#4 of An average day

The next morning Tom woke up before Abby as usual. The sun was not up for long before Tom was making breakfast for himself and Abby. Even though she was still sleeping he knew the smell of bacon would get her to the kitchen like a dog chasing a cat. Tom was wearing his favorite blue shirt and loose jeans, his hair however was still a mess, a clear case of Morning hair‚. As Tom was cooking the bacon he heard footsteps upstairs and smirked.

So predictable...

As he placed his omelet on the table along with the bacon he saw Abby walking into the kitchen wearing the fiery red top and dark orange pants he had bought her the other day. She practically drooled on the spot on the sight of the bacon and sat down, emptying the plate in record time. As Tom ate his omelet, Abby finished and sat back sighing happily.

"I could eat that bacon until the day I died and then I'd still eat it!"

This statement made Tom smile.

"Oh really? I haven't noticed."

Abby and Tom laughed together. Tom continued to eat his omelet until he looked up and noticed that Abby was staring at him with a strange look in her eyes.

"Abby? Something wrong?"

This clearly took Abby by surprise as she stopped staring and blushed again thanking her red fur for hiding it.

"No no, it's fine. I was just wondering-"

"Yes?"

"When I was in the garage I couldn't help but notice that you had a hunting rifle stored there. Are you a hunter?"

"Oh God no, but my father was. When I was a child he taught me how to use it. I hated it, but like every small boy I wanted to make my old man proud. I have good memories of our hunting trips and I just couldn't throw away the rifle my dad gave me. I haven't used it for a long time and I don't plan on using it soon."

"I see."

Tom finished his breakfast and began to do the dishes. As he filled the sink with water Abby asked if she could help. He gladly accepted and gave Abby a towel to dry the plates, glasses and other assorted cutlery. When they had finished doing the dishes Tom and Abby moved to the living room to watch some TV. Tom sat on the couch and Abby laid her head on his lap. Afraid to hurt her feelings Tom decided to let it slip secretly enjoying the feeling of her soft fur, even through his jeans.

Suddenly Abby sat bolt upright, ears perked up and looking around like a scared pup. Before Tom could do anything she sprang up and ran towards to window facing the woods.

"Abby! What are you doing?"

Tom scrambled to his feet and followed Abby to the window. Her face was a picture of pure terror, and she was obviously in a frantic state. Tom reached to Abby and held her, trying to calm her down.

"Abby, what's wrong? What's going on?"

Abby calmed a bit, but still was shedding tears as she met Tom's gaze.

"They're here, they're going to take me away again!"

"Who's 'they'?"

Abby pointed outside and Tom saw a man in a blue suit and sunglasses standing just outside the forest line, completely motionless and silent.

"The insurance guys? Why would they take you away?"

Abby started crying some more and clung to Tom's chest sobbing.

"They'll experiment on me and do horrible things, I don't want to go back!"

Tom couldn't believe his ears. Why would they want to do that to her?

[Just outside]

The man in the blue suit reached for his earpiece as he saw his target through the window.

"Walker 1355 calling in, I got a visual on the target at my current location. I repeat, I got a visual on the target at current location. All Handlers get ready for battle."

As soon as the man stopped speaking a few men in what appeared to some sort of leathery armor got out of the forest and stood next to the man in the blue suit.

"So this was the place huh? Was she alone in there, Sir?"

"Negative, it seems a guy lives there as well. Headquarters are checking him but he's of no use to us and most likely a liability."

The man in the armor nodded briefly.

"So when we going in, Sir?"

"Soon."

[Inside the house]

"Abby, why would they do that to you?"

"Because they want something from me, something they can't have. We've got to get out of here!"

"Isn't that a bit harsh? I mean I could try to reason with them-"

As soon as Tom spoke these words, Abby held him tight, not letting him go.

"NO! Don't go out there! They'll kill you! Please don't, please!"

Shocked by her reaction Tom rubbed her back trying to calm her.

"All right, all right. But I won't let them simply take you away. If they really are looking for a fight then they'll get one."

"No! You can't defeat them! They'll k-"

A finger on her lips stopped Abby; she looked into Tom's eyes and saw calmness and steely determination.

