The Guard Post Nothing exciting happens at an army guard post. Maybe a visitor now and then. But during one rainy night, two guards are faced with a dangerous intruder....

Contains: werewolf, shooting, 3210 words. Caution: blood and gore, bad language.

Wow, it has been almost a year since I wrote something. Well, this one came out of nowhere! It just popped into my mind and I started to write. Strange, isn't it? Hmm... I should go to bed now: it's 3:45AM now... 0_o Oh btw, this time no TF for you guys. Although.... Naah, just read it! xD

"So, how is she?"

"What do you mean?"

Cason grinned. "How is she IN BED?" Excitedly, he stared at me anticipating for a response.

"Moaaaah..." I hesitated, not returning the stare and instead keeping my gaze into the dark night.

"Oh come on, please tell."

"She sleeps." I turned to him.

"Don't be silly!"

"Well, IN BED. That's what you asked." I replied and gazed back to the front again.

"Ok, I'll be clear this time. Is the sex awesome or does it suck?"

"Hmmm..."

Cason chuckled. "Hihihi... sex... suck... You get it? Hehehe."

Usually I would ignore his chuckling; he always laughed at his own bad jokes. But this time I decided to reply on it since we were both standing out here doing nothing.

"Ok then, what if I would say that it sucks? Would it then still be good?" I said, turning to him, I raised my eyebrows.

Pondering, Cason plucked his chin. "That's actually a good one... I have to think about this one."

"Take your time, I doubt that there's much more to do here anyway."

He kept staring at the ground, looking for an answer. I on the other hand felt a few drops falling on my hand.

"Hey look, there's actually something happening." I pointed to the dark sky.

"Rain. At least it's something." He commented.

"Not something that I welcome. Come on, let's go inside."

Cason and I entered the small guard house, putting our rifles against the desk and sitting down on the two folding chairs. Just in time, since after we sat down, rain started to poor from the sky, ticking relentlessly against the corrugated iron roof as it was being battered by thousands of drops.

"Oof, just in time!" He said.

I kept silent and gazed at my reflection on the windows, the reflection reinforced by the tube lighting from the ceiling.

"Now, where is that coffee machine?" He looked around.

"You want coffee?" I asked, laying back, putting my feet wearing combat boots on the desk and folding my arms.

"No duh." He pulled open two closets, only to find old reports in archives, planning and action schemes and a broken desk lamp.

"Well, unfortunately they took it away." I noted.

"What? Awww... How are we going to survive this terribly boring and lonely night?"

"YOUR terribly boring and lonely night." Snickering, I closed my eyes and tried to sleep.

He sighed in reply.

"Hey? Hello?" The general asked me while I was standing in the courtyard. I found the general strange, because although he was screaming at me, it sounded very distant.

"Heey."

I wanted to reply and say 'Sir?' but nothing was coming out from my mouth.

"HEY!! WAKE UP!" The general suddenly pushed me. Instead of stumbling, I found myself falling from the chair, landing on my side.

"Jesus Christ!! What the hell is happening?!" I yelled while I hurriedly scrambled up.

"There's someone outside." He replied.

"Wait. What?" I sighed. "How many times have I told you not to wake me up like that?" I scolded him, although still confused. Then I looked outside through my reflection in the window.

"I can't see anybody out there, but someone is pushing at the button at the gate the whole time and the microphone is not working because it's wet." He noted.

Then I noticed the buzzing noise and the flickering LED at the speaker and microphone on the desk.

I sighed. "The damn lamppost at the gate is broken. I'll take a look." I grabbed a helmet, torch and a rain cape from a rack. Reluctantly, I opened the door and stepped into the pouring rain.

"Do I need to report it?" Cason asked while holding his radio.

"No, I'll handle this." Switching on the torch, I scurried towards the gate. I pointed the torch at the gate, and through the rain and bars, I saw a silhouette.

"HOW CAN I HELP YOU?" I screamed through the rain, while raindrops rang my metal helmet continuously.

