Boss hung up the phone cutting off the laughter that pealed out merrily from his cell. Cursing the mare in his head for her rotten timing he shoved the phone back in his pocket and turned just in time to hear Daisy gasp.

"Oh my gosh! Is that really what time it is!?" Daisy stared at the dashboard clock and then at him. "We're going to be late for my meeting!"

"Well, let's go!" Boss shut the car engine off and they hopped out of the car, jogging across the parking lot. Daisy was ahead of him, her hooves clicking along on the asphalt. Boss nearly lost his footing watching how she nimbly hopped over little patches of ice.

"Hurry, Boss!" Daisy called over her shoulder as she scampered up the steps and pushed her way through the big glass doors. The purple skirt she was wearing twirling around her ankles as she spun around to see how far behind he was.

"Right behind you." He grinned. She smiled back and turned to figure out which way to go next, her eyes bright and cheerful.

The lobby was set up with couches and potted trees and branching out from that was several broad hallways and two elevators. A plaque on the wall in between the two lifts had all the offices listed by floor. Daisy scanned them quickly and then hit the up arrow on both lifts.

"Wilomena Allen, her office is on the fourth floor." Daisy said as they waited for one of the elevators to arrive. Boss saw that Daisy was glancing around at the other students bustling around and could see that she was trying not to show her nervousness.

"Doing all right there?" Boss asked when she jerked slightly and sucked in a sharp breath when a group of canine students walking together came around a corner nearby. Daisy nodded, somewhat stiffly.

"Yep. I'm doing a lot better than I did last time." She admitted wryly. "Thanks for coming with me Boss." She sidled up to him and snagged his arm, her hands fitting nicely against his bicep. At the contact he felt her relax considerably, and when the door to the elevator opened they walked in together. The doors slid shut and Boss hit the button for the fourth floor.

"Boss?" Daisy asked, her head leaning on the tall dog's shoulder.

"Hmm?"

"Why are you so nice to me?" He looked down at her as the elevator lurched to a stop on their floor. She glanced up when he didn't answer right away. The doors slid open and they stepped out into a hallway that was, at the moment, empty.

"Are you saying I should stop?" Boss asked with a wink. Daisy gave him a look as they walked down the hall.

"That's not an answer..." She grumbled. Mouth open to say more she stopped abruptly and looked at the number on a door that was propped open to her left. "Oh, this is it!"

Just inside was a small sitting area with a fish tank that burbled quietly and a desk where a middle aged marten sat. The marten looked up when they walked in and squinted over her narrow reading glasses.

"Ms. Fields?" She asked and Daisy nodded.

"Yes, sorry I'm late." Daisy stepped up to the desk, slightly flustered. The marten made a small sound of dismissal and waved behind her with the pencil she held in one paw.

"Never mind that, Ms. Fields. Head on back, Mrs. Allen is in her office, she's expecting you." She directed with hardly a glance up from her computer screen. Daisy looked over her shoulder at Boss, who motioned with a tip of his nose.

"Go on, I'll wait here." He settled down in one of the chairs, and propped one foot up on his knee. Daisy shrugged out of her wool coat and handed it to him.

"Can you hold this for me?" She asked. Boss took the coat and draped it over his lap, already eyeing the magazines and career brochures for something to read.

"Sure, take your time." He smiled.

"Thanks! I'll try to be quick..." She disappeared down the short hall and then even Boss' keen ears couldn't make out the muffled words when the door to the office clicked shut behind her. He glanced at the fish tank and watched a couple fat fan tails wiggling their way through the water, navigating around the colorful plastic plants rooted in the neon purple aquarium gravel as the hum and trickle of the filter droned on in the quiet room. The only other noise was the marten secretary occasionally typing on her computer or opening and shutting a drawer in her desk. The next thing he knew, he was dozing off with his chin propped up on his fist.

Sarah groused quietly to herself as she put her wallet back into its pocket in her backpack and made her way out of the Transportation and Parking Services Office on the fourth floor of the administrations office. Fifty bucks for renewing her parking pass was ridiculous. She hadn't thought it would be that much. She only used her car if she was going out of town to see her folks, so it seemed an especially steep price for something she maybe didn't need.