"Don't worry, I don't plan on dying but I won't go down without a fight. Get in the kitchen and hide under the table, I'll take care of those men outside."

"But-"

"No buts! I won't let them take you but this was my house and if they want to get inside they'll have to get past me first."

Abby began to cry again, but smiled whilst she did so, hugging Tom and rubbing her fur against him as Tom returned the hug. He broke the hug and led Abby to the kitchen making sure she hid under it and instructing her to use the secret hatch that was there to escape.

"Where does it lead to?" asked Abby.

"It leads to shed a mile away from here, in the shed was a car. I figured if something happened I could get out fast and get to the city. Now stay here and when things go silent, wait for a minute and then run. All right?"

Abby responded with a nod and Tom helped her into the secret passage closing it and concealing it with a small carpet. He runs to the garage and gets his hunting rifle and some ammo lying next to it. He loads the gun and runs back to the window seeing the man in the suit talking to two other guys in some sort of armor.

"I don't know who you people are but when you're after Abby to hurt her you can't be that nice. Looked like I'll have to make sure you won't harm her again.

Tom takes aim and places his finger on the trigger hoping he still had it.

[Outside]

The man in the blue suit nodded listening to his earpiece and then turned towards the two men next to him.

"All right you two, get into position. The other Handlers are here and standing by."

The men nodded and along with a dozen other men in similar armor surrounded the back of the house ready to get inside. The man in the suit reached for his earpiece and spoke to all of them at once.

"Listen up, the target was inside and we want her alive. So use normal weaponry only, the human with her was a liability and must be killed. And remember to get the girl ALIVE! Now move in!"

The armored men walked towards the house until suddenly a gunshot was heard and one man dropped to the ground with a huge chunk of his head blown off. The other men immediately fall retreated to the forest line and hide from sight.

"Sir! Handler 144 was dead; he has been shot. Permission to use the-"

The man in the suit immediately interrupts the man before he can finish the sentence.

"NO! We can't risk killing the girl by accident, return fire with your guns! But aim for the human!"

"Copy Sir, all units return fire!"

They all rose at the same time, but before they could fire another shot was heard and another armored man dropped dead to the ground as another bullet went straight through his heart. Immediately after that the ten other men returned fire with M16s, aiming for the window where the shot came from. After a few seconds they stopped firing, and hid again, not sure whether the gunman had been killed or not.

The squad leader signaled one man to get closer to investigate. The guy slowly crawled closer and closer without a gunshot being heard. As he reached the window, however, he rose to look in and was greeted with the sight of Tom holding a gun right in front of him, and pulling the trigger.

The nine remaining men saw the scout fall to the ground, a gaping hole in his chest from the gunshot and returned fire again forcing Tom to duck for safety. Not wanting to risk anything they started to move closer while one man kept firing at the window, covering his allies. As the eight men reach the back door they heard a loud gunshot, looked behind them and saw the man covering them dead on the ground.

"All right men, we can't use guns for risk of harming the girl, switch to close combat weapons and secure the house. Go!"

The front guy kicked the door in and all eight of them moved inside quickly, securing the living room. When they were certain that the room was clear they spread out into groups of two and began to search the house.

[Closet ground level]

Tom tried to keep his breathing as shallow and quiet as possible while he waited for the perfect moment to jump out. He counted eight men as they burst into his house and he grabbed his katana on the way to the closet. With the door ajar he waited and saw two men slowly pass the closet. As he studied them he saw they were not carrying guns.

No arms at all? Either they are stupid, suicidal or they have some trick up their sleeve...

Tom decided to take the gamble and jumped out of the closet with his katana raised and cut one of the two men in the chest making him scream in pain as he was kicked by Tom and collapses on the ground, bleeding. The second guy turned around only to be impaled on the katana making him gasp for air and cough up blood before he collapsed on the ground.

Tom looked down at the two dead men in a pool of blood. He heard footsteps behind him, turned around and what happened next was something he was not prepared for.

Behind him was another man swinging his fist at him but the fist itself was glowing blue. As the punch connects Tom was hit on the chest and sent flying backwards until he hits the wall leaving a mark on the wall and being in pain from the blow.

What the hell was THAT?

