RJ's Adventure

Chapter 6: The First Badge

Back in Luka Town Jail:

A week had passed since Hail had been captured and thrown in jail. During this time she had done nothing but grieved over her loss and capture. Thinking to herself about how she could redeem herself, she kept wondering how long it would take for Blaze and the other higher-ups to learn of her arrest. As she sat there trying to think of her escape, the one thing the police did not find on her made its presence known as her communicator began to beep in her pocket. As she answers, she is once again greeted by the face of Blaze.

"Hail it has been almost a week since you made your last report, have you made any progress in capturing the Zoroark?"

Hail lets out a sigh. "Unfortunately, no. There has been a snag in my plans."

"What exactly do you mean a snag? Where are you anyway?"

"I'm in the Luka Town jail."

"YOU GOT ARRESTED!? I thought we could trust you with such an easy assignment and now you risk blowing our cover."

"I had found the Zoroark, but she has started to travel with a new trainer. Somehow he was able to bring out her fighting potential and they managed to beat us."

"A new trainer was able to beat you with that cowardly creature? This is really going to damage your reputation with the others."

"It wasn't just the two, the boy also had a Riolu that was holding its own without any commands from him. Last I heard they were talking about heading for Winton City."

"I see. Well, we will come and bust you out, but your assignment of trying to capture Zoroark is over. I am putting Quake in charge of that for now."

"Quake? You can't be serious. That lazy ass hardly takes his job seriously and is always goofing off, plus he is the least experienced out of the six of us."

"But he gets shit done. You will receive new orders after we get you back to headquarters. Blaze out."

The screen on the device goes black and Hail returns it to her pocket.

Great now I'm going to be reduced to doing dirty work. At least he never said anything about me losing my position. Well since they are coming to bust me out I might as well get some sleep.

And with that final thought, she lies down on the small bed provided in her cell and falls asleep.

After being on the road for three days the group finally reaches Winton City. RJ and Rachael are the two currently walking along, as Nina and Zeta did not feel like waking up that morning. As RJ and Rachael stand outside of the gate to the city, Rachael can't help but admire the size of the city.

"This place is huge RJ, are you even going to be able to find the gym?" Rachael says still eyeing the city.

"Well it is the largest city in the Baina region. But there is no need to worry. I do have a map built into my Xtransceiver so we can't get helplessly lost. Anyway, first things first, we should go and get you all checked out at the center and get a room for the night."

"Yea I guess so."

Rachael then hops back up onto RJ's shoulder to avoid the trouble of walking through the busy city crowd. After about an hour and a half of walking RJ finally finds the Winton City Pokemon Center and RJ get s a room for the night. He also hands over his Pokéballs containing Nina and Zeta for nurse joy to examine, Rachael went to get checked out as well, but she still refused to go inside of her ball.

Nurse Joy handed RJ his room key and he heads up to get settled in. After he gets all set up for their stay, RJ takes a quick shower, changes his clothes and heads back down to the lobby to get something to eat. While sitting at his booth enjoying his lunch, his eyes are suddenly covered from behind.

"C'mon Rachael knock it off." He says grabbing her off his shoulders and sits her down next to him, but then another Riolu walks around the corner and starts staring at RJ with a sad expression on her face.

"Am I really that easy to replace RJ?"

"Wait, Rachael? Then who.........I get it now, Zeta I know it's you."

(Well you caught on faster than I thought you would.) After that statement she hops off the booth and takes up her Mightyena disguise. Rachael couldn't help but laugh at the trick they had played on RJ. (And I was wondering how long I would be able to keep up the charade.)

"Well enough of that for now and where are your balls anyway?"

"I have them right here." Rachael says while holding out all three of RJ's Pokéballs. He takes them from her and clips them to his belt. After the three sit around and enjoy their lunch, Zeta decides to rest up some more in her ball and RJ returns her into it. After RJ and Rachael clean up their lunch, the two figure they should head back to their room and make their appointment to challenge the Gym Leader and to plan their strategy, but on their way to the stairs they bump into a fellow trainer.

RJ staggers back slightly from walking into him while the other trainer falls to the floor.

"Hey watch where you're walking." The man on the floor says while standing up.

"Sorry about that, are you alright?"