"Ugh, next time it expires I'll just leave my car at home and take the bus everywhere." She said under her breath as she made her way back towards the elevators. She was slinging her back pack over her shoulder and reaching around to catch the other arm hole when a faint scent caught her attention and she stopped dead in her tracks. Daisy was in the building! Perking her stubby round ears and peering down the hall both directions she snuffled with her mouth slightly open, catching minute scent molecules in the back of her maw. She made three left turns and doubled back once before she picked up where Daisy and another person had walked by recently, fifteen minutes ago at most. The other scent was canine and Sarah grinned when she got a proper whiff of it. Chuckling she followed the trail to where it ended in the Office of Career Councilor Wilomena Allen.

"Wow, she wasn't kidding!" Sarah exclaimed at the tall white dog that was currently snoring away slumped over in the waiting area next to a small fish tank. He was gorgeous, tall, muscular, luxuriously furred. Sarah prodded at him with one claw, ignoring the dirty looks she got from crabby Mrs. Pine the marten.

"Hey! Detective Boss!" Sarah barked, shaking the law-dog's shoulder gently. Boss came awake with a start and a snort, turning bleary eyes at the badger who was shaking him.

"Whu-Whats wrong?" He blinked and rubbed at his eyes with the back of a paw, not quite awake. "Who are you?"

The female badger that stood next to his chair was grinning toothily from ear to ear, her little round eyes shining bright as marbles.

"I'm Sarah Brockley! Daisy's talking to Mrs. Allen, right?" She piped cheerfully, sticking out her paw to shake his in greeting. Boss sat up and shook her paw, still not sure what was going on. He scratched behind his ear and looked at the clock on the wall, he had napped about ten minutes. He caught the glare of the marten at her desk and straightened his posture sheepishly.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Boss turned back to the badger who was staring at him with an expression bordering on glee. Boss was just getting more confused by the second.

"I'm a friend of Daisy's, Sorry I forget sometimes to explain, I recognized your scent... well, plus, you're holding her jacket, which is covered in her scent." Sarah shrugged, rasping her claws together excitedly. "So.... One plus one... Nice to meet you! I can't tell you how excited I was when she told me about you! She's such a recluse, I was starting to wonder if she'd ever meet anyone." She plunked down in an empty seat with a wink and another happy grin.

"Recognized... ah, gotcha." Boss blinked, thinking back to staying the night at Daisy's house he wondered where Sarah could have picked up a strong scent of him and It didn't take him but a second to realize that it must have been Daisy's bed. Boss coughed to cover his embarrassment and leapt on a separate topic. "So where do you know Daisy from? I got the sense that she didn't have too many friends outside her family." He asked. Sarah nodded.

"It's true. I think I'm pretty much it." Sarah shrugged out of her backpack so she could sit back in her chair. "I've known Daisy since elementary school. Me, her, and Dahlia used to do everything together." She stopped, and smiled in a sad remembrance kind of way.

"Was Dahlia a lot like Daisy, personality-wise?" Boss asked, wondering what the other sister was like. Sarah shook her head.

"They were exact opposites. Daisy was quiet, Dahlia was always the one who talked for both of them. Dahlia was super outgoing and athletic, Daisy liked books and plants better than sports. She stood up for Daisy when they got picked on, even settled a couple fights. Daisy looked up to her." Sarah lowered her voice, looking behind her to the hall where Daisy was talking with the advisor. "It was really rough for her, when Dahlia... When Dahlia died. I think she still blames herself." Sarah murmured hesitantly.

"Hm." Boss nodded. "She's had a rough time, it's for sure."

"Guys talking about me?" Daisy's voice proceeded her down the hall as she returned, out of her meeting finally. She didn't seen surprised to see Sarah, but there was an irritated wrinkle to the edges of her nostrils. Sarah sat up and grinned like the proverbial cat with the canary.

"Always! It's because you're so very interesting." Sarah blinked innocently and Daisy gave her a look. Boss watched with amusement as the doe interrogated her friend.

"How did you find us so fast?" Daisy groused, arms crossed over her chest.

"The nose-" Sarah started, tapping her nosepad with a clawtip. Daisy waved her off, rolling her eyes.

"Yeah, yeah... the nose knows." She shook her head and sat down in the chair next to Boss, looking at both of them. Boss raised his eyebrows and tipped his chin.

"So. How'd it go in there?" He asked. Daisy's face broke into a grin.

"Mrs. Allen helped me figure out which classes I need to take for my Bachelors in Botany... here at the college." Daisy turned hopeful eyes to her friend, who clapped excitedly. "I'm hoping you still need a roommate?" Daisy asked. Sarah jumped up out of her chair and hopped up and down excitedly.