The man didn't give Tom a chance to comprehend what had happened, but charged at Tom with his glowing fists. Tom recovered from the sudden blow, ducked the fists and cut the men across the chest nearly cutting him in half as he dropped dead next to Tom covering him in his blood.

As Tom gets up he was punched in the stomach making him bend over in pain.

Damnit, forgot they are in teams of two.

Right after he was punched he was kicked in the face making him fall to the ground hard and losing grip on his katana. As he looked up he saw the man responsible swinging a piece of furniture at him. Tom was barely able to roll aside dodging the furniture but was kicked in the side right after making him grunt in pain as he was repeatedly kicked making him curl up on the floor to try and protect his face and abdomen.

Content the men picked up the katana and lifted it up preparing to bring it down on the injured Tom.

This is it-only a miracle can save me now.

As the men brought down the sword he was suddenly hit in the side by a purple orb sending him flying towards the wall exploding on impact obliterating the man. Tom looked at the hole in the wall and then looked where the orb came from and spots Abby standing in the doorway with her hand glowing purple.

She runs to Tom and helps him up and they run to the kitchen, with no time to talk both don‚t talk as they quickly escape through the hatch before being noticed by the other men still in the house. Abby supports Tom as they walk through the tunnel while Tom was in shock from what Abby did back in the house.

"Abby, how did you-and what-"

Abby sighed as she continued to support Tom through the tunnel.

"The truth is, Tom, I didn't run away from bad owners. I escaped a test facility where they held me prisoner. What you just saw was what you would call magic. They call it 'The Spark'‚ and its given to people by genetics."

Tom didn't talk aside from the occasional grunts of pain.

"They tap my blood and do tests so they can use it themselves. After some time they were able to genetically manipulate their men and train them how to handle The Spark. But since the magic was acquired like that, The Spark was weaker for them then it was for those who got it through heritage. They performed experiments to make it more powerful, painful experiments."

They reached the end of the tunnel and entered a shed where she helped Tom to sit down and sat next to him leaning against his shoulder.

"So those guys-they are the people who made that trap?"

"Yes, I managed to escape one day and after running for a week straight I got here and into that trap, it was made of magic, so I couldn't destroy it. If it weren't for you I would have been captured and brought back by now. Thank you Tom, for everything."

Tom put an arm around Abby and hugged her softly sideways.

"Hey, you saved my ass there with that magic of yours. Thank you."

"But now you have no house, you are hurt and on the run all because of me. Its all my fault that this was happening to you."

As Abby began to sob Tom rubbed her side making her look up to him and see that he wasn't angry at all, but that he was smiling.

"What happened to me happened because I wanted to do it. You are my friend Abby and I have no regrets of what I did. I would do it all over again if I could."

Abby stopped sobbing and hugged Tom tightly nearly crushing him.

"Abby, it's not that I dislike this but I can't breathe"

"Oh, sorry." Abby said, looking like a child caught with a hand in the cookie jar.

"It's all right but we have to get going. It won't be long before those other guys find that hatch and I don't want to be here when that happens. Help me up please"

Abby helped Tom up and guided him to the white Audi Q7 SUV model.

"Help me into the driver's seat."

"You want to drive in your condition?" Abby said a bit louder then she had intended.

"Can you drive an SUV?"

"..."

"I thought so. Now help me in the seat so we can get out of here."

Abby helped Tom into the driver's seat and made sure he was sitting as comfortably as possible before walking around to get into the passenger seat. Tom starts the SUV and Abby noticed that the shed was still closed.

"Umm Tom, shouldn't you-"

Tom floored it and rammed the shed door like it was paper reducing the wooden doors to tiny bits.

"...Never mind."

Tom grunted in pain. His driving skills were clearly affected by his injuries. He was having to put much more effort into keeping the SUV stable.

[Back in the house]

The men in the blue suit were standing in the hall looking at the hole in the wall and the three corpses of the men lying in a pool of blood.

"So, you are going to tell me eight of your men were killed by one human and a little girl? And they even managed to escape unseen? Do you have any idea how this will look towards the boss?"

"We underestimated the human, Sir, it won't happen again," said the squad leader, fiddling with his jacket nervously.

