Wake-Up Call - Part of a larger story

Before you read, this is part of a larger story I've been working on. These two chapters are part of my entry for a contest on another forum, I've been wanting to post on SoFurry for a long time so, here ya go.

There it was again, that familiar whistling...

BOOM!

"C'mon, wake it and shake it! Ivan's bringin' your bacon!" The Lieutenant yelled. I was sleeping in the back of a burnt out Russian lorry. I immediately grabbed my rifle and ran for the defensive position down the street we had set up the night before. In the old house a met my squad. 2nd Lieutenant Hayes, my CO, was fiddling with Corporal Oppums radio, trying to get a hold of Bravo Company, who was carrying all the battalions extra ammo, he was worried about a possible counterattack. "Hey, you guys hear that?" I shouted over the sound of mortars impacting the street in front of us. I thought I heard something that sounded like one of our fighter-bombers and looked up. When i did, I saw Russian anti-air fire flying over the buildings in front of us. I heard an explosion and I saw something that hit me in like a punch in the face, I saw a Grumman F-B 2 spiraling towards the ground far ahead of us outside the town, missing a wing. As soon as the mortars stopped we stood up and looked out the windows again.

"Did anyone see a parachute?" asked Reeves in a quiet voice.

"No." I said.

"Shit" said Reeves, sighing.

We slowly walked out of our hiding place with weapons drawn, we knew the Russian 38th Guards Rifle Division was still in the area. We were hoping they wouldn't show up again, we were fighting them all last night during the drop. The 38th preferred to raze everything to the ground before moving in to mop up. And when they got to whatever position they had pounded to pieces, they were very brutal, paticularly towards our 42nd Division soldiers. When my unit was in Korea holding a small town just outside of Pyongyang, towards the end of the fighting the North Korean military was getting desperate, they asked for reinforcements from Russia. They sent the 38th Guards. The Russians took the town from us and we had to retreat, all we could do was watch from the hills. They beat and tortured everybody, they didn't even kill them, they were tortured and left to die after the Russians were done destroying our equipment.

As we walked out onto the street, some of us who saw action there were flooded with memories, all terrible. "We need to find those mortars sir." said Jenks.

"I agree. Keenan, I want you to set up with Sergeant Hostetler in the church tower, see if you can locate the enemy reinforcements, we'll worry about the mortars. Jenks, grab some more of that 7.62mm for

that MG-3 you found, ditch that crappy SAW, we're gettin' those mortars." said Hayes

Going Hunting

We searched the outskirts of the town first, not a thing changed since last night, burnt bodies, bomb craters, spent shell casings and empty magazines and ammo cans littered the ground. Slowly making our way across the field into the trees, Jasper caught our attention. "What did you find Jas'?" I asked. "Take a look at this poor bastard" he says. I look at the bunker he is pointing to, and i read whats left of the sign on it, it says:

'Utilities Shed A2'

'Warning, High Voltage Emergency Generators, Keep Door Closed, Authorized Personnel Only.'

Then I look at the inside of the bunker. The roof is missing and it had rained the night before, I looked down and see a Russian soldier burnt almost to a crisp laying in at least 6 inches of water, he had been electrocuted. He had probably taken shelter in here during the pre invasion bombing runs. "Shocking, isn't it?" said Jasper with a smile.

Continuing into the trees, we spread out, 12 meters apart. When we came to a road, and a very large hedgerow on the other

side of said road, we gathered at its base. "Ready?" asks Hayes. We all nod and push through the hedgerow at the same time, which a few seconds later I realized that easily could've killed us all. We started taking massive amounts of fire from a large concrete bunker as soon as we showed ourselves. I immediately ran for a bomb crater in front of me. As I reached the edge, a bullet grazed my Kevlar helmet, my head jerked hard to the right and I fell, hard, into the crater. I shut my eyes for what seemed like a few seconds lying on the bottom of the crater and when I opened them, Oppum was shaking my shoulders. "Wake up Sarge! C'mon!" he shouts. I find my helmet on the ground next to me, I put it on. "I'm okay Corporal, just dazed." I say. I notice Jenks jump into the crater with us. "Jenks, I need covering fire, I'll distracted the machine gunner so Reeves can get a shot in!" I shout over the gunfire. "I gotcha Sarge! On my go!" he pauses. "Go!" He stands up and sprays the bunkers firing port, I get up and circle right to get to the side door. The enemy MG turns to fire on me, and just like I thought would happen, Reeves puts a .30-06 into his skull. I get to the doorway, heart pounding, adrenaline rushing, I lean into the doorway of the bunker and promptly killed a soldier trying to load his shotgun. Another enemy machine gunner leans out from his hiding place and sprays his PKM down the short hallway, chipping away at the reinforced concrete. I throw a grenade and run in after I hear the explosion and take cover behind a supply crate. I hear Russians screaming in the back rooms: <Dmitry, Jakov! Take the mortar rounds! And you three, take positions in the dugout!>

I see my squad moving up outside, I run out and tell them there are soldiers in the dugout out back covering the mortar teams retreat. We then split up to take them out. "Oppum, on me!" I say. The rest of the squad goes around the other side of the bunker to wait for me to throw a grenade, that's their signal to fire. A few seconds later, BOOM! We all storm the dugout at once and turn the soldiers into swiss cheese. "This is definitely the place, look." says Carmine. We see him pointing to empty 60mm mortar round crates. Oppums radio then comes to life.

*static* "Bravo 2, this is Sierra 2, pick up, over." *static*

Lieutenant Hayes gestures for me to take the handset from Oppums radio.

*static* "This is Bravo 2, Sierra 2 go ahead." *static*

*static* "We are tracking a heavily armed company size unit heading in your direction, break, *static* we are waiting for vehicles to come closer, break, fog is making things difficult, break, we will take out the mortar teams for you, over." *static*

Before I replied, I heard the boom of her 18mm anti-material rifle in the distance.**

*static* "Interrogative, what do you advise we do, over?" *static*

*static* "Dig in, no time to run, over" *static*

*static* "Wilco Sierra, out." *static*

"What's the word Sergeant?" asks Hayes. "We're screwed, heavily armed company size unit moving in to wipe us out, no time to run." I say. "What about the mortar teams?" he asks. "Keenans' taking care of it" I said. We then heard engines in the distance, Hayes looked through his binoculars and swore from A to Z. "Shit! We got a T-110 Medium headed our way! Take cover now! Don't move a muscle!"

**I can draw her rifle for you if you want to see it, that thing is a beast.

Thanks for reading. If you want more, say something and I will post, but I'll be starting from the beginning. Also I'm not an experienced writer so if you have suggestions they are welcome.

***EDIT***

As pointed out by otakuman, I wasnt clear on who 'her' was. I forgot that this is about halfway through the story and I havent posted anything else yet. So, 'her' is 2nd Lieutenant Elizabeth 'Liz' Keenan. She is in a sniper team with her longtime friend Sergeant Steph Hostetler. Their callsign is Sierra 2.
