A random thingie. Yup.

Duran froze as the blade thrust through his back, protruding from his chest, and piercing his heart. The brown wolf grabbed the blade, that of a finely crafted katana, and held it in place. His strength was fading fast, but he had to give Xer the chance he needed. The blade was in the process of being pulled out when Duran felt hot blood spray the back of his neck. He let out a shaking sigh and released the blade. The form behind him fell away, pulling out the katana, and Duran fell forward to the ground. Just before his vision faded, Duran heard someone calling his name...

***Earlier That Day***

Duran stretched as he roused himself from his bed. Find his silver coated fox friend, Xer, still asleep, Duran tossed a pillow at him. "Wake up, you oaf. You've slept enough." Xer responded with a groan and a pillow in return.

Xer and Duran were in in their first year of training under Master Tulou. By training both their bodies and minds, Xer and Duran could master fighting with blade and ki. In the short time they had trained, both had learned how to handle a katana and a kama, and Xer could use his ki to enhance his speed to incredible levels. But then Tulou was murdered...

The students had, in their master's absence, adepted that which they were already taught, as they suspected that Tulou's murderer would come for them next. The students ate a hasty breakfast, then headed to the combat grounds.

"Alright, Xer, I am going for the kama this time," said Duran as he walked to the shed that housed the weapons. The grounds were flat, hardpacked dirt, the surrounding mountain vista providing the perfect area to bang weapons against each other. The traditional Japanese buildings Were the perfect touch to finish out the dojo that was the student's home. "Fine," answered Xer, "but you are still gonna loose."

For the next four hours, the pair fought, matching each other blow for blow. Their master would have been proud of them, their skill far beyond that of their rank. At the end of the session, each warrior was panting and hungry, but Xer was able to admit that Duran was very skilled at deflectly and holding his opponents blade with his kama. After a satisfying meal of rice and bread, Duran and Xer went to their rooms and meditated, focusing their ki in an attempt to gain new power.

After only 15 minutes, Xer's keen senses alerted him to an intruder nearby. Being unarmed, Xer used his ki to open the door and zipped through the air at lightening speeds to land in the weapons shed. He grabbed two katanas and a kama, then flew back to his partner...

***

As soon as I felt Xer's ki spike, I knew something was wrong. I rushed out the door, and had to immidiately duck back as four shuriken flew past my head. I turned to the source, and assumed a readied stance, when Xer was suddenly at my side. He drpped a katana and kama at my feet, then flew at the intruder with amazing speed. I quickly grabbed the sword and fastened it to my sash before grabbing the kama and sprinting after Xer.

When I reached him, he was locked in feirce combat with the intruder, a shadowy creature with no obvious animal ties. The battle was fierce and heated, sword meeting sword again and again. As I swung my kama at the intruder's exposed back, they somehow knocked Xer off his feet and swated my blade away. I growlded in defiance and swung again and again, each time failing to hit my mark. As Xer rose and rushed to my aid, the intruder produced a second blade and countered both of us, one with each blade.

We tried and tried, but every attck we launched was countered. Soon we were getting weak, slowing down from exhaustion. Finally, I made a grave error by swinging too low. The intruder guided my blade into that off Xer's, then kicked him away and turned to me. I turned my back to him, trying to grab my katana, but I was too late.

I froze as I felt the blade stab into my back, passing through my heart and emerging from my chest. In desperation, I grabbed the blade and held it firm, refusing to let the intruder pull it out. Two tugs failed to dislodge the blade as blood filled my lungs, choking me to death. A pause told me that the intruder was about to use the other sword, when I felt the hot spray of blood coat the back of my neck. I fell forward as the intruder fell back, the katana being pulled out by the action. I hit the groung and felt my life leaving me as I hard Xer call my name...

THE END. This wasn't a serious story. It popped into my head when I clicked Upload, so I justed typed. Enjoy this completely uninspired and unplanned story at your own leisure.