"Indeed, squad leader, it won't ever happen again."

The man in the suit grabbed the squad leader's throat and lifts him in the air when suddenly a man runs into the room.

"Sir! We found a secret tunnel leading away from here in the kitchen. The two other men are going through the tunnel in pursuit."

"Well, it seems you've been given a second chance squad leader; you won't get a third."

The man in the suit let go of the squad leader who fell to the ground and quickly stood up coughing, before rushing as quickly as he could towards the secret passage.

"Squad leader, the two men have sent a report that there was a shed where a heavy model car was standing, they most likely drove off heading east towards the nearby city."

"Call reinforcements to pursue them and get us a vehicle a.s.a.p.!"

"Yes Sir!"

[Somewhere on the road]

Tom and Abby were heading towards Glutter City as fast as it was possible to with an injured driver.

"How far away is the city Tom?"

"At this speed about an hour, I can't go faster or I might lose control of the SUV. Luckily the road's nearly empty at this hour."

After ten minutes of silence Abby turned towards Tom.

"Tom-"

"Yes?"

"Aren't you mad I didn't tell you about my magic earlier?"

Tom gave her a reassuring smile.

"Nah, I would have done the same. You didn't know if you could trust me and even afterwards it would have only made things complicated. And besides, it's kind of awesome you know powerful magic. So what can you do with your powers anyway?"

"Well, I can hurl orbs that explode when they hit something hard, I can move objects of certain weight, and I can make protective barriers but not for long. Oh, and and I can enhance my muscle power."

Tom involuntarily massaged his chest, forcefully reminded of his firsthand experience with this particular power.

"Remind me never to get into a fight with you."

Both of them laughed but Tom's laugh was replaced by a grunt of pain.

"Tom! You can't drive like this!"

"I have to, once we're in the city we can hide in public and go to a hospital. I'll live, and the more distance we get between them and us the better."

After driving for another ten minutes three black SUVs, which looked like reinforced Cadillac Escalades drove past them in the opposite direction, but when they passed them they made a U-turn and drove straight for Tom and Abby's car.

"Crap, we've got company."

[Black SUV]

"There they are! Don't let them get to the City!"

"Sir, their SUV is faster than ours but at the current speed we'll be able to gain on them."

"So be it; fire at their tires. Only the tires!"

One man with an M16 stood up through the open roof and aimed for the tires as the occupants of the two other SUVs did the same.

Tom saw the men, realized what they were aiming at and zigzagged along the three-lane road, making it hard for them to hit the tires.

"Pop those tires already you idiots!" yelled the squad leader at the men through the radio.

"Sir, we have a roadblock set up. ATM about five minutes."

"Good, make sure they don't leave the road!"

[White Audi SUV]

Abby watched in her rearview mirror as the SUVs pursuing them stopped firing and split up on each side of them, staying at a safe distance.

"Are they-"

Tom tried to switch lanes, but the SUV on his right sped up, preventing him from doing so.

"They don't want me to switch lanes-why?"

After about five minutes Tom still wasn't able to switch lanes. Not that he wanted to, but the fact they wanted him on that lane made him worried.

"Tom! Over there-"

Tom looked up ahead and saw something on the road-it was a roadblock!

Several black SUV's and water barrels were lined up along the road blocking the three-lane road entirely. Men in blue suit with handguns were standing behind the SUVs aiming at Tom and Abby.

"Crap! They didn't want me to switch lanes so I couldn't leave this road!"

"What do we do now?" Abby said in a panic.

"We can't stop, those guys would be on top of us in seconds."

"Wait... you don't mean-"

Abby's question was answered by Tom flooring his gas pedal, aiming for the two SUVs whose trunks were lined next to each other.

[Black SUV]

"Ha! We got them now! They have nowhere to run!"

"...Sir, they aren't slowing down."

"What?"

"In fact, they are gaining speed."

"They're nuts! Those SUV's can withstand a truck! How does he want to-"

The men behind the SUVs both realized at the same time, and jumped out of the way as Tom rammed the two SUVs at their lighter side. They swung away like a Wild West bar door. Pieces of metal flew through the air along with glass and a deafening bang was heard, but the Audi SUV made it through.