"Yea I guess so." He says while finally looking up at RJ. Upon seeing the man's face he recognizes him as Chuck. "Well, look who I run into, haven't seen you since Route 74."

"Yea it's nice to see you to Chuck." RJ replies in a sarcastic tone. Rachael starts growling at Chuck.

"I can see you are taking good care of little Riolu there. Also, my offer is still on the table, except that Shinx I offered is now a Luxio."

"If you remember, her name is Rachael, and the answer is always going to be no." RJ replies, his voice slowly becoming angry.

"Well how about another battle, I am stronger then before and I think I can kick your ass now."

"Listen here Chuck, I hardly want to fight you, and not of cowardice, but I just can't respect you as a trainer. So all I can say you can take your trainer's license and shove it!"

"Ok RJ, now you're starting to piss me off and I swear someday I will get that Riolu, and until I do..." Chuck tries to finish his sentence but is cut off by an older man breaking up their fight.

"What seems to be the problem here you two?" The unknown man asks.

Chuck looks at the man. "Nothing important."

"Well then, since this seems to be taken care of, I better head back to the gym."

That statement really gets RJ's attention. "Wait, you work at the gym?"

"Indeed I do. The name is Louie, and I'm the gym leader." Louie replies.

"Well then that makes today a lot easier, I was actually about to call your gym and make an appointment." RJ says. Rachael lets out a bark of agreement from his shoulder.

"Well you are in luck, you're the only one to actually ask for a battle today. What's your name?"

"The name is RJ, and my friend here on my shoulder is Rachael." He says while pointing to her and extending his hand.

Louie shakes his hand politely and scratched one of Rachael's ears. "Well I don't take many challenges in one day, but since you were the first to ask, I'll be waiting, the gym is open until six, stop on by whenever you are ready."

"Well then I'll be there in an hour or two."

"Excellent, I'll be expecting you." Louie gives off a friendly wave and heads out of the center.

As RJ and Rachael head towards their room to prepare, Chuck lets out a final statement. "I really don't care if you mind or not, but I want to see how strong you have gotten, so I am going to watch your gym battle."

"I really don't care." That was the last statement RJ said before heading upstairs.

After RJ and Rachael arrive back in their room, RJ sits down on the couch and lets Nina and Zeta out of their balls, Zeta still has her Mightyena illusion up out of instinct.

"Well girls, it's time we think of a strategy for our gym battle, because I match is in about an hour."

(So soon? I thought you said we had to make an appointment.) Zeta says with a confused expression.

"Believe it or not, we ran into the gym leader in the lobby. He managed to break up an argument me and Chuck started having before it turned into a fight."

(Who is this Chuck person? Sounds like you two don't like each other much.) Nina said while stretching on the floor.

Rachael was the one to answer. "He is kind of a rival for RJ in a sense. He is determined to have me join his group, but it's never going to happen."

(Well, I am not going to let anyone take me new friends away. I might be the newest member here, but I promise he won't take Rachael away.) Nina replies.

RJ pats Nina on her head. "I wouldn't worry too much Nina. He is trying to bribe me for Rachael, with money and other Pokémon, but I made a promise to Rachael to help find her mother and until I do that, she is isn't going anywhere she doesn't want to."

Upon hearing this, while she has heard him say that before, Rachael stands up and gives RJ a hug. "I know I've said this before, but thank you."

"Not a problem Rachael. But now I think we should plan out how we are going to take on Louie." RJ says while all three girls nod in agreement.

The four discuss several different options on how to approach the upcoming battle. After about thirty minutes of constant bickering and planning, the group seems to get a plan together. Soon after, RJ returns Zeta and Nina to their balls, and with Rachael once again riding on her shoulder, he heads down to the lobby and out the door to challenge Louie for his first badge.

After getting directions from his Xtransceiver, RJ learns that the gym is located on the West edge of town right where the nearby forest begins. Even with the large crowd of the city, they managed to reach the gym much faster than he had expected. As he got to edge of town where the forest began, he was easily able to locate the gym. As RJ and Rachael walk in the front door, he is greeted in the Gym lobby by both Louie and Chuck.

"Well, I see that you made it. Are you ready to battle?" Louie asked.

"Yes we are, but I have a feeling that I just walk and we get started." RJ replied.