"Hell yeah!" The badger barked. "Oh, Daisy! This is gonna be great! I promise! This is such a huge step forward for you!!" Sarah turned her excitement on Boss. "I've been trying to get her to take classes in the city for two years now!"

Boss watched Daisy as she listened to her friend babble about where they would go and how awesome the teachers were, and all the neat things about living on campus. Sarah didn't see it, but Boss could tell how hard it was going to be for Daisy, in the way her cheerfulness suddenly seemed slightly forced. Her shoulders were tense and Boss reached out before he realized he was doing it, and stroked along the back of her long neck between her ears. He could feel Daisy lean into it almost microscopically.

"You know, this means you'll live practically down the street from me. My apartment building is five minutes away. The precinct is maybe ten. Get yourself a new cell phone and I'll be right there whenever you need me." Boss said. Daisy nodded.

"I know." She glanced at Sarah shyly before adding quietly. "I was counting on it, Boss." She blushed and Sarah snorted, some of the wind leaving her sails, albeit good naturedly. She studied the two of them, Boss' paw resting against the back of Daisy's neck, not believing her eyes.

"Oh, right... I've been trying for years! And it takes He-Man here all of one week to get you out of your parent's house!" Sarah slapped Boss' arm and shot him a wink. "Remember, she's my roommate. Don't hog her."

"I can't promise anything." Boss grinned as they stood and made their way out into the hall much to the relief of the marten, Mrs. Pine.

As it turned out, Sarah had spent her last fifty bucks on the new parking pass and was on her way home to microwave some top-ramen for dinner. And when she heard about Boss and Daisy's dinner plan, she practically invited herself by force. Daisy shrugged with a look on her face that advised Boss not to fight the badger in matters of the stomach. And so Boss found himself calling Dani to inform her that there would be four of them for dinner. The mare answered the phone on the first ring.

"Hardy's Catering, How may I stuff your face?" The mare purred into the phone. Boss rubbed his brow. He was getting a headache suddenly.

"Wow.... Um... I'm not even sure what to say to that, Dani." Boss paused, derailed completely. He could hear the grin in the mustangs voice when she replied.

"Mission accomplished then. What's up Bossy?" She asked. Boss could hear music thumping in the background and recognized it as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs CD that Dani had been listening to all week. Which meant she was at the apartment, hopefully cooking the dinner she promised.

"We ran into a friend of Daisy's on campus, we invited her to join us. Will there be enough for a fourth person?" Boss asked, hoping Dani would say no and he could use it as an excuse to go out somewhere to eat instead. At a nice safe public location where Dani couldn't go too crazy.

"Oh, yeah, sure! The more the merrier, I actually doubled the recipe by mistake anyway, so there's plenty. And salad is easy, we can make more." The Mare agreed cheerfully. Damn. Trapped. Boss flinched mentally, outwardly smiling and giving Daisy a thumbs up.

"Okay, well do you need us to pick anything up on the way? We're headed out now." Boss asked out of propriety. Dani was singing along with the music.

"The only thing...Na-na Na-na- The only thing I missed... only thing I messed up... I messed up the missing of you-ou!"

"Dani."

"Nouuu Mysteriiiiees..."

"DANI!!"

"Pick up more wine!" The mare finally answered him. Boss quirked an eyebrow.

"Are you kidding?" He exclaimed thinking of the cabinet where he kept the alchohol, trying to picture how much Dani had drank already. "Dani are you drunk already?" The mare laughed.

"No! No, silly....of course not. But it wouldn't be right if I wasn't at least a little buzzed. I can't cook sober, Boss, you know that! House rules!!" She giggled.

"House Rules...Oh, for the love..." He glanced at Daisy and Sarah who were watching his end of the conversation raptly. Boss sighed. "Alright. Yeah, why not, I'll probably need a drink with dinner anyway."

"Yay! Seeyousoonbye!" Dani cheered and promptly hung up on him. Boss turned to his companions.

"It's not too late to just run away." He suggested. Sarah shook her head.

"No way, man!" Sarah grinned. "Badgers never run." Boss looked at Daisy who had a broad smile and a twinkle in her eye.

"Banzai!" She raised a fist and giggled making Boss grin at how cute she was. His resolve melted and he nodded.

"Allright. Lets go!"
