#2 of The Duel of Legends

Schande was rather quiet on the car ride to his new home. Evan had been working on crossword puzzles in a puzzle book that he had and eating an apple, Mr. Harrison was driving, and Mrs. Harrison was jotting something down in a notebook. It was her who broke the silence.

"So tell us something about yourself, sweetie!" she piped.

Schande started at the request, but nonetheless, complied to it.

"Well, there's not much to tell. I'm 16, born on February the eighth. I lived in the orphanage for almost nine years. And....I'm a Vulpix." Schande finished off with a small giggle.

Evan looked up from his puzzle, and laughed a little.

"You're birthday is just after mine! Except I'm 17, so ha!" Evan teased.

Schande giggled, "Really? When is your birthday?"

"February the fifth!"

"Our entire family's birthdays are in February it seems!" laughed Mr. Harrison.

Schande looked at him in surprise, "Really?"

"Yep, Evan's is the fifth, Terrance's is the twelfth, yours is the eighth, and mine is the twenty-first!" said Mrs. Harrison happily.

Schande felt a sudden happy feeling at what Mrs. Harrison had said. She just said Schande was part of the family! He had never been a true part of a family before. He had to resist whooping in joy.

Schande started to study Mr. Harrison very closely. He....didn't look normal. Schande had seen Ampharos before, but Mr. Harrison looked...different, alternately colored. Mr. Harrison took notice of this and chuckled.

"You must have a lot of questions about my coloration!"

Schande started and blushed deeply, embarrassed that he was caught staring. Mr. Harrison laughed.

"No need to be embarrassed, little guy! It's natural to be curious. Well, let's see, how should I put it? All Pokemon have the ability to be differently colored. It's a recessive trait in all Pokemon gene pools. I just so happened to have been passed along that trait! However, it is incredibly rare. Even more rare, but possible, is that a Pokemon will be a completely different color than its normal or Shiny form. That's the common term for the trait, being Shiny. Now, I'm curious as well. You have a very interesting eye color! Normally, Vulpix have brown eyes. How did you get those blue eyes?"

Schande didn't know whether he should answer truthfully about his special ability. Would they think he was a freak? After pondering for a few seconds, he decided to tell the truth.

"W-well, actually, it has to do with a..." he chose the next word carefully, "...unique...ability that I have."

All of the Harrison's looked at Schande, very interested about this ability.

"Oh really? What ability would that be sweetheart?" asked Mrs. Harrison politely.

"I-I can change from a Fire to a Water type at will"

Mr. Harrison looked astounded, Mrs. Harrison looked surprised, Evan just looked confused.

"Come again?" asked Evan in mid-bite.

"I can change from a Fire to a Water type." Schande repeated.

"Astounding!" said Mr. Harrison in awe.

"Can you show us?" asked Mrs. Harrison.

The other two looked at Schande with high anticipation. Schande didn't see any harm in showing them. He closed his eyes, relaxed his muscles and cleared his mind. He imagined a raging ocean, with 20-foot waves. His eyes shot open and glowed a bright white. Evan yelled out in shock and dropped his apple to the floor. Schande's entire body soon started to glow bright white, as if he was evolving. Mr. Harrison swerved the car out of shock and had to pull over. They all stared at him in utter shock. Schande finally stopped glowing, but he looked completely different. Instead of being Orange all over with Blue eyes, he was Blue all over with fiery red-orange eyes.

Schande saw the Harrison's astonished looks, he flattened his ears and blushed deeply. They thought he was a freak, nothing else to it....

To Schande's utter astonishment, Evan clapped.

"That is incredible! Can you shoot Water Gun?" queried Evan.

Schande smiled and shot a Water Gun attack out of a window that he opened. Mr. Harrison was absolutely speechless. He started babbling like a fool.

"Th-that's utterly amazing! What an ability!"

Schande blushed deeply, "Y-you don't think I'm a freak?"

Mrs. Harrison looked incredibly taken aback.

"Why would we think you were a freak?"

Schande's ears drooped. He told his new family about his hard life in the orphanage. He told how he was teased, attacked, and tortured. He told them every last detail, except that he was gay. He just couldn't bring himself to come out to them...yet.

Schande was taken by great surprise when Evan pulled him into a tight hug.

"I can't believe they treated you so awfully! If I ever get my paws on them, I'll...!" Evan said, punching his fist into his other paw.

Mrs. Harrison started to tear up, "Oh Schande, it's a good thing we got you when we did! I don't know how much longer you could've lasted!"

Schande felt lighter than air, like he could take on the world. For the first time in his miserable life, he felt accepted, like he belonged...