There was no response.

Cautiously, I approached the gate. I regretted that I hadn't bring my rifle with me because I definitely didn't trust this. But on the other hand, I didn't fancy on cleaning my whole rifle again since the damn thing would jam at every speck of dust, grain of sand or drop of water.

"HELLO? WHO THERE?" I yelled through the bars of the gate.

Suddenly a man crashed into the gate in front of me, his face only a few inches away from mine and his hands holding the bars.

"Let...me.... in..." He whispered in a groggy voice.

"WOW!!" I jumped back. "SIR!" I yelled at him terrified.

"Please..." He begged, looking into the bright beam of light from my torch.

"SIR! I'm asking you; do NOT touch the gate."

He moved one step backwards from the gate. "Please... I beg you..."

Satisfied, that it was safer now, I replied. "I'm sorry sir. I know that it's raining like hell now, but I can't let you in here."

"It's not that. It is... It's me..."

"Excuse me sir?" I squinted my eyes.

"Please, lock me in one of your barracks...I beg you."

"Sorry sir, but visiting hours are only from 9AM 'till 5PM for visitors."

"I... I am a soldier as well!" He blurted out.

I sighed. Was I standing in this cold rain for an idiot who forgot his stuff at the barracks?

"Well, why didn't you say so earlier, I'm not standing in this rain for fun you know. Show me your military ID."

We both approached the gate, each from the opposite side. Nervously, the man handed over an ID.

I shone the torch at the ID-card. Shortly, I was blinded from the bright light, but then I saw his rank. This guy was a lieutenant.

"I'm sorry Lieutenant. No personnel under the rank of Major is allowed to enter the premises."

"But you don't understand!! I must... This is an emergency!!"

"As far as I can see, I don't see any emergencies. Now please, leave."

"NO! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!" He yelled. "YOU MUST LET ME IN!!!" He started banging at the bars.

"Sir!!"

"LOCK ME IN!!"

"Screw this." I cursed, and I scurried back to the guard house.

"What's all the racket?" Cason asked.

"Some lunatic lieutenant is trying to force his way in." I answered.

"Lieutenant?"

"Yeah, but for the same money his ID could be counterfeit. In anyway, I'm going to show him the butt of my gun or else even the barrel." Annoyingly, I grabbed my rifle and rushed out into the rain again.

Arriving at the gate, I found the area to be deserted. I slowly shone the torch through the bars out of the base, but there was no movement at all except rain. I shrugged, before I hurried back inside the guard house.

"He's gone alright." I said, while I put my wet rifle on the table, my wet helmet, rain cape and torch on the rack.

"You showed him your gun?" He smiled.

"Naah, he was gone before I could."

"Afraid of you huh?" He grinned.

"Shut up!" I smiled and sat down. "Now... for some coffee..." I reached under the table and grabbed my backpack.

"What? Coffee?" He asked.

I didn't reply, but instead showed him the thermos and winked.

"But... but you said there was no coffee?"

"I only said that there is no coffee machine." I chuckled and opened the thermos, pouring the content into a cup.

"Aww... That's not fair! I didn't know that there was no coffee machine in the first place. Else I would've taken my own thermos with coffee too!"

"Well, I did." I paused. "I did as in knowing and taking." I winked again and took a sip from my coffee. "Aaaaaah..." I relaxed and gazed outside, noticing that the rain had stopped. "Look, it has stopped raining."

"Yeah..." He mumbled, still staring at my thermos.

"Hmm... Why didn't that lunatic push the button like now, when it's NOT raining." I sighed.

"Don't whine at me, you still at least have your coffee."

"True. I bet you want some coffee as well."

"Oh that would be nice." He smiled.

"I don't have a second cup though. Maybe there's one in the closet."

My colleague rose from his chair and opened the closet.

"There's none."

"I knew that already." I said.

"Damn you, you're mean. You know that?"

