Chapter One

The base beat pounded through the space of the club, overlaid by the quick-paced techno beat of the song. Wispy smoke trails looped among the furs dancing to that heavy beat, their outfits showing faint stains of sweat under the flashes and rotating multicolored lights. Set into the wall and raised up further from the sunken space of the club dance floor was the DJ booth, walled up save for a small exit space out into the café portion of the club, the Blue Carpet. Seated at the DJ booth, a well-toned tiger leaned forwards, one paw held to one of his headphones, pressing it firmly to his ear, layering down the hat he wore backwards. A pair of tinted red glasses settle on his muzzle, partially obscuring the brown of his eyes. His other paw set on one of the records on a pair of turntables in front of him, setting down two furry fingers and shifting the record back and forth, sending a reverberating scratching noise over the techno beat of the club. A thick golden chain dangled around his neck over a white tank top, clinging to his toned chest thanks to the sweat drenching it. Baggy and dark, the tiger's camo pants, hidden by the DJ booth walls hang on his hips, giving view of the waistband of his dark blue briefs underneath. Resting back on his stool, the feline DJ gave another few spins on the record before cutting the song off. Plucking another record from the rack and exchanging them, he starts up the music, pressing his headphones back to one ear again.

"Hey Tweak!"

Lifting his head, the feline DJ glanced around before catching sight of the lion standing at the booth's doorway. His onyx mane slicked downwards, the head fur reached to just past his shoulders. A pair of rounded ears poked up from it, coated by a honey-brown fur. That same fur coats across the lion's face, save for the lighter tan fur along the sides and beneath his muzzle, and the darker honey-brown fur circling both of his emerald eyes. His black pad of a nose led down to a sly grin, showing off the faintest tips of fangs. The lion's frame was a bit larger than the tiger's, shoulders firm without being too broad. A tight black t-shirt, looking a size too small fitted tight on his form, with a mesh red baggy shirt pulled on over it. Baggy black cargo shorts keep up at the lion's waist with a belt, his tail; coated by that honey-brown fur, slide out from a hole in the back of the shorts, tipped off by a puff of onyx fur. Firm legs slipped out of those shorts, leading down to a pair of black and white sneakers on his hind paws.

"Yo Kovu, what's up?" The grin on the lion's face brought one to Tweak's own as the tiger scratched on the record, interrupting the beat a moment. "Who's the cutie over there with the husky?" The tiger's gaze followed the point of Kovu's arm over to a pair of lion and husky retreating from the dance floor to one of the café's tables.

Robert drew out a seat for Kaipo, pushing it in after the lion sat before taking a seat himself across the small rounded table. Both panted softly in the sweltering spring heat of the dance club, the atmosphere thick, heat intensified by all the bodies dancing so heavily. Both were moist, sweat showing through their shirts as they slumped in their seats "That was fun, now wasn't it?"

"Dunno," Tweak called over the music as his head bobbed to the beat "They've been here the last couple days though. Look like a pretty cute couple."

"Indeed..." Mumbling as he leaned back to the DJ booth's wall, Kovu took his muzzle in a paw, stroking the fur of his chin thoughtfully.

"Yeah, this was a great idea Robbie!" Taking the canine's paws in his own, Kaipo squeezed firmly. Both held their smiles, leaning forwards into a soft kiss "I know, you told me that yesterday. And the day before."

"Well I can't help it! 'Sides, we don't really have much else to do."

"Sorry, I didn't think my parents would have you sleep on the couch."

"It's not your fault. Sorry my mom almost walked in on us last night."

Robbie chuckled as he squeezed Kaipo's paws "Not your fault, Kai."

"I know, I know. I just kinda wanted to...well, you know..." Robert chuckled softly again, leaning in to kiss the lion as he squeezed his paws once more "It's not just you, Kai." Adding a wink, the sound of a bottle clinking off the table brought both gazes up to find a lion standing there, a bottle held in one paw "Well hello there you two. Haven't seen you around the club before."

"Oh, well," Robert recovered from the surprise of suddenly being spoken to first "We're not really from around here. We both live out in the suburbs."

"Oh really? Explains why I haven't seen you at school before then." Extending a paw, the second lion offered both a warm toothy grin "Name's Kovu Dustmoss."

Sharing a glance between each other, Kaipo accepted the paw first with a firm paw shake "I'm Kaipo, and this is Robert." The husky offered his own paw, though Kovu was reluctant to release Kaipo's right away, letting it slide from his grip before giving Robert's paw a shake "Pleased to meet you both. So you're not from the city, huh? What brings you guys out here then?"

"We're on our spring break this week." Kaipo spoke up as a smile came to his muzzle.

"So we thought we'd come out here to the city and take a look around." Robert continued for the lion, giving one of Kaipo's paws another squeeze "We found this place a couple nights ago. It was fun, so we've been coming back."

"Yeah, I try and get here when I've got a free night myself. Always a fun place to hang out. Good people, nice atmosphere..." Kovu took a deep breath before lifting his bottle and taking a sip "Good drinks too. You two want any?"

"No, that's okay, thanks." The headshake of the husky drew out Kovu's grin a little wider "Fair enough. Gotta drive home and all that, I understand."

"Oh, well, not really..." Shaking his head as he spoke, Kaipo glanced to Robbie "We're actually busing it back to the suburbs after this."

"A bus?" Kovu looked taken aback, shaking his head quickly as he slammed the bottle against the table "I won't hear of it! I can drive you guys back home!"

The pair of feline and canine glanced slowly to each other, then back to Kovu "We don't wanna be any trouble..."

"No trouble at all, honestly!"

"Well, if you've been drinking..."

"This?" Kovu twisted the bottle around, tapping a claw tip over the words 'non-alcoholic' on the bottle "I'm fine. Honestly, I wouldn't hear of letting you two have to take a bus back home."

"Well, if it's not a problem..."

"Not a problem at all!" Kovu motioned with his free paw "If you're ready, I can take you both home now!"

"Works for me. You ready too Kai?"

"Sure Robbie."

"Alright then, follow along boys."

The drive was quiet along the suburb roads, Kovu humming softly to the radio as Kaipo sat in the front passenger's seat. They had dropped Robbie off a half hour before, and the drive since then had been silent "Turn left up here." Beyond Kaipo's instructions to Kovu.

"Up here, the third on the left." Kaipo pointed out his house as Kovu gave a nod, pulling his car over to the curb.

"So, you two planning on coming back to the club tomorrow?" Kovu turned a warm smile to meet Kaipo's gaze as he nodded "Well, for a little while anyways. We were also gonna go to a movie."

"Really?" Kovu quirked a brow "Whatcha gonna see?"

"Oh, that new action flick. The one about the commando."

"Ah yeah, I've heard good things about that. You guys wouldn't mind if I say, tagged along with you to see it? I could drive you both there and back home again." The offer brought out Kaipo's smile "Really? You'd do that?"

"Sure!" Kovu's paw landed on Kaipo's knee, patting a few times "I'd love to!"

"Okay, we can meet you at the club at eight tomorrow. That work?"

"Sure thing. See ya tomorrow then." Offering a wink to Kaipo as he pushed open the door, Kovu lifted his paw in a wave that Kaipo returned still with his smile. The lion watched as Kaipo stepped up the path to his house, a faint flash of his pink tongue running along his lips as he glanced a moment at Kaipo's backside "Sure thing..." He mumbled as he shifted his car into drive and started forwards.