Louie lets out a laugh. "I see you think things through fairly well. And that is correct. Through this door is where your challenge begins. In this large room is a hedge maze that you must walk through. Hidden in this maze are several gym trainers that you may have to fight as well as some of my other bug Pokémon, but they are just enjoying themselves, they will not attack you. Do not worry, the trainers will not come looking for you. Simply make your way through to the door on the other side, and then you can face me."

"So if possible I don't have to face any of the gym trainers?"

"Correct. Now if you excuse me, I need to head to the arena and await your arrival. Your friend here will have to wait in the stands to watch. Good luck." And with that Louie and Chuck both head through a door on the side to head to the back.

RJ approaches the door he had been instructed to go through with Rachael still n his shoulder, he takes a deep breath and enters the room. Upon entering, he is amazed at how the gym has been designed. There are trees all along the walls and coming up from the center of the maze. Rachael is amazed as well and decides to take look at the area with her aura sight.

"This is amazing RJ, all the hedges and trees are real, and yet we are indoors." She said while still taking all the sights of the gym.

"Well Rachael, do you want to try to find those trainers first, or do you want to go straight through to the other side?" RJ asks as he started into the maze.

Just as he asks that question, a Dustox flies passed Rachael head an into a nearby tree, she lets out a short scream of fright and nearly falls off of RJ's shoulder. "Let's go straight through, the less time I spend around these bugs the better."

"Alright then, then let's start searching this maze for the exit, just keep an eye out for any trainers around corners with your aura sight." RJ says as Rachael nods in agreement.

As RJ and Rachael make their way through the maze, they are trying to get through as fast as they can, but RJ seems to keep getting lost. Luckily with Rachael's help he is able to avoid the three trainers stationed in the maze. Soon he come to an exit of the maze and is ready to get his battle underway, until Rachael speaks up.

"RJ, I think we are back where we started."

RJ looks through the window of the door and can see the lobby of the gym. "Damn, you're right, well back in we go."

Rachael gives RJ a light smack on the back of his head "Dummy."

Finally after being in the maze for another half an hour, RJ and Rachael finally are able to find the exit, and the door that leads to where Louie is waiting. As he enters the arena, he can see how much simpler is has been designed compared to the previous room. The arena itself was just a basic field of grass. No trees were in the arena at all and one set of stands had been built on one side for spectators. He soon hears a shout from the stands from Chuck.

"About time you got here. I've been waiting for almost an hour."

"No one said you had to stay and wait." RJ replies with a hint of annoyance in his voice. But before their argument can heat up anymore Louie interrupts.

"Let's not fight here you two. Anyway, RJ is you prepared to battle?"

"You know it."

The referee standing on the side lines raises his voice explaining the rules. "The stakes of this match is a Web Badge. This is a three on three battle, no time limit, and only the challenger may make substitutions, let the battle begin!"

Louie throws out his first ball and as it pops open a Skorupi emerges and take up a battle stance. RJ looks up at Rachael who simply nods and makes her way out onto the field. "RJ, you may have to honor of having the first move!"

"Fine by me. Rachael start off with a Screech!" Rachael covers her ears and lets out a deafening screech making everybody in the room flinch in pain, including the Skorupi. "Now use bullet punch!" Rachael's fists glow a faint silver color and she rushes in and lands several punches on the Skorupi, pushing it back several feet.

"Not bad, Skorupi use Pin Missile." The Skorupi tail glows and sends out seemingly hundreds of spikes towards Rachael, who dodges most of them, but a few manage to score a couple of hits. They don't seem to have caused much damage, as Rachael is still standing without a problem.

"Rachael now use Quick Attack!" Rachael rushes in close.

"Stop it with your Scary Face attack!" Skorupi stands on it tail to make itself look bigger and just as Rachael is close, rushes down and puts on an intimidating face that stops Rachael in her tracks with a slight yelp. "Now that's close, use Sludge Bomb." The Skorupi opens it mouth wide launching several balls of sludge, all manage to hit Rachael, coating much of her fur in the sticky sludge. One of them happened to hit her square in the face, forcing her to keep her eyes closed as she reels back in pain.

RJ, I can't see!