"I knew that already as well." I snickered. "But I also know that you can use other things than a cup."

"Oh shut up, everything is locked at the base so I can't fetch a cup from the cafetaria."

"I didn't say you had to search for an alternative cup, just an alternative." I suggested.

He was thinking again, but couldn't come up with anything.

"Your helmet." I hinted.

"What?" He scowled.

"You could use your helmet. Take out the inside garment and you could use the outside shell as a bowl. Or cup if you wish."

"Naah. I don't want to dirty my helmet."

"You could rinse it next to the cafetaria. There's a water tap outside in the alley."

"Aaaaaah! Now you're saying!"

"Exactly!" I winked while I watched him dismantling his helmet.

"It's dirty..." He showed the dusty inside while I took another sip from my cup of coffee. "I guess I'll just rinse it first..." He grabbed his rifle and torch, before exiting the guard house with his helmet's shell.

I just shrugged.

Not soon after, I emptied the cup, gulping down the coffee. I wondered if I should drink the rest of the coffee as well and tease him for dismantling and washing his helmet for nothing. I am mean, but I found that a bit too mean. He could have some coffee and in return he could go check out the gate the next time it's raining.

Suddenly, I heard something crashing into the fence outside.

"Cason?" I asked out loud. "Come on, stop it. I know I've been teasing you, but this isn't funny!" I said while I stepped outside with my rifle and torch.

However, there was no sound or movement, except for the dripping noise from drops falling from the side of the roof, fence, gate and wet trees. Drops from the roof trickled onto my helmet, uniform and rifle. Luckily the rain clouds had moved away and were replaced by the full moon. With the pale lunar light, I could see much further in the dark.

Again there was a crash. This time I could see the fence shaking. Hundreds of drops fell from it to the ground.

Hmm... There was someone trying to get in...

I grabbed my radio. "Cason, get your arse over here. There's someone..." But I interrupted my message when I heard my own crackling voice from inside the guard post. The idiot must have forgotten his own radio on his way to the cafetaria.

No time to fetch him now, not now that I can catch the intruder red handed.

I ran down the fence, clutching the torch beneath the steady barrel of my rifle.

Then I stopped. Cautiously I approached the hole in the fence. I would even call it a homemade gate, since it was practically torn down. At the wet ground, I could see that the intruder had first tried to dig under the fence, but that would be futile since these fences went as deep as 2 feet. Then the intruder probably decided to do it the hard way...

He probably didn't pass through the hole a long time ago, so he had to be nearby.

I searched the cut wet grass for footprints. Then I noticed the enormous canid pawprints.

"Daaamn... Big dog..." I mumbled. I had to be careful now; I had seen dogs from the K9 unit in action. You really didn't want to mess with an aggressive dog.

There was one good thing about the big dog however. Because of the deep pawprints, I could easily track down the perpetrator. But however, there was some nagging feeling that there was something missing.

I ignored it and followed the tracks with my heavy combat boots sloshing into the wet grass. After a couple of yards, I noticed that the tracks led deeper into the base. For some reason, the intruder and the dog kept on the grass. Then I realized that the tracks were leading towards the cafetaria.

"Cason..." I whispered afraid. I started running.

Although I was in a hurry to warn Cason in time, I didn't want to take any chances, so I would stop and check at every corner. There was still a chance that I would be meeting the trespassers first.

My worry was justified. Just when I past a corner, I heard sloshing footsteps. I immediately froze. As quietly as possible I backed to the corner again in case I would have to take cover when under fire. With slow sloshing sounds I moved backwards. I looked at my boots, wishing that I could move less noisy.

Then it hit me. I looked at my own tracks and the pawprints. The footprints of the owner of the dog were missing. There was no intruder. There was only this.... I was still wondering whatever it could have been when I heard growling from around the corner up ahead.

I shivered. What the hell was that? I asked myself while I took aim at the corner.

