Chapter 1: Going Away

(September, 7th, 2019 A.D.- Thursday 10:00am)

Upon a small field a family of foxes stood, mother and child looking up to the setting sun, father; his robes soiled and covered in sweat; with his arm over his brow admiring the feat of nature. The fields around them stretched far into the horizon dwarfed by a set of snowy topped mountains. The fiery red sun shining down, as if a god smiling on the small family. From afar a young red fox looked upon the scene admiring it. His paws outstretched and the scene was plucked from the wall, the portrait dusty around the frame.

The fox was about average size, his hair lengthy and brown, the ends meeting at the middle of his back. Around his neck a thick leather collar nearly choked upon him, and his lips full and black, shining blue eyes scanning about his now mostly empty room intently. He wiggled his round rump happily, excited by the prospect of his new home, and his heart fluttering about with fervor and excitement.

He was ready to be cast into the future with no fear of the coming challenges that may come to be. There were many things to look forward to, and more than that, many fine young creatures as well. He ran his black paws through his long hair, and then stepped into his bathroom, taking from the medicine cabinet a toothbrush and a large fine brush he typically used for his tail. Shutting the cabinet he looked upon his reflection, blue pools staring over the orangish-red fur that adorn his body. A stripe of white going from his muzzle down his body and disappearing into his waist band. His long bushy tail frittered about for a moment and he forced a smile.

He shook his head and went back to his room, sheet robbed bed sitting in the middle, like a blank canvas awaiting its paint. The fox smiled and closed up the last of his card board boxes, sliding each of its leaflets into one another to lock the box closed. He let out a long sigh, before taking a deep breath in, his sable paws shifted at the somewhat tight button up shirt clinging to his form. He was in descent shape and the fox could smile that at the end of High school, he didn't end up losing his figure. His long ears twitched before he finally drew out his paw to shift the door handle of his bedroom, the door opened to the hall way of his current living quarters. At the end of that hall was his mother she stood about three inches shorter than him with great big protruding ears and light yellowish-orange fur. Her sundress' rim was stained with precipitation of some sort. Tears, was the fox's guess as he stared across to his mother, suit case in paw.

She quickly began to make her way towards him and the fox let out a sigh placing down the suitcase.

"Adrian..." she sniffled outstretching her arms, to quickly wrap around her sons lithe neck and draw the thin form close.

"Mom..." Adrian muttered as he closed his big round eyes, his arms moving down to hug at the low of her back "I'm not going away forever"

"It feels like it" The momma fox uttered still sniffling and letting out separated breathes "C-can't you just stay here?"

"Mom...I really would like to...just have some time away; besides, Phillip gets free room and board...So-" Adrian attempted to make the idea logical to his mother but to no avail, each word he spoke only seemed to summon deeper sobs and a longer clutch from his mother, at the other side of the room he saw his step father, a wraithy coyote with mustered fur, and squinted eyes stared at him with disgust. Adrian only looked at the image of hate for a moment before he pulled away from his mom and rubbed her shoulders "Goodbye mom...Phil will be here any minute, and I better not-"

"...just go" she sniffled reluctantly backing up from the hall to grab for a small handkercheif stashed into a pocket on her dress. Adrian didn't stay to watch the depressing scene, as he slowly carried one box, after the other out of his home and set it at the curb. Outside, his tiny suburban brick house sat in a culdasac Many kids frantically playing games as they passed balls back and forth; back and forth; side to side. As the last of his possessions sat outside Adrian settled his rump on the sidewalk and huddled his knees close. His heart began to pound and his eyes started to water a bit. He began to sniffle burying his nose between his legs, his tears streaking down the sides of his face, over his cheeks and plopping onto the sidewalk. Adrian's form trembled as he felt his mothers sadness creeping over him.

He felt selfish for leaving his mother and unborn brother alone with that rotten step-father of his. The fox couldn't handle the man who tried to own his mother; and he couldn't stand to see him hovering over everything with such childish desire. Adrian's brain pounded into his skull as he began to sob greatly, his claws digging into his elbows as he held his legs close to his form. Suddenly he felt his toes struck through his shoes, his ears giving a twitch as he lifted his head to see a little puppy looking innocently at him and reaching for his ball. Adrian forced a smile and pushed his paw to the puppy, rolling the basket ball along the road. The puppy seemed confused at the fox's predicament.

"What's a matter?" He asked, his high pitched voice squeaking.

"I'm leaving my Momma" Adrian said softly, blinking back tears.

"So?" the puppy seemed a little confused by the reply "Aren't you happy!?"

"I thought I would be" Adrian said very quietly "...I'm scared".

"Pft! Your a grown up! Grown ups aren't supposed to be scared!" The puppy said before gripping his basketball tight and puffing out his chest "I ain't scared a' nuthin!"