"Use your aura sight, you can see just fine!" See starts using her aura sight and can see the Skorupi charging in close once again. "Rachael, use Confusion!"

Without even opening her eyes, Rachael holds her paw in the air and soon the Skorupi is surrounded in the familiar blue glow. She then lifts the Skorupi and tosses it clear across the ring and it skids along the grass until it comes in contact with the wall of the arena.

"Skorupi cannot battle, Riolu wins the first round."

"Rachael do you want to keep going?"

I'm fine RJ, I can see just fine with my aura sight now. Still that bug got me covered in sludge.

"Now's not the time to worry about that."

"Not too bad for the first round, but now it's time to meet your next opponent." Louie throws his second Pokéball into the air and a Venonat emerges from the light. "Now Venonat, start things off with Stun Spore."

The Venonat starts the shake as a golden-brown dust begins to fly off its fur and into Rachael's direction. "Rachael you need to get out of the way!" Rachael soon starts running away from the direction of the dust to one side, but she fails to notice the Venonat running over to meet her.

"Venonat, use Psybeam!" The Venonat's eyes glow red and soon a large beam of Purple-pinkish energy shoots forth and hits Rachael in the stomach. After trying to fight it, she is soon overpowered and is pushes back and soon falls to ground unconscious.

"Riolu cannot battle, Venonat wins." The referee says while RJ rushes over to Rachael.

"Rachael are you ok?" RJ says picking her up as she starts to stir.

I'll be fine, just make sure you beat him. She managed to say with a smirk on her face.

"We will, now I know you hate your ball, but I am going to return you so you can rest easier."

I understand, just don't leave me in there too long.

"I won't." He then pulls out Rachael's ball and recalls her. "Well, time for my second Pokémon."

RJ throws another of his Pokéballs in the air and as it pops open a Heracross appears and takes up a stance.

"A Heracross? Quite an unusual choice, but I am not one to judge, lets continue this match."

"Heracross, use Fury swipes." The Heracross swoops in quickly and unleashes a fury of slashes on the Venonat until letting out one final blow which causes the Venonat to lose its footing, but soon gets back up. Just as the Heracross charges in again, Louie calls out to the Venonat. "Quick use Confusion to stop it!"

The Heracross is surrounded by a blue glow, but it doesn't even slow it down. "Hit it with a scratch!" The Heracross swipes one claw down and sends the Venonat back several feet. "Now finish it with Shadow Ball!" Heracross opens its mouth as a familiar ball of black energy forms and is launched at the Venonat. It is a direct hit causing an explosion and as the smoke clears the Venonat is unconscious on the ground.

"Venonat cannot battle Heracross wins."

As Louie returns the Venonat to its ball, he looks over at RJ. "That is not a Heracross isn't it?"

RJ starts lets out a small laugh. "I guess there is no fooling a gym leader for long. Alright Zeta, I guess we don't have to hide your form any longer." The Heracross soon begins to change and within seconds, Zeta is standing in its place.

(I was wondering how long I would have been able to keep that up.) She says while waiting for Louie's final choice.

"Well it's time you meet my final choice." Louie throws out his final ball and what emerges gives both RJ and Zeta a small surprise. From out of the ball appears an Ariados, however instead of the usual orange color it is a dark purple. "Let's start things off quickly Ariados, use Spider Web!"

While Zeta is prepared for the attack, she is surprised to see the web shoot straight into the air, and a large spider web now hangs from the ceiling about ten feet off the ground. RJ and Zeta both look back to where the Ariados had been standing, but it has disappeared. "Zeta on the web!"

Just as she looks up, Ariados is quickly moving above her. "Use String Shot!" The sticky web shoots from the mouth of the Ariados and quickly coats Zeta with completely. "Now use X-scissor!" The Ariados flow legs begin to glow and it quickly drops down and scores a direct hit on Zeta. She lets out a scream on pain and falls to the floor. While still conscious, she cannot move her arms or legs due to the web. As she tries to stand up Ariados charges in to prepare for another attack RJ calls out.

"I think this round is over."

(What do you mean? I can still fight if I can get this web off!) Zeta yells out of frustration.

"I know Zeta, but after that hit you took, I don't think you will be able to, so I don't want to risk further injury." He then walks out and manages to pick up Zeta and place her next to his trainer's box. "Don't worry Zeta, you did great."

