

"You should have told me baby. You scared the shit out of me." Lucas said. "Next time you have a problem with your body, you tell me. OK?" Lucas said.

"I promise." John said, then they both held each others hands.

"Excuse me, but I need to ask you a few questions. He's stable now and he can rest until we get to Danforth general Hospital." A paramedic said.

"Sure, fine." Lucas said.

"Was he doing any strenuous activities before the heart attack happened?" The bear asked.

"We were performing a song for the music class. He was on backup guitar. Could that have triggered it?" Lucas asked.

"Possibly. Playing guitar takes strength and concentration. So his heart might have over-compensated. Second, are you a family member?" The bear asked.

"I-uh...no. I'm a student and his best friend." Lucas said nervously.

"Your lying kiddo. Relax. I won't tell." The bear said with a wink.

"Fine...I'm his boyfriend." Lucas said smiling at John.

"Good for you. Now third and last, does he have any insurance?" The bear asked.

"Yes I do. Adult Medicaid Insurance." John said.

"Mr. Pierce, rest. We have all the info we need for now. We'll get more when you feel better." The bear said, smiling.

"Thank you. For helping him." Lucas said, almost crying.

"It's what I do kiddo." The bear said.

The transition into the hospital was slow and easy for John, so they wouldn't cause him much pain. They told Lucas that they were gonna do an angiogram to check for blood clots, since there was a chance that one caused the attack. The procedure took over two hours before they said they found two large clots to his heart. They removed them without any problems and said he was gonna be just fine. The two furs lied in the hospital bed for awhile before John finally spoke.

"Babe, I want you to go back to your dorm and rest." John said softly.

"What? No I wanna stay..." Lucas started.

"No buts sweetheart. You need to sleep for tonight and you also have to put the grades on the papers for the class and let the staff know I'm okay. I promise I'll call you if something happens." John said, smiling.

"Say you love me first." Lucas said playfully.

"I love you Lucas." John said.

"And I love you John. Now get some rest." Lucas said then kissed John goodbye for the night.

Lucas took a bus back to the campus. The long ride was silent except for one skunk on the phone with his wife. When Lucas finally arrived at the campus, he went straight to the music classroom and unlocked it with his copy of the key. Lucas was exhausted from the events of that day, and hurried through the grading and walked back to his dorm room. Mason met him at his door.

"How is he?" Mason asked.

"His heart attack was caused by two blood clots. The doc said he would have died if we weren't there. Did you wait here for me the whole time?" Lucas said.

"Nah. I went to get a burger first." Mason said, making them both laugh.

"Guess what? I got the new Sherlock Holmes movie on my laptop. I figured we could watch it together, you know, to cheer you up." Mason said.

"Okay. Just let me get my room straightened up. I left it a mess before I left for class." Lucas said with a wink.

Lucas cleaned his room to a point where it was spotless. He turned and mason was standing in his doorway smiling.

"Damn, John is a lucky wolf. If I wasn't so damn shy when I met you, I would have taken you for myself." Mason said.

"Why Mason! I'm Flattered." Lucas said, shaking his tail at Mason.

"Oh yeah! I found this outside your door when I got back." Mason said, holding up an envelope.

"Well what does it say, Hon?" Lucas said.

Mason opened it and his facial expression turned to one of horror.

"Um, Lucas? You're gonna want to take a look at this!" Mason said frantically.

"What? Another secret admirer?" Lucas joked.

"This isn't funny! LOOK!" Mason said.

Lucas took the note and his heart shattered when he read what it said:

I Know about your affair with John Pierce. I know you have been carrying on for quite some time. If you do not leave him, I will expose your secret of your relationship and make you watch as he dies.