Adrian snickered lightly at the remark and smiled as the puppy ran off, his little brown ears flopping in the wind. His eyes still watered as he thought of his mother's tears. The fox was still very young and he knew all too well that he didn't have to leave, the campus was close enough that he wouldn't be required to move. He simply wanted to have a renewed life without all of the strings attached to his family and past.

He wiggled a bit on the sidewalk and leaned back into his paws. He sat like that comfortably for half an hour before he felt the ground tremble and his eyes creaked open, with his head leaning back as it was he saw the sideways image of his friend's grey van, it was old and it made odd sounds for any vehicle as it rolled up to him. It came to a quick stop just as it passed him by a hair. Adrian's head darted up as his back went erect and he wiggled in place on the sidewalk. The driver's side door opened up and the seven foot sloth strolled around the side of the van peaking his almond shaped green eyes around the hood of the vehicle to smile at the fox.

Philip was a little portly but it looked good on him due to his height and body structure. He was wearing a white t-shirt and baggy brown cargo shorts, he seemed energetic and his eyes darted from the limited boxes on Adrian's sidewalk.

"Th...this is it?" He asked, a little stunned, and looking at Adrian still smiling.

"You're awfully chipper" Adrian's black lips formed a grin "Happy to have lil' ol' me sleeping with you?"

"Okay let's not say stuff like that!" Phillip's maw went agape, never stunned by his promiscuous vulpine friend but always at a loss "I'm trying to find the future Ms. Jarouss".

"I know, I know silly" Adrian said his soft voice lowering in volume as he brushed one of this fairy like paws over the Sloth's chest. His brown hair atop his head very pert and well adjusted even in the heat of summer.

"So this...THIS, is all Mister Dhalia, Fashionista and Drama Queen, has to bring?" Phillips head tilted with inquisition "I mean, don't you need a wardrobe, and like...five hundred mirrors".

"None of those things are mine, they're on loan from the Fashion show. They'll be wanting them back" Adrian giggled lightly and began to lift one of his suitcases and then the other "Will you open the back doors for me please?"

Phillip pattered around the sidewalk and opened the back doors of his van, as he did the fox followed behind and the two began to fill the rear with Adrian's belongings. Once they were loaded up, the two hopped into the front of the van and leaned back in the chairs both giving slightly nervous sighs.

"College" Adrian said distantly.

"Furries University, THE university for the liberal arts and social Science!" Phillip said gasping at the idea "I just can't believe it".

"It'll be different." Adrian said as he looked out the window as Phil began to drive away from his home.

"College Girls" The brown haired sloth says leaning close to adrian, smirking "Come on, it'll be great, we'll meet new people, Learn, have fun. College is perfect".

"I dunno, but I do think I'll be able to get a fresh start" Adrian says biting at his lower lip "I think I can get away from everything".

"Well...if there was a place to reinvent yourself...it's college"

"Yeah..."

"Sad about your mom?"

"Yeah, she was in tears" Adrian muttered leaning lower on the window watching as they slowly left the suburban neighborhood he knew so well "I hope I'm doing the right thing".

"Seeking higher education? Wanting to be a writer?" Phillip asked slightly sarcastically.

"Leaving her alone with my step-dad, he's just simply horrible" Adrian snarled a bit.

"Nah', it's okay to want to get away from that" Phillip laughed it off "Your Ma' would leave him if he got out of paw, I know Miss Lisa well enough for that".

"Yeah..."

"Is there something else?" Phillip asked leaning back as they came to a stop light.

"I'm scared"

"Me too" Phillip admitted patted his paws on the steering wheel as he gazed at the big red round light staring back at him "But, it's worth it".

"I'm glad you're so self confident"

The two pulled off from the red light and began to enter into the urban area of the city, towering buildings made of glass and steel, traffic whirling about the whole of downtown. The Van made its way off to the side, into an expanse of trees and a long road leading up a slight incline wrapping around a grassy hill. As Adrian viewed from his window he saw the Large Campus that was F.U. Hundreds of Cars taking the same road they were. Souls on their way to be melded, Crafted into respectable minds. A darkness, however, clutched at Adrian's heart as he saw the buildings in the distant that would be become his new home.

He felt unsafe, as if he were entering into Dangerous lands. He could not explain his apprehension at the idea of living on his own but something deep within him was cold and he could feel it rising within. Would he find happiness at this place? Love? Satisfaction? Or would this be the bane of his existence; a pure self-inflicted hell. The sloth beside him was singing a happy tune as he could see the campus as well, Adrian tried to let the positivity lift him as he decided to focus on his hair, running his paws through his brown locks as he looked away.

His mind then went to a warmer placed as he smirked a bit devilishly, wondering if he could find someone who was Alone, naive, well built, and hopefully had at least ten inches. The thought seemed to keep his mind away from his anxious heart as he began to plot a way to find company when the night drew upon him.