(I feel like I have failed you.) She says while looking down, still sitting down coated in the web.

"You can't win them all, but we will try harder next time. Just take it easy, we still have Nina."

Louie then speaks up. "You certainly care much about your Pokémon. You have definitely earned my respect." He then motions to the referee who throws RJ a bottle. "This will disintegrate the web binding your Zoroark." He then proceeds to spray the liquid onto Zeta's arm until her paw is free, he then hands her the bottle and she continues to rid herself of the sticky web.

"Well Nina, it's up to you." He throws his final ball into the air and the little Vulpix appears and is ready for battle.

"Ariados use Pin Missile!" The Ariados launches a barrage of spikes at the small Vulpix who doesn't move an inch.

"Counter it with Ember!" Nina proceeds to launch a barrage of small fireballs which cancel on the Pin Missile attack in a small explosion. "Now use Flame Burst!" Nina forms a ball of fire in front of her mouth a launches it towards the Ariados but it goes wide and Ariados didn't have to dodge.

"Looks like your Vulpix needs to work on that move's accuracy."

"Who said she was aiming for Ariados." Louie then looks up and sees the web has caught fire and is quickly spreading. It soon reaches Ariados it is falls towards the ground with nothing left to keep it up in the air. "Now use you Quick Attack!" She then quickly moves in and scores a direct hit. "Now another Flame Burst!" This time Nina's attack is dead on its target. When the smoke clears, Ariados is left on the ground in heap and unconscious.

"Ariados cannot battle, Vulpix wins and victory goes to the challenger."

Nina runs over the RJ who proceeds to crouch down pet her head as Louie walks over. "That was a wonderful battle. You fought clean and now for your reward." He pulls out a small piece of metal that look like a small spider web. "This is the Web Badge. Wear it with pride."

"I plan to Louie." The two shake hands and then RJ, with Nina at his side, walk towards the exit and back to the Pokémon center. "You know Nina, I'm surprised how strong you are."

(Don't tell me that you actually doubted me. Anyway, where's Rachael, isn't she your usual walking buddy?)

"She got knocked out and covered in sludge, so she's in her ball for now. That reminds me, we better get her treated quickly, the longer she is in her ball, the more we are going to have to listen to her complain about it."

(Agreed.) And with that, RJ and Nina start running towards the Pokémon center among the much less crowded streets of Winton City.

A few hours go by at the center, soon Rachael and Zeta are back to full health and the group proceeded to have a big dinner in celebration. While sitting around the restaurant of the Pokémon center, the girls all enjoy their specialty dishes, and RJ even treats himself to couple beers while enjoying the night.

"RJ what is that stuff you're drinking?" Rachael asks out of curiosity.

"Well Rachael, it's called beer, and it's something I like to drink every once and a while when I feel like I deserve a little treat. Still, tonight isn't about me, it's about you three. You all did a great job and we only have seven badges left until we reach the league."

"Can I try some?" Rachael asks reaching for the glass.

"Sorry Rachael but you can't." He says while picking up his glass.

"But why not?"

"A couple of reasons. One, most likely, you would not like the taste. Second, this is a drink for adults only because of the alcohol. And third, alcohol affects Pokémon much faster than humans. Too much and you would be acting completely goofy and might end up hurting yourself."

"I see, well I don't that to happen."

"None of us do, but again, all three enjoy yourselves tonight, you earned it."

(I'm glad you think I did a good job RJ, but I still feel like I should have been able to do better.) Zeta said while looking down again and playing slightly with her food.

"Again Zeta, you did what you could, that's all I ever ask for. Let's just go ahead and enjoy the night." The girls all nod in agreement and finish off their dinners. After RJ pays he grabs one more beer for the room later and the group head back upstairs for some relaxation time.

Back up in the room, RJ turns the TV on to check the weather and news while the girls make small talk. After learning what he was waiting to hear, he flips on the Gym Battle Network for the girls as he heads to the bathroom for a shower. After closing the door to the bathroom, he Xtransceiver rings before he can even turn the shower on. He looks at screen and he sees it is a call from home, he answers to see his mother's face.

"Congratulations on your victory RJ. You and your Pokémon seem to work well together."

