A word from the author

A prologue to the upcoming "Synthetic" of which the first chapter is around about half done. I'll post that chapter when I finish it.

Creation

I opened my ears and saw darkness, the grinding noise of machinery smashing its infernal way into my ears as I blinked frantically in a panic. It was as though my eyes suddenly decided to work, but now blinded by the white light that surrounded me, I was no better off than before. My head was spinning, no words would come, as though they had all been put away and locked in cells, the key thrown away. The sound of machinery died down and I gasped heavily, the air hot and burning against my lungs as I stuggled, trying to move before I jerked back, realising the constraints that held me in place. It was then that I heard the Voice.

"... power at fifty kilowatts, twenty five, ten..." It blared out over the speakers, counting down. "... five, zero."

The restraints released as the word 'zero' echoed through the room, opening up and letting me free, but it was no use; all the energy in my body was gone, never existed, and I collapsed to the floor, panting as I tried to get onto my paws and knees. It was then that I looked down at myself, my paws covered in obsidian black fur as I scrabbled at the floor, weak and useless. I rolled onto my back and stopped, trying to stop my head from sliding back and losing all of the little control I had. I saw my chest, a coat a lighter grey fur contrasting against the majority of the obsidian fur across me. Footsteps resonated in the distance, and all I could do was lie there.

A blurry silhouette appeared in my vision above me, a shadow that had come for me. I reached out desperately with a paw, my fingers slowly outstretching and shaking as I tried to make meaning of where I was. I tried to form a word in my head, forcing with all my might to get it out and help myself. I whispered it quietly, my voice hoarse and near silent, but the figure heard me.

"Why?" I meekly pressed out of my lips, my whole body shaking as I waited for a response. The figure said nothing, pulled out a small, protruding object in his paw and pointed it at me. I saw the flash from it and his body lit up, I finally saw who he was. Then my mind went blank, silent a fraction of a second as the shockwave reached my ears, my vision now as obsidian as my fur.