Suddenly the men in the SUVs realized that they were about to ram the roadblock as well.

"Aim for the hole they made!" screamed the squad leader.

Their SUV made it through with a few scratches but the two other SUVs hit each other, making them hit the other SUVs in the roadblock leaving none left for the chase.

"Fuck! I want more vehicles out here NOW! And let them send a pair of Rollers!"

"Rollers Sir? Isn't that a bit much for just one SUV?"

"DO IT!"

"...Yes Sir."

[White SUV]

Tom and Abby looked in disbelief at each other, then began to cheer like a soccer fan whose team had just won the UEFA league.

"I can't believe you did it!"

"Me neither, but we did it and we lost them all but one. And Glutter City is only a ten minute drive from now!"

"Yeah, hopefully we can... oh my god..."

Tom and Abby watched in disbelief as four more SUVs appear and began to chase them as well, quickly gaining on them.

"Abby, can you use your magic to stop them or something?"

"I could try to blow them up..."

"Guess we have no choice. I can open the roof, just yell if you need me to do something."

"Alright, keep your mind on the road and I'll take care of them."

Tom opened the roof and Abby climbed on the driver's seat and formed a purple orb in each hand. She proceeded to hurl them at the SUVs behind them. The first one hit the most right SUV making it explode into a big fireball while the other missed and hit the road creating a crater, which all the SUVs managed to dodge.

Abby hurled two more orbs to the middle SUV which moved to the left hitting the SUV next to it, making it swing out of control before it flipped over and slid across the road.

The three remaining SUVs drove on different lanes as not to get caught in each other's way, On each SUV one man stood in the open roof hands glowing blue as well.

As Abby hurled more orbs the men through the roof made a small barrier deflecting the orb off the road.

"Tom, they know how to negate my attacks!"

"Well, you'd better find a way to stop them, 'cause we have bigger problems than those SUVs!"

Abby looked to the left of the road and spots two black monster trucks riding on the access riding in front of the SUV‚s towards Tom and Abby.

"I got an idea! But you'll need to speed up Tom!

"Got it!"

Tom sped up as instructed finding it harder to maintain his driving with his injuries. Abby formed two more orbs, bigger than the previous ones and fired them, not at the monster trucks, but at the road. As the orbs hit the road they left two massive holes right in the path of the monster trucks. They both broke to avoid them but neither on time. They hit the holes and rolled over, out of the chase. The SUVs behind them kept driving, all but one.

The two SUVs who kept going were quickly taken out of action as the two monster trucks ground to a halt right in front of them. As they crashed, a powerful explosion shook the road.

[Black SUV]

"Goddamnit! Get around those wrecks and don't you dare lose them!"

"Yes Sir!"

They avoided the car wrecks and fires and chased Tom and Abby who got some distance as they exit the road towards Glutter City.

"Damn them! Faster you idiots!"

As the exited the road and head downtown they lost the Audi SUV much to the squad leader's distress. They drove around until suddenly the driver saw them exiting an underground parking lot.

"There! It's their SUV!"

"Excellent, follow them and we'll strike when they leave the city."

The black SUV followed the white Audi SUV towards the docks.

[Underground parking lot]

Tom carefully looked around the corner seeing the black SUV follow theirs. Relieved they took the bait; he turned towards Abby with a smile.

"They fell for it, they are following the guy we gave the keys to and they're going towards the docks."

"Good-but what now? We don't have transport, cash, a place to stay or anything."

"I got cash remember? The heritage will give us enough to find another place to stay so we can figure this out. For now let's go to a hospital first, the pain is killing me."

"Sure, lead the way." Abby said as she helped Tom by supporting him on her arm.

As they walked through the city towards the hospital a black van stopped next to them. As they looked towards the van several men in masks pushed them inside while holding a gun at them.

Before they knew what happened they were inside the moving van, and Abby received a needle in her shoulder, knocking her out instantly with a powerful sedative. Tom tried to fight back but there was little he could do as he too was given a shot of sedatives.

"Targets secured, fall back to safe house" was the last Tom heard before the darkness took him.

[Tom] Say Abby, if you can move stuff with your powers, why don't you ever grab me a beer?

[Abby] What? I'll give you some!!