"Thanks mom. I told you I would make you proud. Which reminds me, what did dad think of my battle?"

"Believe it or not, he was really getting into it. He even started routing for you. After I pointed that out to him, he tried to hide it, but I think he knows when he is caught."

"Alright mom, well tell dad I said hi, and I would love to talk more, but you caught me just as I was getting in the shower."

"Ok RJ, remember we are rooting for you. Love you, Bye." Then the screen goes blank and RJ proceeds to take his shower, but soon decides on a bath instead to relax for a little bit.

Back out in the room, Nina has already fallen asleep on the couch as the other two watch a gym battle staring Fantina of the Hearthome City Gym in the Sinnoh region.

"I'm glad we won't have to face a ghost type gym any time soon." Rachael says while watching the battle.

(Don't be too sure Rachael. I have heard one of the gyms in this region is a ghost type gym.)

"Well I guess we will cross that bridge when we come to it."

As the girls continue to watch the TV, Rachael soon starts to let her mind wander, and out of curiosity, she gets out RJ's Pokédex and starts trying to figure out some things. While she is focused on that, Zeta notices RJ had left his beer out on the table. Her curiosity starts to get the better of her as well, and walks over to the bottle. Seeing it is already open, she sniffs the open end and gets a good whiff of it.

He won't mind if I take a small sip.

Zeta then puts the bottle to her mouth and takes a sip of the alcoholic beverage. Her taste buds go wild with the strange flavor and texture of the liquid. While she is not too fond of the taste, she decides to have another sip, this one larger than the large. She starts to have a strange feeling in her head that is making her feel funny.

I don't know what is causing this, but I am starting to like this feeling.

With that she goes ahead and gulps down the entire bottle and places it back on the table. Zeta then walks over back to the bed and continues watching the gym battle on TV. About ten minutes go by and the alcohol really starts to set in. Soon she is lying on her back on the back and the room is spinning. She begins to laugh at sight.

"Zeta what are you laughing at? Rachael asks after hearing the laughter.

(The whole room Rachael. It's spinning and I feel lighter than air.)

"What do you mean? Are you feeling ok?"

(I feel great, this feeling is amazing.)

RJ then comes out of the shower in the lounge pants he wears at night and a white sleeveless shirt.

"RJ, Zeta is acting weird."

"What do you mean weird?" He asks with a look of concern on his face. Just as he says that, Zeta sits up and is slightly swaying where she sits.

(Hey RJ, how long have there been three of you?) She asks with a hint of laughter at the end of her question.

RJ turns around and notices the beer he had left open and nearly full is now empty on the table.

"Zeta you drank my beer didn't you?"

(I might have had a sip.)

"Well I know alcohol works faster on Pokémon then humans but this fast?" he lets out a sigh.

"Zeta you're drunk, let's get you to the couch so you can get some sleep."

(But I'm not tired, I wanna watch the room spin some more.) She starts to stand up and wobble in place. (I am not going to sleep yet I am going to......) Her sentence is cut off as she passes out and falls to the floor, luckily RJ catches her before she hits the ground. He then pulls her over the couch where she is already fast asleep and snoring.

"Does that happen to everyone who drinks that stuff?" Rachael asks.

"Pretty much. But it is different for everybody, some people can drink more than others, and as you can see with Pokémon, it doesn't take much at all. Or maybe she's a lightweight, I don't know." RJ and Rachael sit on the bed and continue to watch TV until around 11pm. Rachael had already fallen asleep at the edge of the bed, and RJ decides to turn in for the night as well.

I cannot believe it took me so long to find time to plan this chapter out. But I am already working on chapter seven. I already have Chapter three of my other story planned out, as well as the opening for my new fallout story. We'll see how long it takes to get those up. But since it might be about a week for anything new, Happy Halloween everyone, may your night be filled with frights, scares, and candy.

Also, I am thinking of making a new character soon, not team memeber, but i new character, how long he/she/it will be around, I don't know. But, off an idea of a friend of mine, I am having a little contest, should anyone want to try.

The next commenter who can guess the next pokemon RJ will have join his party will get to design the character. If no one can guess it, I will just take the number of the pokemon and whoever is closet number wise will get it. Good Luck.
