#1 of Pray for Daylight

((Here's the first chapter in an ongoing series so be on the look out for more parts to come as I write them))

One: Filed under U

Her breath was ragged and came only in pants. She'd been running for what felt like hours but had in fact only been a few minutes. She could no longer see her pursuer and thought it safe to rest a moment. How wrong she was...

Detective Fredericks didn't appreciate the fact murder took place at all hours of the day. Didn't these people realize it was 4am? Still he'd been summoned so it meant that this wasn't your average killing. He didn't head the so called "Weird shit no-one else wants to deal with" unit and deal with your average everyday muggings and murders. Oh no he got the cases that were practically unsolvable.

The rabbit yawned as he approached the scene of the crime. Or course Phillips, his Vixen of a partner, was there before him and somehow had managed to do the whole bright eyed and bushy tailed thing as well.

"Hey Jason. Man you look like shit." She grinned at him.

"Yeah. Damn freaks don't sleep do they?"

"Nope. Not in this town."

"Wish they would. What've we got Phillips?"

She frowned slightly he still wouldn't call her by her first name, Maya. "Looks like a vampire. Vic's virtually bloodless. Bite marks on the neck. Virgin as well."

"In this town?"

"She's young. 15 maybe."

"Like I said in this town? How long she been here?"

"About 30 minutes. Dispatch got the call a half hour ago. Someone reported hearing screams."

"Well there's the weird factor eh? Someone actually reporting a crime."

"Do you have to be so pessimistic?"

"I was born here Phillips."

"Still...." She trailed off. He was almost impossible to talk to.

He yawned again. "Meat wagon around?"

She hated that term. "Yes. Still waiting for phorensics to finish whatever it is they're doing."

"Solving the case I hope. Vampires. Last thing I need."

"It explains the whole 4am thing though."

"I suppose."

At a more reasonable hour Fredericks sat in his office looking over the report from the lab. No fibers, no DNA, no fingerprints, no shoeprints, no nothing. This wasn't turning out to be his day. Another unsolvable case.

"Hey Phillips!"

She poked her head around the door. "Yes?"

"File this under U will you."

"U?"

"For unsolvable. No evidence other than the bite marks. Fangs. Big help that."

"We just giving up?"

"You got a better idea?"

"I knew where she was before she was killed."

"And how the hell did you find that out?"

"It's called detective work Jason. You should try it sometime."

"They don't pay me enough."

"I can see why you ended up here."

"Which reminds me. Why the hell did you get into this crap again?"

"Because I'd like to actually solve some of these files on your desk."

He looked over the large pile there. She had a point. He was slacking off ever since they moved him here. Insubordination his ass. Chief needed a boot up his ass.

"Good lu...." He stopped. "Vampires."

She blinked. "What is it?"

"The case before I got moved to this dump. Some kid was drained of his blood. I joked about how they should have a special task force for the weird shit that happens."

"Looks like you got your wish."

"Yeah couldn't have been the wish for riches and naked female felines now could it. Anyway like I was saying that's the case where I...."

"Kicked the Chief of police in the ass for trying to suppress your investigation."

"That'd be it."

"Why did he shut you down?"

"No idea. Felt I was close to a breakthrough though. Some club or something."

"Hey that wouldn't be the Deus Vitae would it?"

"Yeah. How'd...."

"It's where the girl was before she died."

"She was feline right?"

"Yes."

"So was the kid."

"Coincidence?"

"Don't believe in them."

"So what do we do now?"

"I think that whole detective work thing you mentioned sounds good about now." He smiled at her. It was time to actually get to work.