There. I could see it. Lit by the full moon, a huge creature appeared from the corner, padding slowly. It halted and stared at me. I stared back through the sights of my rifle with the grain resting on the canid's forehead.

Dreadful seconds crept past, taking ages. Suddenly it bared its sharp glistening fangs and growled. But before it could jump, my trained instinct pulled the trigger.

CLICK!

My rifle jammed! Not enough time to unjam the rifle, I turned and ran! My heart was racing, while I sprinted through the wet grass, pieces of dirt and grass flying up behind me from my sloshing boots. Not far behind me I could hear the quick pace of running paws. I had to go inside somewhere to lock out the beast, but I knew that every building in the complex was locked. The guard house was my only option.

I turned corner after corner trying to lose it, but every time it knew which direction I went. Soon I was at the fence, sprinting down its length. The thing was gaining on me and I knew it.

A short peek around my shoulder warned me that it was jumping right at me for the kill. If it weren't for the hole of the fence, I would be dead in the following second. Just in time, I veered sideways through the hole, causing it to miss me. However, I tripped over the hollow, dug by the beast during its first attempt to pass the fence. I crashed with my face and rifle into the wet grass at the other side of the fence.

I looked up to see that the wolf... a wolf? The wolf had quickly recovered from the miss and turned around to go for the hole in the fence. I turned around onto my back and shielded myself with my rifle in front of me just in time when the large wolf jumped straight at me.

"AAARGH!!!" I screamed as the wolf crashed into me, sending us sliding through the wet muddy grass. The slide had caused the wolf's jaws to miss my neck and I frantically used the moment to push the wolf with my rifle. However, the wolf had no intention to let me go that easily. It growled and snarled loudly while it threw its full weight onto my rifle and arms. The muzzle with rows of sharp fangs snapped at me wildly while strings of saliva flew out onto my chest and face. I was quickly losing this battle and its muzzle was soon only inches away from neck. It got hold of my uniform and pulled at the radio in the chest pocket in an attempt to get my neck closer to his jaw.

Just when I thought to be experiencing my last moments of my life I heard two gunshots.

PAT PAT!!!!!

I pulled my arms in to take cover. This allowed the wolf to gain full advantage over me, but the two rounds hitting its sides, caused the wolf to miss and bite into my shoulder.

"YAAAARGH!!!" I screamed in agony while the wolf pulled at my shoulder. I was thrashing wildly around me to get the wolf's jaws out from my collarbone and shoulder.

RAPAPAT!!!!! A second salvo echoed through the base.

Again, the wolf was hit, but it was determined to make his kill and it shook my shoulder wildly to the left and right.

RAPAPAT RAPAPAT RAPAPAT!!!! Three salvos made the wolf stumble backwards from me, but not after it cut through my arm, chest and side with its sharp claws.

RAPAPAT RAPAPAT RAPAPAT RAPAPAT RAPAPAT PAT!!!!

A rain of bullets flew towards the now fleeing wolf.

My eyes, full with tears of agony, glimpsed at the running wolf disappearing into the night.

"You alright?!!" Cason dropped his now empty rifle and ran towards the fence.

I moaned of pain and held the heavily bleeding wounds with my other not wounded arm.

Cason sprinted through the hole and sat next to me. Then he pulled out his jacket and pushed it onto my shoulder. "Jeeze...."

Numb, I just stared at his shocked face.

"Damnit... We need help. Where's my radio?" He searched his pockets.

"Hehe... urrrgh... You... you forgot it.... idiot." I moaned.

"How about yours?" Cason grabbed my radio, only to discover it was broken. "Hold on there, I will be right back! Don't forget to keep pressure on your wound!" He stood up and ran away.

"Cason.... I... I feel so cold..." I moaned silently while I watched him running towards the guard house.

I turned my head into the dark night. Again, my eyes were filled with fear when I saw a pair of blue eyes looking at me from the distance.

I stared back. For a few seconds we stared at each other like this.

Then the wolf turned and the pair of glowing blue eyes were gone.

What are you?
